Collective excitations and tunneling dynamics in long bosonic Josephson junctions

We investigate the low-energy dynamics of two coupled anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates forming a long Josephson junction. The theoretical study is performed in the framework of the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. We analyze the excitation spectrum of the coupled Bose condensates and show how low-energy excitations of the condensates lead to multiple-frequency oscillations of the atomic populations in the two wells. This analysis generalizes the standard bosnic Josephson euqation approach. We also develop a one-dimensional hydrodynamic model of the coupled condensates, that is capable to reproduce the excitation spectrum and population dynamics of the system.

Finite-temperature dynamics of a bosonic Josephson junction

In the framework of the stochastic projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation we investigate finite-temperature dynamics of a bosonic Josephson junction (BJJ) formed by a Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms in a two-well trapping potential. We extract the characteristic properties of the BJJ from the stationary finite-temperature solutions and compare the dynamics of the system with the resistively shunted Josephson model. Analyzing the decay dynamics of the relative population imbalance we estimate the effective normal conductance of the junction induced by thermal atoms. The calculated normal conductance at various temperatures is then compared with predictions of the noise-less model and the model of ballistic transport of thermal atoms.

Phonon-Josephson resonances in atomtronic circuits

We study the resonant excitation of sound modes from Josephson oscillations in Bose-Einstein condensates. From the simulations for various setups using the Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field equations and Josephson equations we observe additional tunneling currents induced by resonant phonons. The proposed experiment may be used for spectroscopy of phonons as well as other low-energy collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates. We also argue that the observed effect may mask the observation of Shapiro resonances if not carefully controlled.

Stable Hopf solitons in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We reveal that Hopf solitons can be stabilized in rotating atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The Hopfion is a matter-wave vortex complex which carries two independent winding numbers. Such a topological solitonic structure results from a superfluid flow of atoms simultaneously quantized in poloidal and toroidal directions. In the framework of a dissipative mean-field model we observe different unstable evolution scenarios of the Hopfions. We demonstrate energetic and dynamical stability of the Hopf solitons under experimentally feasible conditions.

Phase diagram of one-, two-, and three-dimensional quantum spin systems derived from entanglement properties

We study the bipartite entanglement per bond to determine characteristic features of the phase diagram of various quantum spin models in different spatial dimensions. The bipartite entanglement is obtained from a tensor network representation of the ground state wave-function. Three spin-1/2 models (Ising, XY, XXZ, all in a transverse field) are investigated. Imaginary-time evolution (TEBD in 1D, `simple update' in 2D and 3D) is used to determine the ground states of these models. The phase structure of the models is discussed for all three dimensions.

Numerical studies of entanglement properties in one- and two-dimensional quantum Ising and XXZ models

We investigate entanglement properties of infinite 1D and 2D spin-1/2 quantum Ising and XXZ models. Tensor network methods (MPS in 1D and TERG and CTMRG in 2D) are used to model the ground state of the studied models. Different entanglement measures, such as one-site entanglement entropy, one-tangle, concurrence of formation and assistance, negativity and entanglement per bond are calculated and their `characterizing power' to determine quantum phase transitions is compared. A special emphasis is made on the study of entanglement monogamy properties.

Generation and decay of persistent current in a toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate

Persistent current, or "flow without friction", as well as quantum vortices are the hallmarks of superfluidity. Recently a very long-lived persistent flow of atoms has been experimentally observed in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a ring-shaped potential. This enables fundamental studies of superfluidity and may lead to applications in high-precision metrology and atomtronics. We overview our recent theoretical studies of the generation of the persistent current in a stirred toroidal atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, and discuss our new investigation of the hysteresis in the atomtronic circuit.

Vortices in a toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate with a rotating weak link

Motivated by a recent experiment [K.C. Wright et. al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 025302 (2013)], we investigate deterministic discontinuous jumps between quantized circulation states in a toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. These phase slips are induced by vortex excitations created by a rotating weak link. We analyze influence of a localized condensate density depletion and atomic superflows, governed by the rotating barrier, on the energetic and dynamical stability of the vortices in the ring-shaped condensate. We simulate in a three-dimensional dissipative mean field model the dynamics of the condensate using parameters similar to the experimental conditions. Moreover, we consider the dynamics of the stirred condensate far beyond the experimentally explored region and reveal surprising manifestations of complex vortex dynamics.

Stability of persistent currents in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Motivated by a recent experiment [S. Beattie, S. Moulder, R. J. Fletcher, and Z. Hadzibabic, PRL 110, 025301 (2013)] we study the superflow of atomic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates optically trapped in a ring-shaped geometry. Within a dissipative mean-field approach we simulate a two-component condensate in conditions adapted to the experiment. In qualitative agreement with the experimental findings, we observe persistent currents, if the spin-population imbalance is above some well-defined `critical' value. The triply charged vortices decay in quantized steps. The vortex lines escape from the center of the ring through dynamically created regions in the condensate annulus with reduced density of one component filled by atoms of the other component. The vortices then leave the ring-shaped high density region of the condensate and finally decay into elementary excitations.

Stable bright solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Two-dimensional (2D) fundamental soliton-soliton pairs are investigated in binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions between atoms of the same type. Both attractive and repulsive interactions between atoms of different type are considered. The general properties of the stationary states are investigated variationally and numerically, and the stability regions of the soliton-soliton pairs are determined.

The large system asymptotics of persistent currents in mesoscopic quantum rings

We consider a one-dimensional mesoscopic quantum ring filled with spinless electrons and threaded by a magnetic flux, which carries a persistent current at zero temperature. The interplay of Coulomb interactions and a single on-site impurity yields a non-trivial dependence of the persistent current on the size of the ring. We determine numerically the asymptotic power law for systems up to 32000 sites for various impurity strengths and compare with predictions from Bethe Ansatz solutions combined with Bosonization. The numerical results are obtained using an improved functional renormalization group (fRG) method. We apply the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and exact diagonalization methods to benchmark the fRG calculations. We use DMRG to study the persistent current at low electron concentrations in order to extend the validity of our results to quasi-continuous systems. We briefly comment on the quality of calculated fRG ground state energies by comparison with exact DMRG data.

Fractional minima in the conductivity of the quantum-Hall-system under microwaves

We analyse theoretically the conductivity of a quantum Hall system exposed to microwave radiation. We find that whenever microwave frequency and cyclotron frequency are commensurate, there is a {\em resonance} in the longitudinal conductivity. This resonance has the form of the derivative of a Lorentz function; precisely at the center of the resonance, the microwave induced conductivity vanishes. Between the resonances there are maxima and minima, the depths and precise positions of which depend on the microwave amplitude and the scattering rate of the impurities. We demonstrate the existence of these resonances by a microscopic, analytical calculation of the conductivity in lowest order in the microwave intensity and show here that the conductivity is independent of the microwave polarization, linear or circular. We then discuss the general case and predict minima in the longitudinal conductivity corresponding to fractional values of the microwave frequency divided by the cyclotron frequency.

Comment on `Exact analytical solution for the generalized Lyapunov exponent of the two-dimensional Anderson localization'

In a recent publication, J. Phys.: Condens. Matt. 14 13777 (2002), Kuzovkov et. al. announced an analytical solution of the two-dimensional Anderson localisation problem via the calculation of a generalised Lyapunov exponent using signal theory. Surprisingly, for certain energies and small disorder strength they observed delocalised states. We study the transmission properties of the same model using well-known transfer matrix methods. Our results disagree with the findings obtained using signal theory. We point to the possible origin of this discrepancy and comment on the general strategy to use a generalised Lyapunov exponent for studying Anderson localisation.

Theoretical study of the dynamic structure factor of superfluid 4He

We study the dynamic structure factor $S(\vec{q},ω)$ of superfluid 4He at zero temperature in the roton momentum region and beyond using field-theoretical Green's function techniques. We start from the Gavoret-Nozières two-particle propagator and introduce the concept of quasiparticles. We treat the residual (weak) interaction between quasiparticles as being local in coordinate space and weakly energy dependent. Our quasiparticle model explicitly incorporates the Bose-Einstein condensate. A complete formula for the dynamic susceptibility, which is related to $S (\vec{q},ω)$, is derived. The structure factor is numerically calculated in a self-consistent way in the special case of a momentum independent interaction between quasiparticles. Results are compared with experiment and other theoretical approaches.
