Kondo screening in a Majorana metal

Kondo impurities provide a nontrivial probe to unravel the character of the excitations of a quantum spin liquid. In the S=1/2 Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, Kondo impurities embedded in the spin-liquid host can be screened by itinerant Majorana fermions via gauge-flux binding. Here, we report experimental signatures of metallic-like Kondo screening at intermediate temperatures in the Kitaev honeycomb material α-RuCl3 with dilute Cr3+ (S=3/2) impurities. The static magnetic susceptibility, the muon Knight shift, and the muon spin-relaxation rate all feature logarithmic divergences, a hallmark of a metallic Kondo effect. Concurrently, the linear coefficient of the magnetic specific heat is large in the same temperature regime, indicating the presence of a host Majorana metal. This observation opens new avenues for exploring uncharted Kondo physics in insulating quantum magnets.

Field-induced intermediate phase in $α$-RuCl$_3$: Non-coplanar order, phase diagram, and proximate spin liquid

Frustrated magnets with strong spin-orbit coupling promise to host topological states of matter, with fractionalized excitations and emergent gauge fields. Kitaev's proposal for a honeycomb-lattice Majorana spin liquid has triggered an intense search for experimental realizations, with bond-dependent Ising interaction being the essential building block. A prime candidate is $α$-RuCl$_3$ whose phase diagram in a magnetic field is, however, not understood to date. Here we present conclusive experimental evidence for a novel field-induced ordered phase in $α$-RuCl$_3$, sandwiched between the zigzag and quantum disordered phases at low and high fields, respectively. We provide a detailed theoretical study of the relevant effective spin model which we show to display a field-induced intermediate phase as well. We fully characterize the intermediate phase within this model, including its complex spin structure, and pinpoint the parameters relevant to $α$-RuCl$_3$ based on the experimentally observed critical fields. Most importantly, our study connects the physics of $α$-RuCl$_3$ to that of the Kitaev-$Γ$ model, which displays a quantum spin liquid phase in zero field, and hence reveals the spin liquid whose signatures have been detected in a variety of dynamical probes of $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Field-induced phase transitions of the Kitaev material $α$-RuCl$_3$ probed by thermal expansion and magnetostriction

High-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements were performed on single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_3$ in magnetic fields applied parallel to the Ru-Ru bonds. The length changes were measured in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. Our data show clear thermodynamic characteristics for the field-induced phase transition at the critical field $μ_0H_{c1} = 7.8(2)$ T where the antiferromagnetic zigzag order is suppressed. At higher fields, a kink in the magnetostriction coefficient signals an additional phase transition around $μ_0H_{c2} \approx 11$ T. The extracted Grüneisen parameter shows typical hallmarks for quantum criticality near $H_{c1}$, but also displays anomalous behavior above $H_{c1}$. We compare our experimental data with linear spin-wave calculations employing a minimal Kitaev-Heisenberg model in the semiclassical limit. Most of the salient features are in agreement with each other, however, the peculiar features in the high-field region above $H_{c1}$ cannot be accounted for in our modelling and hence suggest a genuine quantum nature. We construct a phase diagram for $α$-RuCl$_3$ showing two low-temperature transitions induced by an in-plane field along the Ru-Ru bonds.

Spin-glass state and reversed magnetic anisotropy induced by Cr doping in the Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$

Magnetic properties of the substitution series Ru$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Cl$_3$ were investigated to determine the evolution from the anisotropic Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ with $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ magnetic Ru$^{3+}$ ions to the isotropic Heisenberg magnet CrCl$_3$ with $S = 3/2$ magnetic Cr$^{3+}$ ions. Magnetization measurements on single crystals revealed a reversal of the magnetic anisotropy under doping, which we argue to arise from the competition between anisotropic Kitaev and off-diagonal interactions on the Ru-Ru links and approximately isotropic Cr-Ru and isotropic Cr-Cr interactions. In addition, combined magnetization, ac susceptibility and specific-heat measurements clearly show the destabilization of the long-range magnetic order of $α$-RuCl$_3$ in favor of a spin-glass state of Ru$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Cl$_3$ for a low doping of $x\backsimeq0.1$. The corresponding freezing temperature as a function of Cr content shows a broad maximum around $x\backsimeq0.45$.

Signatures of low-energy fractionalized excitations in $α$-RuCl$_3$ from field-dependent microwave absorption

Topologically ordered states of matter are generically characterized by excitations with quantum number fractionalization. A prime example is the spin liquid realized in Kitaev's honeycomb-lattice compass model where spin-flip excitations fractionalize into Majorana fermions and Ising gauge fluxes. While numerous compounds have been proposed to be proximate to such a spin-liquid phase, clear-cut evidence for fractionalized excitations is lacking. Here we employ microwave absorption measurements to study the low-energy excitations in $α$-RuCl$_3$ over a wide range of frequencies, magnetic fields, and temperatures, covering in particular the vicinity of the field-driven quantum phase transition where long-range magnetic order disappears. In addition to conventional gapped magnon modes we find a highly unusual broad continuum characteristic of fractionalization which -- most remarkably -- extends to energies below the lowest sharp mode and to temperatures significantly higher than the ordering temperature, and develops a gap of a nontrivial origin in strong magnetic fields. Our results unravel the signatures of fractionalized excitations in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and pave the way to a more complete understanding of the Kitaev spin liquid and its instabilities.

Spin freezing in the disordered pyrochlore magnet NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$: NMR studies and Monte-Carlo simulations

We present results of $^{23}$Na and $^{19}$F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$, a frustrated pyrochlore magnet with a Curie-Weiss temperature, $T_{cw}$ ~-140 K, and intrinsic bond disorder. Below 3.6 K both the $^{23}$Na and $^{19}$F spectra broaden substantially in comparison to higher temperatures accompanied by a considerable reduction (80 \%) of the NMR signal intensity: This proves a broad quasi-static field distribution. The $^{19}$F spin-lattice relaxation rate $^{19}(1/T_1$) exhibits a peak at 2.9 K already starting to develop below 10 K. We attribute the spin freezing to the presence of bond disorder. This is corroborated by large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations of a classical bond-disordered XY model on the pyrochlore lattice. The low freezing temperature, together with the very short magnetic correlation length not captured by the simulations, suggesting that quantum effects play a decisive role in NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$.

Field-induced quantum criticality in the Kitaev system $α$-RuCl$_3$

$α$-RuCl$_3$ has attracted enormous attention since it has been proposed as a prime candidate to study fractionalized magnetic excitations akin to Kitaev's honeycomb-lattice spin liquid. We have performed a detailed specific-heat investigation at temperatures down to $0.4$ K in applied magnetic fields up to $9$ T for fields parallel to the $ab$ plane. We find a suppression of the zero-field antiferromagnetic order, together with an increase of the low-temperature specific heat, with increasing field up to $μ_0H_c\approx 6.9$ T. Above $H_c$, the magnetic contribution to the low-temperature specific heat is strongly suppressed, implying the opening of a spin-excitation gap. Our data point toward a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) at $H_c$; this is supported by universal scaling behavior near $H_c$. Remarkably, the data also reveal the existence of a small characteristic energy scale well below $1$~meV above which the excitation spectrum changes qualitatively. We relate the data to theoretical calculations based on a $J_1$--$K_1$--$Γ_1$--$J_3$ honeycomb model.

Incommensurate short-range multipolar order parameter of phase II in Ce3Pd20Si6

The clathrate compound Ce3Pd20Si6 is a heavy-fermion metal that exhibits magnetically hidden order at low temperatures. Reputedly, this exotic type of magnetic ground state, known as "phase II", could be associated with the ordering of Ce 4f quadrupolar moments. In contrast to conventional (dipolar) order, it has vanishing Bragg intensity in zero magnetic field and, as a result, has escaped direct observation by neutron scattering until now. Here we report the observation of diffuse magnetic neutron scattering induced by an application of magnetic field along either the [110] or the [001] direction within phase II. The broad elastic magnetic signal that surrounds the (111) structural Bragg peak can be attributed to a short-range G-type antiferromagnetic arrangement of field-induced dipoles modulated by the underlying multipolar order on the simple-cubic sublattice of Ce ions occupying the 8c Wyckoff site. In addition, for magnetic fields applied along the [001] direction, the diffuse magnetic peaks in Ce3Pd20Si6 become incommensurate, suggesting a more complex modulated structure of the underlying multipolar order that can be continuously tuned by a magnetic field.

Linked-cluster expansions for quantum magnets on the hypercubic lattice

For arbitrary space dimension $d$ we investigate the quantum phase transitions of two paradigmatic spin models defined on a hypercubic lattice, the coupled-dimer Heisenberg model and the transverse-field Ising model. To this end high-order linked-cluster expansions for the ground-state energy and the one-particle gap are performed up to order 9 about the decoupled-dimer and high-field limits, respectively. Extrapolations of the high-order series yield the location of the quantum phase transition and the correlation-length exponent $ν$ as a function of space dimension $d$. The results are complemented by $1/d$ expansions to next-to-leading order of observables across the phase diagrams. Remarkably, our analysis of the extrapolated linked-cluster expansion allows to extract the coefficients of the full $1/d$ expansion for the phase-boundary location in both models exactly in leading order and quantitatively for subleading corrections.

Role of commensurate and incommensurate low-energy excitations in the paramagnetic to hidden-order transition of URu$_2$Si$_2$

We report low-energy inelastic neutron scattering data of the paramagnetic (PM) to hidden-order (HO) phase transition at $T_0=17.5\,{\rm K}$ in URu$_2$Si$_2$. While confirming previous results for the HO and PM phases, our data reveal a pronounced wavevector dependence of low-energy excitations across the phase transition. To analyze the energy scans we employ a damped harmonic oscillator model containing a fit parameter $1/Γ$ which is expected to diverge at a second-order phase transition. Counter to expectations the excitations at $\vec{Q}_1=(1.44,0,0)$ show an abrupt step-like suppression of $1/Γ$ below $T_0$, whereas excitations at $\vec{Q}_0=(1,0,0)$, associated with large-moment antiferromagnetism (LMAF) under pressure, show an enhancement and a pronounced peak of $1/Γ$ at $T_0$. Therefore, at the critical HO temperature $T_0$, LMAF fluctuations become nearly critical as well. This is the behavior expected of a super-vector order parameter with nearly degenerate components for the HO and LMAF leading to nearly isotropic fluctuations in the combined order-parameter space.

Dynamical structure factors and excitation modes of the bilayer Heisenberg model

Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations along with higher-order spin-wave theory, bond-operator and strong-coupling expansions, we analyse the dynamical spin structure factor of the spin-half Heisenberg model on the square-lattice bilayer. We identify distinct contributions from the low-energy Goldstone modes in the magnetically ordered phase and the gapped triplon modes in the quantum disordered phase. In the antisymmetric (with respect to layer inversion) channel, the dynamical spin structure factor exhibits a continuous evolution of spectral features across the quantum phase transition, connecting the two types of modes. Instead, in the symmetric channel we find a depletion of the spectral weight when moving from the ordered to the disordered phase. While the dynamical spin structure factor does not exhibit a well-defined distinct contribution from the amplitude (or Higgs) mode in the ordered phase, we identify an only marginally-damped amplitude mode in the dynamical singlet structure factor, obtained from interlayer bond correlations, in the vicinity of the quantum critical point. These findings provide quantitative information in direct relation to possible neutron or light scattering experiments in a fundamental two-dimensional quantum-critical spin system.

Non-Fermi-liquid scattering rates and anomalous band dispersion in ferropnictides

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is used to study the band dispersion and the quasiparticle scattering rates in two ferropnictides systems. Our ARPES results show linear-in-energy dependent scattering rates which are constant in a wide range of control parameter and which depend on the orbital character of the bands. We demonstrate that the linear energy dependence gives rise to weakly dispersing band with a strong mass enhancement when the band maximum crosses the chemical potential. In the superconducting phase the related small effective Fermi energy favors a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)\,\cite{Bardeen1957}-Bose-Einstein (BE)\,\cite{Bose1924} crossover state.

The Hour-Glass Magnetic Spectrum Arising from a Striped, Cluster Spin Glass Ground State in La1.75Sr0.25CoO4

We report inelastic neutron scattering results that reveal an hour-glass magnetic excitation spectrum in La1.75Sr0.25CoO4. The magnetic spectrum is similar to that observed previously in La1.67Sr0.33CoO4, but the spectral features are broader. We show that the spectrum of La1.75Sr0.25CoO4 can be modeled by the spin dynamics of a system with a disordered cluster spin glass ground state. Bulk magnetization measurements are presented which support the proposed glassy ground state. The observations reiterate the importance of quasi-one-dimensional magnetic correlations and disorder for the hour-glass spectrum, and suggest that disordered spin and charge stripes exist at lower doping in La2-xSrxCoO4 than previously thought.

Two-particle decay and quantum criticality in dimerized antiferromagnets

In certain Mott-insulating dimerized antiferromagnets, triplet excitations of the paramagnetic phase can decay into the two-particle continuum. When such a magnet undergoes a quantum phase transition into a magnetically ordered state, this coupling becomes part of the critical theory provided that the lattice ordering wavevector is zero. One microscopic example is the staggered-dimer antiferromagnet on the square lattice, for which deviations from O(3) universality have been reported in numerical studies. Using both symmetry arguments and microscopic calculations, we show that a non-trivial cubic term arises in the relevant order-parameter quantum field theory, and assess its consequences using a combination of analytical and numerical methods. We also present finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo data for the staggered-dimer antiferromagnet which complement recently published results. The data can be consistently interpreted in terms of critical exponents identical to that of the standard O(3) universality class, but with anomalously large corrections to scaling. We argue that the two-particle decay of critical triplons, although irrelevant in two spatial dimensions, is responsible for the leading corrections to scaling due to its small scaling dimension.

Tunable Kondo-Luttinger systems far from equilibrium

We theoretically investigate the non-equilibrium current through a quantum dot coupled to one- dimensional electron leads, utilizing a controlled frequency-dependent renormalization group (RG) approach. We compute the non-equilibrium conductance for large bias voltages and address the interplay between decoherence, Kondo entanglement and Luttinger physics. The combined effect of large bias voltage and strong interactions in the leads, known to stabilize two-channel Kondo physics, leads to non-trivial modifications of the conductance. For weak interactions, we build an analogy to a dot coupled to helical edge states of two-dimensional topological insulators.

Parasitic small-moment-antiferromagnetism and non-linear coupling of hidden order and antiferromagnetism in URu2Si2 observed by Larmor diffraction

We report simultaneous measurements of the distribution of lattice constants and the antiferromagnetic moment in high-purity URu2Si2, using both Larmor and conventional neutron diffraction, as a function of temperature and pressure up to 18 kbar. We establish that the tiny moment in the hidden order (HO) state is purely parasitic and quantitatively originates from the distribution of lattice constants. Moreover, the HO and large-moment antiferromagnetism (LMAF) at high pressure are separated by a line of first-order phase transitions, which ends in a bicritical point. Thus the HO and LMAF are coupled non-linearly and must have different symmetry, as expected of the HO being, e.g., incommensurate orbital currents, helicity order, or multipolar order.

Pressure dependence of the magnetization of URu2Si2

The ground state of URu2Si2 changes from so-called hidden order (HO) to large-moment antiferromagnetism (LMAF) upon applying hydrostatic pressure in excess of 14 kbar. We report the dc-magnetization M(B,T,p) of URu2Si2 for magnetic fields B up to 12 T, temperatures T in the range 2 to 100 K, and pressure p up to 17 kbar. Remarkably, characteristic scales such as the coherence temperature T*, the transition temperature T0, and the anisotropy in the magnetization depend only weakly on the applied pressure. However, the discontinuity in dM/dT at T0, which measures the magnetocaloric effect, decreases nearly 50 % upon applying 17 kbar for M and B parallel to the tetragonal c-axis, while it increases 15-fold for the a-axis. Our findings suggest that the HO and LMAF phases have an astonishing degree of similarity in their physical properties, but a key difference is the magnetocaloric effect near T0 in the basal plane.
