$S^\prime_4$ Quark Flavour Model in the Vicinity of the Fixed Point $\tau = i\infty$

We study in the bottom-up framework the possibility to generate the quark mass hierarchies without fine-tuning, the quark mixing and CP-violation (CPV) in a flavour model with $S^\prime_4$ modular symmetry having minimal number of parameters. The model is considered in the vicinity of the fixed point $\tau_\text{T}= i\infty$, $\tau_\text{vev} \sim \tau_\text{T}$, $\tau_\text{vev}$ being the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the modulus $\tau$, which allows to explain the hierarchies of the quark masses. The ten quark observables are described by nine real parameters. The CP-symmetry is broken explicitly since, as is well known, reproducing the observed CPV in the quark sector in the case of spontaneous breaking of CP-symmetry by $\tau_\text{vev}$ is highly problematic in the class of minimal modular quark flavour models (explaining the quark mass hierarchies without fine-tuning) of the type we consider. We perform a statistical analysis of the model and show that it is phenomenologically viable and consistent, in particular, with the ``inclusive'' decay data on the $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$ elements of the CKM matrix and, in the case of a very high scale of supersymmetry breaking, with the current ``average'' experimental values of $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$.

$A_4$ modular invariance and the strong CP problem

We present simple effective theory of quark masses, mixing and CP violation with level $N=3$ ($A_4$) modular symmetry, which provides solution to the strong CP problem without the need for an axion. The vanishing of the strong CP-violating phase $\bar \theta$ is ensured by assuming CP to be a fundamental symmetry of the Lagrangian of the theory. The CP symmetry is broken spontaneously by the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the modulus $\tau$. This provides the requisite large value of the CKM CP-violating phase while the strong CP phase $\bar \theta$ remains zero or is tiny. Within the considered framework we discuss phenomenologically viable quark mass matrices with three types of texture zeros, which are realized by assigning both the left-handed and right-handed quark fields to $A_4$ singlets ${\bf 1}$, ${\bf 1'}$ and ${\bf 1''}$ with appropriate weights. The VEV of $\tau$ is restricted to reproduce the observed CKM parameters. We discuss cases in which the modulus VEV is close to the fixed points $i$, $\omega$ and $i\infty$. In particular, we focus on the VEV of $\tau$, which gives the absolute minima of the supergravity-motivated modular- and CP-invariant potentials for the modulus $\tau$, so called, modulus stabilisation. We present a successful model, which is consistent with the modulus stabilisation close to $\tau=\omega$.

$A_4$ Modular Flavour Model of Quark Mass Hierarchies close to the Fixed Point $\tau = i\infty$

We study the possibility to generate the quark mass hierarchies as well as the CKM quark mixing and CP violation without fine-tuning in a quark flavour model with modular $A_4$ symmetry. The quark mass hierarchies are considered in the vicinity of the fixed point $\tau = i\infty$, $\tau$ being the vacuum expectation value of the modulus. We consider first a model in which the up-type and down-type quark mass matrices $M_u$ and $M_d$ involve modular forms of level 3 and weights 6, 4 and 2 and each depends on four constant parameters. We also consider the case of $M_u$ and $M_d$ depending on the same $\tau$ and involving modular forms of weights 8, 4, 2 and 6, 4, 2, respectively, with $M_u$ receiving a tiny SUSY breaking or higher dimensional operator contribution. Both the mass hierarchies of up-type and down-type quarks as well and the CKM mixing angles and CP violating phase are reproduced successfully with one complex parameter and all parameters being in magnitude of the same order. The relatively large value of ${\rm Im}\,\tau$, needed for describing the down-type quark mass hierarchies, is crucial for obtaining the correct up-type quark mass hierarchies.

$A_4$ Modular Flavour Model of Quark Mass Hierarchies close to the Fixed Point $\tau = \omega$

We investigate the possibility to describe the quark mass hierarchies as well as the CKM quark mixing matrix without fine-tuning in a quark flavour model with modular $A_4$ symmetry. The quark mass hierarchies are considered in the vicinity of the fixed point $\tau = \omega \equiv \exp({i\,2\pi/3})$ (the left cusp of the fundamental domain of the modular group), $\tau$ being the VEV of the modulus. The model involves modular forms of level 3 and weights 6, 4 and 2, and contains eight constants, only two of which, $g_u$ and $g_d$, can be a source of CP violation in addition to the VEV of the modulus, $\tau = \omega + \epsilon$, $(\epsilon)^* \neq \epsilon$, $|\epsilon|\ll 1$. We find that in the case of real (CP-conserving) $g_u$ and $g_d$ and common $\tau$ ($\epsilon$) in the down-quark and up-quark sectors, the down-type quark mass hierarchies can be reproduced without fine tuning with $|\epsilon| \cong 0.03$, all other constants being of ${\cal O}(1)$, and correspond approximately to $1 : |\epsilon| : |\epsilon|^2$. The up-type quark mass hierarchies can be achieved with the same $|\epsilon| \cong 0.03$ but allowing $g_u\sim {\cal O}(10)$ and correspond to $1 : |\epsilon|/|g_u| : |\epsilon|^2/|g_u|^2$. In this setting, we discuss the CKM quark mixing and CP violation.

Trimaximal Neutrino Mixing from Modular A4 Invariance with Residual Symmetries

We construct phenomenologically viable models of lepton masses and mixing based on modular $A_4$ invariance broken to residual symmetries $\mathbb{Z}^{T}_3$ or $\mathbb{Z}^{ST}_3$ and $\mathbb{Z}^S_2$ respectively in the charged lepton and neutrino sectors. In these models the neutrino mixing matrix is of trimaximal mixing form. In addition to successfully describing the charged lepton masses, neutrino mass-squared differences and the atmospheric and reactor neutrino mixing angles $θ_{23}$ and $θ_{13}$, these models predict the values of the lightest neutrino mass (i.e., the absolute neutrino mass scale), of the Dirac and Majorana CP violation(CPV) phases, as well as the existence of specific correlations between i) the values of the solar neutrino mixing angle $θ_{12}$ and the angle $θ_{13}$ (which determines $θ_{12}$), ii) the values of the Dirac CPV phase $δ$ and of the angles $θ_{23}$ and $θ_{13}$, iii) the sum of the neutrino masses and $θ_{23}$, and iv) between the two Majorana phases.

The effect of supersymmetry breaking in the Mass Varying Neutrinos

We discuss the effect of the supersymmetry breaking on the Mass Varying Neutrinos(MaVaNs) scenario. Especially, the effect mediated by the gravitational interaction between the hidden sector and the dark energy sector is studied. A model including a chiral superfield in the dark sector and the right handed neutrino superfield is proposed. Evolutions of the neutrino mass and the equation of state parameter are presented in the model. It is remarked that only the mass of a sterile neutrino is variable in the case of the vanishing mixing between the left-handed and a sterile neutrino on cosmological time scale. The finite mixing makes the mass of the left-handed neutrino variable.

Letter of Intent for KASKA: High Accuracy Neutrino Oscillation Measurements with anti-nu_es from Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station

One of the current most-demanded experiments in neutrino physics is to measure the last mixing angle theta_13. KASKA is an experiment to detect new type of reactor neutrino oscillation and to measure sin^2 2theta_13 accurately using the world's most powerful nuclear reactor complex; Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station. KASKA utilizes near and far detectors of identical structure at nearly optimized baselines and underground depths to cancel most of the systematics and reduce backgrounds. The expected sensitivity is sin^2 2theta_13~0.015, which is 10 times better sensitivity than the current upper limit measured by CHOOZ reactor experiment. Extension of KASKA project has potential to accurately measure other anti-nu_e oscillation parameters. Intense and precisely known neutrino flux measured by the KASKA-theta_13 phase can be used to pin down sin^2 2theta_12 at a baseline ~50km and to measure Dm^2_13 for the first time at a baseline ~5km. This Letter of Intent describes physics motivation, detector system and expected performance of the KASKA experiment.

A Higher-dimensional Origin of the Inverted Mass Hierarchy for Neutrino

We present successful lepton mass matrices with an inverted mass hierarchy for neutrinos, which follow from a geometrical structure of a (1+5) dimensional space-time where two extra dimensions are compactified on the T^2/Z_3 orbifold. A 5^* and a right-handed neutrino N in each family are localized on each of the equivalent three fixed points of the orbifold while three 10's and Higgs doublets H_u and H_d live in the bulk. An S_3 family symmetry is assumed on three 5^*'s and on three N's, since the three fixed points are equivalent to one another. The Higgs field ϕresponsible for the B-L breaking is localized on one of the three fixed points, which generates the inverted hierarchy for the neutrino masses. The baryon asymmetry is well explained in the non-thermal leptogenesis via inflaton decay. We emphasize that the present model predicts the effective neutrino mass, _{ee}, responsible for neutrinoless double beta decays as _{ee}\simeq 50 meV. This will be accessible to future experiments.

Hybrid Textures of Neutrino Mass Matrix

We present analyses of the sixty hybrid textures of neutrino mass matrix, which have an equality of matrix elements and one zero. These textures are possibly derived in the models with discrete flavor symmetry. Only six textures among sixty ones are excluded by the present experimental data. Since there are many textures which give similar predictions, the textures are classified based on the numerical results. The neutrinoless double beta decay is also examined in these textures. Our results suggest that there remain still rich structures of the neutrino mass matrix in the phenomenological point of view.

Cosmological Family Asymmetry and CP violation

We discuss how the cosmological baryon asymmetry can be achieved by the lepton family asymmetries of heavy Majorana neutrino decays and they are related to CP violation in neutrino oscillation, in the minimal seesaw model with two heavy Majorana neutrinos. We derive the most general formula for CP violation in neutrino oscillation in terms of the heavy Majorana masses and Yukawa mass term. It is shown that the formula is very useful to classify several models in which $e-$, $μ-$ and $τ-$leptogenesis can be separately realized and to see how they are connected with low energy CP violaton. To make the models predictive, we take texture with two zeros in the Dirac neutrino Yukawa matrix. In particular, we find some interesting cases in which CP violation in neutrino oscillation can happen while lepton family asymmetries do not exist at all. On the contrary, we can find $e-$, $μ-$ and $τ-$leptogenesis scenarios in which the cosmological CP violation and low energy CP violation measurable via neutrino oscillations are very closely related to each other. By determining the allowed ranges of the parameters in the models, we predict the sizes of CP violation in neutrino oscillation and $|V_{e3}^{MNS}|$. Finally, the leptonic unitarity triangles are reconstructed.

A Universal Intrinsic Scale of Hole Concentration for High-Tc Cuprates

We have measured thermoelectric power (TEP) as a function of hole concentration per CuO2 layer, Ppl, in Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O6 (Ppl = x/2) with no oxygen in the Cu-O chain layer. The room-temperature TEP as a function of Ppl, S290(Ppl), of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O6 behaves identically to that of La2-zSrzCuO4 (Ppl = z). We argue that S290(Ppl) represents a measure of the intrinsic equilibrium electronic states of doped holes and, therefore, can be used as a common scale for the carrier concentrations of layered cuprates. We shows that the Ppl determined by this new universal scale is consistent with both hole concentration microscopically determined by NQR and the hole concentration macroscopically determined by the Cu valency. We find two characteristic scaling temperatures, TS* and TS2*, in the TEP vs. temperature curves that change systematically with doping. Based on the universal scale, we uncover a universal phase diagram in which almost all the experimentally determined pseudogap temperatures as a function of Ppl fall on two common curves; upper pseudogap temperature defined by the TS* versus Ppl curve and lower pseudogap temperature defined by the TS2* versus Ppl curve. We find that while pseudogaps are intrinsic properties of doped holes of a single CuO2 layer for all high-Tc cuprates, Tc depends on the number of layers, therefore the inter-layer coupling, in each individual system.

Lepton mixing angle $θ_{13} = 0$ with a horizontal symmetry $D_4$

We discuss a model for the lepton sector based on the seesaw mechanism and on a $D_4$ family symmetry. The model predicts the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ to vanish. The solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ is free--it will in general be large if one does not invoke finetuning. The model has an enlarged scalar sector with three Higgs doublets, together with two real scalar gauge singlets $χ_i$ ($ i = 1, 2$) which have vacuum expectation values < χ_i >_0$ at the seesaw scale. The atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ is given by $\tan θ_{23} = <χ_2>_0$ /<χ_1>_0$, and it is maximal if the Lagrangian is $D_4$-invariant; but $D_4$ may be broken softly, by a term of dimension two in the scalar potential, and then < χ_2_0$ becomes different from < χ_1_0$. Thus, the strength of the soft $D_4$ breaking controls the deviation of $θ_{23}$ from $π/ 4$. The model predicts a normal neutrino mass spectrum ($m_3 > m_2 > m_1$) and allows successful leptogenesis if $m_1 \sim 4 \times 10^{-3} \mathrm{eV}$; these properties of the model are independent of the presence and strength of the soft $D_4$ breaking.

Symmetry realization of texture zeros

We show that it is possible to enforce texture zeros in arbitrary entries of the fermion mass matrices by means of Abelian symmetries; in this way, many popular mass-matrix textures find a symmetry justification. We propose two alternative methods which allow to place zeros in any number of elements of the mass matrices that one wants. They are applicable simultaneously in the quark and lepton sectors. They are also applicable in Grand Unified Theories. The number of scalar fields required by our methods may be large; still, in many interesting cases this number can be reduced considerably. The larger the desired number of texture zeros is, the simpler are the models which reproduce the texture.

Predictions from the Fritzsch-Type Lepton Mass Matrices

We revisit the Fritzsch-type lepton mass matrix models confronted with new experiments for neutrino mixings. It is shown that the model is viable and leads to a rather narrow range of free parameters. Using empirical mixing information between $ν_e$ and $ν_μ$, and between $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$, it is predicted that the mixing angle between $nu_e$ and $ν_τ$ is in the range $0.04<|U_{13}|<0.20$, consistent with the CHOOZ experiment and the lightest neutrino mass is $0.0004 <0.007$ eV.

CP Violation in Bilarge Lepton Mixing

We propose a scheme of lepton mixing in which the unitary matrix that diagonalizes the neutrino mass matrix is bimaximal and the deviation from bimaximal of the lepton mixing matrix is due to the unitary matrix that diagonalizes the charged-lepton mass matrix. This matrix is assumed to be hierarchical, like the quark mixing matrix. It is shown that in general it is possible to have a sizable value for |U_{e3}| together with an effective two-neutrino maximal mixing in solar neutrino experiments. If the effective mixing in solar neutrino experiments is less than maximal, as indicated by current data, |U_{e3}| is bounded from below. Furthermore, in general the violation of CP could be relatively large.

Lepton Flavor Violating Processes in Bi-maximal Texture of Neutrino Mixings

We investigate the lepton flavor violation in the framework of the MSSM with right-handed neutrinos taking the large mixing angle MSW solution in the quasi-degenerate and the inverse-hierarchical neutrino masses. We predict the branching ratio of $μ\to e+γ$ processes assuming the degenerate right-handed Majorana neutrino masses. We find that the branching ratio in the quasi-degenerate neutrino mass spectrum is 100 times smaller than the ones in the inverse-hierarchical and the hierarchical neutrino spectra. We emphasize that the magnitude of $U_{e3}$ is one of important ingredients to predict BR($μ\to e +γ$). The effect of the deviation from the complete-degenerate right-handed Majorana neutrino masses are also estimated.

Neutrino Mass Matrix with Two Zeros and Leptogenesis

The leptogenesis is studied in the neutrino mass matrix with two zeros, which reduces the number of independent phases of the CP violation. These texture zeros are decomposed into the Dirac neutrino mass matrix and the right-handed Majorana one in the see-saw mechanism. It is found that there are six textures for the Dirac neutrino mass matrix, among which one texture with three zeros has three phases, three textures with four zeros have two phases, and two textures with five zeros have only one phase in the basis with the real right-handed Majorana mass matrix. The relation between the leptogenesis and the low energy CP violation is discussed in typical textures. It is remarked that the leptogenesis is linked strongly with the CP violation in the neutrino oscillations. The predicted baryon asymmetry of the universe is consistent with the observed value.
