HD45314: a new gamma Cas analog among Oe stars

Oe stars possibly form an extension to higher temperatures of the Be phenomenon, but it is still unclear whether these stars have disks. X-ray spectra could provide hints for interactions of the star with a putative surrounding disk. We obtained XMM-Newton observations of two Oe stars, HD45314 and HD60848. Spectra and light curves were extracted and analysed. Optical spectra were also obtained to support the X-ray observations. We find that both stars display very different X-ray properties. Whilst HD60848 has an X-ray spectrum and emission level typical for its spectral type, HD45314 displays a very hard X-ray emission, dominated by a thermal plasma with kT ~ 21 keV. Furthermore, HD45314 displays count rate variations by a factor 2 on timescales of ~ 1000s and a high log(L_X/L_bol) = -6.10 +/- 0.03. The X-ray properties of HD45314 indicate that this star is a new member of the class of gamma Cas analogs, the first one among the original category of Oe stars.

9 Sgr: uncovering an O-type spectroscopic binary with an 8.6 year period

The O-type object 9 Sgr is a well-known synchrotron radio emitter. This feature is usually attributed to colliding-wind binary systems, but 9 Sgr was long considered a single star. We have conducted a long-term spectroscopic monitoring of this star to investigate its multiplicity and search for evidence for wind-wind interactions. Radial velocities are determined and analysed using various period search methods. Spectral disentangling is applied to separate the spectra of the components of the binary system. We derive the first ever orbital solution of 9 Sgr. The system is found to consist of an O3.5 V((f+)) primary and an O5- 5.5 V((f)) secondary moving around each other on a highly eccentric (e = 0.7), 8.6 year orbit. The spectra reveal no variable emission lines that could be formed in the wind interaction zone in agreement with the expected properties of the interaction in such a wide system. Our results provide further support to the paradigm of synchrotron radio emission from early-type stars being a manifestation of interacting winds in a binary system.

Long Period Variables in the Large Magellanic Cloud from the EROS-2 survey

Context. The EROS-2 survey has produced a database of millions of time series from stars monitored for more than six years, allowing to classify some of their sources into different variable star types. Among these, Long Period Variables (LPVs), known to follow sequences in the period-luminosity diagram, include long secondary period variables whose variability origin is still a matter of debate. Aims.We use the 856 864 variable stars available from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the EROS-2 database to detect, classify and characterize LPVs. Methods. Our method to extract LPVs is based on the statistical Abbe test. It investigates the regularity of the light curve with respect to the survey duration in order to extract candidates with long-term variability. The period search is done by Deeming, Lomb-Scargle and generalized Lomb-Scargle methods, combined with Fourier series fit. Color-magnitude, period-magnitude and period-amplitude diagrams are used to characterize our candidates. Results. We present a catalog of 43 551 LPV candidates for the Large Magellanic Cloud. For each of them, we provide up to five periods, mean magnitude in EROS-2, 2MASS and Spitzer bands, BE-RE color, RE amplitude and spectral type.We use infrared data to make the distinction between RGB, O-rich, C-rich and extreme AGB stars. Properties of our LPV candidates are investigated by analyzing period-luminosity and period-amplitude diagrams.

New findings on the prototypical Of?p stars

In recent years several in-depth investigations of the three Galactic Of?p stars were undertaken. These multiwavelength studies revealed the peculiar properties of these objects (in the X-rays as well as in the optical): magnetic fields, periodic line profile variations, recurrent photometric changes. However, many questions remain unsolved. To clarify some of the properties of the Of?p stars, we have continued their monitoring. A new XMM observation and two new optical datasets were obtained. Additional information for the prototypical Of?p trio has been found. HD108 has now reached its quiescent, minimum-emission state, for the first time in 50--60yrs. The echelle spectra of HD148937 confirm the presence of the 7d variations in the Balmer lines and reveal similar periodic variations (though of lower amplitudes) in the HeI5876 and HeII4686 lines, underlining its similarities with the other two prototypical Of?p stars. The new XMM observation of HD191612 was taken at the same phase in the line modulation cycle but at a different orbital phase as previous data. It clearly shows that the X-ray emission of HD191612 is modulated by the 538d period and not the orbital period of 1542d - it is thus not of colliding-wind origin and the phenomenon responsible for the optical changes appears also at work in the high-energy domain. There are however problems: our MHD simulations of the wind magnetic confinement predict both a harder X-ray flux of a much larger strength than what is observed (the modeled DEM peaks at 30-40MK, whereas the observed one peaks at 2MK) and narrow lines (hot gas moving with velocities of 100--200km/s, whereras the observed FWHM is ~2000km/s).

Towards ensemble asteroseismology of the young open clusters Chi Persei and NGC 6910

As a result of the variability survey in Chi Persei and NGC6910, the number of Beta Cep stars that are members of these two open clusters is increased to twenty stars, nine in NGC6910 and eleven in Chi Persei. We compare pulsational properties, in particular the frequency spectra, of Beta Cep stars in both clusters and explain the differences in terms of the global parameters of the clusters. We also indicate that the more complicated pattern of the variability among B type stars in Chi Persei is very likely caused by higher rotational velocities of stars in this cluster. We conclude that the sample of pulsating stars in the two open clusters constitutes a very good starting point for the ensemble asteroseismology of Beta Cep-type stars and maybe also for other B-type pulsators.

Photometric multi-site campaign on the open cluster NGC 884 I. Detection of the variable stars

CONTEXT: Recent progress in the seismic interpretation of field beta Cep stars has resulted in improvements of the physics in the stellar structure and evolution models of massive stars. Further asteroseismic constraints can be obtained from studying ensembles of stars in a young open cluster, which all have similar age, distance and chemical composition. AIMS: To improve our comprehension of the beta Cep stars, we studied the young open cluster NGC 884 to discover new B-type pulsators, besides the two known beta Cep stars, and other variable stars. METHODS: An extensive multi-site campaign was set up to gather accurate CCD photometry time series in four filters (U, B, V, I) of a field of NGC884. Fifteen different instruments collected almost 77500 CCD images in 1286 hours. The images were calibrated and reduced to transform the CCD frames into interpretable differential light curves. Various variability indicators and frequency analyses were applied to detect variable stars in the field. Absolute photometry was taken to deduce some general cluster and stellar properties. RESULTS: We achieved an accuracy for the brightest stars of 5.7 mmag in V, 6.9 mmag in B, 5.0 mmag in I and 5.3 mmag in U. The noise level in the amplitude spectra is 50 micromag in the V band. Our campaign confirms the previously known pulsators, and we report more than one hundred new multi- and mono-periodic B-, A- and F-type stars. Their interpretation in terms of classical instability domains is not straightforward, pointing to imperfections in theoretical instability computations. In addition, we have discovered six new eclipsing binaries and four candidates as well as other irregular variable stars in the observed field.

Photometric campaign on massive stars in the open cluster NGC 5617

A campaign on the open cluster NGC 5617 was organized in order to characterize the pulsations and to better understand the internal structure of its stars. The variability of the cluster members was never studied before. We present the observations taken and an up-to-date analysis of the obtained time series, especially of several SPB candidates we discovered.

GHASP : an H alpha kinematic survey of spiral and irregular galaxies. V. Dark matter distribution in 36 nearby spiral galaxies

The results obtained from a study of the mass distribution of 36 spiral galaxies are presented. The galaxies were observed using Fabry-Perot interferometry as part of the GHASP survey. The main aim of obtaining high resolution H alpha 2D velocity fields is to define more accurately the rising part of the rotation curves which should allow to better constrain the parameters of the mass distribution. The H alpha velocities were combined with low resolution HI data from the literature, when available. Combining the kinematical data with photometric data, mass models were derived from these rotation curves using two different functional forms for the halo: an isothermal sphere and an NFW profile. For the galaxies already modeled by other authors, the results tend to agree. Our results point at the existence of a constant density core in the center of the dark matter halos rather than a cuspy core, whatever the type of the galaxy from Sab to Im. This extends to all types the result already obtained by other authors studying dwarf and LSB galaxies but would necessitate a larger sample of galaxies to conclude more strongly. Whatever model is used (ISO or NFW), small core radius halos have higher central densities, again for all morphological types. We confirm different halo scaling laws, such as the correlations between the core radius and the central density of the halo with the absolute magnitude of a galaxy: low luminosity galaxies have small core radius and high central density. We find that the product of the central density with the core radius of the dark matter halo is nearly constant, whatever the model and whatever the absolute magnitude of the galaxy. This suggests that the halo surface density is independent from the galaxy type.

Inverted Repeats in Viral Genomes

We investigate 738 complete genomes of viruses to detect the presence of short inverted repeats. The number of inverted repeats found is compared with the prediction obtained for a Bernoullian and for a Markovian control model. We find as a statistical regularity that the number of observed inverted repeats is often greater than the one expected in terms of a Bernoullian or Markovian model in several of the viruses and in almost all those with a genome longer than 30,000 bp.
