Use of Power Flow Controllers to Enhance Transmission Network Utilisation on the Irish Transmission Network

The Ireland and Northern Ireland power system is in a period of rapid transition from conventional generation to renewable generation and has seen a rapid increase in large demand sites requiring connection into the backbone transmission system. The role of EirGrid and SONI as Transmission System Operator in Ireland and Northern Ireland is to operate, maintain and develop the electricity transmission network. EirGrid ensures that new transmission projects are developed in a way that balances technical, economic, community and other stakeholder considerations. This has resulted in much more detailed evaluation of planning options to maximize utilisation of the existing network which may include but are not limited to uprating the capacity of the existing transmission system mainly through the thermal or voltage uprate of existing circuits. Another method to increase network utilisation is to strategically deploy Power Flow Control devices to relieve system overloads and maximise network transfer capacities. EirGrid has developed a new grid development strategy that places particular emphasis on identifying technologies to help resolve network issues. This paper presents the study findings for the application of a power flow controller (PFC) to relieve system issues.

Image Forensics: Detecting duplication of scientific images with manipulation-invariant image similarity

Manipulation and re-use of images in scientific publications is a concerning problem that currently lacks a scalable solution. Current tools for detecting image duplication are mostly manual or semi-automated, despite the availability of an overwhelming target dataset for a learning-based approach. This paper addresses the problem of determining if, given two images, one is a manipulated version of the other by means of copy, rotation, translation, scale, perspective transform, histogram adjustment, or partial erasing. We propose a data-driven solution based on a 3-branch Siamese Convolutional Neural Network. The ConvNet model is trained to map images into a 128-dimensional space, where the Euclidean distance between duplicate images is smaller than or equal to 1, and the distance between unique images is greater than 1. Our results suggest that such an approach has the potential to improve surveillance of the published and in-peer-review literature for image manipulation.

MARS-MD: rejection based image domain material decomposition

This paper outlines image domain material decomposition algorithms that have been routinely used in MARS spectral CT systems. These algorithms (known collectively as MARS-MD) are based on a pragmatic heuristic for solving the under-determined problem where there are more materials than energy bins. This heuristic contains three parts: (1) splitting the problem into a number of possible sub-problems, each containing fewer materials; (2) solving each sub-problem; and (3) applying rejection criteria to eliminate all but one sub-problem's solution. An advantage of this process is that different constraints can be applied to each sub-problem if necessary. In addition, the result of this process is that solutions will be sparse in the material domain, which reduces crossover of signal between material images. Two algorithms based on this process are presented: the Segmentation variant, which uses segmented material classes to define each sub-problem; and the Angular Rejection variant, which defines the rejection criteria using the angle between reconstructed attenuation vectors.

Ring-Pattern Dynamics in Smectic-C* and Smectic-C_A* Freely Suspended Liquid Crystal Films

Ring patterns of concentric 2pi-solitons in molecular orientation, form in freely suspended chiral smectic-C films in response to an in-plane rotating electric field. We present measurements of the zero-field relaxation of ring patterns and of the driven dynamics of ring formation under conditions of synchronous winding, and a simple model which enables their quantitative description in low polarization DOBAMBC. In smectic C_A* TFMHPOBC we observe an odd-even layer number effect, with odd number layer films exhibiting order of magnitude slower relaxation rates than even layer films. We show that this rate difference is due to much larger spontaneous polarization in odd number layer films.
