CMB anisotropy induced by tachyonic perturbations of dark energy

We study effects of possible tachyonic perturbations of dark energy on the CMB temperature anisotropy. Motivated by some models of phantom energy, we consider both Lorentz-invariant and Lorentz-violating dispersion relations for tachyonic perturbations. We show that in the Lorentz-violating case, the shape of the CMB anisotropy spectrum generated by the tachyonic perturbations is very different from that due to adiabatic scalar perturbations and, if sizeable, it would be straightforwardly distinguished from the latter. The tachyonic contribution improves slightly the agreement between the theory and data; however, this improvement is not statistically significant, so our analysis results in limits on the time scale of the tachyonic instability. In the Lorentz-invariant case, tachyonic contribution is a rapidly decaying function of the multipole number $l$, so that the entire observed dipole can be generated without conflicting the data at higher multipoles. On the conservative side, our comparison with the data places limit on the absolute value of the (imaginary) tachyon mass in the Lorentz-invariant case.

Higgs boson with a single generation in the bulk

We study Higgs boson properties in a model where three fermionic families of the Standard Model arise from a single generation in (5+1) dimensions. We demonstrate that, in spite of a non-trivial background, properties of the four-dimensional Higgs particle are almost indistinguishable from those in the Standard Model. We also argue that it is more natural to have a light Higgs boson in this model.

Lorentz-violating brane worlds and cosmological perturbations

We consider an inflating brane-world setup in which 4-dimensional Lorentz-invariance is violated at high 3-momentum scale $P_{LV} \gg H$, where $H$ is the inflationary Hubble parameter. We study massless scalar field in this background as a model for cosmological perturbations. Towards the end of inflation, the spectrum has both the standard, 4-dimensional part due to a brane-localized mode, and exotic, bulk induced contribution. The suppression of the latter is power-law only, $(H/P_{LV})^α$, provided that there exist bulk modes with energies $ω\ll H$. Contrary to general expectations, the exponent $α$ may be smaller than 2, and even smaller than 1, depending on details of the bulk geometry. Furthermore, the overall amplitude of the bulk-induced perturbations is enhanced as compared to the standard part, so the effects due to Lorentz-violation may dominate over the standard mechanism even for $P_{LV} \gg H$.

More about spontaneous Lorentz-violation and infrared modification of gravity

We consider a model with Lorentz-violating vector field condensates, in which dispersion laws of all perturbations, including tensor modes, undergo non-trivial modification in the infrared. The model is free of ghosts and tachyons at high 3-momenta. At low 3-momenta there are ghosts, and at even lower 3-momenta there exist tachyons. Still, with appropriate choice of parameters, the model is phenomenologically acceptable. Beyond a certain large distance scale and even larger time scale, the gravity of a static source changes from that of General Relativity to that of van Dam--Veltman--Zakharov limit of the Fierz--Pauli theory. Yet the late time cosmological evolution is always determined by the standard Friedmann equation, modulo small correction to the ``cosmological Planck mass'', so the modification of gravity cannot by itself explain the accelerated expansion of the Universe. We argue that the latter property is generic in a wide class of models with condensates.

Lorentz-violation and cosmological perturbations: a toy brane-world model

We study possible effects of Lorentz-violation on the generation of cosmological perturbations at inflation by introducing a simple inflating five-dimensional brane-world setup with violation of four-dimensional Lorentz-invariance at an energy scale $k$. We consider massless scalar field, meant to mimic perturbations of inflaton and/or gravitational field, in this background. At three-momenta below $k$, there exists a zero mode localized on the brane, whose behaviour coincides with that in four-dimensional theory. On the contrary, at three-momenta above $k$, the localized mode is absent and physics is entirely five-dimensional. As three-momenta get redshifted, more modes get localized on the brane, the phenomenon analogous to ``mode generation''. We find that for $k\gg H$, where $H$ is the inflationary Hubble scale, the spectrum of perturbations coincides with that in four-dimensional theory. For $k < H$ and time-dependent bulk parameters, the spectrum deviates, possibly strongly, from the flat spectrum even for pure de Sitter inflation.

Searching for family-number conserving neutral gauge bosons from extra dimensions

Previous studies have shown how the three generations of the Standard Model fermions can arise from a single generation in more than four dimensions, and how off-diagonal neutral couplings arise for gauge-boson Kaluza-Klein recurrences. These couplings conserve family number in the leading approximation. While an existing example, built on a spherical geometry, suggests a high compactification scale, we conjecture that the overall structure is generic, and work out possible signatures at colliders, compatible with rare decays data.

Flavour violation with a single generation

We calculate probabilities of flavour violating processes mediated by Kalutza-Klein modes of gauge bosons in a model where three generations of the Standard Model fermions arise from a single generation in (5+1) dimensions. We discuss a distinctive feature of the model: while the processes in which the generation number $G$ changes are strongly suppressed, the model is constrained by those with $ΔG=0$, for instance $K\to μ^\pm e^\mp$. The bound on the size of the extra dimensions is $1/R \gtrsim 64$ TeV.

On brane-induced gravity in warped backgrounds

We study whether modification of gravity at large distances is possible in warped backgrounds with two branes and a brane-induced term localized on one of the branes. We find that there are three large regions in the parameter space where the theory is weakly coupled up to high energies. In one of these regions gravity on the brane is four-dimensional at arbitrarily large distances, and the induced Einstein term results merely in the renormalization of the 4d Planck mass. In the other two regions the behavior of gravity changes at ultra-large distances; however, radion becomes a ghost. In parts of these regions, both branes have positive tensions, so the only reason for the appearance of the ghost field is the brane-induced term. In between these three regions, there are domains in the parameter space where gravity is strongly coupled at phenomenologically unacceptable low energy scale.

Fermions in the vortex background on a sphere

In 5+1 dimensions, we construct a vortex-like solution on a two-dimensional sphere. We study fermionic zero modes in the background of this solution and relate them to the replication of fermion families in the Standard Model. In particular, using a compactified space removes the need for the difficult localisation of gauge fields, while the present procedure (rather than naive compactification on a disk) also removes spurious fermionic modes.

Towards the realistic fermion masses with a single family in extra dimensions

In a class of multidimensional models, topology of a thick brane provides three chiral fermionic families with hierarchical masses and mixings in the effective four-dimensional theory, while the full model contains a single vector-like generation. We carry out numerical simulations and reproduce all known Standard Model fermion masses and mixings in one of these models.

Neutrino masses with a single generation in the bulk

In a class of multidimensional models, topology of the thick brane provides three chiral fermionic families with hierarchical masses and mixings in the effective four-dimensional theory, while the full model contains a single vector-like generation. We discuss how to incorporate three non-degenerate neutrino masses in these models with the help of only one singlet bulk fermion.

Three generations on a local vortex in extra dimensions

We develop an approach to the origin of three generations of the Standard Model fermions from one generation in a higher-dimensional theory, where four-dimensional fermions appear as zero modes trapped in the core of a topological defect, and the hierarchy of masses and mixings is produced by wave function overlaps in extra dimensions. We present a model with unbroken U(1) symmetry where three zero modes appear on an Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortex due to nontrivial scalar--fermion interactions.

Three fermionic generations on a topological defect in extra dimensions

We suggest a mechanism explaining the origin of three generations of the Standard Model fermions from one generation in a higher-dimensional theory. Four-dimensional fermions appear as zero modes trapped in the core of a topological defect with topological number three. We discuss hierarchical pattern of masses and mixings which arises in these models.

Neutrino masses from nonstandard supersymmetry breaking terms

Naturally small Majorana neutrino masses arise from nonstandard supersymmetry breaking terms. This mechanism works in the minimal supersymmetric framework and does not require extra particles or new mass scales. It could also be responsible for proton decay even in the absence of Grand Unification.

Non-renormalization of induced charges and constraints on strongly coupled theories

It is shown that global fermionic charges induced in vacuum by slowly varying, topologically non-trivial background scalar fields are not renormalized provided that expansion in momenta of background fields is valid. This suggests that strongly coupled theories obey induced charge matching conditions which are analogous, but generally not equivalent, to 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions. We give a few examples of induced charge matching. In particular, the corresponding constraints in softly broken supersymmetric QCD suggest non-trivial low energy mass pattern, in full accord with the results of direct analyses.

Cosmology with non-minimal scalar field: graceful entrance into inflation

We propose a scenario of the beginning of inflation in which the non-vacuum value of the scalar field that drives inflation develops dynamically due to the non-minimal coupling to gravity. In this scenario, inflation emerges as an intermediate stage of the evolution of the Universe, well after the Planck epoch, from a fairly general initial state.

Multiparticle Threshold Amplitudes Exponentiate in Arbitrary Scalar Theories

Threshold amplitudes are considered for $n$-particle production in arbitrary scalar theory. It is found that, like in $ϕ^4$, leading-$n$ corrections to the tree level amplitudes, being summed over all loops, exponentiate. This result provides more evidence in favor of the conjecture on the exponential behavior of the multiparticle amplitudes.
