Theory of Raman scattering from Leggett's collective mode in a multiband superconductor: Application to MgB$_2$

In 1966 Leggett used a two-band superconductor to show that a new collective mode could exist at low temperatures, corresponding to a counter-flow of the superconducting condensates in each band. Here, the theory of electronic Raman scattering in a superconductor by Klein and Dierker (1984) is extended to a multiband superconductor. Raman scattering creates particle/hole pairs. In the relevant $A_{1g}$\ symmetry, the attraction that produces pairing necessarily couples excitations of superconducting pairs to these p/h excitations. In the Appendix it is shown that for zero wave vector transfer $% q$ this coupling modifies the Raman response and makes the long-range Coulomb correction null. The 2-band result is applied to MgB$_{2}$ where this coupling activates Leggett's collective mode. His simple limiting case is obtained when the interband attractive potential is decreased to a value well below that given by LDA theory. The peak from Leggett's mode is studied as the potential is increased through the theoretical value: With realistic MgB$_{2}$\ parameters, the peak broadens through decay into the continuum above the smaller ($π$ band) superconducting gap. Finite $q$ effects are also taken into account, yielding a Raman peak that agrees well in energy with the experimental result by Blumberg \textit{et el.} (2007). This approach is also applied to the $q=0$, 2-band model of the Fe-pnictides considered by Chubukov \textit{et al.}(2009).

Observation of Leggett's collective mode in a multi-band MgB2 superconductor

We report observation of Leggett's collective mode in a multi-band MgB2 superconductor with T_c=39K arising from the fluctuations in the relative phase between two superconducting condensates. The novel mode is observed by Raman spectroscopy at 9.4 meV in the fully symmetric scattering channel. The observed mode frequency is consistent with theoretical considerations based on the first principle computations.

Resonance mode in $B_{1g}$ Raman scattering -- a way to distinguish between spin-fluctuation and phonon-mediated $d-$wave superconductivity

We argue that Raman scattering in $B_{1g}$ symmetry allows one to distinguish between phonon-mediated and magnetically-mediated $d-$wave superconductivity. In spin mediated superconductors, $B_{1g}$ Raman intensity develops a resonance at a frequency $ω_{res} < 2Δ_{max}$, whose origin is similar to a neutron resonance. In phonon-mediated $d-$wave superconductors, such a resonance does not develop. Several extensions of the argument are presented.

Negative isotope effect of a BCS-like gap; an inelastic light scattering study

In a prior study of the boron isotope effect on the transition temperature ($T_c$) of $R$Ni$_2$B$_2$C ($R$ = Y, Lu) system, a positive isotope effect was observed, e.g., $T_{c}(^{10}B)> T_{c}(^{11}B)$. BCS theory predicts that the superconducting gap at zero temperature ($Δ_0$) is proportional to $T_c$. Therefore, the gap should also show a positive boron isotope effect. On the contrary, in an inelastic light scattering study, we report a negative boron isotope effect on the energy $Ω$ of the gap-like feature in B$_{2g}$ symmetry, e.g., $Ω(^{10}B)< Ω(^{11}B)$. The origin of the effect is discussed in terms of selective probing of a non-conventional electron-phonon interaction on part of the Fermi surface, probably near the X point in the Brillouin zone.

A study of the superconducting gap in RNi$_2$B$_2$C (R = Y, Lu) single crystals by inelastic light scattering

Superconductivity-induced changes in the electronic Raman scattering response were observed for the RNi$_2$B$_2$C (R = Y, Lu) system in different scattering geometries. In the superconducting state, 2$Δ$-like peaks were observed in A$_{1g}$, B$_{1g}$, and B$_{2g}$ spectra from single crystals. The peaks in A$_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ symmetries are significantly sharper and stronger than the peak in B$_{1g}$ symmetry. The temperature dependence of the frequencies of the 2$Δ$-like peaks shows typical BCS-type behavior, but the apparent values of the $2Δ$ gap are strongly anisotropic for both systems. In addition, for both YNi$_2$B$_2$C and LuNi$_2$B$_2$C systems, there exists reproducible scattering strength below the $2Δ$ gap which is roughly linear to the frequency in B$_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ symmetries. This discovery of scattering below the gap in non-magnetic borocarbide superconductors, which are thought to be conventional BCS-type superconductors, is a challenge for current understanding of superconductivity in this system.

Unconventional electronic Raman spectra of borocarbide superconductors

Borocarbide superconductors, which are thought to be conventional BCS-type superconductors, are not so conventional in several electronic Raman properties. Anisotropic gap-like features and finite scattering strength below the gap were observed for the $R$Ni$_2$B$_2$C ($R$ = Lu, Y) systems in our previous study. The effects of Co-doping on the 2$Δ$ gap-like features and the finite scattering strength below and above the gap are studied in $R$ = Lu (B = B$^{11}$) system. In superconducting states, Co-doping strongly suppresses the 2$Δ$ peak in both B$_{2g}$ and B$_{1g}$ symmetries. Raman cross-section calculation which includes inelastic scattering shows a relatively good fit to the features above the 2$Δ$ peak, while it does not fully account for the features below the peak.

Selection Rules for Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering from Tetragonal Copper-Oxides

We demonstrate the utility of point group representation theory for symmetry analysis in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. From its polarization-dependence, we show that a 5 eV inelastic feature in Sr2CuO2Cl2 has pure B1g symmetry and assign it to a transition in the cell-perturbation calculations of Simon, et. al. [Phys. Rev. B., 54, R3780 (1996)]. We discuss how Raman selection rules are broken at nonzero momentum transfer and how this can also act as a probe of wave function symmetry.

Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering from Valence Excitations in Insulating Copper-Oxides

We report resonant inelastic x-ray measurements of insulating La$_2$CuO$_4$ and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ taken with the incident energy tuned near the Cu K absorption edge. We show that the spectra are well described in a shakeup picture in 3rd order perturbation theory which exhibits both incoming and outgoing resonances, and demonstrate how to extract a spectral function from the raw data. We conclude by showing {\bf q}-dependent measurements of the charge transfer gap.

C-axis electronic Raman scattering in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}

We report a c-axis-polarized electronic Raman scattering study of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} single crystals. In the normal state, a resonant electronic continuum extends to 1.5 eV and gains significant intensity as the incoming photon energy increases. In the superconducting state, a coherence 2Δpeak appears around 50 meV, with a suppression of the scattering intensity at frequencies below the peak position. The peak energy, which is higher than that seen with in-plane polarizations, signifies distinctly different dynamics of quasiparticle excitations created with out-of-plane polarization.

Evolution of Magnetic and Superconducting Fluctuations with Doping of High-Tc Superconductors

Electronic Raman scattering from high- and low-energy excitations was studied as a function of temperature, extent of hole doping, and energy of the incident photons in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8 \pm δ} superconductors. For underdoped superconductors, short range antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations were found to persist with hole doping, and doped single holes were found to be incoherent in the AF environment. Above the superconducting (SC) transition temperature T_c, the system exhibits a sharp Raman resonance of B_{1g} symmetry and energy of 75 meV and a pseudogap for electron-hole excitations below 75 meV, a manifestation of a partially coherent state forming from doped incoherent quasi particles. The occupancy of the coherent state increases with cooling until phase ordering at T_c produces a global SC state.

Charge and Spin Dynamics of an Ordered Stripe Phase in La_(1 2/3)Sr_(1/3)NiO_4 by Raman Spectroscopy

For La_(1 2/3)Sr_(1/3)NiO_4 -- a commensurately doped Mott-Hubbard system -- charge- and spin-ordering in a stripe phase has been investigated by phononic and magnetic Raman scattering. Formation of a superlattice and an opening of a pseudo-gap in the electron-hole excitation spectra as well as two types of double-spin excitations -- within the antiferromagnetic domain and across the domain wall -- are observed below the charge-ordering transition. The temperature dependence suggests that the spin ordering is driven by charge ordering and that fluctuating stripes persist above the ordering transition.

Electronic Raman-scattering study of low-energy excitations in single and double CuO_2-layer Tl-Ba-(Ca)-Cu-O superconductors

Low energy Raman continuum and the redistribution of the continuum to a peak (2Δ-peak) in the superconducting state have been studied in Tl-Ba-(Ca)-Cu-O superconductors with single (Tl-2201) and double (Tl-2212) CuO_2 layer. The 2Δ/k_BT_c ratios in A_1g and B_1g symmetries are larger for Tl-2212 than for Tl-2201. The B_1g/A_1g gap ratio is also larger in Tl-2212. The A_1g intensities of the continuum and the 2Δ-peak are significantly weaker than the B_1g intensities in Tl-2201, but are comparable in Tl-2212. This shows that the Coulomb screening is much stronger in Tl-2201. The change from Tl-2201 to Tl-2212 of the normalized A_1g 2Δ-peak intensity is identical within experimental error to that of normalized A_1g continuum intensity. This suggests that the excitations forming the 2Δ-peak and the continuum couple to light by the same mechanism.

Evolution of Magnetic and Superconducting Fluctuations with Doping of High-Tc Superconductors (An electronic Raman scattering study)

For YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+δ} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 superconductors, electronic Raman scattering from high- and low-energy excitations has been studied in relation to the hole doping level, temperature, and energy of the incident photons. For underdoped superconductors, it is concluded that short range antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations persist with hole doping and doped single holes are incoherent in the AF environment. Above the superconducting (SC) transition temperature T_c the system exhibits a sharp Raman resonance of B_1g symmetry and about 75 meV energy and a pseudogap for electron-hole excitations below 75 meV, a manifestation of a partially coherent state forming from doped incoherent quasi-particles. The occupancy of the coherent state increases with cooling until phase ordering at T_c produces a global SC state.

Momentum-Dependent Charge Transfer Excitations in Sr2CuO2Cl2 - Angle Resolved Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy

Electron-hole pair excitations in the insulating cuprates $Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2$ were investigated by angle-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy. The optically allowed and optically forbidden transitions were observed to be strongly anisotropic in $Cu-O_2$ plane. The former show a large energy dispersion $\sim 1.5$eV along [110], and the latter appear at a higher energy position ($\sim 4.5$eV) only along [100], but not along [110]. We interpret these results as transitions involving excitons. A small exciton model is examined to explain both the observed features.

Resonant Two-Magnon Raman Scattering in Cuprate Antiferromagnetic Insulators

We present results of low-temperature two-magnon resonance Raman excitation profile measurements for single layer Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 and bilayer YBa_2Cu_3O_{6 + δ} antiferromagnets over the excitation region from 1.65 to 3.05 eV. These data reveal composite structure of the two-magnon line shape and strong nonmonotic dependence of the scattering intensity on excitation energy. We analyze these data using the triple resonance theory of Chubukov and Frenkel (Phys. Rev. Lett., 74, 3057 (1995)) and deduce information about magnetic interaction and band parameters in these materials.

Influence of oxygen ordering kinetics on Raman and optical response in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.4}

Kinetics of the optical and Raman response in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.4} were studied during room temperature annealing following heat treatment. The superconducting T_c, dc resistivity, and low-energy optical conductivity recover slowly, implying a long relaxation time for the carrier density. Short relaxation times are observed for the B_{1g} Raman scattering -- magnetic, continuum, and phonon -- and the charge transfer band. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that these two relaxation rates are related to two length scales corresponding to local oxygen ordering (fast) and long chain and twin formation (slow).

Antiferromagnetic Excitations and Van Hove Singularities in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$

We show that in quasi-two-dimensional $d$-wave superconductors Van Hove singularities close to the Fermi surface lead to novel magnetic quasi-particle excitations. We calculate the temperature and doping dependence of dynamical magnetic susceptibility for YBCO and show that the proposed excitations are in agreement with inelastic neutron scattering experiments. In addition, the values of the gap parameter and in-plane antiferromagnetic coupling are much smaller than usually believed.
