Direct observation of interatomic Coulombic decay and subsequent ion-atom scattering in helium nanodroplets

We report on the experimental observation of interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) in pure $^4$He nanoclusters of mean sizes between $N \approx$ 5000 and 30000 and the subsequent scattering of energetic He$^+$ fragments inside the neutral cluster by using cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy. ICD is induced in He clusters by using vacuum ultraviolet light of $hν=$ 67 eV from the BESSY II synchrotron. The electronic decay creates two neighboring ions in the cluster at a well-defined distance. The measured fragment energies and angular correlations show that a main energy loss mechanism of these ions inside the cluster is a single hard binary collision with one atom of the cluster.

Frustrated Coulomb explosion of small helium clusters

Almost ten years ago, energetic neutral hydrogen atoms were detected after a strong-field double ionization of H$_2$. This process, called 'frustrated tunneling ionization', occurs when an ionized electron is recaptured after being driven back to its parent ion by the electric field of a femtosecond laser. In the present study we demonstrate that a related process naturally occurs in clusters without the need of an external field: we observe a charge hopping that occurs during a Coulomb explosion of a small helium cluster, which leads to an energetic neutral helium atom. This claim is supported by theoretical evidence. As an analog to 'frustrated tunneling ionization', we term this process 'frustrated Coulomb explosion'.

Determination of the He-He, Ne-Ne, Ar-Ar, and H$_{2}$ interaction potential by wave function imaging

We report on a direct method to measure the internuclear potential energy curve of diatomic systems. A COLTRIMS reaction microscope was used to measure the squares of the vibrational wave functions of H$_{2}$, He$_{2}$, Ne$_{2}$, and Ar$_{2}$. The Schrödinger equation relates the curvature of the wave function to the potential V(R) and therefore offers a simple but elegant way to extract the shape of the potential.

The role of spin and angular momentum in strong-field ionization

The spin polarization of electrons from multiphoton ionization of Xe by 395 nm circularly polarized laser pulses at $6\cdot10^{13}$ W/cm$^2$ has been measured. At this photon energy of 3.14 eV the above threshold ionization peaks connected to Xe$^+$ ions in the ground state ($J=3/2$, ionization potential $I_p=12.1$ eV) and the first exicted state ($J=1/2$, $I_p=13.4$ eV) are clearly separated in the electron energy distribution. These two combs of ATI peaks show opposite spin polarizations. The magnitude of the spin polarization is a factor of two higher for the $J=1/2$ than for the $J=3/2$ final ionic state. In turn the data show that the ionization probability is strongly dependent on the sign of the magnetic quantum number.

Non-Sequential Double Ionization by Counter Rotating Circularly Polarized Two-Color Laser Fields

We report on non-sequential double ionization of Ar by a laser pulse consisting of two counter rotating circularly polarized fields (390 nm and 780 nm). The double ionization probability depends strongly on the relative intensity of the two fields and shows a "knee"-like structure as function of intensity. We conclude that double ionization is driven by a beam of nearly monoenergetic recolliding electrons, which can be controlled in intensity and energy by the field parameters. The electron momentum distributions show the recolliding electron as well as a second electron which escapes from an intermediate excited state of Ar$^+$.

Interatomic-Coulombic-decay-induced recapture of photoelectrons in helium dimers

We investigate the onset of photoionization shakeup induced interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) in He2 at the He+*(n = 2) threshold by detecting two He+ ions in coincidence. We find this threshold to be shifted towards higher energies compared to the same threshold in the monomer. The shifted onset of ion pairs created by ICD is attributed to a recapture of the threshold photoelectron after the emission of the faster ICD electron.

Absolute cross sections for photoionization of Xe$^{q+}$ ions (1 $\le$ q $\le$ 5) at the 3d ionization threshold

The photon-ion merged-beams technique has been employed at the new Photon-Ion spectrometer at PETRA III (PIPE) for measuring multiple photoionization of Xe$^{q+}$ (q=1-5) ions. Total ionization cross sections have been obtained on an absolute scale for the dominant ionization reactions of the type hν+ Xe$^{q+}$ $\to$ Xe$^{r+}$ + (q-r) e$^-$ with product charge states q+2 $\le$ r $\le$ q+5. Prominent ionization features are observed in the photon-energy range 650-750 eV, which are associated with excitation or ionization of an inner-shell 3d electron. Single-configuration Dirac-Fock calculations agree quantitatively with the experimental cross sections for non-resonant photoabsorption, but fail to reproduce all details of the measured ionization resonance structures.

A measurement of the evolution of Interatomic Coulombic Decay in the time domain

During the last 15 years a novel decay mechanism of excited atoms has been discovered and investigated. This so called ''Interatomic Coulombic Decay'' (ICD) involves the chemical environment of the electronically excited atom: the excitation energy is transferred (in many cases over long distances) to a neighbor of the initially excited particle usually ionizing that neighbor. It turned out that ICD is a very common decay route in nature as it occurs across van-der-Waals and hydrogen bonds. The time evolution of ICD is predicted to be highly complex, as its efficiency strongly depends on the distance of the atoms involved and this distance typically changes during the decay. Here we present the first direct measurement of the temporal evolution of ICD using a novel experimental approach.

Spatial imaging of the {H_2}^+ vibrational wave function at the quantum limit

We experimentally obtained a direct image of the nuclear wave functions of {H_2}^+ by dissociating the molecule via electron attachment and determining the vibrational state using the COLTRIMS technique. Our experiment visualizes the nodal structure of different vibrational states. We compare our results to the widely used reflection approximation and to quantum simulations and discuss the limits of position measurements in molecules imposed by the uncertainty principle.

Carbon K-shell Photo Ionization of CO: Molecular frame angular Distributions of normal and conjugate shakeup Satellites

We have measured the molecular frame angular distributions of photoelectrons emitted from the Carbon K shell of fixed-in-space CO molecules for the case of simultaneous excitation of the remaining molecular ion. Normal and conjugate shake up states are observed. Photo electrons belonging to normal Σ-satellite lines show an angular distribution resembling that observed for the main photoline at the same electron energy. Surprisingly a similar shape is found for conjugate shake up states with Π-symmetry. In our data we identify shake rather than electron scattering (PEVE) as the mechanism producing the conjugate lines. The angular distributions clearly show the presence of a Σ-shape resonance for all of the satellite lines.

Interatomic Coulombic Decay following Photoionization of the Helium Dimer: Observation of Vibrational Structure

Using synchrotron radiation we simultaneously ionize and excite one helium atom of a helium dimer (He_2) in a shakeup process. The populated states of the dimer ion (i.e. He^[*+](n = 2; 3)-He) are found to deexcite via interatomic coulombic decay. This leads to the emission of a second electron from the neutral site and a subsequent coulomb explosion. In this letter we present a measurement of the momenta of fragments that are created during this reaction. The electron energy distribution and the kinetic energy release of the two He^+ ions show pronounced oscillations which we attribute to the structure of the vibrational wave function of the dimer ion.

Single photon double ionization of the helium dimer

We show that a single photon can ionize the two helium atoms of the helium dimer in a distance up to 10 °A. The energy sharing among the electrons, the angular distributions of the ions and electrons as well as comparison with electron impact data for helium atoms suggest a knock-off type double ionization process. The Coulomb explosion imaging of He_2 provides a direct view of the nuclear wave function of this by far most extended and most diffuse of all naturally existing molecules.

Localization of Inner-Shell Photoelectron Emission and Interatomic Coulombic Decay in Ne$_2$

We used Cold Target Recoil Ion Momentum Spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) to investigate the decay of Ne$_2$ after K-shell photoionization. The breakup into Ne$^{1+}$ / Ne$^{2+}$ shows interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) occurring after a preceding atomic Auger decay. The molecular frame angular distributions of the photoelectron and the ICD electron show distinct, asymmetric features, which imply localization of the K-vacancy created at one of the two atomic sites of the Ne$_2$ and an emission of the ICD electron from a localized site. The experimental results are supported by calculations in frozen core Hartree-Fock approach.
