Prospects of Open Charm Production at GSI-FAIR and J-PARC

We present a detailed phenomenological study of the prospects of open charm physics at the future $\bar{p}p$ and $pp$ facilities GSI-FAIR and J-PARC, respectively. In particular, we concentrate on differential cross sections and the charge and longitudinal double-spin asymmetries at next-to-leading order accuracy. Theoretical uncertainties for the proposed observables are estimated by varying the charm quark mass and the renormalization and factorization scales.

Global analysis of fragmentation functions for pions and kaons and their uncertainties

We present new sets of pion and kaon fragmentation functions obtained in NLO combined analyses of single-inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation, proton-proton collisions, and deep-inelastic lepton-proton scattering with either pions or kaons identified in the final state. At variance with all previous fits, the present analyses take into account data where hadrons of different electrical charge are identified, which allow to discriminate quark from anti-quark fragmentation functions without the need of non trivial flavor symmetry assumptions. The resulting sets are in good agreement with all data analyzed, which cover a much wider kinematical range than in previous fits. An extensive use of the Lagrange multiplier technique is made in order to assess the uncertainties in the extraction of the fragmentation functions and the synergy from the complementary data sets in our global analysis.

Hadron-Pair Photoproduction in Longitudinally Polarized Lepton-Nucleon Collisions

We present a detailed phenomenological study of photoproduction of two hadrons, both with high transverse momentum, in longitudinally polarized lepton-nucleon collisions. We consistently include ``direct'' and ``resolved'' photon contributions and examine the sensitivity of the relevant spin asymmetries to the gluon polarization in the nucleon and to the completely unknown parton content of circularly polarized photons. Our results are relevant for the COMPASS and HERMES fixed-target experiments as well as for a possible future polarized lepton-proton collider like eRHIC at BNL. So far, all studies are limited to the lowest order approximation of QCD.

Longitudinally Polarized Photoproduction of Inclusive Hadrons at Fixed-Target Experiments

We present a detailed phenomenological study of spin-dependent single-inclusive high-p_T hadron photoproduction with particular emphasis on the kinematics relevant for the Compass and Hermes fixed-target experiments. We carefully examine the theoretical uncertainties associated with the only moderate transverse momenta accessible in such measurements and analyze the sensitivity of the relevant spin asymmetries to the gluon polarization in the nucleon as well as to the completely unknown parton content of circularly polarized photons.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to single-inclusive hadron production in transversely polarized p-p and pbar-p collisions

We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the partonic cross sections contributing to single-inclusive high-p_T hadron production in collisions of transversely polarized hadrons. We use a recently developed projection technique for treating the phase space integrals in the presence of the cos(2Phi) azimuthal-angular dependence associated with transverse polarization. Our phenomenological results show that the double-spin asymmetry A_TT^pi for neutral-pion production is expected to be very small for polarized pp scattering at RHIC and could be much larger for the proposed experiments with an asymmetric pbar-p collider at the GSI

Double Transverse Spin Asymmetries at Next-to-leading Order in QCD

We present a technique to calculate the cross sections and spin asymmetries for transversely polarized $pp$ collisions at NLO in QCD and report on the use of this technique for the processes $p^{\uparrow} p^{\uparrow} \to γX$, $p^{\uparrow} p^{\uparrow} \to πX$ and $p^{\uparrow} p^{\uparrow} \to l^+ l^- X$.

Longitudinal Gluon Polarization in RHIC Double-Spin Asymmetries

The longitudinally polarized gluon density is probed sensitively in hard collisions of polarized protons under the condition that the dominant dynamics are perturbative and of leading twist origin. First data have recently been presented by Phenix on the double-spin asymmetry A_{LL}^{pi} for pi^0 production at moderate transverse momentum p_\perp \simeq 1 - 4 GeV and central rapidity. By means of a systematic investigation of the relevant degrees of freedom we show that the perturbative QCD framework at leading power in p_\perp produces an asymmetry that is basically positive definite in this kinematic range, i.e. A_{LL}^{pi}\gtrsim O(-10^{-3}) .

Single-Inclusive Jet Production in Polarized pp Collisions at O(alpha_s^3)

We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation for single-inclusive high-p_T jet production in longitudinally polarized pp collisions within the ``small-cone'' approximation. The fully analytical expressions obtained for the underlying partonic hard-scattering cross sections greatly facilitate the analysis of upcoming BNL-RHIC data on the double-spin asymmetry A_{LL}^{jet} for this process in terms of the unknown polarization of gluons in the nucleon. We simultaneously rederive the corresponding QCD corrections to unpolarized scattering and confirm the results existing in the literature. We also numerically compare to results obtained with Monte-Carlo methods and assess the range of validity of the ``small-cone'' approximation for the kinematics relevant at BNL-RHIC.

Longitudinally Polarized Photoproduction of Inclusive Hadrons Beyond the Leading Order

We present a complete next-to-leading order QCD calculation for single-inclusive large-pT hadron production in longitudinally polarized lepton-nucleon collisions, consistently including ``direct'' and ``resolved'' photon contributions. This process could be studied experimentally at a future polarized lepton-proton collider like eRHIC at BNL. We examine the sensitivity of such measurements to the so far completely unknown parton content of circularly polarized photons.

Double-transverse spin asymmetries at NLO

We report on a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the cross section and the spin asymmetry for isolated large-p_T prompt photon production in collisions of transversely polarized protons. Corresponding measurements may be used at RHIC to determine the transversity parton distributions of the proton.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to A_TT for prompt photon production

We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the cross section for isolated large-p_T prompt photon production in collisions of transversely polarized protons. We devise a simple method of dealing with the phase space integrals in dimensional regularization in the presence of the cos(2 phi) azimuthal-angular dependence occurring for transverse polarization. Our results allow to calculate the double-spin asymmetry A_TT for this process at next-to-leading order accuracy, which may be used at BNL-RHIC to measure the transversity parton distributions of the proton.

NLO QCD Corrections to A_LL^pi

We present a calculation for single-inclusive large-p_T pion production in longitudinally polarized pp collisions in next-to-leading order QCD. The corresponding double-spin asymmetry A_LL^pi for this process will soon be used at BNL-RHIC to measure Delta g.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to high-p_T pion production in longitudinally polarized pp collisions

We present a calculation for single-inclusive large-p_T pion production in longitudinally polarized pp collisions in next-to-leading order QCD. We choose an approach where fully analytical expressions for the underlying partonic hard-scattering cross sections are obtained. We simultaneously rederive the corresponding corrections to unpolarized scattering and confirm the results existing in the literature. Our results allow to calculate the double-spin asymmetry A_LL^pi for this process at next-to-leading order, which will soon be used at BNL-RHIC to measure the polarization of gluons in the nucleon.

Next-to-Leading Order QCD Corrections to the Polarized Hadroproduction of Heavy Flavors

We present the complete next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the polarized hadroproduction of heavy flavors which soon will be studied experimentally in polarized pp collisions at the BNL RHIC in order to constrain the polarized gluon density Delta g. It is demonstrated that the dependence on unphysical renormalization and factorization scales is strongly reduced beyond the leading order. The sensitivity of the heavy quark spin asymmetry to Delta g is studied, including the limited detector acceptance for experimentally observable leptons from heavy quark decays at the BNL RHIC. As a further application of our results, gluino pair production in polarized pp collisions is briefly discussed.

Ultrahigh energy neutrinos, small x and unitarity

The ultrahigh energy cross section for neutrino interactions with nucleons is reviewed, and unitarity constraints are discussed. We argue that existing QCD extrapolations are self-consistent, and do not imply a breakdown of the perturbative expansion in the weak coupling.

Partons and QCD in high-energy polarized pp collisions

We present and use a technique for implementing in a fast way, and without any approximations, higher-order calculations of partonic cross sections into global analyses of parton distribution functions. The approach, which is set up in Mellin-moment space, is particularly suited for analyses of future data from polarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC, but not limited to this case. We also briefly discuss the effects of soft-gluon resummations on spin asymmetries.

Towards a global analysis of polarized parton distributions

We present a technique for implementing in a fast way, and without any approximations, higher-order calculations of partonic cross sections into global analyses of parton distribution functions. The approach, which is set up in Mellin-moment space, is particularly suited for analyses of future data from polarized proton-proton collisions, but not limited to this case. The usefulness and practicability of this method is demonstrated for the semi-inclusive production of hadrons in deep-inelastic scattering and the transverse momentum distribution of ``prompt'' photons in pp collisions, and a case study for a future global analysis of polarized parton densities is presented.
