Intertwined Magnetic Dipolar and Electric Quadrupolar Correlations in the Pyrochlore Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$

We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the pyrochlore Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$, an exemplary realization of a material whose properties are dominated by competition between magnetic dipolar and electric quadrupolar correlations. The dipolar and quadrupolar correlations evolve over three distinct regimes that we characterize via heat capacity, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. In the first regime, above $T^*=1.1$ K, significant quadrupolar correlations lead to an intense inelastic mode that cannot be accounted for within a scenario with solely magnetic dipole-dipole correlations. The onset of extended dipole correlations occurs in the intermediate regime, between $T^*=1.1$ K and $T_c = 0.25$ K, with the formation of a collective paramagnetic state characterized by extended ferromagnetic canted spin ice domains. Here, long-range order is impeded not only by the usual frustration operating in classical spin ice systems, but also by a competition between dipolar and quadrupolar correlations. Finally, in the lowest temperature regime, below $T_c=0.25$ K, there is an abrupt and significant increase in the dipole ordered moment. The majority of the ordered moment remains tied up in the ferromagnetic spin ice-like state, but an additional $\mathbf{k}=(0,0,1)$ antiferromagnetic order parameter also develops. Simultaneously, the spectral weight of the inelastic mode, which is a proxy for the quadrupolar correlations, is observed to drop, indicating that dipole order ultimately wins out. Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ is therefore a remarkable platform to study intertwined dipolar and quadrupolar correlations in a magnetically frustrated system and provides important insights into the physics of the whole family of terbium pyrochlores.

Low frequency spin dynamics in XY quantum spin ice Yb$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$

The XY pyrochlore Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, with pseudo spin 1/2 at the Yb$^{3+}$ site, has been celebrated as potential host for the quantum spin ice state. The substitution of non-magnetic Ti with Pt gives Yb$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$, a system with remarkably similar magnetic properties. The large nuclear gyromagnetic ratio ($γ_{n}/2 π= 9.15$~MHz/T) of $^{195}$Pt makes Yb$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$ an ideal material for NMR investigation of its unconventional magnetic properties. Based on the $^{195}$Pt nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ and the magnetic specific heat $C_{p}$ measured in a broad range of magnetic field $B_{ext}$, we demonstrate that the field-induced magnon gap linearly decreases with $B_{ext}$ but additional low energy mode of spin excitations emerge below $\sim 0.5$~T.

Magneto-elastic induced vibronic bound state in the spin ice pyrochlore Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

The single ion physics of Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is well-understood to produce strong Ising anisotropy, which is an essential ingredient to its low-temperature spin ice state. We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ that reveal a clear inconsistency with its established single ion Hamiltonian. Specifically, we show that a crystal field doublet near 60~meV is split by approximately 3~meV. Furthermore, this crystal field splitting is not isolated to Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ but can also be found in its chemical pressure analogs, Ho$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$. We demonstrate that the origin of this effect is a vibronic bound state, resulting from the entanglement of a phonon and crystal field excitation. We derive the microscopic Hamiltonian that describes the magneto-elastic coupling and provides a quantitative description of the inelastic neutron spectra.

Phase Competition in the Palmer-Chalker XY Pyrochlore Er$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$

We report neutron scattering measurements on Er$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$, a new addition to the XY family of frustrated pyrochlore magnets. Symmetry analysis of our elastic scattering data shows that Er$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$ is the first XY pyrochlore to order into the $k=0$, $Γ_7$ magnetic structure (the Palmer-Chalker state), at $T_N = 0.38$ K. This contrasts with its sister XY pyrochlore antiferromagnets Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Er$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$, both of which order into $Γ_5$ magnetic structures at much higher temperatures, $T_N=1.2$ K and $1.4$ K, respectively. In this temperature range, the magnetic heat capacity of Er$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$ contains a broad anomaly centered at $T^*=1.5$ K. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal that this broad heat capacity anomaly sets the temperature scale for strong short-range spin fluctuations. Below $T_N = 0.38$ K, Er$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$ displays a gapped spin wave spectrum with an intense, flat band of excitations at lower energy and a weak, diffusive band of excitations at higher energy. The flat band is well-described by classical spin wave calculations, but these calculations also predict sharp dispersive branches at higher energy, a striking discrepancy with the experimental data. This, in concert with the strong suppression of $T_N$, is attributable to enhanced quantum fluctuations due to phase competition between the $Γ_7$ and $Γ_5$ states that border each other within a classically predicted phase diagram.

Relief of Frustration in the Heisenberg Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet Gd$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$

The gadolinium pyrochlores, Gd$_2B_2$O$_7$, are amongst the best realizations of antiferromagnetically coupled Heisenberg spins on a pyrochlore lattice. We present a magnetic characterization of Gd$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$, a unique member of this family. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation measurements show that Gd$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$ undergoes an antiferromagnetic ordering transition at $T_N = 1.6$ K. This transition is strongly first order, as indicated by the sharpness of the heat capacity anomaly, thermal hysteresis in the magnetic susceptibility, and a non-divergent relaxation rate in $μ$SR. The form of the heat capacity below $T_N$ suggests that the ground state is an anisotropic collinear antiferromagnet with an excitation spectrum that is gapped by 0.245(1) meV. The ordering temperature in Gd$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$, $T_N = 1.6$ K, is a substantial 160% increase from other gadolinium pyrochlores, which have been found to order at 1 K or lower. We attribute this enhancement in $T_N$ to the $B$-site cation, platinum, which, despite being non-magnetic, has a filled $5d$ $t_{2g}$ orbital and an empty $5d$ $e_g$ orbital that can facilitate superexchange. Thus, the magnetic frustration in Gd$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$ is partially "relieved", thereby promoting magnetic order.

Universal Dynamic Magnetism in Yb-Pyrochlores with Disparate Ground States

The ytterbium pyrochlore magnets, Yb2B2O7 (B = Sn, Ti, Ge) are well described by S_eff = 1/2 quantum spins decorating a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra and interacting via anisotropic exchange. Structurally, only the non-magnetic B-site cation, and hence, primarily the lattice parameter, is changing across the series. Nonetheless, a range of magnetic behaviors are observed: the low temperature magnetism in Yb2Ti2O7 and Yb2Sn2O7 has ferromagnetic character, while Yb2Ge2O7 displays an antiferromagnetically ordered Neel state at low temperatures. While the static properties of the ytterbium pyrochlores are distinct, inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal a common character to their exotic spin dynamics. All three ytterbium pyrochlores show a gapless continuum of spin excitations, resembling over-damped ferromagnetic spin waves at low Q. Furthermore, the specific heat of the series also follows a common form, with a broad, high-temperature anomaly followed by a sharp low-temperature anomaly at T_C or T_N. The novel spin dynamics we report correlate strongly with the broad specific heat anomaly only, remaining unchanged across the sharp anomaly. This result suggests that the primary order parameter in the ytterbium pyrochlores associated with the sharp anomaly is "hidden" and not simple magnetic dipole order.

XY Antiferromagnetic Ground State in the Effective S=1/2 Pyrochlore Yb2Ge2O7

We report neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation measurements (muSR) on the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Yb2Ge2O7. Inelastic neutron scattering was used to probe the transitions between crystal electric field levels, allowing us to determine the eigenvalues and eigenvectors appropriate to the J=7/2 Yb3+ ion in this environment. The crystal electric field ground state doublet in Yb2Ge2O7 corresponds primarily to m_J = +/- 1/2 with local XY anisotropy, consistent with an S_eff = 1/2 description for the Yb moments. muSR measurements reveal the presence of an ordering transition at T_N = 0.57 K with persistent weak dynamics in the ordered state. Finally, we present neutron diffraction measurements that reveal a clear phase transition to the k = (000) Gamma_5 ground state with an ordered magnetic moment of 0.3(1) mu_B per Yb ion. We compare and contrast this phenomenology with the low temperature behavior of Yb2Ti2O7 and Er2Ti2O7, the prototypical S_eff = 1/2 XY pyrochlore magnets.

Cu substitution effects on the local magnetic properties of Ba(Fe_[1-x]Cu_[x])2As2: a site-selective 75-As and 63-Cu NMR study

We take advantage of the site-selective nature of the $^{75}$As and $^{63}$Cu NMR techniques to probe the Cu substitution effects on the local magnetic properties of the FeAs planes in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. We show that the suppression of antiferromagnetic Fe spin fluctuations induced by Cu substitution is weaker than a naive expectation based on a simple rigid band picture, in which each Cu atom would donate 3 electrons to the FeAs planes. Comparison between $^{63}$Cu and $^{75}$As NMR data indicates that spin fluctuations are suppressed at the Cu and their neighboring Fe sites in the tetragonal phase, suggesting the strongly local nature of the Cu substitution effects. We attribute the absence of a large superconducting dome in the phase diagram of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ to the emergence of a nearly magnetically ordered FeAs planes under the presence of orthorhombic distortion.

Evidence for large electric polarization from collinear magnetism in TmMnO3

There has been tremendous research activity in the field of magneto-electric (ME) multiferroics after Kimura et al. [1] showed that antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric order coexist in orthorhom- bically distorted perovskite TbMnO3 and are strongly coupled. It is now generally accepted that ferroelectricity in TbMnO3 is induced by magnetic long range order that breaks the symmetry of the crystal and creates a polar axis [2]. One remaining key question is whether magnetic order can induce ferroelectric polarization that is as large as that of technologically useful materials. We show that ferroelectricity in orthorhombic (o) TmMnO3 is induced by collinear magnetic order, and that the lower limit for its electric polarization is larger than in previously investigated orthorhombic heavy rare-earth manganites. The temperature dependence of the lattice constants provides fur- ther evidence of large spin-lattice coupling effects. Our experiments suggest that the ferroelectric polarization in the orthorhombic perovskites with commensurate magnetic ground states could pass the 1 microC/cm2 threshold, as suggested by theory [3, 4].

Magnetic and charge transport properties of the Na-based Os oxide pyrochlore

Na-based osmium oxide pyrochlore was synthesized for the first time by an ion-exchange method. KOs2O6 was used as a host compound. Elelectron probe micro-analysis, synchrotron x-ray diffraction analysis, and thermo-gravimetric analysis confirmed its structure not as the beta-type but as the defect-type pyrochlore. The composition was identified as Na1.4Os2O6.H2O. Electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and magnetization measurements of the polycrystalline Na1.4Os2O6.H2O clarified absence of superconductivity above 2 K, being in contrast to what were found for the beta-pyrochlore AOs2O6 (A = Cs, Rb, K). Sommerfeld coefficient of 22 mJ K-2 mol-1 of Na1.4Os2O6.H2O was smallest among those of AOs2O6. A magnetic anomaly at ~57 K and possible associated magnetoresistance (+3.7 % at 2 K in 70 kOe) were found.

Room-temperature magnetocaloric effect in La0.7Sr0.3Mn1-xM'xO3 (M'=Al, Ti)

Magnetic entropy and adiabatic temperature changes in and above the room-temperature region has been measured for La0.7Sr0.3Mn1-xM'xO3 (M' = Al, Ti) by means of magnetization and heat capacity measurements in magnetic fields up to 6 T. The magnetocaloric effect becomes largest at the ferromagnetic ordering temperature Tc that is tuned to ~300 K by the substitution of Al or Ti for Mn. While the substitution of Al for Mn drastically reduces the entropy change, it extends considerably the working temperature span and improves the relative cooling power. The magnetocaloric effect seems to be only lightly affected by Ti substitution. Although manganites have been considered potential for magnetic refrigerants, the magnetocaloric effect in these materials is limited due to the existence of short-range ferromagnetic correlations above Tc.

Hadron-quark continuity induced by the axial anomaly in dense QCD

We investigate the interplay between the chiral and diquark condensates on the basis of the Ginzburg-Landau potential with QCD symmetry. We demonstrate that the axial anomaly drives a new critical point at low temperature in the QCD phase diagram and leads to a smooth crossover between the hadronic and color superconducting phases.

Thermal Phase Transitions and Gapless Quark Spectra in Quark Matter at High Density

Thermal color superconducting phase transitions in three-flavor quark matter at high baryon density are investigated in the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) approach. We constructed the GL potential near the boundary with a normal phase by taking into account nonzero quark masses, electric charge neutrality, and color charge neutrality. We found that the density of states averaged over paired quarks plays a crucial role in determining the phases near the boundary. By performing a weak coupling calculation of the parameters characterizing the GL potential terms of second order in the pairing gap, we show that three successive second-order phase transitions take place as the temperature increases: a modified color-flavor locked phase (ud, ds, and us pairings) -> a ``dSC'' phase (ud and ds pairings) -> an isoscalar pairing phase (ud pairing) -> a normal phase (no pairing). The Meissner masses of the gluons and the number of gapless quark modes are also studied analytically in each of these phases.

Melting Pattern of Diquark Condensates in Quark Matter

Thermal color superconducting phase transitions in high density three-flavor quark matter are investigated in the Ginzburg-Landau approach. Effects of nonzero strange quark mass, electric and color charge neutrality, and direct instantons are considered. Weak coupling calculations show that an interplay between the mass and electric neutrality effects near the critical temperature gives rise to three successive second-order phase transitions as the temperature increases: a modified color-flavor locked (mCFL) phase (ud, ds, and us pairings) -> a ``dSC'' phase (ud and ds pairings) -> an isoscalar pairing phase (ud pairing) -> a normal phase (no pairing). The dSC phase is novel in the sense that while all eight gluons are massive as in the mCFL phase, three out of nine quark quasiparticles are gapless.

Andreev reflection at QGP/CFL interface

In this letter we address the question of the phenomena of Andreev reflection between the cold quark-gluon plasma phase and CFL color superconductor. We show that there are two different types of reflections connected to the structure of the CFL phase. We also calculate the probability current at the interface and we show that it vanishes for energy of scattering quarks below the superconducting gap.

SUSY Breaking through Compactification

We propose a new mechanism of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The existence of extra dimensions with nontrivial topology plays an important role. We investigate new features resulting from this mechanism. One noteworthy feature is that there exists a phase in which the translational invariance for the compactified directions is broken spontaneously. The mechanism we propose also yields quite different vacuum structures for models with different global symmetries.

A New Mechanism of Spontaneous SUSY Breaking

We propose a new mechanism of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The existence of extra dimensions with nontrivial topology plays an important role. We investigate new features resulted from the mechanism in two simple supersymmetric Z_2 and U(1) models. One of remarkable features is that there exists a phase in which the translational invariance for the compactified directions is broken spontaneously, accompanying the breakdown of the supersymmetry. The mass spectrum of the models appeared in reduced dimensions is a full of variety, reflecting the highly nontrivial vacuum structure of the models. The Nambu-Goldstone bosons (fermions) associated with breakdown of symmetries are found in the mass spectrum. Our mechanism also yields quite different vacuum structures if models have different global symmetries.

Spontaneously Broken Translational Invariance of Compactified Space

We propose a mechanism to break the translational invariance of compactified space spontaneously. As a simple model, we study a real $ϕ^4$ model compactified on $M^{D-1}\otimes S^1$ in detail, where we impose a nontrivial boundary condition on $ϕ$ for the $S^1$-direction. It is shown that the translational invariance for the $S^1$-direction is spontaneously broken when the radius $R$ of $S^1$ becomes larger than a critical radius $R^*$ and also that the model behaves like a $ϕ^4$ model on a single kink background for $R \to \infty$. It is pointed out that spontaneous breakdown of translational invariance is accompanied by that of some global symmetries, in general, in our mechanism.
