Charging and energy fluctuations of a driven quantum battery

We consider a quantum battery modeled as a set of N independent two-level quantum systems driven by a time dependent classical source. Different figures of merit, such as stored energy, time of charging and energy quantum fluctuations during the charging process, are characterized in a wide range of parameters, by means of numerical approach and suitable analytical approximation scheme. Particular emphasis is put on the role of different initial conditions, describing the preparation state of the quantum battery, as well as on the sensitivity to the functional form of the external time-dependent drive. It is shown that an optimal charging protocol, characterized by fast charging time and the absence of charging fluctuations, can be achieved starting from the ground state of each two-level system, while other pure preparation states are less efficient. Moreover, we argue that a periodic train of peaked rectangular pulses can lead to fast charging. This study aims at providing a useful theoretical background in view of future experimental solid-state implementations.

From fractional solitons to Majorana fermions in a paradigmatic model of topological superconductivity

Majorana bound states are interesting candidates for applications in topological quantum computation. Low energy models allowing to grasp their properties are hence conceptually important. The usual scenario in these models is that two relevant gapped phases, separated by a gapless point, exist. In one of the phases, topological boundary states are absent, while the other one supports Majorana bound states. We show that a customary model violates this paradigm. The phase that should not host Majorana fermions supports a fractional soliton exponentially localized at only one end. By varying the parameters of the model, we describe analytically the transition between the fractional soliton and two Majorana fermions. Moreover, we provide a possible physical implementation of the model. We further characterize the symmetry of the superconducting pairing, showing that the odd-frequency component is intimately related to the spatial profile of the Majorana wavefunctions.

Quantum Phase Transitions in the Spin-Boson model: MonteCarlo Method vs Variational Approach a la Feynman

The effectiveness of the variational approach a la Feynman is proved in the spin-boson model, i.e. the simplest realization of the Caldeira-Leggett model able to reveal the quantum phase transition from delocalized to localized states and the quantum dissipation and decoherence effects induced by a heat bath. After exactly eliminating the bath degrees of freedom, we propose a trial, non local in time, interaction between the spin and itself simulating the coupling of the two level system with the bosonic bath. It stems from an Hamiltonian where the spin is linearly coupled to a finite number of harmonic oscillators whose frequencies and coupling strengths are variationally determined. We show that a very limited number of these fictitious modes is enough to get a remarkable agreement, up to very low temperatures, with the data obtained by using an approximation-free Monte Carlo approach, predicting: 1) in the Ohmic regime, a Beretzinski-Thouless-Kosterlitz quantum phase transition exhibiting the typical universal jump at the critical value; 2) in the sub-Ohmic regime ($s \leq 0.5$), mean field quantum phase transitions, with logarithmic corrections for $s=0.5$.

Coherent charge and spin oscillations induced by local quenches in nanowires with spin-orbit coupling

When a local and attractive potential is quenched in a nanowire, the spectrum changes its topology from a purely continuum to a continuum and discrete portion. We show that, under appropriate conditions, this quench leads to stable coherent oscillations in the observables time evolution. In particular, we demonstrate that ballistic nanowires with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) exposed to a uniform magnetic field are especially suitable to observe this effect. Indeed, while in ordinary nanowires the effect occurs only if the strength $U_0$ of the attractive potential is sufficiently strong, even a weak value of $U_0$ is sufficient in SOC nanowires. Furthermore, in these systems coherent oscillations in the spin sector can be generated and controlled electrically by quenching the gate voltage acting on the charge sector. We interpret the origin of this phenomenon, analyze the effect of variation of the chemical potential and the switching time of the quenched attractive potential, and address possible implementation schemes.

Feasible model for photo-induced interband pairing

Recently, it has been proposed that a mechanism for the appearance of non-equilibrium superconductivity in a resonantly driven semiconductor with repulsive interband interactions exists.~\cite{Goldstein_PRB15} The underlying microscopic model relies on the appearance of a specific fermionic dissipation mechanism and the careful simultaneous tailoring of the electronic dispersion relation and electron-electron interactions. We, instead, show that the phenomenon is rather general and does not need a special fine tuning of parameters. By considering a pair of bands with locally the same sign of concavity, we demonstrate that interband pairing arises under the natural assumption of the presence of phononic baths and radiative recombination. In light of these findings, we demonstrate how the emergence of superconductivity can be understood in terms of standard equilibrium interband BCS theory.

Dissipative dynamics of a driven qubit: interplay between non-adiabatic dynamics and noise effects from weak to strong coupling regime

We study the exact solution of the Schrödinger equation for the dissipative dynamics of a qubit, achieved by means of Short Iterative Lanczos method (SIL), which allows us to describe the qubit and the bath dynamics from weak to strong coupling regimes. We focus on two different models of a qubit in contact with the external environment: the first is the Spin Boson Model (SBM), which gives a description of the qubit in terms of static tunnelling energy and a bias field. The second model describes an externally driven qubit, where both the bias field and the tunnelling rate are controlled by a time-dependent magnetic field obeying to a finite time protocol. We show that in the SBM case, our solution correctly describes the crossover from coherent to incoherent behavior of the magnetization, occurring at the Toulouse point. Furthermore, we show that the bath response dramatically changes during the system dynamics, going from non-resonant at small times to resonant behavior at long times. When the external driving field is present, for fixed values of the drive duration our results show that the bath can provide beneficial effects to the success of the protocol. We find evidence for a complex interplay between non-adiabaticity of the protocol due to the external drive and dissipation effects, which strongly depends on the detailed form of the qubit-bath interaction.

Effective metal-insulator non-equilibrium quantum phase transition

We consider the steady state behavior of observables in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and in the one dimensional transverse field quantum Ising model after a sudden quantum quench of the parameter controlling the gap. In the thermodynamic limit, and for times $t\rightarrow\infty$, we find non-analyticities even in simple local observables as a function of the quench parameter, that is, a non-equilibrium quantum phase transition. We trace the appearance of this non-equilibrium quantum phase transition to an effective metal-insulator transition which occurs on the level of the generalized Gibbs Ensemble (describing the steady-state of the equilibrated system). Studying whether these transitions are robust, we find, in the paradigmatic case of the SSH model, that they persist for both quantum quench protocols of finite duration in time as well as thermal initial states, while they are washed out in the presence of fermion-fermion interactions and for finite system size.

Hong-Ou-Mandel characterization of multiply charged Levitons

We review and develop recent results regarding Leviton excitations generated in topological states of matter - such as integer and fractional quantum Hall edge channels - and carrying a charge multiple of the electronic one. The peculiar features associated to these clean and robust emerging excitations can be detected through current correlation measurements. In particular, relevant information can be extracted from the noise signal in generalized Hong-Ou-Mandel experiments, where Levitons with different charges collide against each other at a quantum point contact. We describe this quantity both in the framework of the photo-assisted noise formalism and in terms of a very interesting and transparent picture based on wave-packet overlap.

Enhancing photon squeezing one Leviton at a time

A mesoscopic device in the simple tunnel junction or quantum point contact geometry emits microwaves with remarkable quantum properties, when subjected to a sinusoidal drive in the GHz range. In particular, single and two-photon squeezing as well as entanglement in the frequency domain have been reported. By revising the photo-assisted noise analysis developed in the framework of electron quantum optics, we present a detailed comparison between the cosine drive case and other experimentally relavent periodic voltages such as rectangular and Lorentzian pulses. We show that the latter drive is the best candidate in order to enhance quantum features and purity of the outgoing single and two-photon states, a noteworthy result in a quantum information perspective.

Non-monotonic response and light-cone freezing in gapless-to-(partially) gapped quantum quenches of fermionic systems

The properties of prototypical examples of one-dimensional fermionic systems undergoing a sudden quantum quench from a gapless state to a (partially) gapped state are analyzed. By means of a Generalized Gibbs Ensemble analysis or by numerical solutions in the interacting cases, we observe an anomalous, non-monotonic response of steady state correlation functions as a function of the strength of the mechanism opening the gap. In order to interpret this result, we calculate the full dynamical evolution of these correlation functions, which shows a freezing of the propagation of the quench information (light cone) for large quenches. We argue that this freezing is responsible for the non-monotonous behaviour of observables. In continuum non-interacting models, this freezing can be traced back to a Klein-Gordon equation in the presence of a source term. We conclude by arguing in favour of the robustness of the phenomenon in the cases of non-sudden quenches and higher dimensionality.

Minimal excitations in the fractional quantum Hall regime

We study the minimal excitations of fractional quantum Hall edges, extending the notion of levitons to interacting systems. Using both perturbative and exact calculations, we show that they arise in response to a Lorentzian potential with quantized flux. They carry an integer charge, thus involving several Laughlin quasiparticles, and leave a Poissonian signature in a Hanbury-Brown and Twiss partition noise measurement at low transparency. This makes them readily accessible experimentally, ultimately offering the opportunity to study real-time transport of Abelian and non-Abelian excitations.

Polarized heat current generated by quantum pumping in two-dimensional topological insulators

We consider transport properties of a two dimensional topological insulator in a double quantum point contact geometry in presence of a time-dependent external field. In the proposed setup an external gate is placed above a single constriction and it couples only with electrons belonging to the top edge. This asymmetric configuration and the presence of an ac signal allow for a quantum pumping mechanism, which, in turn, can generate finite heat and charge currents in an unbiased device configuration. A microscopic model for the coupling with the external time-dependent gate potential is developed and the induced finite heat and charge currents are investigated. We demonstrate that in the non-interacting case, heat flow is associated with a single spin component, due to the helical nature of the edge states, and therefore a finite and polarized heat current is obtained in this configuration. The presence of e-e interchannel interactions strongly affects the current signal, lowering the degree of polarization of the system. Finally, we also show that separate heat and charge flows can be achieved, varying the amplitude of the external gate.

Universal transport dynamics in a quenched tunnel-coupled Luttinger liquid

The transport dynamics of a quenched Luttinger liquid tunnel-coupled to a fermionic reservoir is investigated. In the transient dynamics, we show that for a sudden quench of the electron interaction universal power-law decay in time of the tunneling current occurs, ascribed to the presence of entangled compound excitations created by the quench. In sharp contrast to the usual non universal power-law behavior of a zero-temperature non-quenched Luttinger liquid, the steady state tunneling current is ohmic and can be explained in terms of an effective quench-activated heating of the system. Our study unveils an unconventional dynamics for a quenched Luttinger liquid that could be identified in quenched cold Fermi gases.

Out of equilibrium density dynamics of a quenched fermionic system

Using a Luttinger liquid theory we investigate the time evolution of the particle density of a one-dimensional fermionic system with open boundaries and subject to a finite duration quench of the inter-particle interaction. We provide analytical and asymptotic solutions to the unitary time evolution of the system, showing that both switching on and switching off the quench ramp create light-cone perturbations in the density. The post-quench dynamics is strongly affected by the interference between these two perturbations. In particular, we find that the discrepancy between the time-dependent density and the one obtained by a generalized Gibbs ensemble picture vanishes with an oscillatory behavior as a function of the quench duration, with local minima corresponding to a perfect overlap of the two light-cone perturbations. For adiabatic quenches, we also obtain a similar behavior in the approach of the generalized Gibbs ensemble density towards the one associated with the ground state of the final Hamiltonian.

Finite frequency noise spectroscopy for fractional Hall states at ν = 5/2

We investigate the finite frequency noise of a quantum point contact at filling factor ν = 5/2 using a weakly coupled resonant LC circuit as a detector. We show how one could spectroscopically address the fractional charged excitations inspecting separately their charge and scaling dimensions. We thus compare the behaviour of the Pfaffian and the anti-Pfaffian non-Abelian edge states models in order to give possible experimental signatures to identify the appropriate model for this fractional quantum Hall states. Finally we investigate how the temperature of the LC resonant circuit can be used in order to enhance the sensibility of the measurement scheme.

Crystallization of fractional charges in a strongly interacting quasi-helical quantum dot

The ground-state electron density of a one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled quantum dot with a Zeeman term and strong electron interaction is studied at the fractional helical liquid points. We show that at fractional filling factors $ν=(2n+1)^{-1}$ (with $n$ a non-negative integer) the density oscillates with $N_{0}/ν$ peak. For $n\geq 1$ a number of peaks larger than the number of electrons $N_{0}$ suggests that a crystal of fractional quasi-particles with charge $νe$ (with $e$ the electron charge) occurs. The reported effect is amenable of verification via transport measurements in charged AFM-coupled dot.

Transient dynamics of an adiabatic NEMS

This paper is focused on the transient dynamics of an adiabatic nano-electromechanical system (NEMS), consisting of a nano-mechanical oscillator coupled to a quantum dot. By numerically solving the nonlinear stochastic differential equation governing the oscillator, the time evolution of the oscillator position, of the dot occupation number and of the current are studied. Different parameter settings are studied where the system exhibits bi-stable, tri-stable or mono-stable behavior on a finite-time horizon. It is shown that, after a typically long transient, the system under investigation exhibits no hysteretic behavior and that a unique steady state is reached, independently of the initial conditions. The transient dynamics is marked out by one or two well separated characteristic times, depending on the considered case (i.e., mono- or multi-stable). We evaluate these times for a dot on-resonance or off-resonance. It turns out that the characteristic time scales are long in comparison to the period of the uncoupled oscillator, particularly at low bias, suggesting that the predicted transient dynamics may be observed in state-of-the-art experimental setups.

Anomalous Friedel oscillations in a quasi-helical quantum dot

The charge and spin patterns of a quantum dot embedded into a spin-orbit coupled quantum wire subject to a magnetic field are investigated. A Luttinger liquid theory is developed, taking into account open boundaries and finite magnetic field. In the quasi-helical regime, when spin-orbit effects dominate over the Zeeman interaction, peculiar states develop at the Fermi surface of the dot. Anomalous Friedel oscillations with twice the expected wavelength develop in the wavefunction of collective excitations of such states, accompanied by peculiar spin patterns in their magnetization. Both effects are analyzed in detail and shown possible to be probed in transport experiments. The stability against electron interactions and magnetic field is investigated. We also discuss how signatures of such states survive in the total charge and spin densities.
