Production of axial-vector D_sJ in e+e- annihilation

If one of the recently discovered charmed-strange mesons (D_sJ(2317)) is the 0+ state of cs-bar, the other (D_sJ(2460)) is most likely the 1+ state with j=1/2. They could be produced in e+e- annihilation by fragmentation from cc-bar jets or as decay products of B mesons. If one analyzes the cc-bar jet events and the B decay events separately, one will have a direct test as to whether D_sJ(2460) is the j=1/2 state or not, how much D_sJ(2460) is mixed with the j=3/2 state, and whether the four-quark interpretation is viable.

A Chandra detection of diffuse hard X-ray emission associated with the lobes of the radio galaxy 3C 452

An 80 ksec Chandra ACIS observation of the radio galaxy 3C 452 is reported. A diffuse X-ray emission associated with the lobes has been detected with high statistical significance, together with the X-ray nucleus of the host galaxy. The 0.5--5 keV ACIS spectrum of the diffuse emission is described by a two-component model, consisting of a soft thermal plasma emission from the host galaxy halo and a hard non-thermal power-law component. The hard component is ascribed to the inverse Comptonization of cosmic microwave background photons by the synchrotron emitting electrons in the lobes, because its spectral energy index, 0.68+-0.28, is consistent with the radio synchrotron index, 0.78. These results reveal a significant electron dominance in the lobes. The electrons are inferred to have a relatively uniform distribution, while the magnetic field is compressed toward the lobe periphery.

Lambda hyperon as helicity analyzer of s quark in B decay

We explore how well one can probe the s quark chirality of the fundamental weak interaction of nonleptonic B decay using the spin-analyzing property of the Lambda hyperon. We present the prediction of the Standard Model as quantitatively as possible in a perturbative QCD picture avoiding detailed form-factor calculation involving quark mass corrections. A clean test of chirality will be possible with the decay B-bar to Lambda X.

Quasi-particle Density in Sr2RuO4 Probed by means of the Phonon Thermal Conductivity

The thermal conductivity of Sr2RuO4 along the least conducting direction perpendicular to the RuO2 plane has been studied down to 0.3 K. In this configuration the phonons remain the dominant heat carriers down to the lowest temperature, and their conductivity in the normal state is determined by the scattering on conduction electrons. We show that the phonon mean free path in the superconducting state is sensitive to the density of the quasi-particles in the bulk. An unusual magnetic field dependence of the phonon thermal conductivity is ascribed to the anisotropic superconducting gap structure in Sr2RuO4.

Universal Heat Transport in Sr2RuO4

We present the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity kappa(T) of the unconventional superconductor Sr_2RuO_4 down to low temperatures (100 mK). In T -> 0 K limit we found a finite residual term in kappa/T, providing clear evidence for the superconducting state with an unconventional pairing. The residual term remains unchanged for samples with different T_c, demonstrating the universal character of heat transport in this spin-triplet superconductor. The low-temperature behavior of kappa suggests the strong impurity scattering with a phase shift close to pi/2. A criterion for the observation of universality is experimentally deduced.

Helicity conservation in inclusive nonleptonic decay B to VX: Test of long-distance final state interaction

The polarization measurement in the inclusive B decay provides us with a simple test of how much the long-distance final-state interaction takes place as the energy of the observed meson varies in the final state. We give the expectation of the perturbative QCD for the energy dependence of the helicity fractions in a semiquantitative form. Experiment will tell us for which decay processes the perturbative calculation should be applicable.

Search of 1^P_1 charmonium in B decay

While experiment produced a candidate for the 1^P_1 chamonium in the past, it still requires a confirmation. Given the recent progress in the exclusive B decay into charmonia, we now have an opportunity to detect this charmonium (h_c) by measuring the final state of the cascade decay B \to h_c K/K^* \to γη_c K/K^*. Confirmation of h_c may turn out to be much easier in the B decay than at charm factories though one will have to work a little harder for a high precision in mass determination.

Helicity conservation and factorization-suppressed charmless B decays

Toward the goal of extracting the weak angle alpha, the decay B^0/B^0-bar to a_0^{+/-}pi^{-/+} was recently measured. The decay B^0 to a_0^+pi^- is not only forbidden in the factorization limit of the tree interaction, but also strongly suppressed for the penguin interaction if short-distance QCD dominates. This makes extraction of alpha very difficult from a^{+/-}π^{-/+}. We examine the simlar factorization-suppressed decays, in particular, B^0\to b_1^+pi^-. The prospect of obtaining alpha is even less promising with b_1^{+/-}pi^{-/+}. To probe how well the short-distance dominance works, we emphasize importance of testing helicity conservation in the charmless B decays with spins.

Elusive vector glueball

If the vector glueball exists in the mass range that theory suggests, its resonance production cross section can be seen in e+e- annihilation only if the decay width is very narrow (< a few MeV). Otherwise it willbe observed only indirectly through its mixing with psi(2S). A few tests of the glueball-psi' mixing are proposed for future charm factories.

Anisotropy of magnetothermal conductivity in Sr2RuO4

The dependence of in-plane and interplane thermal conductivities of Sr2RuO4 on temperature, as well as magnetic field strength and orientation, is reported. We found no notable anisotropy in the thermal conductivity for the magnetic field rotation parallel to the conducting plane in the whole range of experimental temperatures and fields, except in the vicinity of the upper critical field Hc2, where the anisotropy of the Hc2 itself plays a dominant role. This finding imposes strong constraints on the possible models of superconductivity in Sr2RuO4 and supports the existence of a superconducting gap with a line of nodes running orthogonal to the Fermi surface cylinder.

Superconducting Gap Structure of Spin-Triplet Superconductor Sr_2RuO_4 Studied by Thermal Conductivity

To clarify the superconducting gap structure of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr_2RuO_4, the in-plane thermal conductivity has been measured as a function of relative orientations of the thermal flow, the crystal axes, and a magnetic field rotating within the 2D RuO_2 planes. The in-plane variation of the thermal conductivity is incompatible with any model with line nodes vertical to the 2D planes and indicates the existence of horizontal nodes. These results place strong constraints on models that attempt to explain the mechanism of the triplet superconductivity.

A possible hadronic excess in psi(2S) decay and rho-pi puzzle

We examine the so-called rho-pi puzzle of the psi(2S) decay by incorporating two inputs: One is the relative phase between the one-photon and the gluon decay amplitude, and the other is a possible anomaly in the inclusive nonelectromagnetic decay rate of psi(2S). We propose the possibility that in the psi(2S) decay a hadronic decay process of long distance origin is important in addition to the short-distance decay process. The amplitude of this additional process should nearly cancel the three-gluon amplitude in the exclusive psi(2S)---> 1-0- and turn the sum dominantly real in contrast to the J/psi decay. We present general consequences of this mechanism and then briefly look into two models which possibly explain the course of this additional amplitude.

Selection rules in three-body B decay from factorization

Extending the dynamics underlying the factorization calculation of two-body decays, we propose simple selection rules for nonresonant three-body B decays. We predict, for instance, that in the Dalitz plot of B^0-->D^0-barπ^+π^-, practically no events should be found in the corner of E(π^+) < Λ_{QCD} as compared with the corner of E(π^-) < Λ_{QCD}. We also predict that there should be very few three-body decay events with a soft meson resonance and two energetic mesons or meson resonances. The selection rules are quite different from the soft pion theorem, since they apply to different kinematical regions. For B^0 -->D^0-barπ^+π^-, the latter predicts that the decay matrix element vanishes in the zero-four-momentum limit of π^+ instead of π^-. Since this marked difference from the soft pion theorem is directly related to the issue of short-distance QCD dominance in the FSI of two-body B decays, experimental test of the selection rules will shed light on strong interaction dynamics of B decay.

Final state interaction in heavy hadron decay

I present a critical account of the final-state interaction (FSI) in two-body B decays from viewpoint of the hadron picture. I emphasize that the phase and the magnitude of decay amplitude are related to each other by a dispersion relation. In a model phase of FSI motivated by experiment, I illustrate how much the magnitude of amplitude can deviate from its factorization value by the FSI.

Final state interaction phase in B decays

From an estimate of the meson-meson inelastic scatterin at 5 GeV it is concluded that a typical strong phase in B decays to two mesons is of order of 20 degrees. For a particular final state an estimate of the phase depends on whether that state is more or less probable as a final state compared to those states to which it is connected by the strong interaction S matrix.

A large final-state interaction in the 0-0- decays of J/psi

In view of important implications in the B decay, the 0-0- decay modes of J/psi are analyzed with broken flavor SU(3) symmetry in search for long-distance final-state interactions. If we impose one mild theoretical constraint on the electromagnetic form factors, we find that a large phase difference of final-state interactions is strongly favored between the one-photon and the gluon decay amplitudes. Measurement of the π+π- and K+K- cross sections off the J/psi peak in e+e- annihilation can settle the issue without recourse to theory.
