The Interplay of Single Ion Anisotropy and Magnetic 3d-4f Interactions in V$^{\rm III}_2$Ln$^{\rm III}_2$ Butterfly Complexes

Within the framework of 3d-4f molecular magnets, the most thoroughly investigated architecture is that of butterfly-shaped coordination clusters as it provides an ideal testbed to study fundamental magnetic interactions. Here, we report the synthesis and characterisation of a series of isostructural V$^{\rm III}_2$Ln$^{\rm III}_2$ butterfly complexes, where Ln = Y (1Y), Tb (2Tb), Dy (3Dy), Ho (4Ho), Er (5Er), Tm (6Tm), Yb (7Yb), which extends the previous study on isostructural butterflies with Cr$^{\rm III}$, Mn$^{\rm III}$ and Fe$^{\rm III}$. In zero external field, compounds 2Tb, 3Dy and 4Ho show clear maxima in the out-of-phase component of the ac susceptibility whereas small magnetic fields are needed to suppress quantum tunneling in 6Tm. Combined high-field electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and magnetisation measurements unambiguously reveal an easy-plane anisotropy of the V$^{\rm III}$ ion and antiferromagnetic Ising-like 3d-4f exchange couplings. The strength of $J_{\rm 3d-4f}$ is shown to decrease upon variation of the 4f ion from Tb to Ho, while increasing antiferromagnetic interaction can be observed from Ho to Tm. The exact inverse chemical trend is found for the relative angle between the 3d and 4f main anisotropy axes, which highlights the important role of the lanthanide 4f electron distribution anisotropy for 3d-4f exchange.

NLO and off-shell effects in top quark mass determinations

We study the impact of different theoretical descriptions of top quark pair production on top quark mass measurements in the di-lepton channel. To this aim, the full NLO corrections to $pp\rightarrow W^+W^-b\bar b\rightarrow (e^+ ν_e)\,(μ^- \barν_μ)\,b\bar b$ production are compared to calculations in the narrow width approximation, where the production of a top quark pair is calculated at NLO and combined with three different descriptions of the top quark decay: leading order, next-to-leading order and via a parton shower. The different theory predictions then enter the calibration of template fit functions, which are used for a fit to pseudo-data. The offsets in the top quark mass resulting from the fits based on the various theoretical descriptions are determined.

Top quark mass studies with $t\bar{t}j$ at the LHC

A precise measurement of the top quark mass, a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model, is among the most important goals of top quark studies at the Large Hadron Collider. Apart from the standard methods, numerous new observables and reconstruction techniques are employed to improve the overall precision and to provide different sensitivities to various systematic uncertainties. Recently, the normalised inverse invariant mass distribution of the $t\bar{t}$ system and the leading extra jet not coming from the top quark decays has been proposed for the $pp \to t\bar{t}j$ production process, denoted as ${\cal R}(m_t^{pole},ρ_s)$. In this paper, a thorough study of different theoretical predictions for this observable, however, with top quark decays included, is carried out. We focus on fixed order NLO QCD calculations for the di-lepton top quark decay channel at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. First, the impact on the extraction of $m_t$ is investigated and afterwards the associated uncertainties are quantified. In one approach we include all interferences, off-shell effects and non-resonant backgrounds. This is contrasted with a different approach with top quark decays in the narrow width approximation. In the latter case, two cases are employed: NLO QCD corrections to the $pp\to t\bar{t}j$ production process with leading order decays and the more sophisticated case with QCD corrections and jet radiation present also in top quark decays. The top quark mass sensitivity of ${\cal R}(m_t^{pole},ρ_s)$ is investigated and compared to other observables: the invariant mass of the top anti-top pair, the minimal invariant mass of the $b$-jet and a charged lepton as well as the total transverse momentum of the $t\bar{t}j$ system.

Off-shell $t\bar{t}j$ production and top quark mass studies at the LHC

Precision studies of the properties of the top quark represent a cornerstone of the LHC physics program. In this contribution we focus on the production of $t\bar{t}$ pairs in association with one hard jet and in particular on its connection with precision measurements of the top quark mass at the LHC. We report a summary of a full calculation of the process $pp \to e^+ν_eμ^-\barν_μb \bar{b}j$ at NLO QCD accuracy, which describes $t\bar{t}j$ production with leptonic decays beyond the Narrow Width Approximation (NWA), and discuss the impact of the off-shell effects through comparisons with NWA. Finally we explore the sensitivity of $t\bar{t}j$ in the context of top-quark mass extraction with the template method, considering two benchmark observables as case studies.

Physics at a 100 TeV pp collider: Standard Model processes

This report summarises the properties of Standard Model processes at the 100 TeV pp collider. We document the production rates and typical distributions for a number of benchmark Standard Model processes, and discuss new dynamical phenomena arising at the highest energies available at this collider. We discuss the intrinsic physics interest in the measurement of these Standard Model processes, as well as their role as backgrounds for New Physics searches.

High precision fundamental constants at the TeV scale

This report summarizes the proceedings of the 2014 Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics (MITP) scientific program on "High precision fundamental constants at the TeV scale". The two outstanding parameters in the Standard Model dealt with during the MITP scientific program are the strong coupling constant $α_s$ and the top-quark mass $m_t$. Lacking knowledge on the value of those fundamental constants is often the limiting factor in the accuracy of theoretical predictions. The current status on $α_s$ and $m_t$ has been reviewed and directions for future research have been identified.

Adiabatic pumping in the quasi-one-dimensional triangle lattice

We analyze the properties of the quasi-one-dimensional triangle lattice emphasizing the occurrence of flat bands and band touching via the tuning of the lattice hopping parameters and on-site energies. The spectral properties of the infinite system will be compared with the transmission through a finite piece of the lattice with attached semi-infinite leads. Furthermore, we investigate the adiabatic pumping properties of such a system: depending on the transmission through the lattice, this results in nonzero integer charge transfers or transfers that increase linearly with the lattice size.

High dispersive and monolithic 100% efficiency grisms

We present a type of grism, a series combination of transmission grating and prism, in which we reduce the number of diffraction orders and achieve a configuration with very high angular dispersion. The grism can be fabricated from a single dielectric material and requires no metallic or dielectric film layers for high transmission diffraction efficiency. One can reach 100% in the -1st transmission diffraction order and the equal damage threshold as the dielectric bulk material. We realized such an element in fused silica with an efficiency of more then 99%. The bevel backside reflection is reduced by a statistical antireflective structure, so we measured an efficiency of the entire grism of 95% at a single wavelength.

The SM and NLO Multileg and SM MC Working Groups: Summary Report

The 2011 Les Houches workshop was the first to confront LHC data. In the two years since the previous workshop there have been significant advances in both soft and hard QCD, particularly in the areas of multi-leg NLO calculations, the inclusion of those NLO calculations into parton shower Monte Carlos, and the tuning of the non-perturbative parameters of those Monte Carlos. These proceedings describe the theoretical advances that have taken place, the impact of the early LHC data, and the areas for future development.

Electroweak corrections to hadronic production of W bosons at large transverse momenta

To match the precision of present and future measurements of W-boson production at hadron colliders electroweak radiative corrections must be included in the theory predictions. In this paper we consider their effect on the transverse momentum (p_T) distribution of W bosons, with emphasis on large p_T. We evaluate the full electroweak O(alpha) corrections to the processes pp -> W+jet and p\bar p -> W+jet including virtual and real photonic contributions. We present the explicit expressions in analytical form for the virtual corrections and provide results for the real corrections, discussing in detail the treatment of soft and collinear singularities. We also provide compact approximate expressions which are valid in the high-energy region, where the electroweak corrections are strongly enhanced by logarithms of \hat{s}/M_W^2. These expressions describe the complete asymptotic behaviour at one loop as well as the leading and next-to-leading logarithms at two loops. Numerical results are presented for proton-proton collisions at 14 TeV and proton-antiproton collisions at 2 TeV. The corrections are negative and their size increases with p_T. At the LHC, where transverse momenta of 2 TeV or more can be reached, the one- and two-loop corrections amount up to -40% and +10%, respectively, and will be important for a precise analysis of W production. At the Tevatron, transverse momenta up to 300 GeV are within reach. In this case the electroweak corrections amount up to -10% and are thus larger than the expected statistical error.

These expressions include quadratic and single logarithms at one loop as well as quartic and triple logarithms at two loops. Numerical results are presented for proton-proton collisions at 14 TeV. The corrections are negative and their size increases with p_T. At the LHC, where transverse momenta of 2 TeV or more can be reached, the one- and two-loop corrections amount up to -40% and +10%, respectively.

Electroweak corrections to hadronic photon production at large transverse momenta

We study the impact of electroweak radiative corrections on direct production of photons with high transverse momenta at hadron colliders. Analytic results for the weak one-loop corrections to the parton scattering reaction $\bar q q \to γg$ and its crossed variants are presented. For the high-energy region, where the corrections are strongly enhanced by logarithms of $\hat s/M_W^2$, we derive simple asymptotic expressions which approximate the exact one-loop results with high precision. The dominant two-loop electroweak contributions are also calculated. Numerical results are presented for the LHC and the Tevatron. The corrections are negative and their size increases with transverse momentum. For the LHC, where transverse momenta of 2 TeV or more can be reached, the size of the one- and two-loop effects amounts up to -17% and +3%, respectively. At the Tevatron, with transverse momenta up to 400 GeV, the one-loop corrections do not exceed -4% and the two-loop effects are negligible. Finally we compare the cross sections for hadronic production of photons and Z bosons and find that the electroweak corrections have an important impact on their ratio.

One-loop weak corrections to hadronic production of Z bosons at large transverse momenta

To match the precision of present and future measurements of Z-boson production at hadron colliders, electroweak radiative corrections must be included in the theory predictions. In this paper we consider their effect on the transverse momentum ($p_T$) distribution of Z bosons, with emphasis on large $p_T$. We evaluate, analytically and numerically, the full one-loop corrections for the parton scattering reaction $q\bar q \to Z g$ and its crossed variants. In addition we derive compact approximate expressions which are valid in the high-energy region, where the weak corrections are strongly enhanced by logarithms of $\hat s/M_W^2$. These expressions include quadratic and single logarithms as well as those terms that are not logarithmically enhanced. This approximation, which confirms and extends earlier results obtained to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, permits to reproduce the exact one-loop corrections with high precision. Numerical results are presented for proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions. The corrections are negative and their size increases with $p_T$. For the Tevatron they amount up to -7% at 300 GeV. For the LHC, where transverse momenta of 2 TeV or more can be reached, corrections up to -40% are observed. We also include the dominant two-loop effects of up to 8% in our final LHC predictions.

Logarithmic electroweak corrections to hadronic Z+1 jet production at large transverse momentum

We consider hadronic production of a Z boson in association with a jet and study one- and two-loop electroweak logarithmic corrections in the region of high Z-boson transverse momentum, p_T >> M_Z, including leading and next-to-leading logarithms. Numerical results for the LHC and Tevatron colliders are presented. At the LHC these corrections amount to tens of per cent and will be important for interpretation of the measurements.

The Beam Halo Experiment at the LEDA Facility

Due to the potentially adverse effects of the generation of halo particles in intense proton beams, it is imperative to have a clear understanding of the mechanisms that can lead to halo formation for current and proposed high- intensity linacs. To this end a theoretical model has been developed, which indicates that protons under the combined influence of strong space charge forces and periodic focussing in a linear transport channel can be kicked into halo orbits. However, no experimental measurements of beam halo in proton beams have yet been carried out. In this paper we report the progress of an effort to carry out an experiment to measure beam-halo using the existing high- intensity proton beam of the LEDA facility. A linear transport channel has been assembled with the appropriate diagnostics for measuring the expected small beam component in the beam halo as a function of beam parameters. The experiment is based on the use of an array of high-dynamic-range wire and beam scrapers to determine the halo and core profiles along the transport channel. Details of the experimental design, the expected halo measurement properties will be presented.
