Mega-Gauss Plasma Jet Creation Using a Ring of Laser Beams

Using 20 OMEGA laser beams at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, University of Rochester, to irradiate a flat plastic target in a hollow ring configuration, we created supersonic cylindrical stable plasma jets with self-generated megagauss magnetic fields extending out to > 4 mm. These well-collimated magnetized jets possess a number of distinct and novel properties that will allow us to study the dynamics, physical processes and scaling properties of astrophysical jets not feasible with other laboratory settings. The dimensionless parameters of these laboratory jets fall in the same regime as those of YSO jets. They will also provide new versatile laser-based platforms to study magnetized shocks, shear flows and other plasma processes under controllable conditions.

Ion-motion-driven enhancement of energy coupling and stability in relativistic laser-microchannel interaction

For sufficiently short relativistic-intensity laser pulses, the disparity in time scales for electron and ion motion causes ions to behave as a fixed, neutralizing background. As the pulse duration or intensity is increased, ion motion becomes important, leading to instability in uniform plasmas but more complex, and potentially desirable behavior in structured targets. In this work, we introduce a new self-organized regime in laser-driven microchannels wherein ion motion facilitates stronger peak fields and high charge and photon conversion efficiency. 3-D particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate that the qualitative laser-microchannel interaction regime is governed by similarity parameters relating the pulse duration, spot size, and intensity to channel scales. The observed similarity suggests that lower-intensity experiments can inform designs for next-generation facilities, where the high-field, highly-radiative properties of the self-organized regime are especially desirable.

Data-Driven Key Performance Indicators and Datasets for Building Energy Flexibility: A Review and Perspectives

Energy flexibility, through short-term demand-side management (DSM) and energy storage technologies, is now seen as a major key to balancing the fluctuating supply in different energy grids with the energy demand of buildings. This is especially important when considering the intermittent nature of ever-growing renewable energy production, as well as the increasing dynamics of electricity demand in buildings. This paper provides a holistic review of (1) data-driven energy flexibility key performance indicators (KPIs) for buildings in the operational phase and (2) open datasets that can be used for testing energy flexibility KPIs. The review identifies a total of 81 data-driven KPIs from 91 recent publications. These KPIs were categorized and analyzed according to their type, complexity, scope, key stakeholders, data requirement, baseline requirement, resolution, and popularity. Moreover, 330 building datasets were collected and evaluated. Of those, 16 were deemed adequate to feature building performing demand response or building-to-grid (B2G) services. The DSM strategy, building scope, grid type, control strategy, needed data features, and usability of these selected 16 datasets were analyzed. This review reveals future opportunities to address limitations in the existing literature: (1) developing new data-driven methodologies to specifically evaluate different energy flexibility strategies and B2G services of existing buildings; (2) developing baseline-free KPIs that could be calculated from easily accessible building sensors and meter data; (3) devoting non-engineering efforts to promote building energy flexibility, such as designing utility programs, standardizing energy flexibility quantification and verification processes; and (4) curating datasets with proper description for energy flexibility assessments.

Numerical Simulation of magnetized jet creation using a hollow ring of laser beams

Three dimensional FLASH magneto-hydrodynamics(MHD) modeling is carried out to interpret the OMEGA laser experiments of strongly magnetized, highly collimated jets driven by a ring of 20 OMEGA beams. The predicted optical Thomson scattering spectra and proton images are in good agreement with a subset of the experimental data. Magnetic fields generated via the Biermann battery term are amplified at the boundary between the core and the surrounding of the jet. The simulation predicts multiple axially aligned magnetic flux ropes with alternating poloidal component. Future applications of the hollow ring configuration in laboratory astrophysics are discussed.

Strong Pinning Enhancement in MgB2 Using Very Small Dy2O3 Additions

0.5 to 5.0 wt.% Dy2O3 was in-situ reacted with Mg + B to form pinned MgB2. While Tc remained largely unchanged, Jc was strongly enhanced. The best sample (only 0.5 wt.% Dy2O3) had a Jc of 6.5 x 10^5 A/cm^2 at 6K, 1T and 3.5 x 10^5 A/cm^2 at 20K, 1T, around a factor of 4 higher compared to the pure sample, and equivalent to hot-pressed or nano-Si added MgB2 at below 1T. Even distributions of nano-scale precipitates of DyB4 and MgO were observed within the grains. The room temperature resistivity decreased with Dy2O3 indicative of improved grain connectivity.

Improved Current Densities in MgB2 By Liquid-Assisted Sintering

Polycrystalline MgB2 samples with GaN additions were prepared by reaction of Mg, B, and GaN powders. The presence of Ga leads to a low melting eutectic phase which allowed liquid phase sintering and produces plate-like grains. For low-level GaN additions (5% at. % or less), the critical transition temperature, Tc, remained unchanged and in 1T magnetic field, the critical current density, Jc was enhanced by a factor of 2 and 10, for temperatures of \~5K and 20K, respectively. The values obtained are approaching those of hot isostatically pressed samples.
