Scaling and universality in two dimensions: three-body bound states with short-ranged interactions

The momentum space zero-range model is used to investigate universal properties of three interacting particles confined to two dimensions. The pertinent equations are first formulated for a system of two identical and one distinct particle and the two different two-body subsystems are characterized by two-body energies and masses. The three-body energy in units of one of the two-body energies is a universal function of the other two-body energy and the mass ratio. We derive convenient analytical formulae for calculations of the three-body energy as function of these two independent parameters and exhibit the results as universal curves. In particular, we show that the three-body system can have any number of stable bound states. When the mass ratio of the distinct to identical particles is greater than 0.22 we find that at most two stable bound states exist, while for two heavy and one light mass an increasing number of bound states is possible. The specific number of stable bound states depends on the ratio of two-body bound state energies and on the mass ratio and we map out an energy-mass phase-diagram of the number of stable bound states. Realizable systems of both fermions and bosons are discussed in this framework.

Constraints on two-neutron separation energy in the Borromean $^{22}$C nucleus

The recently extracted matter radius of carbon isotope $^{22}$C allows us to estimate the mean-square distance of a halo neutron with respect to the center-of-mass of this nucleus. By considering this information, we suggest an energy region for an experimental investigation of the unbound $^{21}$C virtual state. Our analysis, in a renormalized zero-ranged three-body model, also indicates that the two-neutron separation energy in $^{22}$C is expected to be found below $\sim$0.4~MeV, where the $^{22}$C is approximated by a Borromean configuration with a pointlike $^{20}$C and two $s$-wave halo neutrons. A virtual-state energy of $^{21}$C close to zero, would make the $^{22}$C, within Borromean nuclei configurations, the most promising candidate to present an excited bound Efimov state or a continuum three-body resonance.

Universality and scaling limit of weakly-bound tetramers

The occurrence of a new limit cycle in few-body physics, expressing a universal scaling function relating the binding energies of two consecutive tetramer states, is revealed, considering a renormalized zero-range two-body interaction applied to four identical bosons. The tetramer energy spectrum is obtained when adding a boson to an Efimov bound state with energy $B_3$ in the unitary limit (for zero two-body binding, or infinite two-body scattering length). Each excited $N-$th tetramer energy $B_4^{(N)}$ is shown to slide along a scaling function as a short-range four-body scale is changed, emerging from the 3+1 threshold for a universal ratio $B_4^ {(N)}/B_3 \simeq 4.6$, which does not depend on $N$. The new scale can also be revealed by a resonance in the atom-trimer recombination process.

Universality of Brunnian ($N$-body Borromean) four and five-body systems

We compute binding energies and root mean square radii for weakly bound systems of $N=4$ and $5$ identical bosons. Ground and first excited states of an $N$-body system appear below the threshold for binding the system with $N-1$ particles. Their root mean square radii approach constants in the limit of weak binding. Their probability distributions are on average located in non-classical regions of space which result in universal structures. Radii decrease with increasing particle number. The ground states for more than five particles are probably non-universal whereas excited states may be universal.

Double resonances in Borromean heteronuclear triatomic systems

We investigate the occurrence of Borromean three-body continuum s-wave resonances, in an $ααβ$ system for large negative two-body scattering lengths. The energy and width are determined by a scaling function with arguments given by energy ratios of the two-body virtual state subsystem energies with the shallowest three-body bound state. The Borromean continuum resonances emerging from Efimov states present a peculiar behavior for trapped ultracold atoms near a Feshbach resonance: two resonances with equal energies at different values of the scattering length. The corresponding three-body recombination peaks should merge as the temperature is raised, with one moving towards lower values of the scattering length as the other moves to larger values.

The force, power and energy of the 100 meter sprint

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Usain Bolt broke the world record for the 100 m sprint. Just one year later, at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics in Berlin he broke it again. A few months after Beijing, Eriksen et al. studied Bolt's performance and predicted that Bolt could have run about one-tenth of a second faster, which was confirmed in Berlin. In this paper we extend the analysis of Eriksen et al. to model Bolt's velocity time-dependence for the Beijing 2008 and Berlin 2009 records. We deduce the maximum force, the maximum power, and the total mechanical energy produced by Bolt in both races. Surprisingly, we conclude that all of these values were smaller in 2009 than in 2008.

Neutron$-^{19}$C scattering near an Efimov state

The low-energy neutron$-^{19}$C scattering in a neutron-neutron-core model is studied with large scattering lengths near the conditions for the appearance of an Efimov state. We show that the real part of the elastic $s-$wave phase-shift ($δ_0^R$) presents a zero, or a pole in $ k\cotδ_0^{R}$, when the system has an Efimov excited or virtual state. More precisely the pole scales with the energy of the Efimov state (bound or virtual). We perform calculations in the limit of large scattering lengths, disregarding the interaction range, within a renormalized zero-range approach using subtracted equations. It is also presented a brief discussion of these findings in the context of ultracold atom physics with tunable scattering lengths.

Trajectory of virtual, bound and resonant Efimov states

The pole trajectory of Efimov states for a three-body $ααβ$ system with $αα$ unbound and $αβ$ bound is calculated using a zero-range Dirac-$δ$ potential. It is showed that a three-body bound state turns into a virtual one by increasing the $αβ$ binding energy. This result is consistent with previous results for three equal mass particles. The present approach considers the $n-n-^{18}C$ halo nucleus. However, the results have good perspective to be tested and applied in ultracold atomic systems, where one can realize such three-body configuration with tunable two-body interaction.

Comment on "Efimov States and their Fano Resonances in a Neutron-Rich Nucleus"

By introducing a mass asymmetry in a non-Borromean three-body system, without changing the energy relations, the virtual state pole cannot move from the negative real axis of the complex energy plane (with nonzero width) and become a resonance, because the analytical structure of the unitarity cuts remains the same.

Trajectory of neutron$-$neutron$-^{18}C$ excited three-body state

The trajectory of the first excited Efimov state is investigated by using a renormalized zero-range three-body model for a system with two bound and one virtual two-body subsystems. The approach is applied to $n-n-^{18}$C, where the $n-n$ virtual energy and the three-body ground state are kept fixed. It is shown that such three-body excited state goes from a bound to a virtual state when the $n-^{18}$C binding energy is increased. Results obtained for the $n-^{19}$C elastic cross-section at low energies also show dominance of an $S-$matrix pole corresponding to a bound or virtual Efimov state. It is also presented a brief discussion of these findings in the context of ultracold atom physics with tunable scattering lengths.

Three-boson recombination at ultralow temperatures

The effects of trimer continuum resonances are considered in the three-body recombination rate of a Bose system at finite energies for large and negative two-body scattering lengths ($a$). The thermal average of the rate allows to apply our formula to Bose gases at ultra-low temperatures. We found a good quantitative description of the experimental three-body recombination length of cesium atoms to deeply bound molecules up to 500 nK. Consistent with the experimental data, the increase of the temperature moves the resonance peak of the three-body recombination rate to lower values of $|a|$ exhibiting a saturation behavior.

Four-boson scale near a Feshbach resonance

We show that an independent four-body momentum scale $μ_{(4)}$ drives the tetramer binding energy for fixed trimer energy (or three-body scale $μ_{(3)}$) and large scattering length ($a$). The three- and four-body forces from the one-channel reduction of the atomic interaction near a Feshbach resonance disentangle $μ_{(4)}$ and $μ_{(3)}$. The four-body independent scale is also manifested through a family of Tjon-lines, with slope given by $μ_{(4)}/μ_{(3)}$ for $a^{-1}=0$. There is the possibility of a new renormalization group limit cycle due to the new scale.

Understanding the tsunami with a simple model

In this paper, we use the approximation of shallow water waves (Margaritondo G 2005 Eur. J. Phys. 26 401) to understand the behaviour of a tsunami in a variable depth. We deduce the shallow water wave equation and the continuity equation that must be satisfied when a wave encounters a discontinuity in the sea depth. A short explanation about how the tsunami hit the west coast of India is given based on the refraction phenomenon. Our procedure also includes a simple numerical calculation suitable for undergraduate students in physics and engineering.

A doorway to Borromean halo nuclei: the Samba configuration

We exploit the possibility of new configurations in three-body halo nuclei - Samba type - (the neutron-core form a bound system) as a doorway to Borromean systems. The nuclei $^{12}$Be, $^{15}$B, $^{23}$N and $^{27}$F are of such nature, in particular $^{23}$N with a half-life of 37.7 s and a halo radius of 6.07 fm is an excellent example of Samba-halo configuration. The fusion below the barrier of the Samba halo nuclei with heavy targets could reveal the so far elusive enhancement and a dominance of one-neutron over two-neutron transfers, in contrast to what was found recently for the Borromean halo nucleus $^6$He + $^{238}$U.

Structure of exotic three-body systems

The classification of large halos formed by two identical particles and a core is systematically addressed according to interparticle distances. The root-mean-square distances between the constituents are described by universal scaling functions obtained from a renormalized zero-range model. Applications for halo nuclei, $^{11}$Li and $^{14}$Be, and for atomic $^4$He$_3$ are briefly discussed. The generalization to four-body systems is proposed.

A unified model for the long and high jump

A simple model based on the maximum energy that an athlete can produce in a small time interval is used to describe the high and long jump. Conservation of angular momentum is used to explain why an athlete should run horizontally to perform a vertical jump. Our results agree with world records.

Neutron-neutron correlation in the halo dissociation of light exotic nuclei

We present model results for the two-halo-neutron correlation functions, $C_{nn}$, for the dissociation process of light exotic nuclei modelled as two neutrons and a core. A minimum is predicted for $C_{nn}$ as a function of the relative momentum of the two neutrons, $p_{nn}$, due to the coherence of the neutrons in the halo and final state interaction. Studying the systems $^{14}$Be, $^{11}$Li and $^{6}$He within this model, we show that the numerical asymptotic limit, $C_{nn}\to 1$, occurs only for $p_{nn}\gtrsim$ 400 MeV$/c$, while such limit is reached for much lower values of $p_{nn}$ in an independent particle model as the one used in the analysis of recent experimental data. Our model is consistent with data once the experimental correlation function is appropriately normalized.

Triatomic continuum resonances for large negative scattering lengths

We study triatomic systems in the regime of large negative scattering lengths which may be more favorable for the formation of condensed trimers in trapped ultracold monoatomic gases as the competition with the weakly bound dimers is absent. The manipulation of the scattering length can turn an excited weakly bound Efimov trimer into a continuum resonance. Its energy and width are described by universal scaling functions written in terms of the scattering length and the binding energy, $B_3$, of the shallowest triatomic molecule. For $a^{-1}<-0.0297 \sqrt{m B_3/\hbar^2}$ the excited Efimov state turns into a continuum resonance.
