Dispersive Corrections to the Born Approximation in Elastic Electron-Nucleus Scattering in the Intermediate Energy Regime

Measurements of elastic electron scattering data within the past decade have highlighted two-photon exchange contributions as a necessary ingredient in theoretical calculations to precisely evaluate hydrogen elastic scattering cross sections. This correction can modify the cross section at the few percent level. In contrast, dispersive effects can cause significantly larger changes from the Born approximation. The purpose of this experiment is to extract the carbon-12 elastic cross section around the first diffraction minimum, where the Born term contributions to the cross section are small to maximize the sensitivity to dispersive effects. The analysis uses the LEDEX data from the high resolution Jefferson Lab Hall A spectrometers to extract the cross sections near the first diffraction minimum of 12C at beam energies of 362 MeV and 685 MeV. The results are in very good agreement with previous world data, although with less precision. The average deviation from a static nuclear charge distribution expected from linear and quadratic fits indicate a 30.6% contribution of dispersive effects to the cross section at 1 GeV. The magnitude of the dispersive effects near the first diffraction minimum of 12C has been confirmed to be large with a strong energy dependence and could account for a large fraction of the magnitude for the observed quenching of the longitudinal nuclear response. These effects could also be important for nuclei radii extracted from parity-violating asymmetries measured near a diffraction minimum.

Knockout of proton-neutron pairs from $^{16}$O with electromagnetic probes

After recent improvements to the Pavia model of two-nucleon knockout from $^{16}$O with electromagnetic probes the calculated cross sections are compared to experimental data from such reactions. Comparison with data from a measurement of the $^{16}$O(e,e$'$pn) reaction show much better agreement between experiment and theory than was previously observed. In a comparison with recent data from a measurement of the $^{16}$O($γ$,pn) reaction the model over-predicts the measured cross section at low missing momentum.

On the ill-posed character of the Lorentz integral transform

An exact inversion formula for the Lorentz integral transform (LIT) is provided together with the spectrum of the LIT kernel. The exponential increase of the inverse Fourier transform of the LIT kernel entering the inversion formula explains the ill-posed character of the LIT approach. Also the continuous spectrum of the LIT kernel, which approaches zero points necessarily to the same defect. A possible cure is discussed and numerically illustrated.

Recent Advances in the Description of Electromagnetic Two-Nucleon Knockout Reactions

Recent advances in the description of electromagnetic two-nucleon knockout reactions are reviewed. The sensitivity to different types of correlations and to their treatment in the nuclear wave functions, the effects of final-state interactions and the role of center-of-mass effects in connection with the problem of the lack of orthogonality between initial bound states and final scattering states obtained by the use of an energy-dependent optical-model potential are discussed. Results are presented for proton-proton and proton-neutron knockout off 16O also in comparison with the available data.

On the treatment of the $Δ$-contribution in electromagnetic $pp$-knockout reactions

The treatment of the $Δ$-current and its contribution in the exclusive $^{16}$O$(e,e'pp)^{14}$C and $^{16}$O$(γ,pp)^{14}$C knockout reactions are investigated in combination with the effects of correlations. Different parametrizations of the effective $Δ$-current and different treatments of correlations in the two-nucleon overlap function are considered. The results are presented and discussed for a suitable choice of kinematics. It is found that the investigation of different mutually supplementing kinematics is necessary to resolve the uncertainties in the theoretical ingredients and extract clear and unambiguous information on correlations.

Spin asymmetry and GDH sum rule for real and virtual photons for the deuteron

An explicit evaluation of the spin asymmetry of the deuteron and the associated GDH sum rule is presented which includes disintegration, single and double pion and eta production. For the GDH integral a large cancellation is found between the disintegration channel and the meson production channels. Furthermore, first results for the contribution of the disintegration channel to the generalized GDH integral at constant four-momentum transfer reveal a dominance of the isovector M1 transition to the $^1$S$_0$-state near threshold resulting in a negative contribution with a minimum around $Q^2\approx 0.2$ fm$^{-2}$ which is driven by the nucleon anomalous isovector magnetic moment.

Meson retardation in deuteron electrodisintegration

The effect of meson retardation in $NN$-interaction and exchange currents on deuteron electrodisintegration is studied in a coupled channel approach including $NN$-, $N Δ$- and $πd$-channels. It is shown that the influence of retardation depends on the energy regime: Whereas below $π$-threshold calculations with static and retarded operators yield almost identical results, they differ significantly in the $Δ$-region. Especially, the longitudinal and the longitudinal-transverse interference structure functions are strongly affected.

The NN-final-state-interaction in two-nucleon-knockout reactions

The influence of the mutual interaction between the two outgoing nucleons (NN-FSI) in electro- and photoinduced two-nucleon knockout from $^{16}O$ has been investigated perturbatively. It turns out that the effect of NN-FSI depends on the kinematics and on the type of reaction considered. In the kinematics studied so far, the effect is larger in pp- than in pn-knockout and in electron induced than in photoinduced reactions.

NN correlations and final-state interactions in (e,e'NN) reactions

After a brief overview of relevant studies on one-nucleon knockout showing the importance of quantitatively understanding the origin of the quenched spectroscopic factors extracted from data, attention is focussed on two-nucleon emission as a suitable tool to investigate nucleon-nucleon correlations inside complex nuclei. In particular, direct (e,e$'$pp) and (e,e$'$pn) reactions are discussed, and the role of final-state interactions is studied. The influence of the mutual interaction between the two outgoing nucleons is shown to depend on the kinematics and on the type of the considered reaction.

NN final-state interaction in two-nucleon knockout from $^{16}O$

The influence of the mutual interaction between the two outgoing nucleons (NN-FSI) in electro- and photoinduced two-nucleon knockout from $^{16}O$ has been investigated perturbatively. It turns out that the effect of NN-FSI depends on the kinematics and on the type of reaction considered. The effect is generally larger in pp- than in pn-knockout and in electron induced than in photoinduced reactions. In superparallel kinematics NN-FSI leads in the $(e,e'pp)$ channel to a strong increase of the cross section, that is mainly due to a strong enhancement of the $Δ$-current contribution. In pn-emission, however, this effect is partially cancelled by a destructive interference with the seagull current. For photoreactions NN-FSI is considerably reduced in superparallel kinematics and can be practically negligible in specific kinematics.

Final state interaction in spin asymmetry and GDH sum rule for incoherent pion production on the deuteron

The contribution of incoherent single pion photoproduction to the spin response of the deuteron, i.e., the asymmetry of the total photoabsorption cross section with respect to parallel and antiparallel spins of photon and deuteron, is calculated over the region of the $Δ$-resonance with inclusion of final state $NN$- and $πN$-rescattering. Sizeable effects, mainly from $NN$-rescattering, are found leading to an appreciable reduction of the spin asymmetry. Furthermore, the contribution to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral is explicitly evaluated by integration up to a photon energy of 550 MeV. Final state interaction reduces the value of the integral to about half of the value obtained for the pure impulse approximation.

On the NN-final-state-interaction in the $^{16}{O}(e,e' pp)$ reaction

The influence of the mutual interaction between the two outgoing nucleons (NN-FSI) in the $^{16}{O}(e,e' pp)$ reaction has been investigated. Results for various kinematics are discussed. In general, the effect of NN-FSI depends on kinematics and the chosen final state in the excitation spectrum of $^{14}{C}$.

The Two-Nucleon System beyond the Pion Threshold

A model is developed for the hadronic and electromagnetic interaction in the two-nucleon system above pion threshold in the framework of meson, nucleon and $Δ$ degrees of freedom. It is based on time-ordered perturbation theory and includes full meson retardation in potentials and exchange currents as well as loop contributions to the nucleonic one-body current. Results for some selected processes are discussed.

Present status of electromagnetic reactions on the deuteron above pion threshold

The present status of the theoretical description of electromagnetic reactions on the deuteron above pion threshold is reviewed. Three major topics are considered: (i) retardation effects in $π$-meson exchange contributions to $NN$-interaction and meson exchange currents in deuteron photodisintegration above $π$-threshold in the $Δ$-resonance region, (ii) off-shell effects in the one-body current treated in a simple pion cloud model in deuteron photodisintegration in and above the $Δ$-resonance region, and (iii) final state interaction effects in photoproduction of $π$ and $η$ mesons on the deuteron.

Influence of final state interaction on incoherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron in the region of the Delta-resonance

The influence of final state $NN$- and pi N-rescattering in incoherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron has been investigated. For the elementary photoproduction operator an effective Lagrangian model is used which describes well the elementary reaction. The interactions in the final two-body subsystems are taken in separable form. While NN-rescattering shows quite a significant effect, particularly strong for neutral pion production, pi N-rescattering is almost negligible. Inclusion of such effects leads to an improved and quite satisfactory agreement with experiment.

Meson retardation in deuteron photodisintegration above pi-threshold

Photodisintegration of the deuteron above pi-threshold is studied in a coupled channel approach including N Delta- and pi d-channels with pion retardation in potentials and exchange currents. A much improved description of total and differential cross sections in the energy region between pi-threshold and 400-450 MeV is achieved.
