A new approach to the study of high energy muon bundles with the MACRO detector at Gran Sasso

The MACRO experiment detected more than 300000 multiple muon events. We analysed these events to measure the distribution of the separation of underground TeV muons (decoherence function), up to a distance of 70 meters. On a subsample of very high multiplicity events, we performed two independent analyses, based on the study of the spatial structure of the bundles. Both the analyses revealed a correlation between the topology of the bundles and the dynamics of the shower development in atmosphere. These results have been used to constrain and disentangle the primary composition and the hadronic interaction models used by different shower propagation codes (HEMAS-DPM/CORSIKA).

Use of Coulomb scattering for determining neutrino energies with MACRO

An estimate of the energy of neutrino-induced muons in MACRO is provided by a multiple Coulomb scattering measurement. The MACRO original upward-muon data sample has been subdivided according to the reconstructed muon energy. Data in each subset are then compared with expected fluxes from atmospheric neutrinos. The results are interpreted in terms of neutrino oscillations.

Measurement of the ratio double/single muon events as a function of rock depth with MACRO

We report the measurement by the MACRO experiment of the ratio of double muon events over single muon events as a function of rock depth. Particular attention has been devoted to the analysis of high zenith angle events. Results are compared to the expectation of a detailed simulation performed with HEMAS-DPM Monte Carlo. No deviations with respect to ``standard physics'' predictions have been found.

Cosmic Ray Muon Physics

We present a review of atmospheric and underground muon flux measurements. The relevance of these data for the atmospheric neutrino flux computation is emphasized. Possible sources of systematic errors in the measurements are discussed, focusing on the sea level muon data. Underground muon data are also reported.

Underground Muon Physics with the MACRO experiment

Underground muon events detected by the MACRO experiment at Gran Sasso have been studied for different purposes. The studies include the vertical muon intensity measurement, multiplicity distribution, lateral and angular muon distribution and searches for substructures inside muon bundles. These analyses have contributed to bring new insights in cosmic ray physics, in particular in the framework of primary cosmic ray composition studies. Moreover, this activity allows the testing and tuning of Monte Carlo simulations, in particular for aspects associated with models of hadronic interactions and muon propagation through the rock.
