Large conductance modulation of gold thin films by huge charge injection via electrochemical gating

By using an electrochemical gating technique with a new combination of polymer and electrolyte, we were able to inject surface charge densities n_2D as high as 3.5 \times 10^15 e/cm^2 in gold films and to observe large relative variations in the film resistance, DeltaR/R', up to 10% at low temperature. DeltaR/R' is a linear function of n_2D - as expected within a free-electron model - if the film is thick enough (> 25 nm), otherwise a tendency to saturation due to size effects is observed. The application of this technique to 2D materials will allow extending the field-effect experiments to a range of charge doping where giant conductance modulations and, in some cases, even the occurrence of superconductivity are expected.

Interplay of composition, structure, magnetism, and superconductivity in SmFeAs1-xPxO1-y

Polycrystalline samples and single crystals of SmFeAs1-xPxO1-y were synthesized and grown employing different synthesis methods and annealing conditions. Depending on the phosphorus and oxygen content, the samples are either magnetic or superconducting. In the fully oxygenated compounds the main impact of phosphorus substitution is to suppress the Néel temperature TN of the spin density wave (SDW) state, and to strongly reduce the local magnetic field in the SDW state, as deduced from muon spin rotation measurements. On the other hand the superconducting state is observed in the oxygen deficient samples only after heat treatment under high pressure. Oxygen deficiency as a result of synthesis at high pressure brings the Sm-O layer closer to the superconducting As/P-Fe-As/P block and provides additional electron transfer. Interestingly, the structural modifications in response to this variation of the electron count are significantly different when phosphorus is partly substituting arsenic. Point contact spectra are well described with two superconducting gaps. Magnetic and resistance measurements on single crystals indicate an in-plane magnetic penetration depth of 200 nm and an anisotropy of the upper critical field slope of 4-5. Multigap superconductivity and strong electron-boson coupling in Fe-based superconductors: A point-contact Andreev-reflection study of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals

Directional point-contact Andreev-reflection (PCAR) measurements in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals (Tc=24.5 K) indicate the presence of two superconducting gaps with no line nodes on the Fermi surface. The PCAR spectra also feature additional structures related to the electron-boson interaction, from which the characteristic boson energy Omega_b(T) is obtained, very similar to the spin-resonance energy observed in neutron scattering experiments. Both the gaps and the additional structures can be reproduced within a three-band s+- Eliashberg model by using an electron-boson spectral function peaked at Omega_0 = 12 meV ~ Omega_b(0).

Coexistence of two order parameters and a pseudogaplike feature in the iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO_(1-x)F_x

The nature and value of the order parameters (OPs) in the superconducting Fe-based oxypnictides REFeAsO_(1-x)F_x (RE = rare earth) are a matter of intense debate, also connected to the pairing mechanism which is probably unconventional. Point-contact Andreev-reflection experiments on LaFeAsO_(1-x)F_x gave us direct evidence of three energy scales in the superconducting state: a nodeless superconducting OP, Delta1 = 2.8-4.6 meV, which scales with the local Tc of the contact; a larger unconventional OP that gives conductance peaks at 9.8-12 meV, apparently closes below Tc and decreases on increasing the Tc of the contact; a pseudogaplike feature (i.e. a depression in the conductance around zero bias), that survives in the normal state up to T* ~ 140 K (close to the Neel temperature of the undoped compound), which we associate to antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations (AF SF) coexisting with superconductivity. These findings point toward a complex, unconventional nature of superconductivity in LaFeAsO_(1-x)F_x.

Three-band s+- Eliashberg theory and the superconducting gaps of iron pnictides

The experimental critical temperatures and gap values of the superconducting pnictides of both the 1111 and 122 families can be simultaneously reproduced within the Eliashberg theory by using a three-band model where the dominant role is played by interband interactions and the order parameter undergoes a sigh reversal between hole and electron bands (s+- wave symmetry). High values of the electron-boson coupling constants and small typical boson energies (in agreement with experiments) are necessary to obtain the values of all the gaps and to correctly reproduce their temperature dependence.

Point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy in ReFeAsO_{1-x}F_x (Re = La, Sm): Possible evidence for two nodeless gaps

A deep understanding of the character of superconductivity in the recently discovered Fe-based oxypnictides ReFeAsO1-xFx (Re = rare-earth) necessarily requires the determination of the number of the gaps and their symmetry in k space, which are fundamental ingredients of any model for the pairing mechanism in these new superconductors. In the present paper, we show that point-contact Andreev-reflection experiments performed on LaFeAsO1-xFx (La-1111) polycrystals with Tc ~ 27 K and SmFeAsO0.8F0.2 (Sm-1111) ones with Tc ~ 53 K gave differential conductance curves exhibiting two peaks at low bias and two additional structures (peaks or shoulders) at higher bias, an experimental situation quite similar to that observed by the same technique in pure and doped MgB2. The single-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model is totally unable to properly fit the conductance curves, while the two-gap one accounts remarkably well for the shape of the whole experimental dI/dV vs. V curves. These results give direct evidence of two nodeless gaps in the superconducting state of ReFeAsO1-xFx (Re = La, Sm): a small gap, Delta1, smaller than the BCS value (2Delta1/kBTc ~ 2.2 - 3.2) and a much larger gap Delta2 which gives a ratio 2Delta2/kBTc ~ 6.5 - 9. In Sm-1111 both gaps close at the same temperature, very similar to the bulk Tc, and follow a BCS-like behaviour, while in La-1111 the situation is more complex, the temperature dependence of the gaps showing remarkable deviations from the BCS behaviour at T close to Tc. The normal-state conductance reproducibly shows an unusual, but different, shape in La-1111 and Sm-1111 with a depression or a hump at zero bias, respectively. These structures survive up to T* ~ 140 K, close to the temperatures at which structural and magnetic transitions occur in the parent, undoped compound.

Single crystals of LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) and Ba1-xRbxFe2As2: growth, structure and superconducting properties

A review of our investigations on single crystals of LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) and Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 is presented. A high pressure technique has been applied for the growth of LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals, while Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 crystals were grown using quartz ampoule method. Single crystals were used for electrical transport, structure, magnetic torque and spectroscopic studies. Investigations of the crystal structure confirmed high structural perfection and show less than full occupation of the (O, F) position in superconducting LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals. Resistivity measurements on LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals show a significant broadening of the transition in high magnetic fields, whereas the resistive transition in Ba1 xRbxFe2As2 simply shifts to lower temperature. Critical current density for both compounds is relatively high and exceeds 2x109 A/m2 at 15 K in 7 T. The anisotropy of magnetic penetration depth, measured on LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals by torque magnetometry is temperature dependent and apparently larger than the anisotropy of the upper critical field. Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 crystals are electronically significantly less anisotropic. Point-Contact Andreev-Reflection spectroscopy indicates the existence of two energy gaps in LnFeAsO1-xFx. Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy reveals in addition to a superconducting gap, also some feature at high energy (~20 meV).

Evidence for two-gap nodeless superconductivity in SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ from point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy

Point-contact Andreev-reflection measurements were performed in SmFeAsO_{0.8}F_{0.2} polycrystals with T_c \simeq 53 K. The experimental conductance curves reproducibly exhibit peaks around \pm 6 mV and shoulders at V \sim 16-20 mV, indicating the presence of two nodeless superconducting gaps. While the single-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk fit can only reproduce a small central portion of the conductance curve, the two-gap one accounts remarkably well for the shape of the whole experimental dI/dV. The fits of the normalized curves give Delta_1(0) = 6.15 \pm 0.45 meV and Delta_2(0) = 18 \pm 3 meV. Both gaps close at the same temperature and follow a BCS-like behavior.

Evidence for gap anisotropy in CaC6 from directional point-contact spectroscopy

We present the first results of directional point-contact spectroscopy in high quality CaC6 samples both along the ab plane and in the c-axis direction. The superconducting order parameter Δ(0), obtained by fitting the Andreev-reflection (AR) conductance curves at temperatures down to 400 mK with the single-band 3D Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model, presents two different distributions in the two directions of the main current injection, peaked at 1.35 and 1.71 meV, respectively. By ab-initio calculations of the AR conductance spectra, we show that the experimental results are in good agreement with the recent predictions of gap anisotropy in CaC6.

Point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy in segregation-free Mg_{1-x}Al_{x}B_2 single crystals up to x=0.32

We present new results of point-contact Andreev-reflection (PCAR) spectroscopy in single-phase Mg_{1-x}Al_{x}B_{2} single crystals with x up to 0.32. Fitting the conductance curves of our point contacts with the two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model allowed us to extract the gap amplitudes Delta_{sigma} and Delta_{pi}. The gap values agree rather well with other PCAR results in Al-doped crystals and polycrystals up to x=0.2 reported in literature, and extend them to higher Al contents. In the low-doping regime, however, we observed an increase in the small gap Delta_{pi} on increasing x (or decreasing the local critical temperature of the junctions, T_{c}^{A}) which is not as clearly found in other samples. On further decreasing T_{c}^{A} below 30 K, both the gaps decrease and, up to the highest doping level x=0.32 and down to T_{c}^{A}= 12 K, no gap merging is observed. A detailed analysis of the data within the two-band Eliashberg theory shows that this gap trend can be explained as being mainly due to the band filling and to an increase in the interband scattering which is necessary to account for the increase in Delta_{pi} at low Al contents (x < 0.1). We suggest to interpret the following decrease of Delta_{pi} for T_{c}^{A} < 30 K as being governed by the onset of inhomogeneity and disorder in the Al distribution that partly mask the intrinsic effects of doping and is not taken into account in standard theoretical approaches.

MgB2 single crystals substituted with Li and with Li-C: Structural and superconducting properties

The effect of Li substitution for Mg and of Li-C co-substitution on the superconducting properties and crystal structure of MgB2 single crystals has been investigated. It has been found that hole doping with Li decreases the superconducting transition temperature Tc, but at a slower rate than electron doping with C or Al. Tc of MgB2 crystals with simultaneously substituted Li for Mg and C for B decreases more than in the case where C is substituted alone. This means that holes introduced by Li cannot counterbalance the effect of decrease of Tc caused by introduction of electrons coming from C. The possible reason of it can be that holes coming from Li occupy the pi band while electrons coming from C fill the sigma band. The temperature dependences of the upper critical field Hc2 for Al and Li substituted crystals with the same Tc show a similar dHc2/dT slope at Tc and a similar Hc2(T) behavior, despite of much different substitution level. This indicates that the mechanism controlling Hc2 and Tc is similar in both hole and electron doped crystals. Electrical transport measurements show an increase of resistivity both in Li substituted crystals and in Li and C co-substituted crystals. This indicates enhanced scattering due to defects introduced by substitutions including distortion of the lattice. The observed behavior can be explained as a result of two effects, influencing both Tc and Hc2. The first one is doping related to the changes in the carrier concentration, which may lead to the decrease or to the increase of Tc. The second one is related to the introduction of new scattering centers leading to the modification of the interband and/or intraband scattering and therefore, to changes in the superconducting gaps and to the reduction of Tc.

Point-contact spectroscopy in neutron-irradiated Mg^{11}B_2

We report on recent results of point-contact spectroscopy measurements in Mg^{11}B_2 polycrystals irradiated at different neutron fluences up to 1.4 x 10^{20} cm^{-2}. The point contacts were made by putting a small drop of Ag paint -- acting as the counterelectrode -- on the cleaved surface of the samples. The gap amplitudes were extracted from the experimental conductance curves, showing Andreev-reflection features, through a two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk fit and reported as a function of the Andreev critical temperature of the junctions, TcA. The resulting Delta_sigma(TcA) and Delta_pi(TcA) curves show a clear merging of the gaps when TcA ~ 9K that perfectly confirms the findings of specific-heat measurements in the same samples. Anomalous contacts with TcA > Tc (being Tc the bulk critical temperature) were often obtained, particularly in samples irradiated at very high fluences. Their fit gave a different dependence of Delta_pi on TcA. The possible origin of these contacts is discussed in terms of local current-induced annealing and/or nanoscale inhomogeneities observed by STM in the most irradiated samples.

The effect of magnetic impurities in a two-band superconductor: A point-contact study of Mn-substituted MgB2 single crystals

We present the first results of directional point-contact measurements in Mg_{1-x}Mn_{x}B_2 single crystals, with x up to 0.015 and bulk T_c down to 13.3 K. The order parameters Delta_{sigma} and Delta_{pi} were obtained by fitting the conductance curves with the two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model. Both Delta_{pi} and Delta_{sigma} decrease with the critical temperature of the junctions T_c^A, but remain clearly distinct up to the highest Mn content. Once analyzed within the Eliashberg theory, the results indicate that spin-flip scattering is dominant in the sigma band, as also confirmed by first-principle band structure calculations.
