Photon - Jet Correlations and Constraints on Fragmentation Functions

We study the production of a large-pT photon in association with a jet in proton-proton collisions. We examine the sensitivity of the jet rapidity distribution to the gluon distribution function in the proton. We then assess the sensitivity of various photon + jet correlation observables to the photon fragmentation functions. We argue that RHIC data on photon-jet correlations can be used to constrain the photon fragmentation functions in a region which was barely accessible in LEP experiments.

Parton fragmentation in the vacuum and in the medium

We present the mini-proceedings of the workshop on ``Parton fragmentation in the vacuum and in the medium'' held at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*, Trento) in February 2008. The workshop gathered both theorists and experimentalists to discuss the current status of investigations of quark and gluon fragmentation into hadrons at different accelerator facilities (LEP, B-factories, JLab, HERA, RHIC, and Tevatron) as well as preparations for extension of these studies at the LHC. The main physics topics covered were: (i) light-quark and gluon fragmentation in the vacuum including theoretical (global fits analyses and MLLA) and experimental (data from e+e-, p-p, e-p collisions) aspects, (ii) strange and heavy-quark fragmentation, (iii) parton fragmentation in cold QCD matter (nuclear DIS), and (iv) medium-modified fragmentation in hot and dense QCD matter (high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions). These mini-proceedings consist of an introduction and short summaries of the talks presented at the meeting.

Photon Physics in Heavy Ion Collisions at the LHC

Various pion and photon production mechanisms in high-energy nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC are discussed. Comparison with RHIC data is done whenever possible. The prospect of using electromagnetic probes to characterize quark-gluon plasma formation is assessed.

A next-to-leading order study of photon-pion and pion pair hadro-production in the light of the Higgs boson search at the LHC

We discuss the production of photon-pion and pion pairs with a large invariant mass at collider energies. We present a study based on a perturbative QCD calculation at full next-to-leading order accuracy, implemented in the computer programme DIPHOX. We give estimations for various observables, which concern the reducible background to the Higgs boson search in the channel H --> gamma gamma, in the mass range 80-140 GeV at the LHC. We critically discuss the reliability of these estimates due to our imperfect knowledge of fragmentation functions at high z and a subtle interplay between higher order corrections and realistic experimental cuts. We conclude that, whereas the invariant mass spectrum of photon-pion pairs is theoretically better under control, in the dipion case large uncertainties remain.

A next-to-leading order study of pion-pair production and comparison with E706 data

We discuss the production of pion pairs with a large invariant mass in hadronic collisions. We present a study based on a perturbative QCD calculation at full next-to-leading order accuracy, implemented in the computer programme DIPHOX. We provide a comparison of various predictions with the corresponding observables measured by the E706 fixed target experiment. Discrepancies between data and next-to-leading order calculation are carefully analysed. We classify the theoretical next-to-leading order distributions with respect to their infra-red sensitivity, and explain which distributions need improvements. Further, we comment on the energy scale dependences of non pertubative effects.

Beyond leading order effects in photon pair production at the Tevatron

We discuss effects induced by beyond leading order contributions to photon pair production. We point out that next to leading order contributions to the fragmentation component of the signal lead to a change in the shape of distributions. This is already mildly visible in present Tevatron data though stringent isolation criteria tend to suppress the fragmentation component considerably. We expect the effect to be experimentally confirmed in future data samples with higher statistics which would serve as a precision test for QCD.

Next-To-Leading Order Determination of Fragmentation Functions

We analyse LEP and PETRA data on single inclusive charged hadron cross-sections to establish new sets of Next-to-Leading order Fragmentation Functions. Data on hadro-production of large-$p_{\bot}$ hadrons are also used to constrain the gluon Fragmentation Function. We carry out a critical comparison with other NLO parametrizations.

The QCD and Standard Model Working Group: Summary Report from Les Houches

The Les Houches Workshop on Physics at TeV Colliders took place from June 8-18, 1999. One of the three working groups at Les Houches concentrated on QCD issues, both at the Tevatron Collider and at the LHC. Besides the interest in QCD in its own right, QCD dynamics plays an important role in the production mechanisms for any new physics process that might be observed at either collider, as well as any processes that may form backgrounds to the new physics. This writeup serves both as a pedagogical overview of QCD as well as an update on the current status of the field.

QCD

We discuss issues of QCD at the LHC including parton distributions, Monte Carlo event generators, the available next-to-leading order calculations, resummation, photon production, small x physics, double parton scattering, and backgrounds to Higgs production.

A full Next to Leading Order study of direct photon pair production in hadronic collisions

We discuss the production of photon pairs in hadronic collisions, from fixed target to LHC energies. The study which follows is based on a QCD calculation at full next-to-leading order accuracy, including single and double fragmentation contributions, and implemented in the form of a general purpose computer program of "partonic event generator" type. To illustrate the possibilities of this code, we present the comparison with observables measured by the WA70 and D0 collaborations, and some predictions for the irreducible background to the search of Higgs bosons at LHC in the channel $h \to γγ$. We also discuss theoretical scale uncertainties for these predictions, and examine several infrared sensitive situations which deserve further study.

Large-p_T Inclusive pi^0 Cross Sections and Next-to-Leading-Order QCD Predictions

We review the phenomenology of pi^0 production at large transverse momentum in proton-induced collisions. Uncertainties in the next-to-leading-order predictions of Quantum Chromodynamics are discussed. The comparison with data reveals that the disagreement between theory and experiment lies essentially in an overall normalization factor. The situation for pi^0 production is contrasted with that of prompt-photon production in hadronic collisions.

Inclusive Photon Production in Hadronic Collisions

High statistics fixed target and ISR inclusive photon production data are compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations. The dependence of the theoretical predictions on the structure functions, and on the theoretical scales is investigated. It is shown that the data cannot be simultaneously fitted with a single set of structure functions and scales. However, it is argued that as long as one restricts the data/theory comparison to the xT range where the theory is reliable, i.e. stable with respect to the scale variation, there is no need to introduce an additional primordial kT dependence except for Be data. Finally a precise determination of the strong coupling constant, alpha_s, is performed from the direct photon production cross sections obtained in high statistics pbar p and pp collisions at the CERN SPS (UA6) by a NLO QCD analysis.

A critical phenomenological study of inclusive photon production in hadronic collisions

We discuss fixed target and ISR inclusive photon production and attempt a comparison between theory and experiments. The dependence of the theoretical predictions on the structure functions, and on the renormalization and factorization scales is investigated. The main result of this study is that the data cannot be simultaneously fitted with a single set of scales and structure functions. On the other hand, there is no need for an additional intrinsic $k_{_T}$ to force the agreement between QCD predictions and experiments, with the possible exception of one data set. Since the data cover almost overlapping kinematical ranges this raises the question of consistency among data sets. A comparative discussion of some possible sources of experimental uncertainties is sketched.

Next to leading order determination of pion fragmentation functions

We perform a complete next to leading order evaluation of inclusive neutral pion production from hadronic colliders which is based on the knowledge of the pion fragmentation functions at next to leading order. This problem has been tackled for the first time using different approaches. Predictions at LHC are given with the estimate of the theoretical uncertainty.
