Growth of Sr1-xCaxRuO3 thin films by metalorganic aerosol deposition

We report the growth of thin films of Sr1-xCaxRuO3 on SrTiO3 and MgO substrates by metalorganic aerosol deposition. The structure and microstructure is characterized by X-ray diffraction and room-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), respectively. STM indicates in-plane epitaxy and a small surface roughness for films on SrTiO3. The high-quality of the films is supported by large residual resistivity ratios up to 29.

Ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RuO$_3$ thin films

The ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in the perovskite ruthenate Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RuO$_3$ is studied by low-temperature magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements on thin films. The films were grown epitaxially on SrTiO$_3$ substrates using metalorganic aerosol deposition and characterized by X-ray diffraction and room temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. High residual resistivity ratios of 29 and 16 for $x=0$ and $x=1$, respectively, prove the high quality of the investigated samples. We observe a continuous suppression of the ferromagnetic Curie temperature from $T_C=160$ K at $x=0$ towards $T_C\to 0$ at $x_c\approx 0.8$. The analysis of the electrical resistivity between 2 and 10 K reveals $T^2$ and $T^{3/2}$ behavior at $x\leq 0.6$ and $x\geq 0.7$, respectively. For undoped CaRuO$_3$, the measurement has been extended down to 60 mK, revealing a crossover to $T^2$ behavior around 2 K, which suggests a Fermi-liquid ground state in this system.

The electronic structure of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films and its $T_c$ dependence as studied by angle-resolved photoemission

We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results for thin films of the three-dimensional manganese perovskite La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$. We show that the transition temperature ($T_c$) from the paramagnetic insulating to ferromagnetic metallic state is closely related to details of the electronic structure, particularly to the spectral weight at the ${\bf k}$-point, where the sharpest step at the Fermi level was observed. We found that this ${\bf k}$-point is the same for all the samples, despite their different $T_c$. The change of $T_c$ is discussed in terms of kinetic energy optimization. Our ARPES results suggest that the change of the electronic structure for the samples having different transition temperatures is different from the rigid band shift.

Low Field, Current-Hysteretic Oscillations in Spin Transfer Nanocontacts

We have measured spin-transfer-driven, large amplitude, current hysteretic, low frequency (< 500 MHz), narrowband oscillations in nanocontacts made to spin valve structures. The oscillations occur in zero field, persist up to 5 mT for in plane applied fields, and to beyond 400 mT for out of plane fields. Unlike previous measurements, the oscillation frequency is well below that for uniform-mode ferromagnetic resonance, is only a weak function of applied field, and is highly anharmonic. The oscillations are hysteretic with applied dc current, appearing at high currents but persisting to lower currents upon decrease of the current. We suggest that these observations are consistent with the dynamics of a nonuniform magnetic state in the vicinity of the contact nucleated by both the spin transfer torque and dc current-generated Oersted fields, with the dynamics driven by spin transfer. The electrical oscillation amplitudes are large and narrowband, with the largest amplitudes on the order of 1 mV and the narrowest linewidths below 1 MHz.

Discovery of TeV Gamma-Ray Emission from the Cygnus Region of the Galaxy

The diffuse gamma radiation arising from the interaction of cosmic ray particles with matter and radiation in the Galaxy is one of the few probes available to study the origin of the cosmic rays. Milagro is a water Cherenkov detector that continuously views the entire overhead sky. The large field-of-view combined with the long observation time makes Milagro the most sensitive instrument available for the study of large, low surface brightness sources such as the diffuse gamma radiation arising from interactions of cosmic radiation with interstellar matter. In this paper we present spatial and flux measurements of TeV gamma-ray emission from the Cygnus Region. The TeV image shows at least one new source MGRO J2019+37 as well as correlations with the matter density in the region as would be expected from cosmic-ray proton interactions. However, the TeV gamma-ray flux as measured at ~12 TeV from the Cygnus region (after excluding MGRO J2019+37) exceeds that predicted from a conventional model of cosmic ray production and propagation. This observation indicates the existence of either hard-spectrum cosmic-ray sources and/or other sources of TeV gamma rays in the region.

Using Galaxy Two-point Correlation Functions to Determine the Redshift Distributions of Galaxies Binned by Photometric Redshift

We investigate how well the redshift distributions of galaxies sorted into photometric redshift bins can be determined from the galaxy angular two-point correlation functions. We find that the uncertainty in the reconstructed redshift distributions depends critically on the number of parameters used in each redshift bin and the range of angular scales used, but not on the number of photometric redshift bins. Using six parameters for each photometric redshift bin, and restricting ourselves to angular scales over which the galaxy number counts are normally distributed, we find that errors in the reconstructed redshift distributions are large; i.e., they would be the dominant source of uncertainty in cosmological parameters estimated from otherwise ideal weak lensing or baryon acoustic oscillation data. However, either by reducing the number of free parameters in each redshift bin, or by (unjustifiably) applying our Gaussian analysis into the non-Gaussian regime, we find that the correlation functions can be used to reconstruct the redshift distributions with moderate precision; e.g., with mean redshifts determined to around 0.01. We also find that dividing the galaxies into two spectral types, and thereby doubling the number of redshift distribution parameters, can result in a reduction in the errors in the combined redshift distributions.

Evolution of the density of states at EF of Bi2-yPbySr2-xLaxCuO6+d and Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+d cuprates with hole doping

Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+d and Bi2-yPbySr2-xLaxCuO6+d high-Tc superconductors in a wide doping range from overdoped to heavily underdoped were studied by X-ray absorption and photo-emission spectroscopy. The hole concentration p was determined by an analysis of the Cu L3-absorption edge. Besides the occupied density of states derived from photoemission, the un-occupied density of states was determined from the prepeak of the O K-absorption edge. Both, the occupied as well as the unoccupied density of states reveal the same dependence on hole doping, i.e. a continuous increase with increasing doping in the hole underdoped region and a constant density in the hole overdoped region. By comparing these results of single-layer BSLCO with previous results on single-layer LSCO it could be argued that besides the localized holes on Cu sites the CuO2-planes consist of two types of doped holes, from which the so-called mobile holes determine the intensity of the prepeak of the O 1s absorption edge.

Systematic X-ray absorption study of hole doping in BSCCO - phases

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) on the O 1s threshold was applied to Bi-based, single crystalline high temperature superconductors (HTc's), whose hole densities in the CuO2 planes was varied by different methods. XAS gives the intensity of the so-called pre-peak of the O 1s line due to the unoccupied part of the Zhang-Rice (ZR) singlet state. The effects of variation of the number n of CuO2 - planes per unit cell (n = 1,2,3) and the effect of La-substitution for Sr for the n = 1 and n = 2 phase were studied systematically. Furthermore the symmetry of the states could be probed by the polarization of the impinging radiation.

Fermi surface and superconducting gap of triple-layered Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d

We present a comprehensive study performed with high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on triple-layered Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d single crystals. By measurements above TC the Fermi surface topology defined by the Fermi level crossings of the CuO2-derived band was determined. A hole-like Fermi surface as for single and double-CuO2 layered Bi-based cuprates is found, giving new input to the current debate of the general Fermi surface topology of the high Tc superconductors. Furthermore, we present measurements of the superconducting gap of Bi-2223 and show that there are clear indications for a strong anisotropy of the superconducting gap. The universal properties of this phase in comparison to the other Bi-based cuprates will be discussed.

Fermi surface map of the single-layer Bi-cuprate Bi_2Sr_(2-x)La_xCuO_(6+delta) at optimal doping

A first Fermi surface map of a single-layer high-Tc superconductor is presented. The experiments were carried out on optimally doped Bi_2Sr_(2-x)La_xCuO_(6+delta)(x=0.40) with synchrotron radiation which allow to discuss in detail the strong polarisation dependence of the emissions near the Fermi edge. For the cuprates only little is known about the impact of the electron-photon matrix element determining the photoelectron intensity. For the example of the model layered superconductor Bi_2Sr_(2-x)La_xCuO_(6+delta)it will be demonstrated that the polarization geometry has significant influence on the energy distribution curves at EF and consequently also for the determination of the topology and character of the Fermi surface (FS) by angle-resolved photoemission. For further clarification also a FS map of the n=2 material Bi-2212 has been measured applying a different polarisation geometry as previously used by Saini et al.. In the context of the current debate on the character of the Fermi surface of Bi-cuprates our results confirm a hole-like Fermi surface for n=1 as well as n=2 material, what might be the universal FS for high-Tc superconductors.

Specific heat and disorder in the mixed state of non-magnetic borocarbides

The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the specific heat cp(T,H) in the superconducting mixed state as well as the upper critical field Hc2(T) have been measured for polycrystalline Y_xLu_{1-x}Ni_2B_2C and Y(Ni_{1-y}Pt_y)_2B_2C samples. The linear-in-T electronic specific heat contribution gamma(H)T exhibits significant deviations from the usual linear-in-H law for all x and y the transition metal site (T) resulting in a disorder dependent negative curvature of gamma(H). The deviations from that linear behaviour of our unsubstituted samples are the largest reported so far for any superconductor. The H_c2(T) data point to the quasi-clean limit for (Y,Lu)-substitutions and to a transition to the quasi-dirty limit for (Ni,Pt)-substitutions. The gamma(H) dependence is discussed in the unitary d-wave as well as in the quasi-clean s-wave limits. From a consideration of gamma(H) data only, d-wave pairing cannot be ruled out.

Novel Fine-Structure in the Low-Energy Excitation Spectrum of a High-Tc Superconductor by Polarization Dependent Photoemission

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is performed on single crystals of the single-layer high-Tc superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2-x)La(x)CuO(6+d) at optimal doping (x=0.4) in order to study in great detail the Zhang-Rice (ZR) singlet band at the Fermi level. Besides the high crystal quality the advantages of a single-layer material are the absence of bilayer effects and the distinct reduction of thermal broadening. Due to the high energy and angle resolution and, most important, due to the controlled variation of the polarization vector of the synchrotron radiation the emission from the ZR singlet band reveals a distinct fine-structure. It consists of two maxima, the first showing only weak and the second at EF extremely strong polarization dependence. However, our observation has enormous consequences for line shape analyses and the determination of pseudo gaps by photoemission.

Specific heat of (Y,Lu)Ni2B2C in the mixed state

The temperature and magnetic field dependences of the electronic specific heat in the superconducting mixed state as well as the upper critical field have been measured on a (Y,Lu)Ni2B2C series to study the influence of disorder. The electronic specific heat in the vortex state shows deviations from the usual gamma(H) proportional to H-law for conventional superconductors for all samples resulting in a disorder dependent negative curvature of gamma proportional to H sup(1-beta). For samples with disorder at the R site beta and the positive curvature exponent alpha of H sub(c2) are reduced but alpha, beta remain always positive, as distinct from much stronger disorder due to Pt substions at the Ni site where alpha, beta rapidly tend to 0. Alpha shows a minimum at equal Y and Lu concentration. H sub(c2)(00, T sub(c), the curvatures of H sub(c2) and gamma(h), as well as the normal state Sommerfeld constant gamma sub(N) are reduced similarly.

Instrumented Water Tanks can Improve Air Shower Detector Sensitivity

Previous works have shown that water Cherenkov detectors have superior sensitivity to those of scintillation counters as applied to detecting extensive air showers (EAS). This is in large part due to their much higher sensitivity to EAS photons which are more than five times more numerous than EAS electrons. Large area water Cherenkov detectors can be constructed relatively cheaply and operated reliably. A sparse detector array has been designed which uses these types of detectors to substantially increase the area over which the Milagro Gamma Ray Observatory collects EAS information. Improvements to the Milagro detector's performance characteristics and sensitivity derived from this array and preliminary results from a prototype array currently installed near the Milagro detector will be presented.

Calibration of the Milagro Cosmic Ray Telescope

The Milagro detector is an air shower array which uses the water Cherenkov technique and is capable of continuously monitoring the sky at energies near 1 TeV. The detector consists of 20000 metric tons of pure water instrumented with 723 photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs). The PMTs are arranged in a two-layer structure on a lattice of 3 m spacing covering 5000 $m^2$ area. The direction of the shower is determined from the relative timing of the PMT signals, necessitating a common time reference and amplitude slewing corrections to improve the time resolution. The calibration system to provide these consists of a pulsed laser driving 30 diffusing light sources deployed in the pond to allow cross-calibration of the PMTs. The system is capable of calibrating times and the pulse-heights from the PMTs using the time-over-threshold technique. The absolute energy scale is provided using single muons passing through the detector. The description of the calibration system of the Milagro detector and its prototype Milagrito will be presented.

Status of the Milagro Gamma Ray Observatory

The Milagro Gamma Ray Observatory is the world's first large-area water Cherenkov detector capable of continuously monitoring the sky at TeV energies. Located in northern New Mexico, Milagro will perform an all sky survey of the Northern Hemisphere at energies between ~250 GeV and 50 TeV. With a high duty cycle, large detector area (~5000 square meters), and a wide field-of-view (~1 sr), Milagro is uniquely capable of searching for transient and DC sources of high-energy gamma-ray emission. Milagro has been operating since February, 1999. The current status of the Milagro Observatory and initial results will be discussed.

Milagrito Detection of TeV Emission from Mrk 501

The Milagro water Cherenkov detector near Los Alamos, New Mexico, has been operated as a sky monitor at energies of a few TeV between February 1997 and April 1998. Serving as a test run for the full Milagro detector, Milagrito has taken data during the strong and long-lasting 1997 flare of Mrk 501. We present results from the analysis of Mrk 501 and compare the excess and background rates with expectations from the detector simulations.

Search for a TeV Component of GRBs using the Milagrito Detector

Observing gamma ray bursts (GRBs) in the TeV energy range can be extremely valuable in providing insight to GRB radiation mechanisms and in constraining source distances. The Milagrito detector was an air shower array which used the water Cherenkov technique to search for TeV sources. Data from this detector was analyzed to look for a TeV component of GRBs coincident with low energy -rays detected by the BATSE instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. A sample of 54 BATSE GRBs which were in the field of view of the Milagrito detector during its lifetime (February 1997 to May 1998) was used.
