Optical Dipole Trap for Hg Atoms

We report the first realization of an optical dipole trap (ODT) for ultracold mercury atoms, overcoming the challenge posed by the exceptionally low polarizability of Hg and the resulting weak optical trapping potential. We demonstrate the transfer of six naturally abundant Hg isotopes from a magneto-optical trap (MOT) into the ODT and characterize its loading dynamics, trap depth, and lifetime. Confinement of dense samples of ultracold Hg opens new opportunities for studies of isotope-dependent collisions and photoassociation and provides a route toward quantum degeneracy.

Stress-induced Martensitic transformation in epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga thin films and its correlation to optical and magneto-optical properties

The optical and magneto-optical properties of thin epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga films, with thicknesses ranging from 8 to 160 nm, were investigated across the spectral range of 0.7-6.4 eV. The films were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering on MgO substrate with stress-mediating Cr buffer layer. Structural and magnetic characterization revealed an stress-induced martensitic transformation for the films thicker than 80 nm, while thinner films remained in austenite structure deformed by substrate constraint. Both X-type and Y-type twin domains were observed in martensitic samples. Magneto-optical polar Kerr effect spectra showed notable evolution with film thicknesses, demonstrating changes in electronic structure of Ni-Mn-Ga. A combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy allowed for the deduction of the spectral dependence of full permittivity tensor of investigated samples. Three magneto-optical transitions were fitted to the spectra of non-diagonal permittivity using semiclassical theory, showing strong correlations with in-plane coercivity. Observed correlations highlight the impact of substrate-induced strain on Ni-Mn-Ga films and provide insights into the electronic structure changes associated with the martensitic transformation.

Magnetic phases and zone-folded phonons in a frustrated van der Waals magnet

2D magnetic materials have attracted extensive research interest due to their potential application in nanospintronics, optospintronics, and in magnonics. Ferromagnetic as well as antiferromagnetic layered materials have been demonstrated and successfully inserted into van der Waals heterostructures. However, the effects of magnetic frustration in van der Waals materials and the possibilities offered by spin configurations characterized by nonlinear spin arrangements have not been fully considered yet. Herein, we establish the magnetic phase diagram of bulk CrOCl, a frustrated van der Waals magnet, using magnetization and magneto-optical spectroscopy techniques. In particular, we use the magnetic superstructures relative to the crystallographic unit cell and the associated rich zone-folded phonon series to describe the magnetic field induced phases. Theoretical calculations taking into account the competing nearest neighbors magnetic exchange interactions provide a unique insight into the lattice vibrations of this class of magnetic system. This study expands the scope of 2D magnetic materials and provides a methodology to characterize frustrated van der Waals magnets.

Antiferromagnetic resonance in $\alpha$-MnTe

Antiferromagnetic resonance in a bulk $\alpha$-MnTe crystal is investigated using both frequency-domain and time-domain THz spectroscopy techniques. At low temperatures, an excitation at the photon energy of $(3.5\pm 0.1)$~meV is observed and identified as a magnon mode through its distinctive dependence on temperature and magnetic field. This behavior is reproduced using a simplified model for antiferromagnetic resonance in an easy-plane antiferromagnet. The results of our experiments, when compared to exchange constants established in the literature, allow us to extract the out-of-plane component of the single-ion magnetic anisotropy reaching $(40\pm10)$~$\mu$eV.

Optical, magneto-optical properties and fiber-drawing ability of tellurite glasses in the TeO2-ZnO-BaO ternary system

The presented work is focused on the optical and magneto-optical characterization of TeO2-ZnO-BaO (TZB) tellurite glasses. We investigated the refractive index and extinction coefficient dispersion by spectroscopic ellipsometry from ultraviolet, 0.193 um, up to mid infrared, 25 um spectral region. Studied glasses exhibited large values of linear (n632 = 1.91-2.09) and non-linear refractive index (n2 = 1.20-2.67x10-11 esu), Verdet constant (V632 = 22-33 radT-1m-1) and optical band gap energy (Eg = 3.7-4.1 eV). The materials characterization revealed that BaO substitution by ZnO leads (at constant content of TeO2) to an increase in linear and nonlinear refractive index as well as Verdet constant while the optical band gap energy decreases. Fiber drawing ability of TeO2-ZnO-BaO glassy system has been demonstrated on 60TeO2-20ZnO-20BaO glass with presented mid infrared attenuation coefficient. Specific parameters such as dispersion and single oscillator energy, Abbe number, and first-/ third-order optical susceptibility are enclosed together with the values of magneto-optic anomaly derived from the calculation of measured dispersion of the refractive index.

Room temperature weak collinear ferrimagnet with symmetry driven, large intrinsic magneto-optic signatures

Here we present a magnetic thin film with a weak ferrimagnetic (FIM) phase above the N\'eel temperature ($T_{N}$ = 240 K) and a non-collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase below, exhibiting a small net magnetisation due to strain-associated canting of the magnetic moments. A long-range ordered FIM phase has been predicted in related materials, but without symmetry analysis. We now perform this analysis and use it to calculate the MOKE spectra in AFM and FIM phases. From the good agreement between the form of the measured and predicted MOKE spectra, we propose the AFM and FIM phases share the magnetic space group C2'/m' and that the symmetry driven magneto-optic and magneto-transport properties are maximised at room temperature in the FIM phase due to the non-zero intrinsic Berry phase contribution present in these materials. A room temperature FIM phase with large optical and transport signatures, as well as sensitivity to lattice strain and magnetic field, has useful prospects for high-speed spintronic applications.

Magnon-polarons in van der Waals antiferromagnet FePS3

The hybridization of magnons (spin waves) with phonons, if sufficiently strong and comprising long wavelength excitations, may offer a new playground when manipulating the magnetically ordered systems with light. Applying a magnetic field to a quasi-2D antiferromagnet, FePS3, we tune the magnon-gap excitation towards coincidence with the initially lower-in-energy phonon modes. Hybrid magnon-phonon modes, the magnon polarons are unveiled with demonstration of a pronounced avoided crossing between the otherwise bare magnon and phonon excitations. The magnon polarons in FePS3 are primary traced with Raman scattering experiments, but, as we show, they also couple directly to terahertz photons, what evokes their further explorations in the domain of antiferromagnetic optospintronics.

Single crystal studies and electronic structure investigation of a room-temperature semiconductor NaMnAs

We report synthesis of single crystalline NaMnAs, confirm its antiferromagnetic order and characterise the sample by photoemission spectroscopy. The electronic structure was studied using optical transmittance, x-ray and ultraviolet spectroscopy and by theoretical modeling using local density approximation (LDA) extended to LDA+U when Heisenberg model parameters were determined. Optical transmittance measurement have confirmed the theoretical predictions that NaMnAs is a semiconductor. Also the N\'eel temperature was closer determined for the first time from temperature dependence of magnetization, in agreement with our Monte Carlo simulations.

The surface degradation and its impact on the magnetic properties of bulk VI_3

Despite belonging to a well-studied family of transition metal trihalides, VI_3 has received significant attention only recently. As a hard ferromagnetic van der Waals compound with a large coercivity, it attracted much attention because of its potential use in atomically thin spintronic and optoelectronic devices. However, practical exploration of VI_3 is challenging due to its instability under ambient conditions. Here, we present a comprehensive set of optical, x-ray diffraction, magnetization, and ellipsometric measurements of VI3 and demonstrate that, similarly to the related van der Waals ferromagnet CrI_3, the degradation process is accelerated by the presence of moisture. The VI_3 surface was covered by selected media commonly used in physical measurements to test its stability and lower the degradation rate three times or higher, providing practical information for experimentalists interested. The decomposition study at ambient conditions shows that the VI_3 single crystal can be used for most of the bulk, magnetization, and optical measurements without any noticeable change of physical properties, as the significant degradation appears first after ~ 2 hours of exposition as illustrated, e.g., by the evolution of the ferromagnetic T_1 and T_2 transitions. The ellipsometric measurement demonstrates that even the surface remains optically stable for at least 5 minutes.

Band structure of CuMnAs probed by optical and photoemission spectroscopy

Tetragonal phase of CuMnAs progressively appears as one of the key materials for antiferromagnetic spintronics due to efficient current-induced spin-orbit torques whose existence can be directly inferred from crystal symmetry. Theoretical understanding of spintronic phenomena in this material, however, relies on the detailed knowledge of electronic structure (band structure and corresponding wave functions) which has so far been tested only to a limited extent. We show that AC permittivity (obtained from ellipsometry) and UV photoelectron spectra agree with density functional calculations. Together with the x-ray diffraction and precession electron diffraction tomography, our analysis confirms recent theoretical claim [Phys.Rev.B 96, 094406 (2017)] that copper atoms occupy lattice positions in the basal plane of the tetragonal unit cell.

Strong interband Faraday rotation in 3D topological insulator Bi2Se3

The Faraday effect is a representative magneto-optical phenomenon, resulting from the transfer of angular momentum between interacting light and matter in which time-reversal symmetry has been broken by an externally applied magnetic field. Here we report on the Faraday rotation induced in the prominent 3D topological insulator Bi2Se3 due to bulk interband excitations. The origin of this non-resonant effect, extraordinarily strong among other non-magnetic materials, is traced back to the specific Dirac-type Hamiltonian for Bi2Se3, which implies that electrons and holes in this material closely resemble relativistic particles with a non-zero rest mass.

Optical investigation of magneto-structural phase transition in FeRh

Magneto-structural phase transition in FeRh epitaxial layers was studied optically. It is shown that the transition between the low-temperature antiferromagnetic phase and the high-temperature ferromagnetic phase is accompanied by a rather large change of the optical response in the visible and near infrared spectral ranges. This phenomenon was used to measure the phase transition temperature in FeRh films with thicknesses from 6 to 100 nm and it was observed that the hysteretic transition region broadens significantly in the thinner films.

Magneto-optical properties of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 ultrathin films

Pulse laser deposited La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 ultrathin films on SrTiO3 substrates were characterized by polar and longitudinal Kerr magneto-optical spectroscopy. An agreement between experimental and theoretical spectra was achieved for a 10.7 nm thick film, while a distinction in the Kerr effect amplitudes was obtained for a 5 nm thick film. This points to the slight suppression of ferromagnetism by interface effects. Nevertheless, the room temperature ferromagnetism of the 5 nm thick film was clearly demonstrated. All the studied films exhibit magneto-optical properties similar to single crystals and thick films, which confirms a fully developed perovskite structure even at 5 nm.
