Generalized parton correlation functions for a spin-0 hadron

The fully unintegrated, off-diagonal quark-quark correlator for a spin-0 hadron is parameterized in terms of so-called generalized parton correlation functions. Such objects are of relevance for the phenomenology of certain hard exclusive reactions. In particular, they can be considered as {\it mother distributions} of generalized parton distributions on the one hand and transverse momentum dependent parton distributions on the other. Therefore, our study provides new, model-independent insights into the recently proposed nontrivial relations between generalized and transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. As a by-product we obtain the first complete classification of generalized parton distributions beyond leading twist.

Generalized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions of the nucleon

We present first results from our analysis of the most general quark-quark correlator of the nucleon, which can be parameterized in terms of so-called generalized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. These results include the first complete parameterization of the nucleon GPDs and TMDs to all twists as well as new results on possible nontrivial relations between them.

Sivers effect at Hermes, Compass and Clas12

Single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets give information on, among other fascinating effects, a pseudo time-reversal odd parton distribution function, the 'Sivers function'. In this proceeding we review the extractions of this function from HERMES and COMPASS data. In particular, the HERMES pion and kaon data suggest significant sea-quarks contributions at $x \simeq 0.15$ to the Sivers effect. We present a new fit that includes all relevant sea quark distributions and gives a statistically satisfactory overall description of the data, but does not describe ideally the $K^+$ data from HERMES. We argue that measurements of the pion- and kaon Sivers effect at CLAS12, and COMPASS, will clarify the situation.

Relations between GPDs and TMDs: model results and beyond

Comparing the respective structures of the correlators defining generalized and transverse momentum dependent parton distributions, one finds possible relations between these two objects. Although it looks like the relations found do not hold in general, we show that they can be established at least in simple spectator model calculations. In addition, we discuss these relations in the context of generalized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions.

Transversity and Transverse Spin in Nucleon Structure through SIDIS at Jefferson Lab

The JLab 12 GeV upgrade with a proposed solenoid detector and the CLAS12 detector can provide the granularity and three-dimensional kinematic coverage in longitudinal and transverse momentum, $0.1\le x \le 0.5$, $0.3 \le z \le 0.7$ with $P_T \le 1.5 {\rm GeV}$ to precisely measure the leading twist chiral-odd and $T$-odd quark distribution and fragmentation functions in SIDIS. The large $x$ experimental reach of these detectors with a 12 GeV CEBAF at JLab makes it {\em ideal} to obtain precise data on the {\em valence-dominated} transversity distribution function and to access the tensor charge.

Transverse single spin asymmetries in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering

In inclusive deep-inelastic lepton-hadron scattering multi-photon exchange between the leptonic and the hadronic part of the process causes single spin asymmetries. The asymmetries exist for a polarized target as well as a polarized incoming or outgoing lepton, if the polarization vector has a component transverse with respect to the reaction plane. The spin dependent parts of the single polarized cross sections are suppressed like $α_{em} m_{pol}/Q$ - where $m_{pol}$ denotes the mass of the polarized particle - compared to the leading terms of the cross section for unpolarized or double-polarized deep-inelastic scattering. Both the target and the beam spin asymmetry are evaluated in the parton model. In the calculation only quark-quark correlators are included. While this approximation turns out to be justified for the lepton spin asymmetries, it is not sufficient for the target asymmetry.

Light-cone divergence in twist-3 correlation functions

It is argued that the definition of the twist-3 transverse momentum dependent correlation functions must be modified if they contain light-like Wilson lines. In the framework of a simple spectator model of the nucleon we show explicitly the presence of a light-cone divergence for a specific twist-3 time-reversal odd parton density. This divergence emerges for all eight twist-3 T-odd correlators and appears also in the case of a quark target in perturbative QCD. The divergence can be removed by using non-light-like Wilson lines. Based on our results we argue that currently there exists no established factorization formula for transverse momentum dependent twist-3 observables in semi-inclusive DIS and related processes.

Checking the Burkardt sum rule for the Sivers function by model calculations

The Sivers mechanism gives rise to a non-zero average transverse momentum of partons inside a transversely polarized target. According to a sum rule of Burkardt this transverse momentum vanishes when summing over all partons. We explicitly check the Burkardt sum rule by means of one-loop calculations for a quark target in perturbative QCD and for a diquark spectator model of the nucleon. In both cases the sum rule is fulfilled.

Parameterization of the quark-quark correlator of a spin-1/2 hadron

The general parameterization of the quark-quark correlation function for a spin-1/2 hadron is considered. The presence of the Wilson line ensuring color gauge invariance of the correlator induces structures that were not given explicitly in the existing literature. In particular, the general form of the transverse momentum dependent correlator entering various hard scattering processes is derived. In this case two new time-reversal odd parton distributions appear at the twist-3 level.

Recent progress in the understanding of single spin asymmetries

Over the past years a lot of progress has been made in the understanding of single spin asymmetries in hard scattering processes. We briefly review this subject, covering the non-vanishing of time-reversal odd parton distributions, universality of fragmentation functions, and the discovery of previously unknown time-reversal odd parton distributions at subleading twist. Interestingly enough, all these developments were initiated by simple model calculations.

Twist-3 Single-Spin Asymmetries in Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering

The single spin asymmetries for a longitudinally polarized lepton beam or a longitudinally polarized nucleon target in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering are twist-3 observables. We study these asymmetries in a simple diquark spectator model of the nucleon. Analogous to the case of transverse target polarization, non-vanishing asymmetries are generated by gluon exchange between the struck quark and the target system. It is pointed out that the coupling of the virtual photon to the diquark is needed in order to preserve electromagnetic gauge invariance at the twist-3 level. The calculation indicates that previous analyses of these observables are incomplete.

On the validity of Lorentz invariance relations between parton distributions

Lorentz invariance relations connecting twist-3 parton distributions with transverse momentum dependent twist-2 distributions have been proposed previously. These relations can be extracted from a covariant decomposition of the quark-quark correlator. It is argued, however, that the derivation of the Lorentz invariance relations fails if the path-ordered exponential is taken into account in the correlator. The model independent analysis is supplemented by an explicit calculation of the corresponding parton distributions in perturbative QCD with a quark target, and in a simple spectator model. We also clarify the status of a specific calculation of time-reversal even parton distributions in light-cone gauge.
