Observation of Intensity-Intensity Correlation Speckle Patterns with Thermal Light

In traditional Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) schemes, the thermal intensity-intensity correlations are phase insensitive. Here we propose a modified HBT scheme with phase conjugation to demonstrate the phase-sensitive and nonfactorizable features for thermal intensity-intensity correlation speckle. Our scheme leads to results that are similar to those of the two-photon speckle. We discuss the possibility of the experimental realization. The results provide us a deeper insight of the thermal correlations and may lead to more significant applications in imaging and speckle technologies.

Ultrabroadband nonreciprocal transverse energy flow of light in linear passive photonic circuits

Using a technique, analogous to coherent population trapping in an atomic system, we propose schemes to create transverse light propagation violating left-right symmetry in a photonic circuit consisting of three coupled waveguides. The frequency windows for the symmetry breaking of the left-right energy flow span over 80 nm. Our proposed system only uses linear passive optical materials and is easy to integrate on a chip.

The Generation of Super-Resolving Single-Photon Path-Entangled State

In this paper, we propose two protocols for generating super-resolving \textit{single-photon} path-entangled states from general maximally path-entangled N00N states. We also show that both protocols generate the desired state with different probabilities depending on the type of detectors being used. Such super-resolving single-photon path-entangled states preserve high resolving power but lack the requirement of a multi-photon absorbing resist, which makes this state a perfect candidate for quantum lithography.

Goos-Hänchen Shifts of Partially Coherent Light Fields

We investigate the Goos-Hänchen (GH) shifts of partially coherent fields (PCFs) by using the theory of coherence. We derive a formal expression for the GH shifts of PCFs in terms of Mercer's expansion, and then clearly demonstrate the dependence of the GH shift of each mode of PCFs on spatial coherence and beam width. We discuss the effect of spatial coherence on the resultant GH shifts, especially for the cases near the critical angles, such as totally reflection angle.

Past of a quantum particle and weak measurement

We present an analysis of a double Mach-Zehnder interferometer in which an ensemble of identical pre- and postselected particles leave a weak trace. A knowledge of the weak value partially destroys the quantum interference. The results, contrary to some recent claims, are in accordance with the usual quantum mechanical expectations.

Protocol for direct counterfactual quantum communication

It has long been assumed in physics that for information to travel between two parties in empty space, "Alice" and "Bob", physical particles have to travel between them. Here, using the "chained" quantum Zeno effect, we show how, in the ideal asymptotic limit, information can be transferred between Alice and Bob without any physical particles traveling between them.

Comment on "Spatial Coherence and Optical Beam Shifts"

This comment is to show that our simulation data, based on our theory and method in Ref. [J. Phys. B 41, 055401 (2008)], are also in agreement with the experimental data presented for $D_{p}-D_{s}$ in Ref. [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{109}, 213901 (2012)]. We also demonstrate how to show the effect of spatial coherence on the GH shifts in this comment, therefore we disagree with the claims in Ref. [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{109}, 213901 (2012)].

Higher order wave-particle duality

The complementarity of single-photon's particle-like and wave-like behaviors can be described by the inequality $D^2+V^2 \leq 1$, with $D$ being the path distinguishability and $V$ being the fringe visibility. In this paper, we generalize this duality relation to multi-photon case, where two new concepts, higher order distinguishability and higher order fringe visibility, are introduced to quantify the higher order particle-like and wave-like behaviors of multi-photons.

Protecting quantum entanglement from amplitude damping

Quantum entanglement is a critical resource for quantum information and quantum computation. However, entanglement of a quantum system is subjected to change due to the interaction with the environment. One typical result of the interaction is the amplitude damping that usually results in the reduction of the entanglement. Here we propose a protocol to protect quantum entanglement from the amplitude damping by applying Hadamard and CNOT gates. As opposed to some recently studied methods, the scheme presented here does not require weak measurement in the reversal process, leading to a faster recovery of entanglement. We propose a possible experimental implementation based on linear optical system.

Accurate phase measurement with classical light

In this paper we investigate whether it is in general possible to substitute maximally path-entangled states, namely NOON-states by classical light in a Doppleron-type resonant multiphoton detection processes by studying adaptive phase measurement with classical light. We show that multiphoton detection probability using classical light coincides with that of NOON-states and the multiphoton absorbtion rate is not hindered by the spatially unconstrained photons of the classical light in our scheme. We prove that the optimal phase variance with classical light can be achieved and scales the same as that using NOON-states.

Noise and deviation effects in a bichromatic Raman white light cavity

We analyze the effects of noise and parameter deviations in a bichromatic Raman type white light cavity, with potential applications in precision measurements such as gravitational wave detection. The results show that the dispersion variation induced by parameter deviation can be controlled within $10^{-4}$. The laser phase noise decreases the dispersion magnitude while the amplitude noise increases it. Although we can always adjust the parameters to satisfy the white light condition, both noises make the cavity transmission curve uneven.

Entanglement criteria and nonlocality for multi-mode continuous variable systems

We demonstrate how to efficiently derive a broad class of inequalities for entanglement detection in multi-mode continuous variable systems. The separability conditions are established from partial transposition (PT) in combination with several distinct necessary conditions for a quantum physical state, which include previously established inequalities as special cases. Remarkably, our method enables us to support Peres' conjecture to its full generality within the framework of Cavalcanti-Foster-Reid-Drummond multipartite Bell inequality [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99}, 210405 (2007)] that the nonlocality necessarily implies negative PT entangled states.

Entanglement of Gaussian states using beam splitter

We study an experimental scheme to generate Gaussian two-mode entangled states via beam splitter. Specifically, we consider a nonclassical Gaussian state (squeezed state) and a thermal state as two input modes, and evaluate the degree of entanglement at the output. Experimental conditions to generate entangled outputs are completely identified and the critical thermal noise to destroy entanglement is analytically obtained. By doing so, we discuss the possibility to link the resistance to noise in entanglement generation with the degree of single-mode nonclassicality.

Uncertainty inequalities as entanglement criteria for negative partial-transpose states

In this Letter, we show that the fulfillment of uncertainty relations is a sufficient criterion for a quantum-mechanically permissible state. We specifically construct two pseudo-spin observables for an arbitrary non-positive Hermitian matrix whose uncertainty relation is violated. This method enables us to systematically derive separability conditions for all negative partial-transpose states in experimentally accessible forms. In particular, generalized entanglement criteria are derived from the Schrodinger-Robertson inequalities for bipartite continuous-variable states.

Hanbury Brown-Twiss effect and thermal light ghost imaging

We show that the essential physics of the Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) and the thermal light ghost imaging experiments is the same, i.e., due to the intensity fluctuations of the thermal light. However, in the ghost imaging experiments, a large number of bits information needs to be treated together, whereas in the HBT there is only one bit information required to be obtained. In the HBT experiment far field is used for the purpose of easy detection, while in the ghost image experiment near (or not-far) field is used for good quality image.

Proposal for direct measurement of concurrence via visibility in a cavity QED system

An experimental scheme is proposed that allows direct measurement of the concurrence of a two-qubit cavity system. It is based on the cavity-QED technology using atoms as flying qubits and relies on the identity of the two-particle visibility of the atomic probability with the concurrence of the cavity system. The scheme works for any arbitrary pure initial state of the two-qubit cavity system.

Optical imaging beyond the diffraction limit via dark states

We study the possibility of creating spatial patterns having subwavelength size by using the so-called dark states formed by the interaction between atoms and optical fields. These optical fields have a specified spatial distribution. Our experiments in Rb vapor display spatial patterns that are smaller than the length determined by the diffraction limit of the optical system used in the experiment. This approach may have applications to interference lithography and might be used in coherent Raman spectroscopy to create patterns with subwavelength spatial resolution.
