Nanophotonic structures with optical surface modes for tunable spin current generation

Heat generated by spin currents in spintronics-based devices is typically much less than that generated by charge current flows in conventional electronic devices. However, the conventional approaches for excitation of spin currents based on spin-pumping and spin Hall effect are limited in efficiency which restricts their application for viable spintronic devices. We propose a novel type of photonic-crystal (PC) based structures for efficient and tunable optically-induced spin current generation via the Spin Seebeck and inverse spin Hall effects. It is experimentally demonstrated that optical surface modes localized at the PC surface covered by ferromagnetic layer and materials with giant spin-orbit coupling (SOC) notably increase the efficiency of the optically-induced spin current generation and provides its tunability by modifying light wavelength or angle of incidence. Up to 100% of the incident light power can be transferred to heat within the SOC layer and, therefore, to spin current. Importantly, high efficiency becomes accessible even for ultra-thin SOC layers. Moreover, surface patterning of the PC-based spintronic nanostructure allows local generation of spin currents at the pattern scales rather than diameter of the laser beam.

Analysis, optimization, and characterization of magnetic photonic crystal structures and thin-film material layers

MPC (Magneto-Photonic Crystal) Optimisation is a feature-rich Windows software application designed to enable researchers to analyze the optical and magneto-optical spectral properties of multilayers containing gyrotropic constituents. A set of computational algorithms aimed at enabling the design optimization and optical or magneto-optical (MO) spectral analysis of 1D magnetic photonic crystals (MPC) is reported, together with its Windows software implementation. Relevant material property datasets (e.g., the optical spectra of refractive index, absorption, and gyration) of several important optical and MO materials are included, enabling easy reproduction of the previously published results from the field of MPC-based Faraday rotator development, and an effective demonstration-quality introduction of future users to the multiple features of this package. We also report on the methods and algorithms used to obtain the absorption coefficient spectral dispersion datasets for new materials, for which the film thickness, transmission spectrum, and refractive index dispersion function are known.

Macroscopic Rabi-Like Oscillations of Ultracold Atoms in an Asymmetrical Two-Dimensional Magnetic Lattice

We investigate the existence of the $macroscopic$ $quantum$ $phase$ in trapped ultracold quantum degenerate gases, such as Bose-Einstein condensate, in an asymmetrical two-dimensional magnetic lattice. We show the key to adiabatically control the tunneling in the new two-dimensional magnetic lattice by means of external magnetic bias fields. The macroscopic quantum phase signature is identified as a Rabi-like oscillation when solving the system of coupled time-dependent differential equations, described here by the Boson Josephson Junctions (BJJs). In solving the system of the BJJs we used an order parameter that includes both time-dependent variational parameters which are the fractional population at each lattice site and the phase difference. The BJJs solution presents a clear evidence for the macroscopic quantum coherence.

Towards Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons in an asymmetric multi-quantum state magnetic lattice

An asymmetric multi-quantum state magnetic lattice is proposed to host excitons formed in a quantum degenerate gas of ultracold fermionic atoms to simulate Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of excitons. A Quasi-two dimensional degenerate gas of excitons can be collected in the in-plane asymmetric magnetic bands created at the surface of the proposed magnetic lattice, where the ultracold fermions simulate separately direct and indirect confined electronhole pairs (spin up fermions-spin down fermions) rising to the statistically degenerate Bose gas and eventually through controlled tunnelling to BEC of excitons. The confinement of the coupled magnetic quantum well (CMQWs) system may significantly improve the condition for long lived exciton BEC. The exciton BEC, formed in CMQWs can be regarded as a suitable host for the multi-qubits (multipartite) systems to be used in quantum information processors.

Multipartite Entanglement in a Discrete Magnetic Bands Magnetic Lattice

Using magneto-optical materials, an asymmetric multi-quantum state magnetic lattice is proposed to host an entangled multipartite system formed by using a quantum degenerate gas of ultracold atoms in a Bose Einstein Condensate (BEC). The discrete magnetic bands magnetic lattice is devised to locate a controllable long-range entanglement of a many harmonic oscillator system well separated in space. The confinement of the coupled magnetic quantum well (CMQW) system may significantly improve the condition for the long-range entanglement of the multipartite (multi-qubits) to be used in quantum information processors.

Tunable Integrated-Optics Nanoscaled Devices Based on Magnetic Photonic Crystals

Magnetooptical properties of magnetic photonic crystals have been investigated in the view of their possible applications for the modern integrated-optics devices. A "transfer matrices" formalism was expanded for the case of oblique light incidence on the periodic nanoscaled magnetic multilayered systems. Several new effects such as the Faraday effect dependence on the incidence angle and the tunability of the bandgap defect modes spectral location by external magnetic fields were found. Several possibilities of one-dimensional magnetic photonic crystals applications for the optical devices are discussed. Initial steps towards the practical implementation of the proposed devices are reported.

Study of the K- -> mu- nu pi0 decay

The decay $K^{-} \to μ^{-} \barν π^{0}$ has been studied using in-flight decays detected with ``ISTRA+'' setup operating in the 25 GeV negative secondary beam of the U-70 PS. About 112K events were used for the analysis. The $λ_{+}$ and $λ_{0}$ slope parameters of the decay formfactors $f_{+}(t)$, $f_{0}(t)$ have been measured : $λ_{+}= 0.0321 \pm 0.004$(stat) $\pm 0.002$(syst) $λ_{0}= 0.0209 \pm 0.004$(stat) $\pm 0.002$(syst); the correlation $d λ_{0}/d λ_{+}=-0.46$ The limits on the possible tensor and scalar couplings have been derived: $f_{T}/f_{+}(0)=-0.021 \pm 0.028$(stat) $\pm 0.014$(theory); $f_{S}/f_{+}(0)=0.004 \pm 0.005$(stat) $\pm 0.005$(theory)

Noncommutative o*(N) and usp*(2N) algebras and the corresponding gauge field theories

The extension of the noncommutative u*(N) Lie algebra to noncommutative orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras is studied. Using an anti-automorphism of the star-matrix algebra, we show that the u*(N) can consistently be restricted to o*(N) and usp*(N) algebras that have new mathematical structures. We give explicit fundamental matrix representations of these algebras, through which the formulation for the corresponding noncommutative gauge field theories are obtained. In addition, we present a D-brane configuration with an orientifold which realizes geometrically our algebraic construction, thus embedding the new noncommutative gauge theories in superstring theory in the presence of a constant background magnetic field. Some algebraic generalizations that may have applications in other areas of physics are also discussed.

The Calogero Model and the Virasoro Symmetry

We construct new realizations of the Virasoro algebra inspired by the Calogero model. The Virasoro algebra we find acts as a kind of spectrum-generating algebra of the Calogero model. We furthermore present the superextension of these results and introduce a class of higher-spin extensions of the Virasoro algebra which are of the $W_\infty$ - type.
