Polarization transfer in $^4$He$(\vec{e},e^\prime\vec{p})$$^3$H: is the ratio $G_{Ep}/G_{Mp}$ modified in medium ?

Polarization observables in the $^4$He$(\vec{e},e^\prime\vec{p})$$^3$H reaction are calculated using accurate three- and four-nucleon bound-state wave functions, a realistic model for the nuclear electromagnetic current operator, and a treatment of final-state-interactions with an optical potential. In contrast to earlier studies, no significant discrepancies are found between theory and experiment both for the ratio of transverse to longitudinal polarization transfers and for the induced polarization, when free-nucleon electromagnetic form factors are used in the current operator. The present results challenge the current interpretation of the experimental data in terms of medium-modified form factors.

Electrodisintegration of $^3$He below and above deuteron breakup threshold

Recent advances in the study of electrodisintegration of 3He are presented and discussed. The pair-correlated hyperspherical harmonics method is used to calculate the initial and final state wave functions, with a realistic Hamiltonian consisting of the Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Urbana IX three-nucleon interactions. The model for the nuclear current and charge operators retains one- and many-body contributions. Particular attention is made in the construction of the two-body current operators arising from the momentum-dependent part of the two-nucleon interaction. Three-body current operators are also included so that the full current operator is strictly conserved. The present model for the nuclear current operator is tested comparing theoretical predictions and experimental data of pd radiative capture cross section and spin observables.

Calculation of the Alpha--Particle Ground State within the Hyperspherical Harmonic Basis

The problem of calculating the four--nucleon bound state properties for the case of realistic two- and three-body nuclear potentials is studied using the hyperspherical harmonic (HH) approach. A careful analysis of the convergence of different classes of HH functions has been performed. A restricted basis is chosen to allow for accurate estimates of the binding energy and other properties of the 4He ground state. Results for various modern two-nucleon and two- plus three-nucleon interactions are presented. The 4He asymptotic normalization constants for separation in 2+2 and 1+3 clusters are also computed.

The neutron magnetic form factor G_M^n(Q^2) from Quasi-Elastic inclusive scattering data on D and 4He

We analyze cross sections for Quasi-Elastic inclusive scattering of electrons on nuclei and show that the observed isolated peaks for relatively low $Q^2$ are unique for the lightest targets. Focusing in particular on D and $^4$He, we investigate in two ways to what measure the above peaks can be allocated to nucleon-elastic processes. We first compute approximate upper limits for the nucleon-inelastic background in the Quasi-Elastic region due to inclusive $Δ$ excitation, and find those to be small. Far more precise is a semi-phenomenological approach, where the dominance of nucleon-elastic processes is translated into a set of stringent requirements. We show that those are very well fulfilled for recent D data, and to a somewhat lesser extent for older D and $^4$He data. With knowledge of $G_{E,M}^p$ and information on $G_E^n$, we then extract $G_M^n$ and find agreement with values obtained by alternative methods. We discuss the sensitivity of the extraction method and mention future applications.

N-d scattering including electromagnetic forces

The electromagnetic potential consisting in the Coulomb plus the magnetic moment interactions between two nucleons is studied in nucleon-deuteron scattering. For states in which the relative N-d angular momentum L has low values the three--nucleon problem has been solved using the correlated hyperspherical harmonic expansion basis. For states in which the angular momentum L has large values, explicit formulae for the nucleon-deuteron magnetic moment interaction are derived and used to calculate the corresponding T-matrices in Born approximation. Then, the transition matrices describing N-d elastic scattering have been derived including an infinite number of partial waves as required by the 1/r^3 behavior of the magnetic moment interaction. Appreciable effects are observed in the vector analyzing powers at low energies. The evolution of these effects by increasing the collision energy is examined.

Recent Developments in Few-Nucleon Systems

N-d elastic scattering is studied at different energies using one of the modern NN interactions, the Argonne v_{18} which explicitly includes the magnetic moment interaction between two nucleons. This interaction, which has been often neglected in the description of the few-nucleon continuum, produces sizable modifications in some elastic observables. Its effects, as well as those produced by the Coulomb potential, are analyzed as a function of energy. The magnetic moment interaction produces appreciable effects in $p-d$ scattering at low energies butthey are very small above 10 MeV. Above 65 MeV Coulomb effects can be observed only in specific observables as for example $T_{21}$.

Three-Nucleon Electroweak Capture Reactions

Recent advances in the study of the p-d radiative and mu-3he weak capture processes are presented and discussed. The three-nucleon bound and scattering states are obtained using the correlated-hyperspherical-harmonics method, with realistic Hamiltonians consisting of the Argonne v14 or Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Tucson-Melbourne or Urbana IX three-nucleon interactions. The electromagnetic and weak transition operators include one- and two-body contributions. The theoretical accuracy achieved in these calculations allows for interesting comparisons with experimental data.

Parameter-free effective field theory calculation for the solar proton-fusion and hep processes

Spurred by the recent complete determination of the weak currents in two-nucleon systems up to ${\cal O}(Q^3)$ in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory, we carry out a parameter-free calculation of the threshold $S$-factors for the solar $pp$ (proton-fusion) and $hep$ processes in an effective field theory that {\it combines} the merits of the standard nuclear physics method and systematic chiral expansion. The power of the EFT adopted here is that one can correlate in a unified formalism the weak-current matrix elements of two-, three- and four-nucleon systems. Using the tritium $β$-decay rate as an input to fix the only unknown parameter in the theory, we can evaluate the threshold $S$ factors with drastically improved precision; the results are $S_{pp}(0) = 3.94\times(1 \pm 0.004) \times 10^{-25} {MeV-b}$ and $S_{hep}(0) = (8.6\pm 1.3)\times 10^{-20} {keV-b}$. The dependence of the calculated $S$-factors on the momentum cutoff parameter $Λ$ has been examined for a physically reasonable range of $Λ$. This dependence is found to be extremely small for the $pp$ process, and to be within acceptable levels for the $hep$ process, substantiating the consistency of our calculational scheme.

Theoretical Study of the ^3He(mu^-,nu_mu)^3H Capture

The ^3He(mu^-,nu_mu)^3H weak capture is studied using correlated-hyperspherical-harmonics wave functions, obtained from realistic Hamiltonians consisting of the Argonne $v_{14}$ or Argonne $v_{18}$ two-nucleon, and Tucson-Melbourne or Urbana-IX three-nucleon interactions. The nuclear weak charge and current operators have vector and axial-vector components that include one- and two-body contributions. The strength of the leading two-body operator in the axial-vector current is adjusted to reproduce the Gamow-Teller matrix element in tritium $β$-decay. The calculated total capture rate is in excellent agreement with the most recent experimental determination $1496\pm 4$ sec$^{-1}$, when the PCAC value is adopted for the induced pseudo-scalar coupling constant $g_{PS}$. The predictions for the capture rate and angular correlation parameters $A_v$, $A_t$, and $A_Δ$ are found to be only very weakly dependent on the model input Hamiltonian. The variation of these observables with $g_{PS}$ and the theoretical uncertainties deriving from the model-dependent procedure used to constrain the axial current are investigated.

The three-nucleon bound state using realistic potential models

The bound states of $^3$H and $^3$He have been calculated using the Argonne $v_{18}$ plus the Urbana three-nucleon potential. The isospin $T=3/2$ state have been included in the calculations as well as the $n$-$p$ mass difference. The $^3$H-$^3$He mass difference has been evaluated through the charge dependent terms explicitly included in the two-body potential. The calculations have been performed using two different methods: the solution of the Faddeev equations in momentum space and the expansion on the correlated hyperspherical harmonic basis. The results are in agreement within 0.1% and can be used as benchmark tests. Results for the CD-Bonn interaction are also presented. It is shown that the $^3$H and $^3$He binding energy difference can be predicted model independently.

GRS computation of deep inelastic electron scattering on 4He

We compute cross sections for inclusive scattering of high energy electrons on 4He, based on the two lowest orders of the Gersch-Rodriguez-Smith (GRS) series. The required one- and two-particle density matrices are obtained from non-relativistic 4He wave functions using realistic models for the nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interaction. Predictions for E=3.6 GeV agree well with the NE3 SLAC-Virginia data.

Low-energy p-d Scattering: High Precision Data, Comparisons with Theory, and Phase-Shift Analyses

Angular distributions of sigma(theta), A_y, iT_11, T_20, T_21, and T_22 have been measured for d-p scattering at E_c.m.=667 keV. This set of high-precision data is compared to variational calculations with the nucleon-nucleon potential alone and also to calculations including a three-nucleon (3N) potential. Agreement with cross-section and tensor analyzing power data is excellent when a 3N potential is used. However, a comparison between the vector analyzing powers reveals differences of approximately 40% in the maxima of the angular distributions which is larger than reported at higher energies for both p-d and n-d scattering. Single-energy phase-shift analyses were performed on this data set and a similar data set at E_c.m.=431.3 keV. The role of the different phase-shift parameters in fitting these data is discussed.

The Solar hep Process in Effective Field Theory

Using effective field theory, we calculate the S-factor for the hep process in a totally parameter-free formulation. The transition operators are organized according to chiral counting, and their matrix elements are evaluated using the realistic nuclear wave functions obtained in the correlated-hyperspherical-harmonics method. Terms of up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory are considered. Fixing the only parameter in the theory by fitting the tritium β-decay rate, we predict the hep S-factor with accuracy better than \sim 20 %.

Parameter-Free Calculation of the Solar Proton Fusion Rate in Effective Field Theory

Spurred by the recent complete determination of the weak currents in two-nucleon systems up to ${\cal O}(Q^3)$ in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory, we carry out a parameter-free calculation of the solar proton fusion rate in an effective field theory that combines the merits of the standard nuclear physics method and systematic chiral expansion. Using the tritium beta-decay rate as an input to fix the only unknown parameter in the effective Lagrangian, we can evaluate with drastically improved precision the ratio of the two-body contribution to the well established one-body contribution; the ratio is determined to be (0.86\pm 0.05) %. This result is essentially independent of the cutoff parameter for a wide range of its variation (500 MeV \le Λ\le 800 MeV), a feature that substantiates the consistency of the calculation.

Benchmark Test Calculation of a Four-Nucleon Bound State

In the past, several efficient methods have been developed to solve the Schroedinger equation for four-nucleon bound states accurately. These are the Faddeev-Yakubovsky, the coupled-rearrangement-channel Gaussian-basis variational, the stochastic variational, the hyperspherical variational, the Green's function Monte Carlo, the no-core shell model and the effective interaction hyperspherical harmonic methods. In this article we compare the energy eigenvalue results and some wave function properties using the realistic AV8' NN interaction. The results of all schemes agree very well showing the high accuracy of our present ability to calculate the four-nucleon bound state.

Coulomb effects in nucleon-deuteron polarization-transfer coefficients

Coulomb effects in the neutron-deuteron and proton-deuteron polarization-transfer coefficients $K_y^{y'}$, $K_z^{x'}$, $K_y^{x'x'-y'y'}$ and $K_y^{z'z'}$ are studied at energies above the deuteron breakup threshold. Theoretical predictions for these observables are evaluated in the framework of the Kohn Variational Principle using correlated basis functions to expand the three-nucleon scattering wave function. The two-nucleon Argonne $v_{18}$ and the three-nucleon Urbana IX potentials are considered. In the proton-deuteron case, the Coulomb interaction between the two protons is included explicitly and the results are compared to the experimental data available at $E_{lab}=10,19,22.7$ MeV. In the neutron-deuteron case, a comparison to a recent measurement of $K_y^{y'}$ by Hempen {\sl et al.} at $E_{lab}=19$ MeV evidences a contribution of the calculated Coulomb effects opposite to those extracted from the experiment.

The Ay Problem for p-3He Elastic Scattering

We present evidence that numerically accurate quantum calculations employing modern internucleon forces do not reproduce the proton analyzing power, A_y, for p-3He elastic scattering at low energies. These calculations underpredict new measured analyzing powers by approximately 30% at E_{c.m.} = 1.20 MeV and by 40% at E_{c.m.} = 1.69 MeV, an effect analogous to a well-known problem in p-d and n-d scattering. The calculations are performed using the complex Kohn variational principle and the (correlated) Hyperspherical Harmonics technique with full treatment of the Coulomb force. The inclusion of the three-nucleon interaction does not improve the agreement with the experimental data.
