An abundance study of the red giants in the seismology fields of the CoRoT satellite

A precise characterisation of the red giants in the seismology fields of the CoRoT satellite is a prerequisite for further in-depth seismic modelling. The optical spectra obtained for 19 targets have been used to accurately estimate their fundamental parameters and chemical composition. The extent of internal mixing is also investigated through the abundances of Li, CNO and Na (as well as 12C/13C in a few cases).

First Results for the Solar Neighborhood of the Asiago Red Clump Survey

The Asiago Red Clump Spectroscopic Survey (ARCS) is an ongoing survey that provides atmospheric parameters, distances and space velocities of a well selected sample of Red Clump stars distributed along the celestial equator. We used the ARCS catalog for a preliminary investigation of the Galactic disk in the Solar Neighborhood, in particular we focused on detection and characterization of moving groups.

A spectroscopic survey of faint, high-Galactic-latitude red clump stars. I. The high resolution sample

Context: Their high intrinsic brightness and small dispersion in absolute magnitude make red clump (RC) stars a prime tracer of Galactic structure and kinematics. Aims: We aim to derive accurate, multi-epoch radial velocities and atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, [M/H], Vrot sin i) of a large sample of carefully selected RC stars, fainter than those present in other spectroscopic surveys and located over a great circle at high Galactic latitudes. Methods: We acquired data of the program stars of high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) and high resolution with the Asiago Echelle spectrograph. Radial velocities were obtained by applying cross-correlation and atmospheric parameters via chi2 fit to a synthetic spectral library. Extensive tests were carried out by re-observing with the same instrument a large number of standard stars taken from a variety of sources in the literature. During these tests, we found that the absolute Tycho VT magnitude of local red clump stars is not dependent on metallicity. Results: A total of 277 red clump stars (101 of them with a second epoch observation) of the extended solar neighborhood and 55 calibration stars were observed and included in an output catalog that contains (in addition to relevant support astrometric and photometric data taken from literature) the main output of our survey: accurate multi-epoch radial velocities (sigma(RV)=< 0.4 km/s), accurate atmospheric parameters (sigma(Teff)=68 K, sigma(log g)=0.11 dex, sigma([M/H])=0.10 dex, sigma(Vrot sin i)=1.1 km/sec), distances, and space velocities (U,V,W).

IPHAS and the symbiotic stars. II. New discoveries and a sample of the most common mimics

In a previous paper [arXiv:0712.2391], we presented the selection criteria needed to search for symbiotic stars in IPHAS, the INT Halpha survey of the Northern Galactic plane. IPHAS gives us the opportunity to make a systematic, complete search for symbiotic stars in a magnitude-limited volume. Follow-up spectroscopy at different telescopes worldwide of a sample of sixty two symbiotic star candidates is presented. Seven out of nineteen S-type candidates observed spectroscopically are confirmed to be genuine symbiotic stars. The spectral type of their red giant components, as well as reddening and distance, were computed by modelling the spectra. Only one new D-type symbiotic system, out of forty-three candidates observed, was found. This was as expected (see discussion in our paper on the selection criteria). The object shows evidence for a high density outflow expanding at a speed larger than 65 km/s. Most of the other candidates are lightly reddened classical T Tauri stars and more highly reddened young stellar objects that may be either more massive young stars of HAeBe type or classical Be stars. In addition, a few notable objects have been found, such as three new Wolf-Rayet stars and two relatively high-luminosity evolved massive stars. We also found a helium-rich source, possibly a dense ejecta hiding a WR star, which is surrounded by a large ionized nebula.

Pressure and alloying effects on the metal to insulator transition in NiS{2-x}Se{x} studied by infrared spectroscopy

The metal to insulator transition in the charge transfer NiS{2-x}Se{x} compound has been investigated through infrared reflectivity. Measurements performed by applying pressure to pure NiS2 (lattice contraction) and by Se-alloying (lattice expansion) reveal that in both cases an anomalous metallic state is obtained. We find that optical results are not compatible with the linear Se-alloying vs Pressure scaling relation previously established through transport, thus pointing out the substantially different microscopic origin of the two transitions.

Pressure dependence of the single particle excitation in the charge-density-wave CeTe$_3$ system

We present new data on the pressure dependence at 300 K of the optical reflectivity of CeTe$_3$, which undergoes a charge-density-wave (CDW) phase transition well above room temperature. The collected data cover an unprecedented broad spectral range from the infrared up to the ultraviolet, which allows a robust determination of the gap as well as of the fraction of the Fermi surface affected by the formation of the CDW condensate. Upon compressing the lattice there is a progressive closing of the gap inducing a transfer of spectral weight from the gap feature into the Drude component. At frequencies above the CDW gap we also identify a power-law behavior, consistent with findings along the $R$Te$_3$ series (i.e., chemical pressure) and suggestive of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid scenario at high energy scales. This newest set of data is placed in the context of our previous investigations of this class of materials and allows us to revisit important concepts for the physics of CDW state in layered-like two-dimensional systems.

The nature and evolution of Nova Cygni 2006

AIMS: Nova Cyg 2006 has been intensively observed throughout its full outburst. We investigate the energetics and evolution of the central source and of the expanding ejecta, their chemical abundances and ionization structure, and the formation of dust. METHOD: We recorded low, medium, and/or high-resolution spectra (calibrated into accurate absolute fluxes) on 39 nights, along with 2353 photometric UBVRcIc measures on 313 nights, and complemented them with IR data from the literature. RESULTS: The nova displayed initially the normal photometric and spectroscopic evolution of a fast nova of the FeII-type. Pre-maximum, principal, diffuse-enhanced, and Orion absorption systems developed in a normal way. After the initial outburst, the nova progressively slowed its fading pace until the decline reversed and a second maximum was reached (eight months later), accompanied by large spectroscopic changes. Following the rapid decline from second maximum, the nova finally entered the nebular phase and formed optically thin dust. We computed the amount of formed dust and performed a photo-ionization analysis of the emission-line spectrum during the nebular phase, which showed a strong enrichment of the ejecta in nitrogen and oxygen, and none in neon, in agreement with theoretical predictions for the estimated 1.0 Msun white dwarf in Nova Cyg 2006. The similarities with the poorly investigated V1493 Nova Aql 1999a are discussed.

Optical evolution of Nova Ophiuchi 2007 = V2615 Oph

The moderately fast Nova Oph 2007 reached maximum brightness on March 28, 2007 at V=8.52, B-V=+1.12, V-Rc=+0.76, V-Ic=+1.59 and Rc-Ic=+0.83, after fast initial rise and a pre-maximum halt lasting a week. Decline times were t(V,2)=26.5, t(B,2)=30, t(V,3)=48.5 and t(B,3)=56.5 days. The distance to the nova is d=3.7 kpc, the height above the galactic plane z=215 pc, the reddening E(B-V)=0.90 and the absolute magnitude at maximum M(V,max)=-7.2 and M(B,max)=-7.0. The spectrum four days before maximum resembled a F6 super-giant, in agreement with broad-band colors. It later developed into that of a standard 'FeII'-class nova. Nine days past maximum, the expansion velocity estimated from the width of H$α$ emission component was 730 km/s, and the displacement from it of the principal and diffuse enhanced absorption systems were 650 and 1380 km/s, respectively. Dust probably formed and disappeared during the period from 82 to 100 days past maximum, causing (at peak dust concentration) an extinction of Delta B=1.8 mag and an extra Delta E(B-V)=0.44 reddening.

Measurement of the temporal response of ferroelectric cathodes

Ferroelectric ceramics are tested as photocathodes at INFN Frascati Laboratories. In order to characterize them for use in linac injectors it is important to measure the temporal shape of the emitted current. With a duration of the laser pulse of 25 ps, the required resolution is a few ps. An apparatus has been set up for the purpose, consisting of a 30 kV electron gun, a microwave deflecting cavity which translates the temporal distribution of the electron bunch into a spatial one, a fluorescent screen on which the deflected beam traces a sector of a circle and various focusing and charge measuring items. The image on the screen is detected via a CCD camera and a frame grabber. We describe the performance of the apparatus and some preliminary temporal distribution measurements.
