Development for the Belle II vertex detector upgrade with depleted monolithic active pixel sensors

The vertex detector upgrade project for the Belle II experiment, based on CMOS depleted monolithic active pixel sensor technology, is planned to be carried out in conjunction with the major modification of the interaction region of the SuperKEKB collider during Long Shutdown 2 from 2032 to 2034. The MAPS sensor, named OBELIX currently under development, is derived from the successor to TJ-Monopix2, with modifications implemented to ensure compatibility with the Belle II trigger system. The new vertex detector consists of two layers of four self-supported consecutive OBELIX sensors, and three layers of discrete OBELIX sensors mounted on mechanical support structures with readout flex circuits attached to the sensors. The detector is arranged cylindrically around the beam pipe at radii ranging from 14 mm to 140 mm. The minimization of the material budget is required in order to enhance physics performance. We present an overview of the project and its latest developments, with particular emphasis on the development of low-material-budget flex circuits employing aluminum conductors.

Application of exhaustive simulation flow for advanced performance prediction of monolithic active pixel sensors

Monolithic active pixel sensor (MAPS) developments have pushed the detection performance in various directions, especially relative to timing where nanosecond-level precision is now considered. This evolution calls for a simultaneous upgrade of the simulation tools. We have developed a simulation flow that covers steps from the signal creation in the sensitive volume to the output of the pixel digital logic that performs the time-of-arrival and time-over-threshold (ToA/ToT) measurements. This approach adds several new features to the traditional use the of the TCAD - Allpix Squared duo, among which : the integration of the pixel wells from the layout in order to precisely describe the pixel key characteristics such as leakage and punch-through currents and the coupling of Monte Carlo simulations (Allpix Squared) with high precision electrical simulations (SPICE). The first (Allpix Squared) for the precise description of the current induced at the collection electrode and the second (SPICE) to guarantee high precision simulation of the front-end electronics using realistic signal events. Irradiation is also modeled, both from the charge propagation side (charge trapping) and from the front-end response side (high input signal discharge). We have applied this methodology to the MAPS developed in the context of the Belle II vertex detector upgrade. In this contribution, we detail the key features of the exhaustive simulation flow, present the outcome of the comparison with the TJ-Monopix2 measurements and discuss the interest of the methodology for the development of modern MAPS.

Structural and magnetic properties of 3d transition metal oxide chains on the (001) surfaces of Ir and Pt

We present a survey of the structural and magnetic properties of submonolayer transition metal dioxides on the (001) surfaces of the heavy face-centered cubic (fcc) noble metals Ir and Pt performed by spin-averaged scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spin-polarized (SP-)STM. Our STM results confirm that deposition of Co, Fe, Mn, and Cr on the (2 {\times} 1) oxygen-reconstructed Ir(001) surface leads to the formation of quasi one-dimensional chains with a (3 {\times} 1) unit cell. As recently predicted by density functional theory [Ferstl et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 046101 (2016)], our SP-STM images of FeO2 and MnO2 on Ir(001) show a two-fold periodicity along the chains which is characteristic for an antiferromagnetic coupling along the chains. In addition, these two materials also exhibit spontaneous, permanent, and long-range magnetic coupling across the chains. Whereas we find a ferromagnetic inter-chain coupling for FeO2/Ir(001), the magnetic coupling of MnO2 on Ir(001) appears to be a non-collinear 120° spin spiral, resulting in a (9 {\times} 2) magnetic unit cell. On Pt(001) patches of (3 {\times} 1)-reconstructed oxide chains could only be prepared by transition metal (Co, Fe, and Mn) deposition onto the cold substrate and subsequent annealing in an oxygen atmosphere. Again SP-STM on MnO2/Pt(001) reveals a very large, (15 {\times} 2) magnetic unit cell which can tentatively be explained by a commensurate 72° spin spiral. Large scale SP-STM images reveal a long wavelength spin rotation along the MnO2 chain.

Radiation-induced Effects on Data Integrity and Link Stability of the RD53A Pixel Readout Chip

The phase-2 upgrade of the LHC will require novel pixel readout chips, which deliver hit information at drastically increased data rates and tolerate unprecedented radiation levels. The large-scale prototype chip RD53A has been designed by the RD53 collaboration and manufactured in a 65 nm CMOS process, suitable for the innermost layers of both the ATLAS and the CMS experiment. In order to verify the radiation hardness design goal of 500 Mrad total ionizing dose, RD53A has been irradiated using X-rays. The radiation effects on the performance of the data link, reset circuit and the clock generation have been investigated. Furthermore, the operating margins in terms of supply voltage and frequency have been analyzed.

Generation and Characterization of Electron Bunches with Ramped Current Profiles in a Dual-Frequency Superconducting Linear Accelerator

We report on the successful experimental generation of electron bunches with ramped current profiles. The technique relies on impressing nonlinear correlations in the longitudinal phase space using a superconducing radiofrequency linear accelerator operating at two frequencies and a current-enhancing dispersive section. The produced $\sim 700$-MeV bunches have peak currents of the order of a kilo-Ampère. Data taken for various accelerator settings demonstrate the versatility of the method and in particular its ability to produce current profiles that have a quasi-linear dependency on the longitudinal (temporal) coordinate. The measured bunch parameters are shown, via numerical simulations, to produce gigavolt-per-meter peak accelerating electric fields with transformer ratios larger than 2 in dielectric-lined waveguides.

Flavour changing effects on e^+ e^- -> H b \bar{s}, H \bar{b} s in the MSSM

Flavour changing effects originating from the exchange of scalar particles in the processes e^+ e^- -> H b \bar{s}, H \bar{b} s, with H = h^0, H^0, A^0, are investigated in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with non-minimal flavour violation at the one-loop level. The dominating SUSY-QCD contributions with squark--gluino loops are calculated and discussed. We consider the SUSY scenario with non-minimal flavour mixing in the down-type squark-mass matrix. The flavour-changing cross sections are derived, and we discuss the dependence on the MSSM parameters and the strength of flavour mixing. The values for the cross section can reach 10^{-4} pb for the production of the heavy Higgs boson H^0 or A^0, and only 10^{-7} pb for the light Higgs boson h^0. Non-decoupling behaviour occurs for both h^0, H^0 production in the case of a common heavy SUSY mass scale.

Spin motion at and near orbital resonance in storage rings with Siberian Snakes. Part I: at orbital resonance

Here, and in a sequel, we invoke the invariant spin field to provide an in--depth study of spin motion at and near low order orbital resonances in a simple model for the effects of vertical betatron motion in a storage ring with Siberian Snakes. This leads to a clear understanding, within the model, of the behaviour of the beam polarisation at and near so--called snake resonances in proton storage rings.

Magnons in the ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model

The magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model (FKLM) are investigated. Starting from an analysis of the magnon spectrum in the spin-wave regime, we examine the ferromagnetic stability as a function of the occupation of the conduction band $n$ and the strength $J$ of the coupling between the localised moments and the conduction electrons. From the properties of the spin-wave stiffness $D$ the ferromagnetic phase at zero temperature is derived. Using an approximate formula the critical temperature $T_c$ is calculated as a function of $J$ and $n$.

A Numerical Estimate of the Small-$k_T$ Region in the BFKL Pomeron

A computer study is performed to estimate the influence of the small-$k_T$ region in the BFKL evolution equation. We consider the small-x region of the deep inelastic structure function $F_2$ and show that the magnitude of the small-$k_T$ region depends on $Q^2$ and $x_B$. We suggest that the width of the $\log k_T^2$-distribution in the final state may serve as an additional footprint of BFKL dynamics. For diffractive dissociation it is shown that the contribution of the infrared region is large - even for large $Q^2$. This contribution becomes smaller only if restrictions on the final state are imposed.
