Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking Superconductivity in Sr2RuO4

We report muon spin relaxation measurements on the superconductor Sr2RuO4 that reveal the spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the transition temperature: the appearance of such a field indicates that the superconducting state in this material is characterized by the breaking of time-reversal symmetry. These results, combined with other symmetry considerations, suggest that superconductivity in Sr2RuO4 is of p-wave (odd-parity) type, analogous to superfluid 3He.

Effects of Fermi Surface Anisotropy on Unconventional Superconductivity in UPt_3

We discuss the weak-coupling BCS theory of the heavy fermion superconductor UPt_3, accounting for that system's anisotropic, multisheeted Fermi surface by expanding the order parameter and pair potential in terms of appropriate basis functions of the irreducible representations of the D_6h crystal point group. Within a phenomenological model for the electronic structure of UPt_3 chosen to capture the qualitative features of local density functional calculations and de Haas-van Alphen measurements, we show how Fermi surface anisotropy can favor pairing in certain symmetry classes, and influence the phase diagram of unconventional superconductors. We also calculate the Ginzburg-Landau coefficients, focussing on those coefficients relevant to current theories of the UPt_3 phase diagram.

Quasiclassical theory of twin boundaries in High-T_c superconductors

We investigate the electronic structure of twin boundaries in orthorhombically distorted high-T$_c$ materials using the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity. At low temperatures we find a local instability to a time-reversal symmetry breaking state at the twin boundary. This state yields spontaneous currents along the twin boundary that are microscopically explained by the structure of the quasiparticle bound states. We calculate the local density of states and find a splitting in the zero-bias peak once the spontaneous currents set in. This splitting is measurable by STM techniques and is a unique signature of time-reversal breaking states at a twin boundary.

Thermodynamic properties of the one-dimensional Kondo insulators studied by the density matrix renormalization group method

Thermodynamic properties of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at half-filling are studied by the density matrix renormalization group method applied to the quantum transfer matrix. Spin susceptibility, charge susceptibility, and specific heat are calculated down to T=0.1t for various exchange constants. The obtained results clearly show crossover behavior from the high temperature regime of nearly independent localized spins and conduction electrons to the low temperature regime where the two degrees of freedom couple strongly. The low temperature energy scales of the charge and spin susceptibilities are determined and shown to be equal to the quasiparticle gap and the spin gap, respectively, for weak exchange couplings.

Magnetic imaging of the paramagnetic Meissner effect in the granular high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox

We have imaged the spatial distribution of magnetic flux on a granular sample of the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox using a scanning SQUID microscope. Our results establish the presence of spontaneous orbital magnetic moments which were suggested to be the origin of the paramagnetic response of these materials. The signature of the orbital magnetic moments is a rather broad distribution of local magnetic fields at the surface of the sample. A simple model for the distribution is presented.

Asymmetric magnetic interference patterns in 0-pi Josephson junctions

We examine the magnetic interference patterns of Josephson junctions with a region of 0- and of pi-phase shift. Such junctions have recently been realized as c-axis YBCO-Pb junctions with a single twin boundary in YBCO. We show that in general the junction generates self-fields which introduces an asymmetry in the critical current under reversal of the magnetic field. Numerical calculations of these asymmetries indicate they account well for the unexplained features observed in single twin boundary junctions.

Low-Energy Properties of Regularly Depleted Spin Ladders

We investigate a model for the regularly depleted two-leg spin ladder systems. By using Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem, it is rigorously shown that this model realizes massless excitations or, alternatively, a degenerate ground state, although the original spin ladder system has a spin gap and a unique ground state. The ground state of the depleted model is either a spin singlet or partially ferromagnetic reflecting topological properties of the depleted sites. In order to show that the low-energy excitations are indeed massless, we proceed our analysis in two different ways by resorting to effective field theories. We first investigate an effective weak-coupling model in terms of renormalization group methods. Although the tendency to massless spin excitations is seen in the strong coupling regime, it turns out that the model is still massive for any finite coupling, implying that a conventional weak-coupling approach is not efficient to describe massless modes in our model. To overcome this difficulty, we further study low-energy properties of the depleted spin model by mapping on the non-linear sigma model, and confirm that the massless spin excitation indeed occur.

Phase transition in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model with attractive electron-electron interaction

The one-dimensional Kondo lattice model with attractive interaction among the conduction electrons is analyzed in the case of half-filling. It is shown that there are three distinct phases depending on the coupling constants of the model. Two phases have a spin and charge gap. While one shows a clear separation of the spin and charge excitation spectrum the other phase may be characterized as a band insulator type where both excitations are due to two-particle states. The third phase is gapless in both channels and has quasi long-range order in the spin and charge density wave correlation. In this phase the spin and charge excitations have again a clearly separated spectrum. For the analysis we discuss first two limiting cases. Then a density matrix renormalization group calculation on finite systems is applied to determine the phase diagram and the correlation functions in the gapped and gapless phase for general couplding constants.

Orbital dependent superconductivity in Sr_2RuO_4

We show that for superconducting Sr_2RuO_4 any unconventional pairing in the part of the Fermi surface with Ru 4d-xy orbital character is weakly coupled to that with Ru 4d-xz, 4d-yz orbital character. This naturally gives rise to two disparate energy scales in the superconducting state which leads to novel low temperature properties in a variety of thermodynamic and transport properties and which would also account for the large residual density of states seen in specific heat and NQR measurements.

The Low-Energy Fixed Points of Random Quantum Spin Chains

The one-dimensional isotropic quantum Heisenberg spin systems with random couplings and random spin sizes are investigated using a real-space renormalization group scheme. It is demonstrated that these systems belong to a universality class of disordered spin systems, characterized by weakly coupled large effective spins. In this large-spin phase the uniform magnetic susceptibility diverges as 1/T with a non-universal Curie constant at low temperatures T, while the specific heat vanishes as T^delta |ln T| for T->0. For broad range of initial distributions of couplings and spin sizes the distribution functions approach a single fixed-point form, where delta \approx 0.44. For some singular initial distributions, however, fixed-point distributions have non-universal values of delta, suggesting that there is a line of fixed points.

Non-magnetic Impurities in Spin Gap Systems

The effect of non-magnetic impurities is discussed for both the two-leg Heisenberg ladder system and other spin liquids with excitation gap. It is shown that the random depletion of spins introduces a random Berry phase term to the non-linear sigma model. The classical nature of the antiferromagnetic correlation is enhanced by the topological decoherence, and the staggered susceptibility shows more singular behavior at low temperatures than the uniform antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain.

Low-Temperature Properties of the Randomly Depleted Heisenberg Ladder

Low-temperature thermodynamic properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder system with non-magnetic impurities are discussed using an effective Hamiltonian for the impurity-induced spins in the background of a spin liquid with a gap. It is shown that the uniform susceptibility shows Curie-like behavior in high-, intermediate-, and low-temperature regimes, with three different Curie constants. The ratio of specific heat to temperature, C/T, is divergent in the low-temperature limit, reflecting a singular distribution of the effective couplings among the impurity spins.

Random Exchange Quantum Heisenberg Chains

The one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg model with random $\pm J$ bonds is studied for $S=\frac{1}{2}$ and $S=1$. The specific heat and the zero-field susceptibility are calculated by using high-temperature series expansions and quantum transfer matrix method. The susceptibility shows a Curie-like temperature dependence at low temperatures as well as at high temperatures. The numerical results for the specific heat suggest that there are anomalously many low-lying excitations. The qualitative nature of these excitations is discussed based on the exact diagonalization of finite size systems.

Random Quantum Spin Chains: A Real-Space Renormalization Group Study

Quantum Heisenberg spin chains with random couplings and spin sizes are studied using a real-space renormalization group technique. These systems belong to a new universality class of disordered quantum spin systems realized in {\it e.g.} ${\rm Sr}_3{\rm CuPt}_{1-x}{\rm Ir}_x {\rm O}_6$. The low-energy fixed point is characterized by the formation of weakly coupled large effective spins. At low temperature $T$ the entropy obeys a power law $T^δ$ ($δ\approx0.44$), and the susceptibility follows a Curie-like behavior.

Superconductivity in a Quasi One Dimensional Spin Liquid

The single rung t-J ladder is analyzed in a mean field theory using Gutzwiller renormalization of the matrix elements to account for strong correlation. The spin liquid (RVB) state at half-filling evolves into a superconducting state upon doping. The order parameter has a modified d-wave character. A lattice of weakly coupled ladders should show a superconducting phase transition.

Spin-ladders with spin gaps: A description of a class of cuprates

We investigate the magnetic properties of the Cu-O planes in stoichiometric Sr$_{n-1}$Cu$_{n+1}$O$_{2n}$ (n=3,5,7,...) which consist of CuO double chains periodically intergrown within the CuO$_2$ planes. The double chains break up the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic planes into Heisenberg spin ladders with $n_r=\frac{1}{2}(n-1)$ rungs and $n_l=\frac{1}{2}(n+1)$ legs and described by the usual antiferromagnetic coupling J inside each ladder and a weak and frustrated interladder coupling J$^\prime$. The resulting lattice is a new two-dimensional trellis lattice. We first examine the spin excitation spectra of isolated quasi one dimensional Heisenberg ladders which exhibit a gapless spectra when $n_r$ is even and $n_l$ is odd ( corresponding to n=5,9,...) and a gapped spectra when $n_r$ is odd and $n_l$ is even (corresponding to n=3,7,...). We use the bond operator representation of quantum $S=\frac{1}{2}$ spins in a mean field treatment with self-energy corrections and obtain a spin gap of $\approx \frac{1}{2} J$ for the simplest single rung ladder (n=3), in agreement with numerical estimates.
