Spin-1/2 Kagome Like Lattice in Volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2-H2O

A novel cuprate Volborthite, Cu3V2O7(OH)2-2H2O, containing an S-1/2 (Cu 2+ spin) kagome-like lattice is studied by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and 51 V NMR measurements. Signs for neither long-range order nor spin-gapped singlet ground states are detected down to 1.8 K, in spite of large antiferromagnetic couplings of ~100 K between Cu spins forming a two-dimensional kagome-like network. It is suggested that Volborthite represents a system close to a quantum critical point between classical long-range ordered and quantum disordered phases.

Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Hole Doped Two-Leg Ladders

The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_{1}$) has been measured in the single crystals of hole doped two-leg ladder compounds Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_{x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ and in the undoped parent material La$_6$Ca$_8$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$. Comparison of $1/T_{1}$ at the Cu and the two distinct oxygen sites revealed that the major spectral weight of low frequency spin fluctuations is located near $q \sim (π, π)$ for most of the temperature and doping ranges investigated. Remarkable difference in the temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ for the two oxygen sites in the heavily doped $x$=12 sample revealed reduction of singlet correlations between two legs in place of growing antiferromagnetic correlations along the leg direction with increasing temperature. Such behavior is most likely caused by the dissociation of bound hole pairs.

Possible Localized Modes in the Uniform Quantum Heisenberg Chains of Sr2CuO3

A model of mobile-bond defects is tentatively proposed to analyze the "anomalies" observed on the NMR spectrum of the quantum Heisenberg chains of Sr2CuO3. A bond-defect is a local change in the exchange coupling. It results in a local alternating magnetization (LAM), which when the defect moves, creates a flipping process of the local field seen by each nuclear spin. At low temperature, when the overlap of the LAM becomes large, the defects form a periodic structure, which extends over almost all the chains. In that regime, the density of bond-defects decreases linearly with T.

Nuclear spin-spin coupling in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} studied by stimulated echo decay

We have performed copper NQR experiments in high temperature superconductors YBa_{2}Cu_{4}O_{8}, YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}, and La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x=0.12 and 0.15), using the stimulated echo technique. The stimulated echo intensity is analyzed by a model that includes the spin-lattice relaxation process (T_ {1 }-process) and the fluctuating local field due to nuclear spin-spin coupling. The model gives quantitative account of the experimental results in Y-based compounds using the known values of 1/T_{1} and 1/T_{2G}, the gaussian decay rate of the spin echo intensity. The same model applied to LSCO enables us to extract the value of T_{2G}. Our results indicate that T_{1}T/T_{2G} is independent of temperature, implying that the dynamic exponent is one in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}.

Nuclear relaxation in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain compound Sr_2CuO_3 --- comparison between theories and experiments

The NMR relaxation data on Sr_2CuO_3 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 4612 (1996)] are reexamined and compared with the analytic theory of the dynamic susceptibility in the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain including multiplicative logarithmic corrections [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 539 (1997); cond-mat/9610015]. Comparisons of the spin-lattice and the gaussian spin-echo decay rates (1/T_1 and 1/T_{2G}) and their ratio all show good quantitative agreement. Our results demonstrate the importance of the logarithmic corrections in the analysis of experimental data for quasi-1D systems and indicate that the dynamics of Sr_2CuO_3 is well described by a S=1/2 one-dimensional Heisenberg model with a nearest neighbor exchange.
