Ultraslow quantum dynamics in a sub-Ohmic heat bath

We show that the low-frequency modes of a sub-Ohmic bosonic heat bath generate an effective dynamical asymmetry for an intrinsically symmetric quantum spin -1/2. An initially fully polarized spin first decays towards a quasiequilibrium determined by the dynamical asymmetry, thereby showing coherent damped oscillations on the (fast) time scale of the spin splitting. On top of this, the dynamical asymmetry itself decays on an ultraslow time scale and vanishes asymptotically since the global equilibrium phase is symmetric. We quantitatively study the nature of the initial fast decay to the quasiequilibrium and discuss the features of ultraslow dynamics of the quasiequilibrium itself. The dynamical asymmetry is more pronounced for smaller values of the sub-Ohmic exponent and for lower temperatures, which emphasizes the quantum many-body nature of the effect. The symmetry breaking is related to the dynamic crossover between coherent and overdamped relaxation of the spin polarization and is not connected to the localization quantum phase transition. In addition to this delocalized phase, we identify a novel phase which is characterized by damped coherent oscillations in the localized phase. This allows for a sketch of the zero-temperature phase diagram of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model with four distinct phases.

Comparative study of theoretical methods for nonequilibrium quantum transport

We present a detailed comparison of three different methods designed to tackle nonequilibrium quantum transport, namely the functional renormalization group (fRG), the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG), and the iterative summation of real-time path integrals (ISPI). For the nonequilibrium single-impurity Anderson model (including a Zeeman term at the impurity site), we demonstrate that the three methods are in quantitative agreement over a wide range of parameters at the particle-hole symmetric point as well as in the mixed-valence regime. We further compare these techniques with two quantum Monte Carlo approaches and the time-dependent numerical renormalization group method.

Quantum coherent biomolecular energy transfer with spatially correlated fluctuations

We show that the quantum coherent transfer of excitations between biomolecular chromophores is strongly influenced by spatial correlations of the environmental fluctuations. The latter are due either to propagating environmental modes or to local fluctuations with a finite localization length. A simple toy model of a single donor-acceptor pair with spatially separated chromophore sites allows to investigate the influence of these spatial correlations on the quantum coherent excitation transfer. The sound velocity of the solvent determines the wave lengths of the environmental modes, which, in turn, has to be compared to the spatial distance of the chromophore sites. When the wave length exceeds the distance between donor and acceptor site, we find strong suppression of decoherence. In addition, we consider two spatially separated donor-acceptor pairs under the influence of propagating environmental modes. Depending on their wave lengths fixed by the sound velocity of the solvent material, the spatial range of correlations may extend over typical interpair distances, which can lead to an increase of the decohering influence of the solvent. Surprisingly, this effect is counteracted by increasing temperature.

Dynamical bistability in the driven circuit QED

We show that the nonlinear response of a driven circuit quantum electrodynamics setup displays antiresonant multiphoton transitions, as recently observed in a transmon qubit device. By including photon leaking, we explain the lineshape by a perturbative and a semiclassical analysis. We derive a bistable semiclassical quasienergy surface whose lowest quasienergy eigenstate is squeezed, allowing for a squeezing-dependent local effective temperature. We study the escape dynamics out of the metastable state and find signatures of dynamical tunneling, similar as for the quantum Duffing oscillator.

Breakdown of perturbative weak coupling approaches for the biomolecular energy transfer

We show that the biomolecular exciton dynamics under the influence of slow polarization fluctuations in the solvent cannot be described by approaches which are perturbative in the system-bath coupling. For this, we compare results for the decoherence rate of the exciton dynamics of a resumed perturbation theory with numerically exact real-time path-integral results. We find up to one order in magnitude difference in the decoherence rate for realistically slow solvent environments even in the weak coupling regime, while both results coincide for fast environmental noise. This shows explicitely the nonperturbative influence of the bioenvironmental fluctuations and might render current perturbative approaches to biomolecular exciton transport questionable.

Ultracold bosons in lattices with binary disorder

Quantum phases of ultracold bosons with repulsive interactions in lattices in the presence of quenched disorder are investigated. The disorder is assumed to be caused by the interaction of the bosons with impurity atoms having a large effective mass. The system is described by the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with random on-site energies which have a discrete binary probability distribution. The phase diagram at zero temperature is calculated using several methods like a strong-coupling expansion, an exact numerical diagonalization, and a Bose-Fermi mapping valid in the hard-core limit. It is shown that the Mott-insulator phase exists for any strength of disorder in contrast to the case of continuous probability distribution. We find that the compressibility of the Bose glass phase varies in a wide range and can be extremely low. Furthermore, we evaluate experimentally accessible quantities like the momentum distribution, the static and dynamic structure factors, and the density of excited states. The influence of finite temperature is discussed as well.

Interaction-induced harmonic frequency mixing in quantum dots

We show that harmonic frequency mixing in quantum dots coupled to two leads under the influence of time-dependent voltages of different frequency is dominated by interaction effects. This offers a unique and direct spectroscopic tool to access correlations, and holds promise for efficient frequency mixing in nano-devices. Explicit results are provided for an Anderson dot and for a molecular level with phonon-mediated interactions.

Iterative real-time path integral approach to nonequilibrium quantum transport

We have developed a numerical approach to compute real-time path integral expressions for quantum transport problems out of equilibrium. The scheme is based on a deterministic iterative summation of the path integral (ISPI) for the generating function of the nonequilibrium current. Self-energies due to the leads, being non-local in time, are fully taken into account within a finite memory time, thereby including non-Markovian effects, and numerical results are extrapolated both to vanishing (Trotter) time discretization and to infinite memory time. This extrapolation scheme converges except at very low temperatures, and the results are then numerically exact. The method is applied to nonequilibrium transport through an Anderson dot.

Current-induced non-adiabatic spin torques and domain wall motion with spin relaxation in a ferromagnetic metallic wire

Within the s-d model description, we derive the current-driven spin torque in a ferromagnet, taking explicitly into account a spin-relaxing Caldeira-Leggett bath coupling to the s-electrons. We derive Bloch-Redfield equations of motion for the s-electron spin dynamics, and formulate a systematic gradient expansion to obtain non-adiabatic (higher-order) corrections to the well-known adiabatic (first-order) spin torque. We provide simple analytical expressions for the second-order spin torque. The theory is applied to current-driven domain wall motion. Second-order contributions imply a deformation of a transverse tail-to-tail domain wall. The wall center still moves with a constant velocity that now depends on the spin-polarized current in a non-trivial manner.

Charge qubit entanglement in double quantum dots

We study entanglement of charge qubits in a vertical tunnel-coupled double quantum dot containing two interacting electrons. Exact diagonalization is used to compute the negativity characterizing entanglement. We find that entanglement can be efficiently generated and controlled by sidegate voltages, and describe how it can be detected. For large enough tunnel coupling, the negativity shows a pronounced maximum at an intermediate interaction strength within the Wigner molecule regime.

Phonon-induced decoherence and dissipation in donor-based charge qubits

We investigate the phonon-induced decoherence and dissipation in a donor-based charge quantum bit realized by the orbital states of an electron shared by two dopant ions which are implanted in a silicon host crystal. The dopant ions are taken from the group-V elements Bi, As, P, Sb. The excess electron is coupled to deformation potential acoustic phonons which dominate in the Si host. The particular geometry tailors a non-monotonous frequency distribution of the phonon modes. We determine the exact qubit dynamics under the influence of the phonons by employing the numerically exact quasi-adiabatic propagator path integral scheme thereby taking into account all bath-induced correlations. In particular, we have improved the scheme by completely eliminating the Trotter discretization error by a Hirsch-Fye extrapolation. By comparing the exact results to those of a Born-Markov approximation we find that the latter yields appropriate estimates for the decoherence and relaxation rates. However, noticeable quantitative corrections due to non-Markovian contributions appear.

Nonlinear response of a driven vibrating nanobeam in the quantum regime

We analytically investigate the nonlinear response of a damped doubly clamped nanomechanical beam under static longitudinal compression which is excited to transverse vibrations. Starting from a continuous elasticity model for the beam, we consider the dynamics of the beam close to the Euler buckling instability. There, the fundamental transverse mode dominates and a quantum mechanical time-dependent effective single particle Hamiltonian for its amplitude can be derived. In addition, we include the influence of a dissipative Ohmic or super-Ohmic environment. In the rotating frame, a Markovian master equation is derived which includes also the effect of the time-dependent driving in a non-trivial way. The quasienergies of the pure system show multiple avoided level crossings corresponding to multiphonon transitions in the resonator. Around the resonances, the master equation is solved analytically using Van Vleck perturbation theory. Their lineshapes are calculated resulting in simple expressions. We find the general solution for the multiple multiphonon resonances and, most interestingly, a bath-induced transition from a resonant to an antiresonant behavior of the nonlinear response.

Nanoscale atomic waveguides with suspended carbon nanotubes

We propose an experimentally viable setup for the realization of one-dimensional ultracold atom gases in a nanoscale magnetic waveguide formed by single doubly-clamped suspended carbon nanotubes. We show that all common decoherence and atom loss mechanisms are small guaranteeing a stable operation of the trap. Since the extremely large current densities in carbon nanotubes are spatially homogeneous, our proposed architecture allows to overcome the problem of fragmentation of the atom cloud. Adding a second nanowire allows to create a double-well potential with a moderate tunneling barrier which is desired for tunneling and interference experiments with the advantage of tunneling distances being in the nanometer regime.

Non-Markovian dynamics of double quantum dot charge qubits due to acoustic phonons

We investigate the dynamics of a double quantum dot charge qubit which is coupled to piezoelectric acoustic phonons, appropriate for GaAs heterostructures. At low temperatures, the phonon bath induces a non-Markovian dynamical behavior of the oscillations between the two charge states of the double quantum dot. Upon applying the numerically exact quasiadiabatic propagator path-integral scheme, the reduced density matrix of the charge qubit is calculated, thereby avoiding the Born-Markov approximation. This allows a systematic study of the dependence of the Q-factor on the lattice temperature, on the size of the quantum dots, as well as on the interdot coupling. We calculate the Q-factor for a recently realized experimental setup and find that it is two orders of magnitudes larger than the measured value, indicating that the decoherence due to phonons is a subordinate mechanism.

Spectroscopy of a driven solid-state qubit coupled to a structured environment

We study the asymptotic dynamics of a driven spin-boson system where the environment is formed by a broadened localized mode. Upon exploiting an exact mapping, an equivalent formulation of the problem in terms of a quantum two-state system (qubit) coupled to a harmonic oscillator which is itself Ohmically damped, is found. We calculate the asymptotic population difference of the two states in two complementary parameter regimes. For weak damping and low temperature, a perturbative Floquet-Born-Markovian master equation for the qubit-oscillator system can be solved. We find multi-photon resonances corresponding to transitions in the coupled quantum system and calculate their line-shape analytically. In the complementary parameter regime of strong damping and/or high temperatures, non-perturbative real-time path integral techniques yield analytic results for the resonance line shape. In both regimes, we find very good agreement with exact results obtained from a numerical real-time path-integral approach. Finally, we show for the case of strong detuning between qubit and oscillator that the width of the $n$-photon resonance scales with the $n$-th Bessel function of the driving strength in the weak-damping regime.

Correlated sequential tunneling through a double barrier for interacting one-dimensional electrons

The problem of resonant tunneling through a quantum dot weakly coupled to spinless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids has been studied. We compute the linear conductance due to sequential tunneling processes upon employing a master equation approach. Besides the previously used lowest-order golden rule rates describing uncorrelated sequential tunneling (UST) processes, we systematically include higher-order correlated sequential tunneling (CST) diagrams within the standard Weisskopf-Wigner approximation. We provide estimates for the parameter regions where CST effects can be important. Focusing mainly on the temperature dependence of the peak conductance, we discuss the relation of these findings to previous theoretical and experimental results.

Confinement-induced resonances for a two-component ultracold atom gas in arbitrary quasi-one-dimensional traps

We solve the two-particle s-wave scattering problem for ultracold atom gases confined in arbitrary quasi-one-dimensional trapping potentials, allowing for two different atom species. As a consequence, the center-of-mass and relative degrees of freedom do not factorize. We derive bound-state solutions and obtain the general scattering solution, which exhibits several resonances in the 1D scattering length induced by the confinement. We apply our formalism to two experimentally relevant cases: (i) interspecies scattering in a two-species mixture, and (ii) the two-body problem for a single species in a non-parabolic trap.

Entanglement spectroscopy of a driven solid-state qubit and its detector

We study the asymptotic dynamics of a driven quantum two level system coupled via a quantum detector to the environment. We find multi-photon resonances which are due to the entanglement of the qubit and the detector. Different regimes are studied by employing a perturbative Floquet-Born-Markov approach for the qubit+detector system, as well as non-perturbative real-time path integral schemes for the driven spin-boson system. We find analytical results for the resonances, including the red and the blue sidebands. They agree well with those of exact ab-initio calculations.
