Volume Collapse Without a Structural Transition in Shock-Compressed FeO

We report x-ray diffraction and emission spectroscopy of FeO under laser-driven shock compression between 31-199 GPa. FeO retains the B1 (rocksalt) structure along the Hugoniot to the melt boundary at 191 GPa. While the phase and volume are broadly consistent with results from static compression, we observe an anomalous 7-10% volume collapse around 60 GPa absent in static experiments. We identify this as an isostructural high-spin to low-spin metallic transition in FeO. The low-spin state is directly evidenced by x-ray emission spectroscopy at 180 GPa.

Anchoring of Turbulent Premixed Hydrogen/Air Flames at Externally Heated Walls

A joint experimental and numerical investigation of turbulent flame front anchoring at externally heated walls is presented. The phenomenon is examined for lean hydrogen/air mixtures in a novel burner design, which comprises a cylindrical burning chamber converging into a glass pipe as well as a wall heating assembly at their intersection. The transparent part allows for optical OH* chemiluminescence measurements serving as a basis for numerical validation. For a comprehensive numerical evaluation the effect of heat loss on different hydrogen/air chemical reaction mechanisms is reviewed in a preparatory one-dimensional flame study. The subsequent numerical investigation focuses on the application of the Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) as a turbulence-chemistry interaction model in the realm of wall anchoring turbulent flames. All simulations are based on the Reynolds time-averaged formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations and feature axisymmetric domains. The influence of different two-equation turbulence models and EDC modeling constants are discussed. Since wall heat transfer is responsible for ignition as well as quenching of the flame front, a special focus is put on boundary layer resolving near-wall treatment. A qualitative comparison between simulations and experiment is performed for multiple operating conditions. These are selected to display the influence of equivalence ratio, bulk Reynolds number and unburnt mixture temperature. While the choice of RANS-based turbulence model has a distinguishable impact, EDC modeling coefficients exhibit a more significant influence on flame shape and length. It is only surpassed by the impact of correct diffusion treatment on reacting lean hydrogen/air mixtures. To depict this behavior as accurately as possible, full multicomponent diffusion treatment using the Maxwell-Stefan equation is applied.

Power-law random banded matrices and ultrametric matrices: eigenvector distribution in the intermediate regime

The power-law random banded matrices and the ultrametric random matrices are investigated numerically in the regime where eigenstates are extended but all integer matrix moments remain finite in the limit of large matrix dimensions. Though in this case standard analytical tools are inapplicable, we found that in all considered cases eigenvector distributions are extremely well described by the generalised hyperbolic distribution which differs considerably from the usual Porter-Thomas distribution but shares with it certain universal properties.

Eigenfunction distribution for the Rosenzweig-Porter model

The statistical distribution of eigenfunctions for the Rosenzweig-Porter model is derived for the region where eigenfunctions have fractal behaviour. The result is based on simple physical ideas and leads to transparent explicit formulas which agree very well with numerical calculations. It constitutes a rare case where a non-trivial eigenfunction distribution is obtained in a closed form.

A microwave realization of the Gaussian symplectic ensemble

Following an idea by Joyner et al. [Europhys. Lett. 107, 50004 (2014)] a microwave graph with an antiunitary symmetry T obeying T^2=-1 is realized. The Kramers doublets expected for such systems are clearly identified and can be lifted by a perturbation which breaks the antiunitary symmetry. The observed spectral level spacings distribution of the Kramers doublets is in agreement with the predictions from the Gaussian symplectic ensemble expected for chaotic systems with such a symmetry.

Unidirectional emission from circular dielectric microresonators with a point scatterer

Circular microresonators are micron sized dielectric disks embedded in material of lower refractive index. They possess modes of extremely high Q-factors (low lasing thresholds) which makes them ideal candidates for the realization of miniature laser sources. They have, however, the disadvantage of isotropic light emission caused by the rotational symmetry of the system. In order to obtain high directivity of the emission while retaining high Q-factors, we consider a microdisk with a pointlike scatterer placed off-center inside of the disk. We calculate the resulting resonant modes and show that some of them possess both of the desired characteristics. The emission is predominantly in the direction opposite to the scatterer. We show that classical ray optics is a useful guide to optimizing the design parameters of this system. We further find that exceptional points in the resonance spectrum influence how complex resonance wavenumbers change if system parameters are varied.

Internal and External Resonances of Dielectric Disks

Circular microresonators (microdisks) are micron sized dielectric disks embedded in a material of lower refractive index. They possess modes with complex eigenvalues (resonances) which are solutions of analytically given transcendental equations. The behavior of such eigenvalues in the small opening limit, i.e. when the refractive index of the cavity goes to infinity, is analysed. This analysis allows one to clearly distinguish between internal (Feshbach) and external (shape) resonant modes for both TM and TE polarizations. This is especially important for TE polarization for which internal and external resonances can be found in the same region of the complex wavenumber plane. It is also shown that for both polarizations, the internal as well as external resonances can be classified by well defined azimuthal and radial modal indices.

On the resonance eigenstates of an open quantum baker map

We study the resonance eigenstates of a particular quantization of the open baker map. For any admissible value of Planck's constant, the corresponding quantum map is a subunitary matrix, and the nonzero component of its spectrum is contained inside an annulus in the complex plane, $|z_{min}|\leq |z|\leq |z_{max}|$. We consider semiclassical sequences of eigenstates, such that the moduli of their eigenvalues converge to a fixed radius $r$. We prove that, if the moduli converge to $r=|z_{max}|$, then the sequence of eigenstates converges to a fixed phase space measure $ρ_{max}$. The same holds for sequences with eigenvalue moduli converging to $|z_{min}|$, with a different limit measure $ρ_{min}$. Both these limiting measures are supported on fractal sets, which are trapped sets of the classical dynamics. For a general radius $|z_{min}|< r < |z_{max}|$, we identify families of eigenstates with precise self-similar properties.

Directional Emission from an Optical Microdisk Resonator with a Point Scatterer

We present a new design of dielectric microcavities supporting modes with large quality factors and highly directional light emission. The key idea is to place a point scatterer inside a dielectric circular microdisk. We show that, depending on the position and strength of the scatterer, this leads to strongly directional modes in various frequency regions while preserving the high Q-factors reminiscent of the whispering gallery modes of the microdisk without scatterer. The design is very appealing due to its simplicity, promising a cleaner experimental realisation than previously studied microcavity designs on the one hand and analytic tractability based on Green's function techniques and self-adjoint extension theory on the other.

Periodic orbit bifurcations and scattering time delay fluctuations

We study fluctuations of the Wigner time delay for open (scattering) systems which exhibit mixed dynamics in the classical limit. It is shown that in the semiclassical limit the time delay fluctuations have a distribution that differs markedly from those which describe fully chaotic (or strongly disordered) systems: their moments have a power law dependence on a semiclassical parameter, with exponents that are rational fractions. These exponents are obtained from bifurcating periodic orbits trapped in the system. They are universal in situations where sufficiently long orbits contribute. We illustrate the influence of bifurcations on the time delay numerically using an open quantum map.

Semiclassical structure of chaotic resonance eigenfunctions

We study the resonance (or Gamow) eigenstates of open chaotic systems in the semiclassical limit, distinguishing between left and right eigenstates of the non-unitary quantum propagator, and also between short-lived and long-lived states. The long-lived left (right) eigenstates are shown to concentrate as $\hbar\to 0$ on the forward (backward) trapped set of the classical dynamics. The limit of a sequence of eigenstates $\{ψ(\hbar)\}_{\hbar\to 0}$ is found to exhibit a remarkably rich structure in phase space that depends on the corresponding limiting decay rate. These results are illustrated for the open baker map, for which the probability density in position space is observed to have self-similarity properties.

Universal quantum signature of mixed dynamics in antidot lattices

We investigate phase coherent ballistic transport through antidot lattices in the generic case where the classical phase space has both regular and chaotic components. It is shown that the conductivity fluctuations have a non-Gaussian distribution, and that their moments have a power-law dependence on a semiclassical parameter, with fractional exponents. These exponents are obtained from bifurcating periodic orbits in the semiclassical approximation. They are universal in situations where sufficiently long orbits contribute.

Wavefunction localization and its semiclassical description in a 3-dimensional system with mixed classical dynamics

We discuss the localization of wavefunctions along planes containing the shortest periodic orbits in a three-dimensional billiard system with axial symmetry. This model mimicks the self-consistent mean field of a heavy nucleus at deformations that occur characteristically during the fission process [1,2]. Many actinide nuclei become unstable against left-right asymmetric deformations, which results in asymmetric fragment mass distributions. Recently we have shown [3,4] that the onset of this asymmetry can be explained in the semiclassical periodic orbit theory by a few short periodic orbits lying in planes perpendicular to the symmetry axis. Presently we show that these orbits are surrounded by small islands of stability in an otherwise chaotic phase space, and that the wavefunctions of the diabatic quantum states that are most sensitive to the left-right asymmetry have their extrema in the same planes. An EBK quantization of the classical motion near these planes reproduces the exact eigenenergies of the diabatic quantum states surprisingly well.

Universality in quantum parametric correlations

We investigate the universality of correlation functions of chaotic and disordered quantum systems as an external parameter is varied. A new, general scaling procedure is introduced which makes the theory invariant under reparametrizations. Under certain general conditions we show that this procedure is unique. The approach is illustrated with the particular case of the distribution of eigenvalue curvatures. We also derive a semiclassical formula for the non-universal scaling factor, and give an explicit expression valid for arbitrary deformations of a billiard system.

Semiclassical Interpretation of the Mass Asymmetry in Nuclear Fission

We give a semiclassical interpretation of the mass asymmetry in the fission of heavy nuclei. Using only a few classical periodic orbits and a cavity model for the nuclear mean field, we reproduce the onset of left-right asymmetric shapes at the fission isomer minimum and the correct topology of the deformation energy surface in the region of the outer fission barrier. We point at the correspondence of the single-particle quantum states responsible for the asymmetry with the leading classical orbits, both lying in similar equatorial planes perpendicular to the symmetry axis of the system.
