Imaging of a Transitional Disk Gap in Reflected Light: Indications of Planet Formation Around the Young Solar Analog LkCa 15

We present H- and Ks-band imaging data resolving the gap in the transitional disk around LkCa 15, revealing the surrounding nebulosity. We detect sharp elliptical contours delimiting the nebulosity on the inside as well as the outside, consistent with the shape, size, ellipticity, and orientation of starlight reflected from the far-side disk wall, whereas the near-side wall is shielded from view by the disk's optically thick bulk. We note that forward-scattering of starlight on the near-side disk surface could provide an alternate interpretation of the nebulosity. In either case, this discovery provides confirmation of the disk geometry that has been proposed to explain the spectral energy distributions (SED) of such systems, comprising an optically thick outer disk with an inner truncation radius of ~46 AU enclosing a largely evacuated gap. Our data show an offset of the nebulosity contours along the major axis, likely corresponding to a physical pericenter offset of the disk gap. This reinforces the leading theory that dynamical clearing by at least one orbiting body is the cause of the gap. Based on evolutionary models, our high-contrast imagery imposes an upper limit of 21 Jupiter masses on companions at separations outside of 0.1" and of 13 Jupiter masses outside of 0.2". Thus, we find that a planetary system around LkCa 15 is the most likely explanation for the disk architecture.

Integral Field Spectroscopy of a Candidate Disk Galaxy at z~1.5 using Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics

We present 0.1" resolution near-infrared integral field spectroscopy of Halpha in a z=1.4781 star forming galaxy, Q2343-BM133. These observations were obtained with OSIRIS (OH Suppressing Infra-Red Imaging Spectrograph) using the W.M. Keck Observatory Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics system. Halpha emission is resolved over a 0.8" (6.8 kpc) x 0.5" (4.3 kpc) region with a 0.1" spatial resolution. We find a global flux of 4.2+/-0.6x10^{-16} ergs s^{-1} cm^{-2}, and detect a spatially resolved velocity gradient of ~134 km s^{-1} across the galaxy and a global velocity dispersion of 73+/-9 km s^{-1}. An upper limit of NII/Halpha < 0.12 is inferred, which implies that this galaxy is not dominated by an active galactic nucleus and has a metallicity at or below 1/2 solar metallicity. We derive a star formation rate (SFR) of 47+/-6 Msun yr^{-1}, and a dereddened SFR of 66+/-9 Msun yr^{-1}. Two-dimensional kinematics for Q2343-BM133 fit well with an inclined-disk model, with which we estimate an enclosed mass of 4.3x10^{9} Msun within 5.5 kpc. A possible merger scenario is also presented, and can not be fully ruled out. We derive a virial mass of 1.1x10^{10} Msun for a disk geometry, using the observed velocity dispersion. We propose that Q2343-BM133 is currently at an early stage of disk formation at a look-back time of 9.3 Gyr.

Keck Imaging of Binary L Dwarfs

We present Keck near-infrared imaging of three binary L dwarf systems, all of which are likely to be sub-stellar. Two are lithium dwarfs, and a third exhibits an L7 spectral type, making it the coolest binary known to date. All have component flux ratios near 1 and projected physical separations between 5 and 10 AU, assuming distances of 18 to 26 pc from recent measurements of trigonometric parallax. These surprisingly similar binaries represent the sole detections of companions in ten L dwarf systems which were analyzed in the preliminary phase of a much larger dual-epoch imaging survey. The detection rate prompts us to speculate that binary companions to L dwarfs are common, that similar-mass systems predominate, and that their distribution peaks at radial distances in accord both with M dwarf binaries and with the radial location of Jovian planets in our own solar system. To fully establish these conjectures against doubts raised by biases inherent in this small preliminary survey, however, will require quantitative analysis of a larger volume-limited sample which has been observed with high resolution and dynamic range.
