S-wave/spin-triplet order in superconductors without inversion symmetry: Li$_2$Pd$_3$B and Li$_2$Pt$_3$B

We investigate the order parameter of noncentrosymmetric superconductors Li$_2$Pd$_3$B and Li$_2$Pt$_3$B via the behavior of the penetration depth $λ(T)$. The low-temperature penetration depth shows BCS-like behavior in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B, while in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B it follows a linear temperature dependence. We propose that broken inversion symmetry and the accompanying antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling, which admix spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing, are responsible for this behavior. The triplet contribution is weak in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B, leading to a wholly open but anisotropic gap. The significantly larger spin-orbit coupling in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B allows the spin-triplet component to be larger in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B, producing line nodes in the energy gap as evidenced by the linear temperature dependence of $λ(T)$. The experimental data are in quantitative agreement with theory.

Role of Inelastic Tunneling through the Barrier in Scanning Tunneling Microscope Experiments on Cuprates

The tunneling path between the CuO2-layers in cuprate superconductors and a scanning tunneling microscope tip passes through a barrier made from other oxide layers. This opens up the possibility that inelastic processes in the barrier contribute to the tunneling spectra. Such processes cause one or possibly more peaks in the second derivative current-voltage spectra displaced by phonon energies from the density of states singularity associated with superconductivity. Calculations of inelastic processes generated by apical O-phonons show good qualitative agreement with recent experiments reported by Lee et al.[1]. Further tests to discriminate between these inelastic processes and coupling to planar phonons are proposed.

Magnetic domain formation in itinerant metamagnets

We examine the effects of long-range dipolar forces on metamagnetic transitions and generalize the theory of Condon domains to the case of an itinerant electron system undergoing a first-order metamagnetic transition. We demonstrate that within a finite range of the applied field, dipolar interactions induce a spatial modulation of the magnetization in the form of stripes or bubbles. Our findings are consistent with recent observations in the bilayer ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$.

Checkerboard order in the t--J model on the square lattice

We propose that the inhomogeneous patterns seen by STM in some underdoped superconducting cuprates could be related to a bond-order-wave instability of the staggered flux state, one of the most studied "normal" state proposed to compete with the d-wave RVB superconductor. A checkerboard pattern is obtained by a Gutzwiller renormalized mean-field theory of the t-J model for doping around 1/8. It is found that the charge modulation is always an order of magnitude smaller than the bond-order modulations. This is confirmed by an exact optimization of the wavefunction by a variational Monte Carlo scheme. The numerical estimates of the order parameters are however found to be strongly reduced w.r.t their mean-field values.

Fano effect in a ring-dot system with tunable coupling

Transport measurements are presented on a quantum ring that is tunnel-coupled to a quantum dot. When the dot is in the Coulomb blockade regime, but strongly coupled to the open ring, Fano line shapes are observed in the current through the ring, when the electron number in the dot changes by one. The symmetry of the Fano resonances is found to depend on the magnetic flux penetrating the area of the ring and on the strength of the ring-dot coupling. At temperatures above T=0.65 K the Fano effect disappears while the Aharonov-Bohm interference in the ring persists up to T=4.2 K. Good agreement is found between these experimental observations and a single channel scattering matrix model including decoherence in the dot.

Spatially Resolved NMR Relaxation Rate in a Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor

We numerically study the spatially-resolved NMR around a single vortex in a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 under the influence of the vortex core states is calculated for an s+p-wave Cooper pairing state. The result is compared with that for an s-wave pairing state.

Basic Properties of a Vortex in a Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor

We numerically study the vortex core structure in a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si without mirror symmetry about the xy plane. A single vortex along the z axis and a mixed singlet-triplet Cooper pairing model are considered. The spatial profiles of the pair potential, local density of states, supercurrent density, and radially-textured magnetic moment density around the vortex are obtained in the clean limit on the basis of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity.

Temperature Dependence of the Superfluid Density in a Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor

For a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si, we consider a Cooper pairing model with a two-component order parameter composed of spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing components. We calculate the superfluid density tensor in the clean limit on the basis of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity. We demonstrate that such a pairing model accounts for an experimentally observed feature of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth in CePt3Si, i.e., line-node-gap behavior at low temperatures.

Superconductors without an inversion center of symmetry: The s-wave state

In materials without an inversion center of symmetry the spin degeneracy of the conducting band is lifted by an antisymmetric spin orbit coupling (ASOC). Under such circumstances, spin and parity cannot be separately used to classify the Cooper pairing states. Consequently, the superconducting order parameter is generally a mixture of spin singlet and triplet pairing states. In this paper we investigate the structure of the order parameter and its response to disorder for the most symmetric pairing state ($A_1$). Using the example of the heavy Fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si, we determine characteristic properties of the superconducting instability as a function of (non-magnetic) impurity concentrations. Moreover, we explore the possibility of the presence of accidental line nodes in the quasiparticle gap. Such nodes would be essential to explain recent low-temperature data of thermodynamic quantities such as the NMR-$T_1^{-1}$, London penetration depth, and heat conductance.

Phase coherence in the inelastic cotunneling regime

Two quantum dots with tunable mutual tunnel coupling have been embedded in a two-terminal Aharonov-Bohm geometry. Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are investigated in the cotunneling regime. Visibilities of more than 0.8 are measured indicating that phase-coherent processes are involved in the elastic and inelastic cotunneling. An oscillation-phase change of pi is detected as a function of bias voltage at the inelastic cotunneling onset.

Slave-boson theory of the Mott transition in the two-band Hubbard model

We apply the slave-boson approach of Kotliar and Ruckenstein to the two-band Hubbard model with an Ising like Hund's rule coupling and bands of different widths. On the mean-field level of this approach we investigate the Mott transition and observe both separate and joint transitions of the two bands depending on the choice of the inter- and intraorbital Coulomb interaction parameters. The mean-field calculations allow for a simple physical interpretation and can confirm several aspects of previous work. Beside the case of two individually half-filled bands we also examine what happens if the original metallic bands possess fractional filling either due to finite doping or due to a crystal field which relatively shifts the atomic energy levels of the two orbitals. For appropriate values of the interaction and of the crystal field we can observe a a band insulating state and a ferromagnetic metal.

Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation Rate in a Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor

For a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si, we consider a Cooper pairing model with a two-component order parameter composed of spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing components. We demonstrate that such a model on a qualitative level accounts for experimentally observed features of the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1, namely a peak just below Tc and a line-node gap behavior at low temperatures.

Helical vortex phase in the non-centrosymmetric CePt_3Si

We consider the role of magnetic fields on the broken inversion superconductor CePt_3Si. We show that upper critical field for a field along the c-axis exhibits a much weaker paramagnetic effect than for a field applied perpendicular to the c-axis. The in-plane paramagnetic effect is strongly reduced by the appearance of helical structure in the order parameter. We find that to get good agreement between theory and recent experimental measurements of H_{c2}, this helical structure is required. We propose a Josephson junction experiment that can be used to detect this helical order. In particular, we predict that Josephson current will exhibit a magnetic interference pattern for a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the junction normal. We also discuss unusual magnetic effects associated with the helical order.

Josephson interferometer in a ring topology as a symmetry prove of Sr_2RuO_4

The Josephson effect is theoretically studied in two types of SQUIDs consisting of $s$ wave superconductor and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Results show various response of the critical Josephson current to applied magnetic fields depending on the type of SQUID and on the pairing symmetries. In the case of a $p_x+ip_y$ wave symmetry, the critical current in a corner SQUID becomes an asymmetric function of magnetic fields near the critical temperatures. Our results well explain a recent experimental finding [Nelson et. al, Science \textbf{306}, 1151 (2004)]. We also discuss effects of chiral domains on the critical current.

Spatially resolved manipulation of single electrons in quantum dots using a scanned probe

The scanning metallic tip of a scanning force microscope was coupled capacitively to electrons confined in a lithographically defined gate-tunable quantum dot at a temperature of 300 mK. Single electrons were made to hop on or off the dot by moving the tip or by changing the tip bias voltage owing to the Coulomb-blockade effect. Spatial images of conductance resonances map the interaction potential between the tip and individual electronic quantum dot states. Under certain conditions this interaction is found to contain a tip-voltage induced and a tip-voltage independent contribution.

Multiple layer local oxidation for fabricating semiconductor nanostructures

Coupled semiconductor nanostructures with a high degree of tunability are fabricated using local oxidation with a scanning force microscope. Direct oxidation of the GaAs surface of a Ga[Al]As heterostructure containing a shallow two-dimensional electron gas is combined with the local oxidation of a thin titanium film evaporated on top. A four-terminal quantum dot and a double quantum dot system with integrated charge readout are realized. The structures are tunable via in-plane gates formed by isolated regions in the electron gas and by mutually isolated regions of the Ti film acting as top gates. Coulomb blockade experiments demonstrate the high quality of this fabrication process.

Impurity Effect on Kramer-Pesch Core Shrinkage in s-Wave Vortex and Chiral p-Wave Vortex

The low-temperature shrinking of the vortex core (Kramer-Pesch effect) is studied for an isolated single vortex for chiral p-wave and s-wave superconducting phases. The effect of nonmagnetic impurities on the vortex core radius is numerically investigated in the Born limit by means of a quasiclassical approach. It is shown that in the chiral p-wave phase the Kramer-Pesch effect displays a certain robustness against impurities owing to a specific quantum effect, while the s-wave phase reacts more sensitively to impurity scattering. This suggests chiral p-wave superconductors as promising candidates for the experimental observation of the Kramer-Pesch effect.

Spin susceptibility in superconductors without inversion symmetry

In materials without spatial inversion symmetry the spin degeneracy of the conduction electrons can be lifted by an antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. We discuss the influence of this spin-orbit coupling on the spin susceptibility of such superconductors, with a particular emphasis on the recently discovered heavy Fermion superconductor CePt3Si. We find that, for this compound (with tetragonal crystal symmetry,) irrespective of the pairing symmetry, the stable superconducting phases would give a very weak change of the spin susceptibility for fields along the c-axis and an intermediate reduction for fields in the basal plane. We also comment on the consequences for the paramagnetic limiting in this material.
