Ground state fluctuations in finite Fermi and Bose systems

We consider a small and fixed number of fermions (bosons) in a trap. The ground state of the system is defined at T=0. For a given excitation energy, there are several ways of exciting the particles from this ground state. We formulate a method for calculating the number fluctuation in the ground state using microcanonical counting, and implement it for small systems of noninteracting fermions as well as bosons in harmonic confinement. This exact calculation for fluctuation, when compared with canonical ensemble averaging, gives considerably different results, specially for fermions. This difference is expected to persist at low excitation even when the fermion number in the trap is large.

Neutrinos from Stellar Collapse: Comparison of the effects of three and four flavour mixings

We study the effect of non-vanishing masses and mixings among neutrino flavours on the detection of neutrinos from stellar collapse by a water Cerenkov detector. We consider a frame-work in which there are four neutrino flavours, including a sterile neutrino, whose mass squared differences and mixings are constrained by the present understanding of solar, atmospheric and laboratory neutrino detection. We also include the effects of high density matter within the supernova core. Unlike in the three flavour scenario, we find that the number of events due to the dominant process involving electron-antineutrinos changes dramatically for some allowed mixing parameters. Furthermore, contributions from charged-current scattering off oxygen nuclei in the detector can be considerably enhanced due to flavour mixing. We also present a comparison between the two possible scenarios, namely, when only three active neutrino flavours are present and when they are accompanied by a fourth sterile neutrino.

Neutrinos from Stellar Collapse: Effects of flavour mixing

We study the effect of non-vanishing masses and mixings among neutrino flavours on the detection of neutrinos from stellar collapse by a water Cerenkov detector. We consider a realistic framework in which there are three neutrino flavours whose mass squared differences and mixings are constrained by the present understanding of solar and atmospheric neutrinos. We also include the effects of high dense matter within the supernova core. We find that the number of events due to the dominant process involving electron-antineutrinos may change dramatically for some allowed mixing parameters. Furthermore, contributions from charged-current scattering off oxygen atoms in the detector can be considerably enhanced due to flavour mixing; such events have a distinct experimental signature since they are backward-peaked. Hence, mixing has a non-trivial effect on the signature of neutrinos (and antineutrinos) from stellar collapse.

Exclusion statistics: A resolution of the problem of negative weights

We give a formulation of the single particle occupation probabilities for a system of identical particles obeying fractional exclusion statistics of Haldane. We first derive a set of constraints using an exactly solvable model which describes an ideal exclusion statistics system and deduce the general counting rules for occupancy of states obeyed by these particles. We show that the problem of negative probabilities may be avoided with these new counting rules.

A two-dimensional interacting system obeying Fractional Exclusion Statistics

We consider N fermions in a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator potential interacting with a very short-range repulsive pair-wise potential. The ground-state energy of this system is obtained by performing a Thomas-Fermi as well as a self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation. The two results are shown to agree even for a small number of particles. We next use the finite temperature Thomas-Fermi method to demonstrate that in the local density approximation, these interacting fermions are equivalent to a system of noninteracting particles obeying the Haldane-Wu fractional exclusion statistics. It is also shown that mapping onto to a system of N noninteracting quasi-particles enables us to predict the energies of the excited states of the N-body system.

The Weyl Series and the Trace formula: can we add them?

Periodic orbit expressions for the density of states lead to spurious results when directly used to calculate quantities of thermodynamic interest. This is because the trace formula is usually valid only for large energies while the calculations make use of it at all energies. We present a prescription for circumventing this problem by isolating contributions which arise from the inaccurate low-energy behavior, and are spurious, from other subdominant contributions which are physical and are not contained in the Weyl series. The method is tested by analyzing the fermionic grand partition function for a disk billiard and may readily be extended to other dynamical systems.

Novel classical ground state of a many body system in arbitrary dimensions

The classical ground state of a D- dimensional many body system with two and three body interactions is studied as a function of the strength of the three body interaction. We prove exactly that beyond a critical strength of the three body interaction, the classical ground state of the system is one in which all the particles are on a line. The positions of the particles in this string configuration are uniquely determined by the zeros of the Hermite polynomials.

Classical Many-particle Clusters in Two Dimensions

We report on a study of a classical, finite system of confined particles in two dimensions with a two-body repulsive interaction. We first develop a simple analytical method to obtain equilibrium configurations and energies for few particles. When the confinement is harmonic, we prove that the first transition from a single shell occurs when the number of particles changes from five to six. The shell structure in the case of an arbitrary number of particles is shown to be independent of the strength of the interaction but dependent only on its functional form. It is also independent of the magnetic field strength when included. We further study the effect of the functional form of the confinement potential on the shell structure. Finally we report some interesting results when a three-body interaction is included, albeit in a particular model.

Geometry of N-particle clusters in two-dimensions: Some exact results

We report on a study of a finite system of classical confined particles in two-dimensions in the presence of a uniform magnetic field and interacting via a two-body repulsive potential. We develop a simple analytical method of analysis to obtain ground state energies and configurations. We prove analytically the minimum energy configurations are independent of the nature of two body interaction and the magnetic field. In particular we prove that the first transition from a single shell occurs when the number of particles changes from five to six. These results are exact.

Novel correlations in two dimensions: Two-body problem

We discuss a many-body Hamiltonian with two- and three-body interactions in two dimensions introduced recently by Murthy, Bhaduri and Sen. Apart from an analysis of some exact solutions in the many-body system, we analyze in detail the two-body problem which is completely solvable. We show that the solution of the two-body problem reduces to solving a known differential equation due to Heun. We show that the two-body spectrum becomes remarkably simple for large interaction strength and the level structure resembles that of the Landau Levels. We also clarify the "ultraviolet" regularization which is needed to define an inverse-square potential properly and discuss its implications for our model.

A Fermion-like description of condensed Bosons in a trap

A Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms, trapped in an axially symmetric harmonic potential, is considered. By averaging the spatial density along the symmetry direction over a length that preserves the aspect ratio, the system may be mapped on to a zero temperature noninteracting Fermi-like gas. The ``mock fermions'' have a state occupancy factor $(>>1)$ proportional to the ratio of the coherance length to the ``hard-core'' radius of the atom. The mapping reproduces the ground state properties of the condensate, and is used to estimate the vortex excitation energy analytically. The ``mock-fermion'' description predicts some novel collective excitation in the condensed phase.

Novel correlations in two dimensions: Some exact solutions

We construct a new many-body Hamiltonian with two- and three-body interactions in two space dimensions and obtain its exact many-body ground state for an arbitrary number of particles. This ground state has a novel pairwise correlation. A class of exact solutions for the excited states is also found. These excited states display an energy spectrum similar to the Calogero-Sutherland model in one dimension. The model reduces to an analog of the well-known trigonometric Sutherland model when projected on to a circular ring.

Fractional Exclusion Statistics and Two Dimensional Electron Systems

Using the Thomas-Fermi approximation, we show that an interacting two dimensional electron gas may be described in terms of fractional exclusion statistics at zero and finite temperatures when the interaction has a short-range component. We argue that a likely physical situation for this phenomenon to occur may exist in two dimensional quantum dots.

Haldane Exclusion Statistics and the Boltzmann Equation

We generalize the collision term in the one-dimensional Boltzmann-Nordheim transport equation for quasiparticles that obey the Haldane exclusion statistics. For the equilibrium situation, this leads to the ``golden rule'' factor for quantum transitions. As an application of this, we calculate the density response function of a one-dimensional electron gas in a periodic potential, assuming that the particle-hole excitations are quasiparticles obeying the new statistics. We also calculate the relaxation time of a nuclear spin in a metal using the modified golden rule.

Solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations with three flavours

We analyze the solar and the atmospheric neutrino problems in the context of three flavour neutrino oscillations. We assume a mass hierarchy in the vacuum mass eigenvalues $μ_3^2 \gg μ_2^2 \geq μ_1^2$, but make no approximation regarding the magnitudes of the mixing angles. We find that there are small but continuous bands in the parameter space where the constraints imposed by the current measurements of $ \ {}^{71} Ga$, ${}^{37} Cl$ and Kamiokande experiments are satisfied at $1 σ$ level. The allowed parameter space increases dramatically if the error bars are enlarged to $1.6 σ$. The electron neutrino survival probability has different energy dependence in different regions of the parameter space. Measurement of the recoil electron energy spectrum in detectors that use $ν- e$ scattering may distinguish between some of the allowed regions of parameter space. Finally we use the results for the parameter space admitted by the solar neutrinos as an input for the atmospheric neutrino problem and show that there exists a substantial region of parameter space in which both problems can be solved.

Haldane exclusion statistics and the charge fractionalisation in chiral bags

It is proposed that the phenomenon of charge fractionalisation of the spatially confined particle in a topological chiral bag may be interpreted as a manifestation of the exclusion statistics proposed by Haldane. The fractional exclusion statistics parameter is just the fractional baryon charge $Q$ of the particle in this case. We also state the necessary conditions for Haldane fractional to occur for systems in higher dimensions.

Thermodynamics of an one-dimensional ideal gas with fractional exclusion statistics

We show that the particles in the Calogero-Sutherland Model obey fractional exclusion statistics as defined by Haldane. We construct anyon number densities and derive the energy distribution function. We show that the partition function factorizes in the form characteristic of an ideal gas. The virial expansion is exactly computable and interestingly it is only the second virial coefficient that encodes the statistics information.

Haldane exclusion statistics and second virial coefficient

We show that Haldanes new definition of statistics, when generalised to infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces, is equal to the high temperature limit of the second virial coefficient. We thus show that this exclusion statistics parameter, g , of anyons is non-trivial and is completely determined by its exchange statistics parameter $α$. We also compute g for quasiparticles in the Luttinger model and show that it is equal to $α$.
