Double parton scattering: a study of the effective cross section within a Light-Front quark model

We present a calculation of the effective cross section $σ_{eff}$, an important ingredient in the description of double parton scattering in proton-proton collisions. Our theoretical approach makes use of a Light-Front quark model as framework to calculate the double parton distribution functions at low-resolution scale. QCD evolution is implemented to reach the experimental scale. The obtained $σ_{eff}$, when averaged over the longitudinal momentum fractions of the interacting partons, $x_i$, is consistent with the present experimental scenario. However the result of the complete calculation shows a dependence of $σ_{eff}$ on $x_i$, a feature not easily seen in the available data, probably because of their low accuracy. Measurements of $σ_{eff}$ in restricted $x_i$ regions are addressed to obtain indications on double parton correlations, a novel and interesting aspect of the three dimensional structure of the nucleon.

Light Hadron Spectrum in the Instanton Liquid Model

We review our recent study of the role played by the chiral interactions induced by instantons, in the lowest-lying sector of the light hadron spectrum. We discuss how the ordering of the lowest meson and baryon excitations is explained by the structure of the instanton-induced quark-quark and gluon-gluon interaction. We focus on the pion, nucleon, vector- and axial-vector mesons, and on the scalar glueball. We find that all these hadrons are bound in this model and have realistic masses.

Exploring the transition into the Chiral Regime of QCD using the Interacting Instanton Liquid Model

The non-perturbative quark-gluon interaction depends significantly on the value of the quark mass. In particular, in the light quark mass regime, correlations are strongly influenced by dynamics associated to chiral symmetry breaking. We use the Interacting Instanton Liquid Model (IILM) as a tool to investigate the microscopic dynamical mechanisms which underly the dependence on the quark mass and drive the transition into the chiral regime of QCD. To ensure the validity of the model, we first verify that the dependence on the quark mass for several observables calculated in the IILM agrees well with the predictions of chiral perturbation theory and with lattice simulations. We then show that a quark mass m*~80 MeV emerging naturally from the model specifies the mass scale above which the dynamics associated with low-lying eigenmodes of the Direac operator becomes sub-leading and the contribution of the fermion determinant is suppressed.

Instantons, Chiral Dynamics and Hadronic Resonances

We use the Interacting Instanton Liquid Model (IILM) as a tool to study the role played by the chiral interactions in the lowest-lying vector and axial vector meson resonances. We find that narrow a1 and rho meson resonances can be generated by instanton-induced chiral forces, even in the absence of confinement. In the IILM, these hadrons are found to have masses only about 30% larger than the experimental value and small width <10-50 MeV. This result suggests that chiral interactions are very important in these systems and provide most of their mass. We explore the decaying patterns of the rho meson, in the absence of confinement. We argue that, in our model where only chiral forces are switched on, this meson decays dissociating into its quark anti-quark constituents.

Are There Diquarks in the Nucleon?

This work is devoted to the study of diquark correlations inside the nucleon. We analyze some matrix elements which encode information about the non-perturbative forces, in different color anti-triplet diquark channels. We suggest a lattice calculation to check the quark-diquark picture and clarify the role of instanton-mediated interactions. We study in detail the physical properties of the 0+ diquark, using the Random Instanton Liquid Model. We find that instanton forces are sufficiently strong to form a diquark bound-state, with a mass of ~500 MeV, which is compatible with earlier estimates. We also compute its electro-magnetic form factor and find that the diquark is a broad object, with a size comparable with that of the proton.

Generalized parton distributions of the nucleon in constituent quark models

Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are studied at the hadronic (nonperturbative) scale within different assumptions based on a relativistic constituent quark model. In particular, by means of a meson-cloud model we investigate the role of nonperturbative antiquark degrees of freedom and the valence quark contribution. A QCD evolution of the obtained GPDs is used to add perturbative effects and to investigate the GPDs' sensitivity to the nonperturbative ingredients of the calculation at larger (experimental) scale.

Nonperturbative versus perturbative effects in generalized parton distributions

Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are studied at the hadronic (nonperturbative) scale within different assumptions based on a relativistic constituent quark model. In particular, by means of a meson-cloud model we investigate the role of nonperturbative antiquark degrees of freedom and the valence quark contribution. A QCD evolution of the obtained GPDs is used to add perturbative effects and to investigate the GPDs' sensitivity to the nonperturbative ingredients of the calculation at larger (experimental) scale.

Instantons, diquarks and non-leptonic weak decays of hyperons

This work is devoted to the study of the non-perturbative contributions in non-leptonic hyperon decays. We show that the instanton-induced 't Hooft interaction can naturally explain the Delta I=1/2 rule, by generating quark-diquark clustering inside octet baryons. We compute P-wave and S-wave amplitudes in the Instanton Liquid Model (ILM), and find good agreement with experiment. We propose a model-independent procedure to test on the lattice if the leading quark-quark attraction in the 0^+ anti-triplet channel responsible for diquark structures in hadrons is originated by the interaction generated by quasi-classical fields or it is predominantly due to other perturbative and/or confining forces.

Helicity-dependent generalized parton distributions in constituent quark models

Helicity-dependent generalized parton distributions of the nucleon are derived from the overlap representation of generalized parton distributions using light-cone wave functions obtained in constituent quark models. Results from two different quark models are used also to study the angular momentum sum rule and the spin asymmetry in polarized electron scattering.

Linking generalized parton distributions to constituent quark models

The link between the nucleon generalized parton distributions and the non-diagonal one-body density matrix in momentum space is studied. Attention is focussed on the region where quark generalized parton distributions (GPD's) describe emission and reabsorption of a single active quark by the target nucleon. The correct covariant connection with wave functions used in any constituent quark model is established. Results obtained with different constituent quark models are presented for the unpolarized quark GPD's.

Spin force dependence of the parton distributions: the ratio $F_2^n(x,Q^2)/F_2^p(x,Q^2)$

Light-front Hamiltonian dynamics is used to relate low-energy constituent quark models to deep inelastic unpolarized structure functions of the nucleon. The approach incorporates the correct Pauli principle prescription consistently and it allows a transparent investigation of the effects due to the spin-dependent SU(6)-breaking terms in the quark model Hamiltonian. Both Goldstone-boson-exchange interaction and hyperfine-potential models are discussed in a unified scheme and a detailed comparison, between the two(apparently) different potential prescriptions, is presented.

Probing Relativistic Spin Effects in the Nucleon by Means of Drell-Yan Processes

Significant differences between transverse and longitudinal polarized parton distributions are found at low energies within a light-front covariant quark model of the nucleon. These differences are due to relativistic spin effects introduced by the Melosh rotations and survive evolution to higher $Q^2$ scales. A specific observable related to double-spin asymmetries in lepton pair production in polarized hadron-hadron collisions is defined. The possibility of assessing the relevance of these relativistic spin effects in future experiments at RHIC and HERA--$\vec{N}$ is discussed.

Meson exchange and nucleon polarizabilities in the quark model

Modifications to the nucleon electric polarizability induced by pion and sigma exchange in the q-q potentials are studied by means of sum rule techniques within a non-relativistic quark model. Contributions from meson exchange interactions are found to be small and in general reduce the quark core polarizability for a number of hybrid and one-boson-exchange q-q models. These results can be explained by the constraints that the baryonic spectrum impose on the short range behavior of the mesonic interactions.

Orbital Angular Momentum Parton Distributions in Light-Front Dynamics

We study the quark angular momentum distribution in the nucleon within a light-front covariant quark model. Special emphasis is put into the orbital angular momentum: a quantity which is very sensitive to the relativistic treatment of the spin in a light-front dynamical approach. Discrepancies with the predictions of the low-energy traditional quark models where relativistic spin effects are neglected, are visible also after perturbative evolution to higher momentum scales. Orbital angular momentum distributions and their contribution to the spin sum rule are calculated for different phenomenological mass operators and compared with the results of the MIT bag model.

Polarized Parton Distributions in Light-Front Dynamics

We present a consistent calculation of the structure functions within a light-front constituent quark model of the nucleon. Relativistic effects and the relevance of the covariance constraints are analyzed for polarized parton distributions. Various models, which differ in their gluonic structure at the hadronic scale, are investigated. The results of the full covariant calculation are compared with those of a non-relativistic approximation to show the structure and magnitude of the differences. It is also shown how measurements of transversity in doubly polarized Drell-Yan lepton pair production are a clearcut sign of covariance requirements for the spin.

Parton distributions in a constituent quark scenario

A simple picture of the constituent quark as a composite system of point-like partons is used to construct the unpolarized and polarized parton distributions by a convolution between constituent quark momentum distributions and constituent quark structure functions. We achieve good agreement with experiments in the unpolarized, as well as, in the polarized case. When our results are compared with similar calculations using non-composite constituent quarks, the accord with the experiments of the present scheme is impressive. We conclude that DIS data are consistent with a low energy scenario dominated by composite constituents of the nucleon.

Polarized Parton Distributiions and Light-Front Dynamics

We present a consistent calculation of the structure functions within a light-front constituent quark model of the nucleon. Relativistic effects and the relevance of the covariance constraints are analyzed for both polarized and unpolarized parton distributions. Various models, which differ in their gluonic structure at the hadronic scale, are investigated. The results of the full covariant calculation are compared with those of a non-relativistic approximation to show the structure and magnitude of the differences.

Scaling approach to higher-twist corrections

Bjorken scaling is violetd. At large $x$-values ($0.7 \lesssim x \leq 1$) the violation is mainly attributed to $\propto 1/Q^2$ (higher-twist) corrections. We discuss how to incorporate such corrections by using a new scaling variable $\bar x(x,Q^2)$ which accounts for the non-perturbative effects due to the confining parton interaction in the final state. The approach can accomodate also the remaining QCD logarithmic corrections and the behaviour of the $F_2(x,Q^2)$ structure functions is reproduced, in a quite natural way, within a wide kinematical range.
