Weakly interacting massive particle cross section limits from LOFAR observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies

Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) can self-annihilate, thus providing us with a way to indirectly detect dark matter (DM). Dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies are excellent places to search for annihilation signals because they are rich in DM and background emission is low. If magnetic fields in dSph galaxies exist, the particles produced in DM annihilation emit synchrotron radiation. We used the non-detection of 150 MHz radio continuum emission from dSph galaxies with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) to derive constraints on the annihilation cross section of WIMPs in electron-positron pairs. Our main underlying assumption is that the transport of the cosmic rays can be described by the diffusion approximation, which necessitates the existence of magnetic fields. We used observations of six dSph galaxies in the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). The data were reimaged and radial profiles were generated. We also used stacking to increase the sensitivity. In order to derive upper limits on the WIMP cross section, we injected fake Gaussian sources into the data, which were then detected with 2$\sigma$ significance in the radial profile. These sources represent the lowest emission we would have been able to detect. We present limits from the observations of individual galaxies as well as from stacking. We explored the uncertainty due to the choice of diffusion and magnetic field parameters by constructing three different model scenarios: optimistic (OPT), intermediate (INT), and pessimistic (PES). Assuming monochromatic annihilation into electron-positron pairs, the limits from the INT scenario exclude thermal WIMPs below 20 GeV, and the limits from the OPT scenario even exclude thermal WIMPs below 70 GeV. The INT limits can compete with limits set by Fermi-LAT using $\gamma$-ray observations of multiple dwarf galaxies, and they are especially strong for low WIMP masses.

Resummed photon spectrum from dark matter annihilation for intermediate and narrow energy resolution

The annihilation cross section of weakly interacting TeV scale dark matter particles $\chi^0$ into photons is affected by large quantum corrections due to electroweak Sudakov logarithms and the Sommerfeld effect. We extend our previous work on the resummation of the semi-inclusive photon energy spectrum in $\chi^0\chi^0\to \gamma+X$ in the vicinity of the maximal photon energy $E_\gamma = m_\chi$ with NLL' accuracy from the case of narrow photon energy resolution $E^\gamma_{\rm res}$ of order $m_W^2/m_\chi$ to intermediate resolution of order $E^\gamma_{\rm res} \sim m_W$. We also provide details on the previous narrow resolution calculation. The two calculations, performed in different effective field theory set-ups for the wino dark matter model, are then shown to match well, providing an accurate representation up to energy resolutions of about 300 GeV.

Energetic $\gamma$-rays from TeV scale dark matter annihilation resummed

The annihilation cross section of TeV scale dark matter particles $\chi^0$ with electroweak charges into photons is affected by large quantum corrections due to Sudakov logarithms and the Sommerfeld effect. We calculate the semi-inclusive photon energy spectrum in $\chi^0\chi^0\to \gamma+X$ in the vicinity of the maximal photon energy $E_\gamma = m_\chi$ with NLL' accuracy in an all-order summation of the electroweak perturbative expansion adopting the pure wino model. This results in the most precise theoretical prediction of the annihilation rate for $\gamma$-ray telescopes with photon energy resolution of parametric order $m_W^2/m_\chi$ for photons with TeV energies.

Soliton operators in the quantum equivalence of the $CP_1$ and $O(3)-σ$ models

We discuss some interesting aspects of the well known quantum equivalence between the $O(3)-σ$ and $CP_1$ models in $3D$, working in the canonical and in the path integral formulations. We show first that the canonical quantization in the hamiltonian formulation is free of ordering ambiguities for both models. We use the canonical map between the fields and momenta of the two models and compute the relevant functional determinant to verify the equivalence between the phase-space partition functions and the quantum equivalence in all the topological sectors. We also use the explicit form of the map to construct the soliton operator of the $O(3)-σ$ model starting from the representation of the operator in the $CP_1$ model, and discuss their properties
