Performances of a large mass ZnMoO4 scintillating bolometer for a next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiment

We present the performances of a 330 g zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) crystal working as scintillating bolometer as a possible candidate for a next generation experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo. The energy resolution, evaluated at the 2615 keV gamma-line of 208Tl, is 6.3 keV FWHM. The internal radioactive contaminations of the ZnMoO4 were evaluated as <6 microBq/kg (228Th) and 27\pm6 microBq/kg (226Ra). We also present the results of the alpha vs beta/gamma discrimination, obtained through the scintillation light as well as through the study of the shape of the thermal signal alone.

Noise correlation and decorrelation in arrays of bolometric detectors

Bolometers are phonon mediated detectors used in particle physics experiments to search for rare processes, such as neutrinoless double beta decay and dark matter interactions. They feature an excellent energy resolution, which is a few keV over an energy range extending from a few keV up to several MeV. Nevertheless the resolution can be limited by the noise induced by vibrations of the mechanical apparatus. In arrays of bolometers part of this noise is correlated among different detectors and can be removed using a multichannel decorrelation algorithm. In this paper we present a decorrelation method and its application to data from the CUORICINO experiment, an array of 62 TeO2 bolometers.

ZnMoO4: a promising bolometer for neutrinoless double beta decay searches

We investigate the performances of two ZnMoO4 scintillating crystals operated as bolometers, in view of a next generation experiment to search the neutrinoless double beta decay of Mo-100. We present the results of the alpha vs beta/gamma discrimination, obtained through the scintillation light as well as through the study of the shape of the thermal signal alone. The discrimination capability obtained at the 2615 keV line of Tl-208 is 8 sigma, using the heat-light scatter plot, while it exceeds 20 sigma using the shape of the thermal pulse alone. The achieved FWHM energy resolution ranges from 2.4 keV (at 238 keV) to 5.7 keV (at 2615 keV). The internal radioactive contaminations of the ZnMoO4 crystals were evaluated through a 407 hours background measurement. The obtained limit is < 32 microBq/kg for Th-228 and Ra-226. These values were used for a Monte Carlo simulation aimed at evaluating the achievable background level of a possible, future array of enriched ZnMoO4 crystals.

Double-beta decay of $^{130}$Te to the first 0$^{+}$ excited state of $^{130}$Xe with CUORICINO

The CUORICINO experiment was an array of 62 TeO$_{2}$ single-crystal bolometers with a total $^{130}$Te mass of $11.3\,$kg. The experiment finished in 2008 after more than 3 years of active operating time. Searches for both $0ν$ and $2ν$ double-beta decay to the first excited $0^{+}$ state in $^{130}$Xe were performed by studying different coincidence scenarios. The analysis was based on data representing a total exposure of N($^{130}$Te)$\cdot$t=$9.5\times10^{25}\,$y. No evidence for a signal was found. The resulting lower limits on the half lives are $T^{2ν}_{1/2}(^{130} Te\rightarrow^{130} Xe^{*})>1.3\times10^{23}\,$y (90% C.L.), and $T^{0ν}_{1/2}(^{130} Te\rightarrow^{130} Xe^{*})>9.4\times10^{23}\,$y (90% C.L.).

Optimizing the energy threshold of light detectors coupled to luminescent bolometers

Bolometers have proven to be good detectors for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay. By operating at cryogenic temperatures, they feature excellent energy resolution and low background. The detection of the possible light emitted when particles interact in the bolometer is a promising method to lower the background of the experiments. The different amount of light emitted in beta/gamma and alpha interactions, whether due to scintillation or Cerenkov emission, allows to discriminate the two interaction types. Because of the cryogenic environment, light detectors are often bolometers. In this work we present a software algorithm to lower the energy threshold of bolometric light detectors coupled to luminescent bolometers. The application to data from Ge light detectors coupled to ZnMoO4 and TeO2 bolometers shows that the energy threshold can be lowered substantially, increasing the discrimination power when the amount of emitted light is small.

Signal and noise simulation of CUORE bolometric detectors

Bolometric detectors are used in particle physics experiments to search for rare processes, such as neutrinoless double beta decay and dark matter interactions. By operating at cryogenic temperatures, they are able to detect particle energies from a few keV up to several MeV, measuring the temperature rise produced by the energy released. This work focusses on the bolometers of the CUORE experiment, which are made of TeO$_2$ crystals. The response of these detectors is nonlinear with energy and changes with the operating temperature. The noise depends on the working conditions and significantly affects the energy resolution and the detection performances at low energies. We present a software tool to simulate signal and noise of CUORE-like bolometers, including effects generated by operating temperature drifts, nonlinearities and pileups. The simulations agree well with data.

Discrimination of alpha and beta/gamma interactions in a TeO$_2$ bolometer

TeO$_2$ crystals have proven to be superb bolometers for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay in many respects. However, if used alone, they do not exhibit any feature that allows to discriminate an alpha energy deposit from a beta/gamma one. This fact limits their ability to reject the background due to natural radioactivity and eventually affects the sensitivity of the search. In this paper we show the results of a TeO$_2$ crystal where, in coincidence with its bolometric heat signal, also the luminescence light escaping the crystal is recorded. The results show that we are able to measure the light produced by beta/gamma particles, which can be explained as due to Cerenkov emission. No light is detected from alpha particles, allowing the rejection of this background source.

Feasibility study of dark matter searches with the CUORE experiment

CUORE will be a 1 ton experiment made of about 1000 TeO$_2$ bolometers. It will probe the neutrinoless double beta decay (0$ν$DBD) of $^{130}$Te, a tool to test the neutrino nature and mass. The excellent energy resolution and the low background of these detectors will make CUORE a leading experiment in this field, improving the sensitivity to the half-life of 0$ν$DBD by more than an order of magnitude. Bolometric detectors, however, are also sensitive to nuclear recoils and can be used to search for dark matter interactions. In principle CUORE, thanks to its mass, could look for an annual modulation of the counting rate at low energies. We developed a trigger and a pulse shape identification algorithm, that allow to lower the energy threshold down to the few keV region. We present the preliminary results obtained on an array made of four CUORE-like crystals, and the prospects for a dark matter search in CUORE.

Search for beta plus/EC double beta decay of 120Te

We present a search for beta plus/EC double beta decay of 120Te performed with the CUORICINO experiment, an array of TeO2 cryogenic bolometers. After collecting 0.0573 kg y of 120Te, we see no evidence of a signal and therefore set the following limits on the half-life: T1/2 (0nu) > 1.9 10^{21} y at 90% C.L. for the 0 neutrino mode and T1/2 (2nu) > 7.6 10^{19} y at 90% C.L. for the two neutrino mode. These results improve the existing limits by almost three orders of magnitude (four in the case of 0 neutrino mode).

130Te Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay with CUORICINO

We report the final result of the CUORICINO experiment. Operated between 2003 and 2008, with a total exposure of 19.75 kg y of 130Te, CUORICINO was able to set a lower bound on the 130Te 0nDBD half-life of 2.8 10^{24} years at 90% C.L. The limit here reported includes the effects of systematic uncertainties that are examined in detail in the paper. The corresponding upper bound on the neutrino Majorana mass is in the range 300--710 meV, depending on the adopted nuclear matrix element evaluation.

Response of a TeO_2 bolometer to alpha particles

$TeO_2$ crystals are used as bolometers in experiments searching for Double Beta Decay without emission of neutrinos. One of the most important issues in this extremely delicate kind of experiments is the characterization of the background. The knowledge of the response to $α$ particles in the energy range where the signal is expected is therefore a must. In this paper we report the results on the response function of a $TeO_2$ bolometer to $α$'s emitted by $^{147}$Sm dissolved in the crystal at the growth phase. A Quenching Factor of ($1.0076\pm 0.0005$) is found, independent of the temperature in the investigated range. The energy resolution on $α$ peaks shows a standard calorimeter energy dependence: $σ\; [\rm{keV}] = (0.56 \pm 0.02) \oplus (0.010 \pm 0.002)\sqrt{E[\rm{keV}]} $. Signal pulses show no difference between $α$ and $βγ$ particles

Model of the response function of large mass bolometric detectors

Large mass bolometers are used in particle physics experiments to search for rare processes. By operating at low temperature, they are able to detect particle energies from few keV up to several MeV, measuring the temperature rise produced by the energy released. This study was performed on the bolometers of the CUORE experiment. The response function of these detectors is not linear in the energy range of interest, and it changes with the operating temperature. The non-linearity is found to be dominated by the thermistor and its biasing circuit. A method to obtain a linear response is the result of this work. It allows a great simplification of the data analysis.

Muon-induced backgrounds in the CUORICINO experiment

To better understand the contribution of cosmic ray muons to the CUORICINO background, 10 plastic scintillator detectors were installed at the CUORICINO site and operated during the final 3 months of the experiment. From these measurements, an upper limit of 0.0021 counts/(keV kg yr) (95% CL) was obtained on the cosmic ray-induced background in the neutrinoless double beta decay region of interest. The measurements were also compared to Geant4 simulations.

Production of high purity TeO2 single crystals for the study of neutrinoless double beta decay

High purity TeO2 crystals are produced to be used for the search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Dedicated production lines for raw material synthesis, crystal growth and surface processing were built compliant with radio-purity constraints specific to rare event physics experiments. High sensitivity measurements of radio-isotope concentrations in raw materials, reactants, consumables, ancillaries and intermediary products used for TeO2 crystals production are reported. Production and certification protocols are presented and resulting ready-to-use TeO2 crystals are described.

Monte Carlo evaluation of the external gamma, neutron and muon induced background sources in the CUORE experiment

CUORE is a 1 ton scale cryogenic experiment aiming at the measurement of the Majorana mass of the electron neutrino. The detector is an array of 988 TeO2 bolometers used for a calorimetric detection of the two electrons emitted in the BB0n of 130Te. The sensitivity of the experiment to the lowest Majorana mass is determined by the rate of background events that can mimic a BB0n. In this paper we investigate the contribution of external sources i.e. environmental gammas, neutrons and cosmic ray muons to the CUORE background and show that the shielding setup designed for CUORE guarantees a reduction of this external background down to a level <1.0E-02 c/keV/kg/y at the Q-value, as required by the physical goal of the experiment.

Results from a search for the $0νββ$-decay of $^{130}Te$

A detailed description of the CUORICINO $^{130}Te$ neutrinoless double-beta ($\nbb$) decay experiment is given and recent results are reported. CUORICINO is an array of 62 tellurium oxide ($TeO_{2}$) bolometers with an active mass of 40.7 kg. It is cooled to $\sim 8-10$ mK by a dilution refrigerator shielded from environmental radioactivity and energetic neutrons. It is running in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Assergi, Italy. These data represent an exposure of $11.83\textrm{kg}...\textrm{y}$ or 91 mole-years of $^{130}Te$. No evidence for $\nbb$-decay was observed and a limit of $T^{0ν}_{1/2}(^{130}Te)\geq3.0\times10^{24}$ y (90% C.L.) is set. This corresponds to an upper limit on the effective mass, $< m_ν>$, between 0.19 and 0.68 eV when analyzed with the many published nuclear structure calculations. In the context of these nuclear models, the values fall within the range corresponding to the claim of evidence of $\nbb$-decay by H.V. Klapdor-Kleingrothaus, \textit{et al.} The experiment continues to acquire data.
