A Group Theoretical Identification of Integrable Cases of the Liénard Type Equation $\ddot{x}+f(x)\dot{x}+g(x) = 0$ : Part I: Equations having Non-maximal Number of Lie point Symmetries

We carry out a detailed Lie point symmetry group classification of the Liénard type equation, $\ddot{x}+f(x)\dot{x}+g(x) = 0$, where $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ are arbitrary smooth functions of $x$. We divide our analysis into two parts. In the present first part we isolate equations that admit lesser parameter Lie point symmetries, namely, one, two and three parameter symmetries, and in the second part we identify equations that admit maximal (eight) parameter Lie-point symmetries. In the former case the invariant equations form a family of integrable equations and in the latter case they form a class of linearizable equations (under point transformations). Further, we prove the integrability of all of the equations obtained in the present paper through equivalence transformations either by providing the general solution or by constructing time independent Hamiltonians. Several of these equations are being identified for the first time from the group theoretical analysis.

A Group Theoretical Identification of Integrable Equations in the Liénard Type Equation $\ddot{x}+f(x)\dot{x}+g(x) = 0$ : Part II: Equations having Maximal Lie Point Symmetries

In this second of the set of two papers on Lie symmetry analysis of a class of Liénard type equation of the form $\ddot {x} + f(x)\dot {x} + g(x)= 0$, where over dot denotes differentiation with respect to time and $f(x)$ and $g(x)$ are smooth functions of their variables, we isolate the equations which possess maximal Lie point symmetries. It is well known that any second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation which admits eight parameter Lie point symmetries is linearizable to free particle equation through point transformation. As a consequence all the identified equations turn out to be linearizable. We also show that one can get maximal Lie point symmetries for the above Liénard equation only when $f_{xx} =0$ (subscript denotes differentiation). In addition, we discuss the linearising transformations and solutions for all the nonlinear equations identified in this paper.

On the complete integrability and linearization of nonlinear ordinary differential equations - Part V: Linearization of coupled second order equations

Linearization of coupled second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations (SNODEs) is one of the open and challenging problems in the theory of differential equations. In this paper we describe a simple and straightforward method to derive linearizing transformations for a class of two coupled SNODEs. Our procedure gives several new types of linearizing transformations of both invertible and non-invertible kinds. In both the cases we provide algorithms to derive the general solution of the given SNODE. We illustrate the theory with potentially important examples.

Dynamics of a Completely Integrable $N$-Coupled Liénard Type Nonlinear Oscillator

We present a system of $N$-coupled Liénard type nonlinear oscillators which is completely integrable and possesses explicit $N$ time-independent and $N$ time-dependent integrals. In a special case, it becomes maximally superintegrable and admits $(2N-1)$ time-independent integrals. The results are illustrated for the N=2 and arbitrary number cases. General explicit periodic (with frequency independent of amplitude) and quasiperiodic solutions as well as decaying type/frontlike solutions are presented, depending on the signs and magnitudes of the system parameters. Though the system is of a nonlinear damped type, our investigations show that it possesses a Hamiltonian structure and that under a contact transformation it is transformable to a system of uncoupled harmonic oscillators.

On the complete integrability and linearization of nonlinear ordinary differential equations - Part III: Coupled first order equations

Continuing our study on the complete integrability of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, in this paper we consider the integrability of a system of coupled first order nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of both autonomous and non-autonomous types. For this purpose, we modify the original Prelle-Singer procedure so as to apply it to both autonomous and non-autonomous systems of coupled first order ODEs. We briefly explain the method of finding integrals of motion (time independent as well as time dependent integrals) for two and three coupled first order ODEs by extending the Prelle-Singer(PS) method. From this we try to answer some of the open questions in the original PS method. We also identify integrable cases for the two dimensional Lotka-Volterra system and three-dimensional R$\ddot{o}$ssler system as well as other examples including non-autonomous systems in a straightforward way using this procedure. Finally, we develop a linearization procedure for coupled first order ODEs.

On the complete integrability and linearization of nonlinear ordinary differential equations - Part IV: Coupled second order equations

Coupled second order nonlinear differential equations are of fundamental importance in dynamics. In this part of our study on the integrability and linearization of nonlinear ordinary differential equations we focus our attention on the method of deriving general solution of two coupled second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations through the extended Prelle-Singer procedure. We describe a procedure to obtain integrating factors and required number of integrals of motion so that the general solution follows straightforwardly from these integrals. Our method tackles both isotropic and non-isotropic cases in a systematic way. In addition to the above, we introduce a new method of transforming coupled second order nonlinear ODEs into uncoupled ones. We illustrate the theory with potentially important examples.

On the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian description of the damped linear harmonic oscillator

Using the modified Prelle- Singer approach, we point out that explicit time independent first integrals can be identified for the damped linear harmonic oscillator in different parameter regimes. Using these constants of motion, an appropriate Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism is developed and the resultant canonical equations are shown to lead to the standard dynamical description. Suitable canonical transformations to standard Hamiltonian forms are also obtained. It is also shown that a possible quantum mechanical description can be developed either in the coordinate or momentum representations using the Hamiltonian forms.

A nonlocal connection between certain linear and nonlinear ordinary differential equations/oscillators

We explore a nonlocal connection between certain linear and nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs), representing physically important oscillator systems, and identify a class of integrable nonlinear ODEs of any order. We also devise a method to derive explicit general solutions of the nonlinear ODEs. Interestingly, many well known integrable models can be accommodated into our scheme and our procedure thereby provides further understanding of these models.

A Simple and Unified Approach to Identify Integrable Nonlinear Oscillators and Systems

In this paper, we consider a generalized second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation of the form $\ddot{x}+(k_1x^q+k_2)\dot{x}+k_3x^{2q+1}+k_4x^{q+1}+λ_1x=0$, where $k_i$'s, $i=1,2,3,4$, $λ_1$ and $q$ are arbitrary parameters, which includes several physically important nonlinear oscillators such as the simple harmonic oscillator, anharmonic oscillator, force-free Helmholtz oscillator, force-free Duffing and Duffing-van der Pol oscillators, modified Emden type equation and its hierarchy, generalized Duffing-van der Pol oscillator equation hierarchy and so on and investigate the integrability properties of this rather general equation. We identify several new integrable cases for arbitrary value of the exponent $q, q\in R$. The $q=1$ and $q=2$ cases are analyzed in detail and the results are generalized to arbitrary $q$. Our results show that many classical integrable nonlinear oscillators can be derived as sub-cases of our results and significantly enlarge the list of integrable equations that exist in the contemporary literature. To explore the above underlying results we use the recently introduced generalized extended Prelle-Singer procedure applicable to second order ODEs. As an added advantage of the method we not only identify integrable regimes but also construct integrating factors, integrals of motion and general solutions for the integrable cases, wherever possible, and bring out the mathematical structures associated with each of the integrable cases.

A note on the Painleve analysis of a (2+1) dimensional Camassa-Holm equation

We investigate the Painleve analysis for a (2+1) dimensional Camassa-Holm equation. Our results show that it admits only weak Painleve expansions. This then confirms the limitations of the Painleve test as a test for complete integrability when applied to non-semilinear partial differential equations.

Equivalence transformations and differential invariants of a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation

By using the Lie's invariance infinitesimal criterion we obtain the continuous equivalence transformations of a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with variable coefficients. Starting from the equivalence generators we construct the differential invariants of order one. We apply these latter ones to find the most general subclass of variable coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equations which can be mapped, by means of an equivalence transformation, to the well known cubic Schrödinger equation. We also provide the explicit form of the transformation.

A unification in the theory of linearization of second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations

In this letter, we introduce a new generalized linearizing transformation (GLT) for second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations (SNODEs). The well known invertible point (IPT) and non-point transformations (NPT) can be derived as sub-cases of the GLT. A wider class of nonlinear ODEs that cannot be linearized through NPT and IPT can be linearized by this GLT. We also illustrate how to construct GLTs and to identify the form of the linearizable equations and propose a procedure to derive the general solution from this GLT for the SNODEs. We demonstrate the theory with two examples which are of contemporary interest.

On the complete integrability and linearization of nonlinear ordinary differential equations - Part II: Third order equations

We introduce a method for finding general solutions of third-order nonlinear differential equations by extending the modified Prelle-Singer method. We describe a procedure to deduce all the integrals of motion associated with the given equation so that the general solution follows straightforwardly from these integrals. The method is illustrated with several examples. Further, we propose a powerful method of identifying linearizing transformations. The proposed method not only unifies all the known linearizing transformations systematically but also introduces a new and generalized linearizing transformation (GLT). In addition to the above, we provide an algorithm to invert the nonlocal linearizing transformation. Through this procedure the general solution for the original nonlinear equation can be obtained from the solution of the linear ordinary differential equation.

On the complete integrability and linearization of certain second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations

A method of finding general solutions of second-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations by extending the Prelle-Singer (PS) method is briefly discussed. We explore integrating factors, integrals of motion and the general solution associated with several dynamical systems discussed in the current literature by employing our modifications and extensions of the PS method. In addition to the above we introduce a novel way of deriving linearizing transformations from the first integrals to linearize the second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations to free particle equation. We illustrate the theory with several potentially important examples and show that our procedure is widely applicable.

An unusual Liénard type nonlinear oscillator with properties of a linear harmonic oscillator

A Liénard type nonlinear oscillator of the form $\ddot{x}+kx\dot{x}+\frac{k^2}{9}x^3+λ_1 x=0$, which may also be considered as a generalized Emden type equation, is shown to possess unusual nonlinear dynamical properties. It is shown to admit explicit nonisolated periodic orbits of conservative Hamiltonian type for $λ_1>0$. These periodic orbits exhibit the unexpected property that the frequency of oscillations is completely independent of amplitude and continues to remain as that of the linear harmonic oscillator. This is completely contrary to the standard characteristic property of nonlinear oscillators. Interestingly, the system though appears deceptively a dissipative type for $λ_1\leq0$ does admit a conserved Hamiltonian description, where the characteristic decay time is also independent of the amplitude. The results also show that the criterion for conservative Hamiltonian system in terms of divergence of flow function needs to be generalized.

On the Integrability, BÄcklund Transformation and Symmetry Aspects of a Generalized Fisher Type Nonlinear Reaction-Diffusion Equation

The dynamics of nonlinear reaction-diffusion systems is dominated by the onset of patterns and Fisher equation is considered to be a prototype of such diffusive equations. Here we investigate the integrability properties of a generalized Fisher equation in both (1+1) and (2+1) dimensions. A Painlevé singularity structure analysis singles out a special case ($m=2$) as integrable. More interestingly, a Bäcklund transformation is shown to give rise to a linearizing transformation for the integrable case. A Lie symmetry analysis again separates out the same $m=2$ case as the integrable one and hence we report several physically interesting solutions via similarity reductions. Thus we give a group theoretical interpretation for the system under study. Explicit and numerical solutions for specific cases of nonintegrable systems are also given. In particular, the system is found to exhibit different types of travelling wave solutions and patterns, static structures and localized structures. Besides the Lie symmetry analysis, nonclassical and generalized conditional symmetry analysis are also carried out.

New aspects of integrability of force-free Duffing-van der Pol oscillator and related nonlinear systems

In this letter we show that the force-free Duffing-van der Pol oscillator is completely integrable for a specific parametric choice. We derive a general solution for this parametric choice. Further, we describe a procedure to construct the transformation which removes the time dependent part from the first integral and provide the general solution by quadrature. The procedure is shown to have a wider applicability through additional examples. We also show that through our method one can deduce linearizing transformations in a simple and straightforward way and illustrate it with a specific example.
