Electronic states bound by repulsive potentials in graphene irradiated by a circularly polarized electromagnetic field

In the framework of the Floquet theory of periodically driven quantum systems, it is demonstrated that irradiation of graphene by a circularly polarized electromagnetic field induces an attractive area in the core of repulsive potentials. Consequently, the quasi-stationary electron states bound by the repulsive potentials appear. The difference between such field-induced states in graphene and usual systems with the parabolic dispersion of electrons is discussed and possible manifestations of these states in electronic transport and optical spectra of graphene are considered.

Optically induced resonant tunneling of electrons in nanostructures

We developed the theory of elastic electron tunneling through a potential barrier driven by a strong high-frequency electromagnetic field. It is demonstrated that the driven barrier can be considered as a stationary two-barrier potential which contains the quasi-stationary electron states confined between these two barriers. When the energy of an incident electron coincides with the energy of the quasi-stationary state, the driven barrier becomes fully transparent for the electron (the resonant tunneling). The developed theory is applied to describe electron transport through a quantum point contact irradiated by an electromagnetic wave.

Elementary excitations in the hybrid Bose-Fermi system induced by circularly polarized light in a two-dimensional gas of charge carriers with different masses

We developed a theory describing elementary excitations in the Bose-Fermi system induced by circularly polarized light in a two-dimensional (2D) gas of charge carriers with different masses. In such a hybrid system, the Fermi subsystem is a degenerate Fermi gas, whereas the Bose subsystem is a condensate of the light-induced composite bosons consisting of two fermions (electrons or holes) with different effective masses. The interaction of the single-particle excitations and the collective excitations (plasmons) in the Fermi subsystem with the Bogoliubov collective modes (bogolons) in the Bose subsystem is analyzed. The renormalization and damping (lifetime) of the excitations are calculated, and the possibility of their experimental observation is discussed. The developed theory can be applied to describe 2D condensed-matter structures containing charge carriers with different effective masses, including transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers and semiconductor quantum wells.

Optically induced delocalization of electrons bound by attractive potentials

Within the Floquet theory of periodically driven quantum systems, we demonstrate that a circularly polarized off-resonant electromagnetic field can destroy the electron states bound by three-dimensional attractive potentials. As a consequence, the optically induced delocalization of bound electrons appears. The effect arises from the changing of topological structure of a potential landscape under a circularly polarized off-resonant electromagnetic field which turns simply connected potentials into doubly connected ones. Possible manifestations of the effect are discussed for conduction electrons in condensed-matter structures.

Photogalvanic transport in fluctuating Ising superconductors

In a two-dimensional noncentrosymmetric Ising superconductor in the fluctuating regime under the action of a uniform external electromagnetic field there emerge two contributions to the photogalvanic effect due to the trigonal warping of the valleys. The first contribution stems from the current of the electron gas in its normal state, while the second contribution is of Aslamazov-Larkin nature: it originates from the presence of fluctuating Cooper pairs when the ambient temperature approaches (from above) the temperature of superconducting transition in the sample. The way to lift the valley degeneracy is the application of a weak out-of-plane external magnetic field producing a Zeeman effect. The Boltzmann equations approach for the electron gas in the normal state and the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations for the fluctuating Cooper pairs allow for the study of the photogalvanic current in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide Ising superconductors.

All-optical control of excitons in semiconductor quantum wells

Applying the Floquet theory, we developed the method to control excitonic properties of semiconductor quantum wells by a high-frequency electromagnetic field. It is demonstrated, particularly, that the field induces the blue shift of exciton emission from the quantum wells and narrows width of the corresponding spectral line. As a consequence, the field strongly modifies optical properties of the quantum wells and, therefore, can be used to tune characteristics of the optoelectronic devices based on them.

Optically induced hybrid Bose-Fermi system in quantum wells with different charge carriers

It is demonstrated theoretically that the circularly polarized irradiation of two-dimensional conducting systems can produce the composite bosons consisting of two electrons with different effective masses (different charge carriers), which are stable due to the Fermi sea of conduction electrons. As a result, the optically induced mixture of paired electrons and normal conduction electrons (the hybrid Bose-Fermi system) appears. Elementary excitations in such a hybrid system are analyzed and possible manifestations of the light-induced electron pairing are discussed for semiconductor quantum wells.

Optically induced persistent current in carbon nanotubes

We demonstrate theoretically that an off-resonant circularly polarized electromagnetic field can induce a persistent current in carbon nanotubes, which corresponds to electron rotation about the nanotube axis. As a consequence, the nanotubes acquire magnetic moment along the axis, which depends on their crystal structure and can be detected in state-of-the-art measurements. This effect and related phenomena are analyzed within the developed Floquet theory describing the electronic properties of the nanotubes irradiated by the field.

Impurity-band optical transitions in two-dimensional Dirac materials under strain-induced synthetic magnetic field

We develop a theory of optical transitions in Coulomb impurity-doped two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers and study the transitions from the spin-resolved valence band to the (Coulomb) donor and acceptor impurities under the influence of a synthetic valley-selective magnetic field produced by a mechanical strain. It is shown that the optical properties of the system are determined by the strength of the synthetic magnetic field, which uncovers an experimental tool, which can be used to manipulate the properties of two-dimensional materials in valley magneto-optoelectronics.

Light-induced bound electron states in two-dimensional systems: Contribution to electron transport

In two-dimensional (2D) electron systems, an off-resonant high-frequency circularly polarized electromagnetic field can induce the quasi-stationary bound electron states of repulsive scatterers. As a consequence, the resonant scattering of conduction electrons through the quasi-stationary states and the capture of conduction electrons by the states appear. The present theory describes the transport properties of 2D electron gas irradiated by a circularly polarized light, which are modified by these processes. Particularly, it is demonstrated that irradiation of 2D electron systems by the off-resonant field results in the quantum correction to conductivity of resonant kind.

Floquet engineering of the Luttinger Hamiltonian

Within the Floquet theory of periodically driven quantum systems, we developed the theory of light-induced modification of electronic states in semiconductor materials described by the Luttinger Hamiltonian (the electronic term $Γ_8$). Particularly, exact solutions of the Floquet problem are found for the band edge in the cases of linearly and circularly polarized irradiation. It is shown that the irradiation changes electron effective masses near the band edge, induces anisotropy of the electron dispersion and splits the bands. It is demonstrated that the light-induced band splitting strongly depends on the light polarization. Namely, the circularly polarized light acts similarly to a stationary magnetic field and lifts the spin degeneracy of electron branches, whereas a linearly polarized light does not affect the spin degeneracy and only splits the bands in the center of the Brillouin zone. The present theory can be applied to describe electronic properties of various semiconductor structures irradiated by an electromagnetic field in the broad frequency range.

Interplay between collective modes in hybrid electron gas-superconductor structures

We study hybridization of collective plasmon and Carlson-Goldman-Artemenko-Volkov modes in a hybrid system, consisting of a two-dimensional layers of electron gas in the normal state and superconductor, coupled by long-range Coulomb forces. The interaction between these collective modes is not possible in a regular single-layer two-dimensional system since they exist in non-overlapping domains of dimensionless parameter $ωτ$, where $ω$ is the external electromagnetic field frequency and $τ$ is electron scattering time. Thus, in a single-layer structure, these modes are mutually exclusive. However, the coupling may become possible in a hybrid system consisting of two separated in space materials with different properties, in particular, the electron scattering time. We investigate the electromagnetic power absorption by the hybrid system and reveal the conditions necessary for the hybridization of collective modes.

Photon drag of superconducting fluctuations in 2D systems

The theory of photon drag of superconducting fluctuations in the two-dimensional electron gas is developed. It is shown that the frequency dependence of the induced current is qualitatively similar to the case of photon drag of conventional two-dimensional degenerate electron gas. With the decreasing temperature the magnitude of the effect increases dramatically and the current of superconducting fluctuations carries an additional power of reduced temperature in comparison with the Aslamazov-Larkin contribution. The magnitude of the developed effect is expected sufficient to be visible against the conventional photocurrent background.

Coulomb drag of excitons in Bose-Fermi mixtures

We develop a microscopic theory of the Coulomb drag effect in a hybrid system consisting of spatially separated two-dimensional quantum gases of degenerate electrons and dipolar excitons. We consider both the normal-phase and condensate regimes of the exciton subsystem and investigate the cross-mobility of the system being the kinetic coefficient, which couples the static electric field applied to the electron layer with the particle density current (flux) in the exciton subsystem. We study the temperature dependence of the cross-mobility and its dependence on the interlayer separation. We show that exciton-exciton interaction plays a dramatic role. If the exciton gas is in the normal phase, then the screening of interlayer interaction by the exciton subsystem results in an exponential damping of the cross-mobility with the decrease of temperature, while at low temperatures, the interactions result in a robust bosonic transport due to the emergence of the Bogoliubov quasiparticles.

Proposal for frequency-selective photodetector based on the resonant photon drag effect in a condensate of indirect excitons

We present a microscopic theory of a photon drag effect that appears in a Bose-Einstein condensate of neutral particles, considering indirect excitons in a double quantum well nanostructure under the action of a circularly polarized electromagnetic field. It is shown that the dynamical polarization of excitons results in a resonant behavior of the exciton photon drag flux when the frequency of light is close to the gap between two energy levels of internal exciton motion. Specifically, we consider the ground and first excited energy states characterized by the angular momentum difference $\pm 1$, and thus, the helicity of light matters. We show that the resulting drag current is caused by both Bose-condensed particles and the particles in the normal state. As a result, the total current represents a superposition of thresholdlike and resonant contributions, - property, which can be used in frequency-selective photodetection.

Magnetoplasmon Fano resonance in Bose-Fermi mixtures

We investigate theoretically the magnetoplasmon (cyclotron) resonance in a hybrid system consisting of spatially separated two-dimensional layers of electron and dipolar exciton gases coupled via the Coulomb forces. We study the dynamics of this system under the action of weak alternating external electromagnetic field in the presence of uniform magnetic field, perpendicular to the layers. We reveal that the electromagnetic power absorption exhibits a double-resonance spectrum. We show that the first resonance is associated with the conventional well-studied magnetoplasmon excitations of the electron gas and it has a standard Lorentzian shape, whereas the second resonance is a peculiarity attributed to the Bose-condensed exciton gas. Further, we explicitly demonstrate that the spectrum of the system exhibits an asymmetric Fano-type profile, where the excitonic peak is extremely narrow in comparison with the magnetoplasmon one. We show that the shape of the resonance and the position of the peaks depends on the magnitude of the applied magnetic field, exciton condensate density and exciton-impurity scattering time. In particular, the Fano profile turns into a Lorentzian shape with decreasing exciton-impurity scattering time and the position of the plasmon-associated resonance is mainly sensitive and determined by the magnetic field strength, whereas the exciton-condensate peak position is determined by exciton condensate density. It opens the experimental possibility to determine the latter quantity in cyclotron resonance experiment.

Bogolon-mediated electron capture by impurities in hybrid Bose-Fermi systems

We investigate the processes of electron capture by a Coulomb impurity center residing in a hybrid system consisting of spatially separated two-dimensional layers of electron and Bose-condensed dipolar exciton gases coupled via the Coulomb forces. We calculate the probability of the electron capture accompanied by the emission of a single Bogoliubov excitation (bogolon), similar to regular phonon-mediated scattering in solids. Further, we study the electron capture mediated by the emission of a pair of bogolons in a single capture event and show that these processes not only should be treated in the same order of the perturbation theory, but also they give more important contribution than single bogolon-mediated capture, in contrast with regular phonon scattering.

Rayleigh surface wave interaction with 2D exciton Bose-Einstein condensate

We describe the interaction of the Rayleigh surface acoustic wave (SAW) traveling on the semiconductor substrate and interacting with excitonic gas in a double quantum well located on the substrate surface. We study the SAW attenuation and its velocity renormalization due to coupling with excitons. Both the deformation potential and piezoelectric mechanisms of the SAW-exciton interaction are considered. We focus our attention on the frequency and excitonic density dependencies of the SAW absorption coefficient and velocity renormalization at temperatures both above and well below the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation of excitonic gas. We demonstrate that the SAW attenuation and velocity renormalization are strongly different below and above the critical temperature.
