Superscaling predictions for neutrino-induced charged-current charged pion production at MiniBooNE

Superscaling approximation (SuSA) predictions to neutrino-induced charged-current charged pion production in the Δ-resonance region are explored under MiniBooNE experimental conditions. The results obtained within SuSA for the flux-averaged double-differential cross sections of the π+ production for the ν_μ+CH_2 reaction as a function of the muon kinetic energy and of the scattering angle, the cross sections averaged over the angle, the total cross section for the π+ production, as well as CC1π+ to CCQE cross section ratio are compared with the corresponding MiniBooNE experimental data. The SuSA predictions are in good agreement with data on neutrino flux average cross-sections, but a somewhat different dependence on the neutrino energy is predicted than the one resulting from the experimental analysis.

Scaling Function, Spectral Function and Nucleon Momentum Distribution in Nuclei

The link between the scaling function extracted from the analysis of (e,e') cross sections and the spectral function/momentum distribution in nuclei is revisited. Several descriptions of the spectral function based on the independent particle model are employed, together with the inclusion of nucleon correlations, and effects of the energy dependence arising from the width of the hole states are investigated. Although some of these approaches provide rough overall agreement with data, they are not found to be capable of reproducing one of the distinctive features of the experimental scaling function, namely its asymmetry. However, the addition of final-state interactions, incorporated in the present study using either relativistic mean field theory or via a complex optical potential, does lead to asymmetric scaling functions in accordance with data. The present analysis seems to indicate that final-state interactions constitute an essential ingredient and are required to provide a proper description of the experimental scaling function.

Scaling Function and Nucleon Momentum Distribution

Scaling studies of inclusive quasielastic electron scattering reactions have been used in the past as a basic tool to obtain information on the nucleon momentum distribution in nuclei. However, the connection between the scaling function, extracted from the analysis of cross section data, and the spectral function only exists assuming very restricted approximations. We revisit the basic expressions involved in scaling studies and how they can be linked to the nucleon momentum distribution. In particular, the analysis applied in the past to the so-called scaling region, {\it i.e.,} negative values of the scaling variable $y$, is extended here to positive $y$, since a "universal" superscaling function has been extracted from the analysis of the separated longitudinal data. This leads to results that clearly differ from the ones based solely on the negative-$y$ scaling region, providing new information on how the energy and momentum are distributed in the spectral function.

Momentum distributions in medium and heavy exotic nuclei

We study nucleon momentum distributions of even-even isotopes of Ni, Kr, and Sn in the framework of deformed self-consistent mean-field Skyrme HF+BCS method, as well as of theoretical correlation methods based on light-front dynamics and local density approximation. The isotopic sensitivities of the calculated neutron and proton momentum distributions are investigated together with the effects of pairing and nucleon-nucleon correlations. The role of deformation on the momentum distributions in even-even Kr isotopes is discussed. For comparison, the results for the momentum distribution in nuclear matter are also presented.

Longitudinal and Transverse Scaling Functions within the Coherent Density Fluctuation Model

We extend our previous description of the superscaling phenomenon in inclusive electron scattering within the Coherent Density Fluctuation Model (CDFM). This model is a natural extension to finite nuclei of the Relativistic Fermi Gas Model (RFG) within which the scaling variable $ψ^{\prime}$ was introduced. In this work we propose a new modified CDFM approach to calculate the total, longitudinal and transverse scaling functions built up from the hadronic tensor and the longitudinal and transverse response functions in the RFG. We test the superscaling behavior of the new CDFM scaling functions by calculating the cross sections of electron scattering (in QE- and $Δ$-region for nuclei with $12\leq A\leq208$ at different energies and angles) and comparing to available experimental data. The new modified CDFM approach is extended to calculate charge-changing neutrino and antineutrino scattering on $^{12}$C at 1 GeV incident energy.

Superscaling and Charge-Changing Neutrino Scattering from Nuclei in the $\boldsymbol Δ$-Region beyond the Relativistic Fermi Gas Model

The superscaling analysis using the scaling function obtained within the coherent density fluctuation model is extended to calculate charge-changing neutrino and antineutrino scattering on $^{12}$C at energies from 1 to 2 GeV not only in the quasielastic but also in the delta excitation region. The results are compared with those obtained using the scaling functions from the relativistic Fermi gas model and from the superscaling analysis of inclusive scattering of electrons from nuclei.

Superscaling and Neutral Current Quasielastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering beyond the Relativistic Fermi Gas Model

The superscaling analysis is extended to include quasielastic (QE) scattering via the weak neutral current of neutrinos and antineutrinos from nuclei. The scaling function obtained within the coherent density fluctuation model (used previously in calculations of QE inclusive electron and charge-changing (CC) neutrino scattering) is applied to neutral current neutrino and antineutrino scattering with energies of 1 GeV from $^{12}$C with a proton and neutron knockout (u-channel inclusive processes). The results are compared with those obtained using the scaling function from the relativistic Fermi gas model and the scaling function as determined from the superscaling analysis (SuSA) of QE electron scattering.

Superscaling in dilute Fermi gas and its relation to general properties of the nucleon momentum distribution in nuclei

The superscaling observed in inclusive electron scattering is described within the dilute Fermi gas model with interaction between the particles. The comparison with the relativistic Fermi gas (RFG) model without interaction shows an improvement in the explanation of the scaling function $f(ψ')$ in the region $ψ' < -1$, where the RFG result is $f(ψ') = 0$. It is found that the behavior of $f(ψ')$ for $ψ' < -1$ depends on the particular form of the general power-law asymptotics of the momentum distribution $n(k)\sim 1/ k^{4+m}$ at large $k$. The best agreement with the empirical scaling function is found for $m\simeq 4.5$ in agreement with the asymptotics of $n(k)$ in the coherent density fluctuation model where $m = 4$. Thus, superscaling gives information about the asymptotics of $n(k)$ and the NN forces.

Superscaling analysis of inclusive electron scattering and its extension to charge-changing neutrino-nucleus cross sections beyond the relativistic Fermi gas approach

Superscaling analyses of inclusive electron scattering from nuclei are extended from the quasielastic processes to the delta excitation region. The calculations of $(e,e^\prime)$ cross sections for the target nucleus $^{12}$C at various incident electron energies are performed using scaling functions $f(ψ^{\prime})$ obtained in approaches going beyond the mean-field approximation, such as the coherent density fluctuation model (CDFM) and the one based on the light-front dynamics (LFD) method. The results are compared with those obtained using the relativistic Fermi gas (RFG) model and the extended RFG model (ERFG). Our method utilizes in an equivalent way both basic nuclear quantities, density and momentum distributions, showing their role for the scaling and superscaling phenomena. The approach is extended to consider scaling function for medium and heavy nuclei with $Z\neq N$ for which the proton and neutron densities are not similar. The asymmetry of the CDFM quasielastic scaling function is introduced, simulating in a phenomenological way the effects which violate the symmetry for $ψ^{\prime}\geq 0$ including the role of the final-state interaction (FSI). The superscaling properties of the electron scattering are used to predict charge-changing neutrino-nucleus cross sections at energies from 1 to 2 GeV. A comparison with the results of the ERFG model is made. The analyses make it possible to gain information about the nucleon correlation effects on both local density and nucleon momentum distributions.

Scaling Functions and Superscaling in Medium and Heavy Nuclei

The scaling function $f(ψ')$ for medium and heavy nuclei with $Z\neq N$ for which the proton and neutron densities are not similar is constructed within the coherent density fluctuation model (CDFM) as a sum of the proton and neutron scaling functions. The latter are calculated in the cases of $^{62}$Ni, $^{82}$Kr, $^{118}$Sn, and $^{197}$Au nuclei on the basis of the corresponding proton and neutron density distributions which are obtained in deformed self-consistent mean-field Skyrme HF+BCS method. The results are in a reasonable agreement with the empirical data from the inclusive electron scattering from nuclei showing superscaling for negative values of $ψ'$, including those smaller than -1. This is an improvement over the relativistic Fermi gas (RFG) model predictions where $f(ψ')$ becomes abruptly zero for $ψ'\leq -1$. It is also an improvement over the CDFM calculations made in the past for nuclei with $Z\neq N$ assuming that the neutron density is equal to the proton one and using only the phenomenological charge density.

Superscaling, Scaling Functions and Nucleon Momentum Distributions in Nuclei

The scaling functions $f(ψ')$ and $F(y)$ from the $ψ'$- and $y$-scaling analyses of inclusive electron scattering from nuclei are explored within the coherent density fluctuation model (CDFM). In addition to the CDFM formulation in which the local density distribution is used, we introduce a new equivalent formulation of the CDFM based on the one-body nucleon momentum distribution (NMD). Special attention is paid to the different ways in which the excitation energy of the residual system is taken into account in $y$- and $ψ'$-scaling. Both functions, $f(ψ')$ and $F(y)$, are calculated using different NMD's and are compared with the experimental data for a wide range of nuclei. The good description of the data for $y < 0$ and $ψ' < 0$ (including $ψ'< -1$) makes it possible to show the sensitivity of the calculated scaling functions to the peculiarities of the NMD's in different regions of momenta. It is concluded that the existing data on the $ψ'$- and $y$-scaling are informative for the NMD's at momenta not larger than $2.0 ÷2.5$ fm$^{-1}$. The CDFM allows us to study simultaneously on the same footing the role of both basic quantities, the momentum and density distributions, for the description of scaling and superscaling phenomena in nuclei.

Superscaling in Nuclei: A Search for Scaling Function Beyond the Relativistic Fermi Gas Model

We construct a scaling function $f(ψ^{\prime})$ for inclusive electron scattering from nuclei within the Coherent Density Fluctuation Model (CDFM). The latter is a natural extension to finite nuclei of the Relativistic Fermi Gas (RFG) model within which the scaling variable $ψ^{\prime}$ was introduced by Donnelly and collaborators. The calculations show that the high-momentum components of the nucleon momentum distribution in the CDFM and their similarity for different nuclei lead to quantitative description of the superscaling in nuclei. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data for different transfer momenta showing superscaling for negative values of $ψ^{\prime}$, including those smaller than -1.

Jastrow Two-nucleon Overlap Functions and Cross Sections of $^{16}$O$(e,e^{\prime}NN)^{14}$C Reactions

Using the relationship between the two-particle overlap functions (TOF's) and the two-body density matrix (TDM), the TOF's for $^{16}$O$(e,e^{\prime}pp)^{14}$C reaction are calculated on the basis of TDM obtained with a Jastrow-type approach. The main contributions of the removal of $^1S$ and $^3P$ $pp$-pairs from $^{16}$O are taken into account in the calculations of the cross sections of the $^{16}$O$(e,e^{\prime}pp)^{14}$C reaction using the Jastrow TOF's. The contributions of the one-body and two-body delta currents are considered. The results are compared with the calculations using TOF's from other approaches.

Structural Studies of Many-Body Systems and (e,e'p) Reaction Cross Sections

Studies of one-body density matrices (ODM) are performed in various correlation methods, such as the Jastrow method, the correlated basis function method, the Green's function method and the generator coordinate method aiming to extract the absolute spectroscopic factors and overlap functions (OF) for one-nucleon removal reactions from the ODM of the target nucleus. The advantage of this method is that it avoids the complicated task of calculating the total nuclear spectral function. The procedure for extracting bound-state OF's has been applied to make calculations of the cross sections of the $(e,e^{\prime}p)$ reaction on the closed-shell nuclei $^{16}$O and $^{40}$Ca as well as on the open-shell nucleus $^{32}$S consistently (using the same OF's) with the cross sections of $(p,d)$ and $(γ,p)$ reactions on the same nuclei. The analyses of the reaction cross sections and the spectroscopic factors and the comparison with the experimental data show the particular importance of these OF's, since they contain effects of nucleon correlations (short-range and/or long-range) which are accounted for to different extent in the theoretical methods considered.

Two-proton overlap functions in the Jastrow correlation method and cross section of the $^{16}$O$(e,e^{\prime}pp)^{14}$C$_{\rm g.s.}$ reaction

Using the relationship between the two-particle overlap functions (TOF's) and the two-body density matrix (TDM), the TOF's for the $^{16}$O$(e,e^{\prime}pp)^{14}$C$_{\rm g.s.}$ reaction are calculated on the basis of a TDM obtained within the Jastrow correlation method. The main contributions of the removal of $^1S_0$ and $^3P_1$ $pp$ pairs from $^{16}$O are considered in the calculation of the cross section of the $^{16}$O$(e,e^{\prime}pp)^{14}$C$_{\rm g.s.}$ reaction using the Jastrow TOF's which include short-range correlations (SRC). The results are compared with the cross sections calculated with different theoretical treatments of the TOF's.

Y-Scaling Analysis of the Deuteron Within the Light-Front Dynamics Method

The concept of relativistic scaling is applied to describe the most recent data from inclusive electron-deuteron scattering at large momentum transfer. We calculate the asymptotic scaling function f(y) of the deuteron using its relationship with the nucleon momentum distribution. The latter is obtained in the framework of the relativistic light-front dynamics (LFD) method, in which the deuteron is described by six invariant functions f_{i} (i=1,...,6) instead of two (S and D waves) in the nonrelativistic case. Comparison of the LFD asymptotic scaling function with other calculations using $S$ and $D$ waves corresponding to various nucleon-nucleon potentials, as well as with the Bethe-Salpeter result is made. It is shown that for |y|> 400 MeV/c the differences between the LFD and the nonrelativistic scaling functions become larger.

Nucleon momentum distribution in deuteron and other nuclei within the light-front dynamics method

The relativistic light-front dynamics (LFD) method has been shown to give a correct description of the most recent data for the deuteron monopole and quadrupole charge form factors obtained at the Jefferson Laboratory for elastic electron-deuteron scattering for six values of the squared momentum transfer between 0.66 and 1.7 (GeV/c)$^{2}$. The good agreement with the data is in contrast with the results of the existing non-relativistic approaches. In this work we firstly make a complementary test of the LFD applying it to calculate another important characteristic, the nucleon momentum distribution $n(q)$ of the deuteron using six invariant functions $f_{i}$ $(i=1,...,6)$ instead of two ($S$- and $D$-waves) in the nonrelativistic case. The comparison with the $y$-scaling data shows the decisive role of the function $f_{5}$ which at $q\geq$ 500 MeV/c exceeds all other $f$-functions (as well as the $S$- and $D$-waves) for the correct description of $n(q)$ of the deuteron in the high-momentum region. Comparison with other calculations using $S$- and $D$-waves corresponding to various nucleon-nucleon potentials is made. Secondly, using clear indications that the high-momentum components of $n(q)$ in heavier nuclei are related to those in the deuteron, we develop an approach within the natural orbital representation to calculate $n(q)$ in $(A,Z)$-nuclei on the basis of the deuteron momentum distribution. As examples, $n(q)$ in $^{4}$He, $^{12}$C and $^{56}$Fe are calculated and good agreement with the $y$-scaling data is obtained.

Generator coordinate method calculations of one-nucleon removal reactions on $^{40}$Ca

An approach to the Generator Coordinate Method (GCM) using Skyrme-type effective forces and Woods-Saxon construction potential is applied to calculate the single-particle proton and neutron overlap functions in $^{40}$Ca. The relationship between the bound-state overlap functions and the one-body density matrix has been used. These overlap functions are applied to calculate the cross sections of one-nucleon removal reactions such as ($e,e'p$), ($γ,p$) and ($p,d$) on $^{40}$Ca on the same theoretical footing. A consistent description of data for the different reactions is achieved. The shapes of the experimental cross sections for transitions to the $3/2^{+}$ ground state and the first $1/2^{+}$ excited state of the residual nuclei are well reproduced by the overlap functions obtained within the GCM. An additional spectroscopic factor accounting for correlations not included in the overlap function must be applied to the calculated results to reproduce the size of the experimental cross sections.
