Polarized antiquark flavor asymmetry in Drell-Yan pair production

We investigate the role of the flavor asymmetry of the nucleon's polarized antiquark distributions in Drell-Yan lepton pair production in polarized nucleon-nucleon collisions at HERA (fixed-target) and RHIC energies. It is shown that the large polarized antiquark flavor asymmetry predicted by model calculations in the large-N_c limit (chiral quark-soliton model) has a dramatic effect on the double spin asymmetries in high mass lepton pair production, as well as on the single spin asymmetries in lepton pair production through $W^\pm$-bosons at $M^2 = M_W^2$.

Charmonium Suppression - Interplay of Hadronic and Partonic Degrees of Freedom

Last year the E866-group of the Fermilab measured the $x_F$ dependence of $J/Ψ$ and $Ψ'$ suppression in $pA$ collisions. We discuss two of the effects found in that experiment with regard to color coherence effects: the different suppression of the $J/Ψ$ and the $Ψ'$ at $x_F<0$ and the significant suppression of both at large $x_F$. The small $x_F$ regions is dominated by fully formed charmonium states and thus enables us to discuss the formation time and the cross section of the different charmonium states. In the large $x_F$ region the interaction of the charmonium states with nuclear matter has to be described by partonic degrees of freedom, because in that kinematic domain the formation time is much larger than the nuclear radii. The understanding of this region will be crucial for the interpretation of the data of the future heavy ion colliders RHIC and LHC.

Diffraction at HERA, Color Opacity and Nuclear Shadowing

The QCD factorization theorem for diffractive processes in DIS is used to derive formulae for the leading twist contribution to the nuclear shadowing of parton distributions in the low thickness limit. Based on the current analyzes of diffraction at HERA we find that the average strength of the interactions which govern diffraction in the gluon sector at $x \le 10^{-3}, Q_0=2 GeV$ is ~50 mb. This is 3 times larger than in the quark sector and suggests that applicability of DGLAP approximation requires significantly larger $Q_0$ in the gluon sector. We use this information to estimate quark and gluon shadowing for heavy nuclei and to calculate its$Q^2$ depen- dence. For A~200 the amount of the gluon shadowing: $G_A/AG_N\sim 0.25-0.4$ at $x<10^{-3},Q=2GeV$ is sensitive to the probability of the small size configurations within wave function of the gluon "partonometer" at the $Q_0$ scale. At this scale for $A\sim 200$ the nonperturbative contribution to the gluon density is reduced by a factor of 4-5 at $x \le 10^{-3}$ unmasking PQCD physics in the gluon distribution of heavy nuclei. Such shadowing would strongly modify the first stage of the heavy ion collisions at LHC, and would lead to large color opacity effects in $eA$ collisions at x<0.001. The leading twist contribution to the cross section of the coherent $J/ψ$ production off $A\ge 12$ nuclei at $\sqrt s \ge 70$ GeV is strongly reduced as compared to the naive color transparency expectations. The Gribov black body limit for $F_{2A}(x,Q^2)$ is extended to the case of the gluon distributions in nuclei and shown to be relevant for the HERA kinematics of $eA$ collisions. Properties of the final states are also briefly discussed.

Single spin asymmetry in DVCS

In the following note, we will present an estimation of the single spin asymmetry in deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) which directly allows one to test predictions of the ratio of the imaginary part of the amplitude in DIS to DVCS, as well as access the skewed parton distributions at small $x$ in the DGLAP region. We find it to be large for the HERA kinematics to be accessible in forthcoming runs with polarized electrons.

Diffractive Exclusive Photon Production in DIS at HERA

We demonstrate that perturbative QCD allows one to calculate the absolute cross section of diffractive exclusive production of photons at large $Q^2$ at HERA, while the aligned jet model allows one to estimate the cross section for intermediate $Q^2 \sim 2 GeV^2$. Furthermore, we find that the imaginary part of the amplitude for the production of real photons is larger than the imaginary part of the corresponding DIS amplitude by about a factor of 2, leading to the prediction of a significant counting rate for the current generation of experiments at HERA. We also find a large azimuthal angle asymmetry in $ep$ scattering for HERA kinematics which allows one to directly measure the real part of the DVCS amplitude and hence the nondiagonal parton distributions.

Diffractive Photoproduction of $Υ$ at HERA

Predictions for the diffractive photoproduction of the $Υ$-family at HERA energies, within the framework of the analysis by Frankfurt, Koepf and Strikman, are presented. Two novel effects lead to a significant enhancement of the original calculation: the non-diagonal (or skewed) kinematics, calculated to leading-log($Q^2$) accuracy, and the large magnitude of the real part of the amplitude. The resultant cross sections are found to agree fairly well with recent preliminary data from ZEUS and H1. A strong correlation between the mass of the diffractively produced state and the energy dependence of the cross section is found. In particular, a considerably stronger rise in energy is predicted than that found in $J/ψ$-production.

Nuclear effects in $g_{1A}(x,Q^2)$ at small $x$ in deep inelastic scattering on $^7$Li and $^3$He

We suggest to use polarized nuclear targets of $^7$Li and $^3$He to study nuclear effects in the spin dependent structure functions $g_{1A}(x,Q^2)$. These effects are expected to be enhanced by a factor of two as compared to the unpolarized targets. We predict a significant $x$ dependence at $10^{-4} ÷10^{-3} \leq x \leq 0.2$ of $g_{1A}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}(x,Q^2)$ due to nuclear shadowing and nuclear enhancement. The effect of nuclear shadowing at $x \approx 10^{-3}$ is of an order of 16% for $g_{1A=7}^{n.s. 3/2}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}^{n.s.}(x,Q^2)$ and 10% for $g_{1A=3}^{n.s}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}^{n.s.}(x,Q^2)$. By imposing the requirement that the Bjorken sum rule is satisfied we model the effect of enhancement. We find the effect of enhancement at $x \approx 0.125 (0.15)$ to be of an order of $20 (55)%$ for $g_{1A=7}^{n.s. 3/2}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}^{n.s.}(x,Q^2)$ and $14 (40)%$ for $g_{1A=3}^{n.s}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}^{n.s.}(x,Q^2)$, if enhancement occupies the region $0.05 \leq x \leq 0.2$ ($0.1 \leq x \leq 0.2$). We predict a 2% effect in the difference of the scattering cross sections of deep inelastic scattering of an unpolarized projectile off $^7$Li with $M_{J}$=3/2 and $M_{J}$=1/2. We also show explicitly that the many-nucleon description of deep inelastic scattering off $^7$Li becomes invalid in the enhancement region $0.05 < x \leq 0.2$.

Diffractive production of charm and gluon nuclear shadowing

We evaluate nuclear shadowing of the total cross section of charm particles production in DIS within the framework of the Gribov theory of nuclear shadowing using as input the recent QCD Pomeron parton density analysis of the HERA diffractive data. Assuming that the QCD factorization theorem is applicable to the charm production off nuclei we also calculate shadowing of the gluon densities in nuclei and find it sufficiently larg for heavy nuclei: $G_{A\sim 200}(x,Q^2)/AG_N(x,Q^2) \sim 0.45-0.5 \cdot (A/200)^{-0.15}$ for $x \sim 10^{-3÷-4}, Q^2 \sim 10 ÷40 GeV^2$ to influence significantly the physics of heavy ion collisions at LHC. We also discuss some properties of the final states for $γ^*A $ processes dominated by the scattering off small $x$ gluons like the high $p_t$ jet and charm production.

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering at HERA - A Probe of Asymptotia

We demonstrate that the measurement of an azimuthal angle asymmetry in deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) at HERA energies, is experimentally feasible and allows one to determine for the first time the ratio $η$, of the real to imaginary part of the DIS amplitude. We further show that such a measurement would discriminate between different scenarios of the energy dependence of $F_2(x,Q^2)$ at energies beyond those reachable at HERA.

Hard exclusive pseudoscalar meson electroproduction and spin structure of a nucleon

The amplitude for hard exclusive pseudoscalar meson electroproduction off nucleon (nuclear) targets is computed in QCD within the leading $α_s \ln {Q^2/λ_{QCD}^{2}}$ approximation. We show that the distribution of recoil nucleons depends strongly on the angle between the momentum of the recoil nucleon and the polarization vector of the target (or outgoing nucleon). This dependence is especially sensitive to the spin flip skewed parton distribution (SPD) $\widetilde E$. We argue also that the scaling for this spin asymmetry sets in at lower Q^2 than that for the absolute cross section. Basing on the chiral quark-soliton model of the nucleon we estimate quantitatively the spin asymmetry. In the case of pi+ production this asymmetry is dominated at small t by the contribution of the pion pole in the isovector SPD $\widetilde E$ as required by PCAC. In the case of K0 production off a proton we find a large enhancement of the cross section as compared to the case of pi0 production. For the forward production of neutral pseudoscalar mesons off a deuteron target we find the cross section should be zero for the zero deuteron helicity (along the $γ^*D$ direction). We consider also cross sections of quasielastic processes off nuclei including the feasibility to implant K+,rho-mesons into nuclear volume.

J/psi suppression in heavy ion collisions - interplay of hard and soft QCD processes

We study J/psi suppression in AB collisions assuming that the charmonium states evolve from small, color transparent configurations. Their interaction with nucleons and nonequilibrated, secondary hadrons is simulated using the microscopic model UrQMD. The Drell-Yan lepton pair yield and the J/psi/Drell-Yan ratio are calculated as a function of the neutral transverse energy in Pb+Pb collisions at 160 GeV and found to be in reasonable agreement with existing data.

N -> Delta DVCS, exclusive DIS processes and skewed quark distributions in large N_c limit

We evaluate the amplitude of Bethe-Heitler process: γ^* p -> γΔ^+ -electron bremsstrahlung of photon accompanied by the excitation of Δ$ isobar. We show that this background is suppressed at small momentum transfer squared t to a proton relative to that for γ^* p -> γp and γ^* p\to -> Δ^+ - DVCS processes. From experimental point of view, this means that N -> N and N -> Δskewed quark distributions (SQD's) might be measurable at small momentum transfer. Several implications and applications of the QCD factorization theorem for the processes γ_{L}^* + p -> h_f +h_s are discussed where h_f - the particle produced along photon momentum $\vec q$ maybe either a meson or a baryon. We discuss also t dependence of DVCS and exclusive meson production as the practical criteria to distinguish between soft and hard regime. Basing on the large-N_c picture of the nucleon as a soliton of the effective chiral Lagrangian we derive relations between N -> N and N ->ΔSQD's which can be used to estimate amplitude of N -> ΔDVCS .

J/Ψproduction, $χ$ polarization and Color Fluctuations

The hard contributions to the heavy quarkonium-nucleon cross sections are calculated based on the QCD factorization theorem and the nonrelativistic quarkonium model. We evaluate the nonperturbative part of these cross sections which dominates at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}\approx 20$ GeV at the Cern Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and becomes a correction at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}\approx 6$ TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). $\J$ production at the CERN SPS is well described by hard QCD, when the larger absorption cross sections of the $χ$ states predicted by QCD are taken into account. We predict an $A$-dependent polarization of the $χ$ states. The expansion of small wave packets is discussed.

QCD - looking forward

We outline theoretical ideas on the soft and hard dynamics of strong high-energy interactions and discuss promising directions for future high-energy experimental investigations including the ones which would allow one to reveal the three-dimensional structure of QCD bound states, investigate the onset of regime of large parton densities, and observe the violation of the DGLAP evolution equation. We emphasize that many qualitatively new phenomena should be present for the forward kinematics both in electron-nucleon(nucleus) collisions at HERA and in $pp, pA$ collisions at LHC.

Soft Neutron Production in DIS: a Window to the Final State Interactions

Recently E-665 reported the first measurement of soft ($E_n \le 10 $MeV) neutron production in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) off nuclei. We report the first theoretical analysis of the data. We find that the observed cross section can be quantitatively explained as due to the final state interactions (FSI) of low energy nucleons ($E_N \sim 200-400 MeV$) produced in the elementary $μN$ interactions. We argue that the data indicate strong a suppression of the FSI's of fast partons (hadrons) in DIS at high energies, and that studies of the soft neutron production would provide a new sensitive probe of the dynamics of FSI's in DIS both at fixed target energies and at the HERA $eA$ collider.

Nondiagonal Parton Distributions in the Leading Logarithmic Approximation

In this paper we make predictions for nondiagonal parton distributions in a proton in the LLA. We calculate the DGLAP-type evolution kernels in the LLA, solve the nondiagonal GLAP evolution equations with a modified version of the CTEQ-package and comment on the range of applicability of the LLA in the asymmetric regime. We show that the nondiagonal gluon distribution $g(x_{1},x_{2},t,μ^2)$ can be well approximated at small $x$ by the conventional gluon density $xG(x,μ^2)$.
