Science for Peace and the need for Civil Clauses at universities and civilian research institutions

After the end of World War II, the commitment to confine scientific activities in universities and research institutions to peaceful and civilian purposes has entered, in the form of {\it Civil Clauses}, the charters of many research institutions and universities. In the wake of recent world events, the relevance and scope of such Civil Clauses has been questioned in reports issued by some governments and by the EU Commission, a development that opens the door to a possible blurring of the distinction between peaceful and military research. This paper documents the reflections stimulated by a panel discussion on this issue recently organized by the Science4Peace Forum. We review the adoptions of Civil Clauses in research organizations and institutions in various countries, present evidence of the challenges that are emerging to such Civil Clauses, and collect arguments in favour of maintaining the purely civilian and peaceful focus of public (non-military) research.

Science4Peace: A Plea for Continued Peaceful International Scientific Cooperation (Input to the European Strategy for Particle Physics -- 2026 update)

The European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) - 2026 update is taking place in a turbulent international climate. Many of the norms that have governed relations between states for decades are being broken or challenged. The future progress of science in general, and particle physics in particular, will depend on our ability to maintain peaceful international scientific collaboration in the face of political pressures. We plead that the ESPP 2026 update acknowledge explicitly the importance of peaceful international scientific collaboration, not only for the progress of science, but also as a precious bridge between geopolitical blocs. Sub-TeV hadronic interaction model differences and their impact on air showers

In the sub-TeV regime, the most widely used hadronic interaction models disagree significantly in their predictions of particle spectra from cosmic ray induced air showers. We investigate the nature and impact of model uncertainties, focussing on air shower primaries with energies around the transition between high and low energy hadronic interaction models, where the dissimilarities are largest and which constitute the bulk of the interactions in air showers.

Heavy-flavor production and medium properties in high-energy nuclear collisions - What next?

Open and hidden heavy-flavor physics in high-energy nuclear collisions are entering a new and exciting stage towards reaching a clearer understanding of the new experimental results with the possibility to link them directly to the advancement in lattice Quantum Chromo-dynamics (QCD). Recent results from experiments and theoretical developments regarding open and hidden heavy-flavor dynamics have been debated at the Lorentz Workshop "Tomography of the quark-gluon plasma with heavy quarks}, which was held in October 2016 in Leiden, the Netherlands. In this contribution, we summarize identified common understandings and developed strategies for the upcoming five years, which aim at achieving a profound knowledge of the dynamical properties of the quark-gluon plasma.

Kernel based unfolding of data obtained from detectors with finite resolution and limited acceptance

A kernel based procedure for correcting experimental data for distortions due to the finite resolution and limited detector acceptance is presented. The unfolding problem is known to be an ill-posed problem that can not be solved without some a priori information about solution such as, for example, smoothness or positivity. In the approach presented here the true distribution is estimated by a weighted sum of kernels, with the width of the kernels acting as a regularization parameter responsible for the smoothness of the result. Cross-validation is used to determine an optimal value for this parameter. A numerical example with a simulation study of systematical and statistical errors is presented to illustrate the procedure.

Multi-Parton Interactions at the LHC

We review the recent progress in the theoretical description and experimental observation of multiple parton interactions. Subjects covered include experimental measurements of minimum bias interactions and of the underlying event, models of soft physics implemented in Monte Carlo generators, developments in the theoretical description of multiple parton interactions and phenomenological studies of double parton scattering. This article stems from contributions presented at the Helmholtz Alliance workshop on "Multi-Parton Interactions at the LHC", DESY Hamburg, 13-15 September 2010.

Spectrum and Charge Ratio of Vertical Cosmic Ray Muons up to Momenta of 2.5 TeV/c

The ALEPH detector at LEP has been used to measure the momentum spectrum and charge ratio of vertical cosmic ray muons underground. The sea-level cosmic ray muon spectrum for momenta up to 2.5 TeV/c has been obtained by correcting for the overburden of 320 meter water equivalent (mwe). The results are compared with Monte Carlo models for air shower development in the atmosphere. From the analysis of the spectrum the total flux and the spectral index of the cosmic ray primaries is inferred. The charge ratio suggests a dominantly light composition of cosmic ray primaries with energies up to 10^15 eV.

A statistical method for luminosity monitoring in high energy collider experiments

A statistical method which uses a combination of two subdetectors to monitor the luminosity in high energy interactions is presented. To illustrate its performance, this method was applied to random triggered minimum bias data collected in the commissioning period of the HERA-B experiment in spring 2000. It is found that luminosity estimates with an intrinsic systematic error of 3% can be obtained.

MINT - A Simple Model for Low Energy Hadronic Interactions

The bulk of inelastic hadronic interactions is characterized by longitudinal phase space and exponentially damped transverse momentum spectra. A simple model with only a single adjustable parameter is presented, making it a very convenient tool for systematic studies, which gives a surprisingly good description of pA-collisions at 920 GeV beam energy.

DIRAC - Distributed Infrastructure with Remote Agent Control

This paper describes DIRAC, the LHCb Monte Carlo production system. DIRAC has a client/server architecture based on: Compute elements distributed among the collaborating institutes; Databases for production management, bookkeeping (the metadata catalogue) and software configuration; Monitoring and cataloguing services for updating and accessing the databases. Locally installed software agents implemented in Python monitor the local batch queue, interrogate the production database for any outstanding production requests using the XML-RPC protocol and initiate the job submission. The agent checks and, if necessary, installs any required software automatically. After the job has processed the events, the agent transfers the output data and updates the metadata catalogue. DIRAC has been successfully installed at 18 collaborating institutes, including the DataGRID, and has been used in recent Physics Data Challenges. In the near to medium term future we must use a mixed environment with different types of grid middleware or no middleware. We describe how this flexibility has been achieved and how ubiquitously available grid middleware would improve DIRAC.
