Formation and relaxation of RbHe exciplexes on He nanodroplets studied by femtosecond pump and picosecond probe spectroscopy

Vibrationally resolved photoionization spectra of RbHe exciplexes forming on He nanodroplets are recorded using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy with amplitude-shaped probe pulses. The time-evolution of the spectra reveals an exciplex formation time ~10ps followed by vibrational relaxation extending up to >1ns. This points to an indirect, time-delayed desorption process of RbHe off the He surface.

How can a 22-pole ion trap exhibit 10 local minima in the effective potential?

The column density distribution of trapped OH$^-$ ions in a 22-pole ion trap is measured for different trap parameters. The density is obtained from position-dependent photodetachment rate measurements. Overall, agreement is found with the effective potential of an ideal 22-pole. However, in addition we observe 10 distinct minima in the trapping potential, which indicate a breaking of the 22-fold symmetry. Numerical simulations show that a displacement of a subset of the radiofrequency electrodes can serve as an explanation for this symmetry breaking.

Quantum dynamics of bosons in a double-well potential: Josephson oscillations, self-trapping and ultralong tunneling times

The dynamics of the population imbalance of bosons in a double-well potential is investigated from the point of view of many-body quantum mechanics in the framework of the two-mode model. For small initial population imbalances, coherent superpositions of almost equally spaced energy eigenstates lead to Josephson oscillations. The suppression of tunneling at population imbalance beyond a critical value is related to a high concentration of initial state population in the region of the energy spectrum with quasi-degenerate doublets resulting in imbalance oscillations with a very small amplitude. For unaccessible long times, however, the system recovers the regime of Josephson oscillations.

Sympathetic Cooling of Lithium by Laser-cooled Cesium

We present first indications of sympathetic cooling between two neutral, optically trapped atomic species. Lithium and cesium atoms are simultaneously stored in an optical dipole trap formed by the focus of a CO$_2$ laser, and allowed to interact for a given period of time. The temperature of the lithium gas is found to decrease when in thermal contact with cold cesium. The timescale of thermalization yields an estimate for the Li-Cs cross-section.

Resonator-Enhanced Optical Dipole Trap for Fermionic Lithium Atoms

We demonstrate a novel optical dipole trap which is based on the enhancement of the optical power density of a Nd:YAG laser beam in a resonator. The trap is particularly suited for experiments with ultracold gases, as it combines a potential depth of order 1 mK with storage times of several tens of seconds. We study the interactions in a gas of fermionic lithium atoms in our trap and observe the influence of spin-changing collisions and off-resonant photon scattering. A key element in reaching long storage times is an ultra-low noise laser. The dependence of the storage time on laser noise is investigated.

Very long storage times and evaporative cooling of cesium atoms in a quasi-electrostatic dipole trap

We have trapped cesium atoms over many minutes in the focus of a CO$_2$-laser beam employing an extremely simple laser system. Collisional properties of the unpolarized atoms in their electronic ground state are investigated. Inelastic binary collisions changing the hyperfine state lead to trap loss which is quantitatively analyzed. Elastic collisions result in evaporative cooling of the trapped gas from 25 $μ$K to 10 $μ$K over a time scale of about 150 s.
