An Extended Isgur-Paton Model: Agreement With the Lattice?

The spectrum for the pure gauge sector is calculated for an extended Isgur-Paton model in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions and compared to recent lattice calculations of the glueball spectrum. The IP model is extended by inclusion of a rigidity (curvature) term and, in D=2+1, mixing through a higer topological contribution. For a choice of parameterizations, near quantitative agreement is found for SU(3) in D=2+1, but in D=3+1 the extensions fail to remedy the qualitative disagreement.

Magnetic monopole clusters, and monopole dominance after smoothing in the maximally Abelian gauge of SU(2)

In the maximally Abelian gauge of SU(2), the clusters of monopole current are found to divide into two distinct classes. The largest cluster permeates the lattice, has a density that scales and produces the string tension. The remaining clusters possess an approximate 1/l^3 number density distribution (l is the cluster length), their radii vary as \sqrt l and their total current density does not scale. Their contribution to the string tension is compatible with being exactly zero. Their number density can be thought of as arising from an underlying scale invariant distribution. This suggests that they are not related to instantons. We also observe that when we locally smoothen the SU(2) fields by cooling, the string tension due to monopoles becomes much smaller than the SU(2) string tension. This dramatic loss of Abelian/monopole dominance occurs even after just one cooling step.

On the Phase Diagram of the SU(2) Adjoint Higgs Model in 2+1 Dimensions

The phase diagram is investigated for SU(2) lattice gauge theory in d=3, coupled to adjoint scalars. For small values of the quartic scalar coupling, lambda, the transition separating Higgs and confinement phases is found to be first-order, in agreement with earlier work by Nadkarni. The surface of second-order transitions conjectured by Nadkarni, however, is shown instead to correspond to crossover behaviour. This conclusion is based on a finite size analysis of the scalar mass and susceptibility. The nature of the phase transition at the termination of first-order behaviour is investigated and we find evidence for a critical point at which the scalar mass vanishes. The photon mass and confining string tension are measured and are found to be negligibly small in the Higgs phase. This is correlated with the very small density of magnetic monopoles in the Higgs phase. The string tension and photon mass rise rapidly as the crossover is traversed towards the symmetric phase.

SU(N) gauge theories for all N in 3 and 4 dimensions

We compare the mass spectra and string tensions of SU(2), SU(3) and SU(4) gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions. We find that the ratios of masses are, to a first approximation, independent of N and that the remaining dependence can be accurately reproduced by a simple O(1/N^2) correction. This provides us with a prediction of these mass ratios for all SU(N) theories in 2+1 dimensions and demonstrates that these theories are `close' to N=\infty for N\geq 2. We also find that, when expressed in units of the dynamical length scale of the theory, the dimensionful coupling g^2 is proportional to 1/N at large N. We confirm that these theories are indeed confining in the limit N \to \infty. We describe preliminary calculations in 3+1 dimensions which indicate that the same will be true there.

SU(N) gauge theories for all N

We show that SU(N) gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions are close to N=\infty for N \geq 2. The dimensionful coupling, g^2, is proportional to 1/N, at large N, confirming the usual diagram-based expectation. Preliminary calculations in 3+1 dimensions indicate that the same is true there.

Mass Spectrum of the 3d SU(2) Higgs Model and the Symmetric Electroweak Phase

We present results for the masses of the low-lying states with quantum numbers $0^{++}$, $2^{++}$ and $1^{--}$ as well as Polyakov line correlations in the Higgs and confinement regions of the 3d SU(2) Higgs model. In the confinement phase we find a dense spectrum of bound states approximately split into two disjoint sectors. One consists of W-balls nearly identical to the glueball spectrum of the pure gauge theory, the other of bound states of scalars.

Monopole Spectra in non-Abelian Gauge Theories

We study the continuum limit of the length spectrum of magnetic monopole structures found after various Abelian projections of pure gauge SU(2), including the maximally Abelian gauge. We comment on Gribov copies, and measurements of the string tension.

Domain walls and perturbation theory in high temperature gauge theory: SU(2) in 2+1 dimensions

We study the detailed properties of Z_2 domain walls in the deconfined high temperature phase of the d=2+1 SU(2) gauge theory. These walls are studied both by computer simulations of the lattice theory and by one-loop perturbative calculations. The latter are carried out both in the continuum and on the lattice. We find that leading order perturbation theory reproduces the detailed properties of these domain walls remarkably accurately even at temperatures where the effective dimensionless expansion parameter, g^2/T, is close to unity. The quantities studied include the surface tension, the action density profiles, roughening and the electric screening mass. It is only for the last quantity that we find an exception to the precocious success of perturbation theory. All this shows that, despite the presence of infrared divergences at higher orders, high-T perturbation theory can be an accurate calculational tool.

Gribov Copies in the Maximally Abelian Gauge and Confinement

We fix $SU(2)$ lattice gauge fields to the Maximally Abelian gauge in both three and four dimensions. We extract the corresponding $U(1)$ fields and monopole current densities and calculate separately the confining string tensions arising from these $U(1)$ fields and monopole `condensates'. We generate multiple Gribov copies and study how the $U(1)$ fields and monopole distributions vary between these different copies. As expected, we find substantial variations in the number of monopoles, their locations and in the values of the $U(1)$ field strengths. The string tensions extracted from `extreme' Gribov copies also differ but this difference appears to be no more than about 20\%. We also directly compare the fields of different Gribov copies. We find that on the distance scales relevant to confinement the $U(1)$ and monopole fluxes that disorder Wilson loops are highly correlated between these different Gribov copies. All this suggests that while there is indeed a Gribov copy problem the resulting ambiguity is, in this gauge and for the study of confinement, of limited importance.

On the Mass Spectrum of the SU(2) Higgs Model in 2+1 Dimensions

We calculate the masses of the low-lying states with quantum numbers $J^{PC}=0^{++},1^{--}$ in the Higgs and confinement regions of the three-dimensional SU(2) Higgs model, which plays an important rôle in the description of the thermodynamic properties of the standard model at finite temperatures. We extract the masses from correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators which are calculated by means of a lattice Monte Carlo simulation. The projection properties of our lattice operators onto the lowest states are greatly improved by the use of smearing techniques. We also consider cross correlations between various operators with the same quantum numbers. From these the mass eigenstates are determined by means of a variational calculation. In the symmetric phase, we find that some of the ground state masses are about 30\% lighter than those reported from previous simulations. We also obtain the masses of the first few excited states in the symmetric phase. Remarkable among these is the occurrence of a $0^{++}$ state composed almost entirely of gauge degrees of freedom. The mass of this state, as well as that of its first excitations, is nearly identical to the corresponding glueball states in three-dimensional SU(2) pure gauge theory, indicating an approximate decoupling of the pure gauge sector from the Higgs sector of the model. We perform a detailed study of finite size effects and extrapolate the lattice mass spectrum to the continuum.

Instantons and Monopoles in the Maximally Abelian Gauge

We study the Abelian projection of SU(2) instantons in the Maximally Abelian gauge. We find that in this gauge an isolated instanton produces a closed monopole loop within its core and the size of this loop increases with the core size. We show that this result is robust against the introduction of small quantum fluctuations. We investigate the effects of neighbouring (anti)instantons upon each other and show how overlapping (anti)instantons can generate larger monopole loops. We find, however, that in fields that are typical of the fully quantised vacuum only some of the large monopole loops that are important for confinement have a topological origin. We comment on what this may imply for the role of instantons in confinement and chiral symmetry breaking.

Gauge Theory in d=2+1 at High Temperature: Z_N interface

We calculate on the lattice the interface tension in the SU(2) pure gauge theory in d=2+1 at high temperature. The result is compared to the perturbative prediction. The agreement confirms applicability of the perturbation theory in this case.

Glueball Spectra of SU(2) Gauge Theories in 3 and 4 Dimensions: A Comparison with the Isgur-Paton Flux Tube Model

We use the results of recent lattice calculations to obtain (part of) the mass spectrum of continuum SU(2) gauge theory in both 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions. We compare these spectra to the predictions of the Isgur-Paton flux tube model for glueballs. We use this comparison to test the reliability of different aspects of the model and also to learn which aspects of the lattice calculations it is important to improve upon.
