Ferrofluid nucleus phase transitions in an external uniform magnetic field

The phase transition between a massive dense phase and a diluted superparamagnetic phase has been studied by means of a direct molecular dynamics simulation. The equilibrium structures of the ferrofluid aggregate nucleus are obtained for different values of a temperature and an external magnetic field magnitude. An approximate match of experiment and simulation has been shown for the ferrofluid phase diagram coordinates "field-temperature". The provided phase coexistence curve has an opposite trend comparing to some of known theoretical results. This contradiction has been discussed. For given experimental parameters, it has been concluded that the present results describe more precisely the transition from linear chains to a dense globes phase. The theoretical concepts which provide the opposite binodal curve dependency trend match other experimental conditions: a diluted ferrofluid, a high particle coating rate, a high temperature, and/or a less particles coupling constant value.

Electric Current and Noise in Long GaN Nanowires in the Space-Charge Limited Transport Regime

We studied electric current and noise in planar GaN nanowires (NWs). The results obtained at low voltages provide us with estimates of the depletion effects in the NWs. For larger voltages, we observed the space-charge limited current (SCLC) effect. The onset of the effect clearly correlates with the NW width. For narrow NWs the mature SCLC regime was achieved. This effect has great impact on fluctuation characteristics of studied NWs. At low voltages, we found that the normalized noise level increases with decreasing NW width. In the SCLC regime, a further increase in the normalized noise intensity (up to 1E4 times) was observed, as well as a change in the shape of the spectra with a tendency towards slope -3/2. We suggest that the features of the electric current and noise found in the NWs are of a general character and will have an impact on the development of NW-based devices.

Magneto-optical extinction trend inversion in ferrofluids

Effects of pulse magnetic field on the optical transmission properties of thin ferrofluid (FF) layers were experimentally investigated. It was observed that, under an influence of an external uniform magnetic field, pulses applied to the samples surfaces in normal direction decrease the optical transmission with further returning it to its original state, even before the end of the field pulse. The dependencies of the observed effects on the magnetic pulse magnitude and the samples thickness were investigated. The experimental results are explained using FF columnar aggregates growth and lateral coalescence under influence of a magnetic field, leading to a light scattering type Rayleigh-to-Mie transition. Further evolution of this process comes to a geometrical optics scale and respective macroscopic observable opaque FF columnar aggregates emergence. These changes of optical transmission are non-monotonic during the magnetic field pulse duration with minimal value in the case of Mie scattering, which is known as a magneto-optical extinction trend inversion. The residual inversion was detected after the external magnetic field pulse falling edge. Using molecular dynamics simulation, we showed that a homogeneous external magnetic field is enough for the formation of columnar aggregates and their fusion. The results clarify the known Li theory (Li et al., J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 37 (2004) 3357, and Sci. Technol. Adv. Mate. 8 (2007) 448), implying an inhomogeneous field as a required prerequisite for the magneto-optical extinction trend inversion phenomenon.

Ferrofluid aggregates phase transitions in the planar magnetic field

The influence of the cyclic heating and cooling on properties of the aggregates (aka "ferrofluid clusters") in a ferrofluid, which made on the basis of magnetite nanoparticles, are investigated. The heating of the ferrofluid layer with such aggregates leads to equalization of the concentration between high- and low-concentrated phases. The temperature of the equalization of the phase concentrations was determined at different values of an external constant magnetic field, which was applied parallel to the layer of the ferrofluid. The temperature of the destruction of a periodic structure of the magnetic aggregates, which were formed during cooling of a homogeneous phase of the ferrofluid, was obtained at the different values of the applied external magnetic field.

Low-frequency Noise in Individual Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors with Top, Side and Back Gate Configurations: Effect of Gamma Irradiation

We report on the influence of low gamma irradiation (10^4 Gy) on the noise properties of individual carbon nanotube (CNT) field-effect transistors (FETs) with different gate configurations and two different dielectric layers, SiO2 and Al2O3. Before treatment, strong generation-recombination (GR) noise components are observed. These data are used to identify several charge traps related to dielectric layers of the FETs by determining their activation energy. Investigation of samples with a single SiO2 dielectric layer as well as with two dielectric layers allows us to separate traps for each of the two dielectric layers. We reveal that each charge trap level observed in the side gate operation splits into two levels in top gate operation due to a different potential profile along the CNT channel. After gamma irradiation, only reduced flicker noise is registered in the noise spectra, which indicates a decrease of the number of charge traps. The mobility, which is estimated to be larger than 2x10^4 cm2V-1s-1 at room temperature, decreases only slightly after radiation treatment demonstrating high radiation hardness of the CNTs. Finally, we study the influence of Schottky barriers at the metal-nanotube interface on the transport properties of FETs analyzing the behavior of the flicker noise component.

Molecular Dynamics Study of the Primary Ferrofluid Aggregate Formation

Investigations of the phase transitions and self-organization in the magnetic aggregates are of the fundamental and applied interest. The long-range ordering structures described in the Tománek's systematization (M. Yoon, and D. Tománek, 2010 [1]) are not yet obtained in the direct molecular dynamics simulations. The resulted structures usually are the linear chains or circles, or, else, amorphous (liquid) formations. In the present work, it was shown, that the thermodynamically equilibrium primary ferrofluid aggregate has either the long-range ordered or liquid phase. Due to the unknown steric layer force and other model idealizations, the clear experimental verification of the real equilibrium phase is still required. The predicted long-range ordered (crystallized) phase produces the faceting shape of the primary ferrofluid aggregate, which can be recognized experimentally. The medical (antiviral) application of the crystallized aggregates has been suggested. Dynamic formation of all observed ferrofluid nanostructures conforms to the Tománek's systematization.

Noise and Transport Characterization of Single Molecular Break Junctions with Individual Molecule

We studied the noise spectra of molecule-free and molecule-containing mechanically controllable break junctions. Both types of junctions revealed typical 1/ f noise characteristics at different distances between the contacts with square dependence of current noise power spectral density on current. Additional Lorentzian-shape (1/ f 2) noise components were recorded only when nanoelectrodes were bridged by individual 1,4 benzenediamine molecule. The characteristic frequency of the revealed 1/ f 2 noise related to a single bridging molecule correlates with the lock-in current amplitudes. The recorded behavior of Lorentzian-shape noise component as a function of current is interpreted as the manifestation of a dynamic reconfiguration of molecular coupling to the metal electrodes. We propose a phenomenological model that correlates the charge transport via a single molecule with the reconfiguration of its coupling to the metal electrodes. Experimentally obtained results are in good agreement with theoretical ones and indicate that coupling between the molecule metal electrodes is important aspect that should be taken into account.
