Gravitino Overproduction through Moduli Decay

We derive cosmological constraints on the masses of generic scalar fields which decay only through gravitationally suppressed interactions into unstable gravitinos and ordinary particles in the supersymmetric standard model. For the gravitino mass 100GeV-1TeV, the scalar masses should be larger than 100TeV to keep the success of big-bang nucleosynthesis if no late-time entropy production dilutes the gravitino density.

Axion Cosmology with its Scalar Superpartner

In supersymmetric theories, the Peccei-Quinn symmetry has a complex extension as a symmetry of the superpotential, so that the scalar potential always has an almost flat direction, the dilaton. We discuss how coherent oscillation of the dilaton affects axion cosmology. We stress that the dilaton decay, if its dominant mode is not into axions, releases large entropy at a late epoch of the Universe's evolution to dilute axion energy density and the upperbound of the decay constant is raised up to about $10^{15}$ GeV. The case of the M-theory axion is also discussed.

Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectra of the effective d-wave model for cuprate superconductivity

An exact-diagonalization technique on finite-size clusters is used to study the ground state and excitation spectra of the two-dimensional effective fermion model, a fictious model of hole quasiparticles derived from numerical studies of the two-dimensional t-J model at low doping. We show that there is actually a reasonable range of parameter values where the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing of holes occurs and the low-lying excitation can be described by the picture of Bogoliubov quasiparticles in the BCS pairing theory. The gap parameter of a size $Δ_d\simeq 0.13|V|$ (where $V$ is the attractive interaction between holes) is estimated at low doping levels. The paired state gives way to the state of clustering of holes for some stronger attractions.

Supersymmetry Breaking and Soft Terms in M-Theory

We investigate gaugino condensation in the framework of the strongly coupled heterotic $E_8 \times E_8$ string (M--theory). Supersymmetry is broken in a hidden sector and gravitational interactions induce soft breaking parameters in the observable sector. The resulting soft masses are of order of the gravitino mass. The situation is similar to that in the weakly coupled $E_8 \times E_8$ theory with one important difference: we avoid the problem of small gaugino masses which are now comparable to the gravitino mass.

Exact Event Rates of Lepton Flavor Violating Processes in Supersymmetric SU(5) Model

Event rates of various lepton flavor violating processes in the minimal supersymmetric SU(5) model are calculated, using exact formulas which include Yukawa vertices of lepton-slepton-Higgsino. We find subtlety in evaluating event rates due to partial cancellation between diagrams. This cancellation typically reduces the event rates significantly, and the size of the reduction strongly depends on superparticle mass spectrum.

Geometric Bremsstrahlung in the Early Universe

We discuss photon emission from particles decelerlated by the cosmic expansion. This can be interpretated as a kind of bremsstrahlung induced by the Universe geometry. In the high momentum limit its transition probability does not depend on detailed behavior of the expansion.

Particle Production and Gravitino Abundance after Inflation

Thermal history after inflation is studied in a chaotic inflation model with supersymmetric couplings of the inflaton to matter fields. Time evolution equation is solved in a formalism that incorporates both the back reaction of particle production and the cosmological expansion. The effect of the parametric resonance gives rise to a rapid initial phase of the inflaton decay followed by a slow stage of the Born term decay. Thermalization takes place immediately after the first explosive stage for a medium strength of the coupling among created particles. As an application we calculate time evolution of the gravitino abundance that is produced by ordinary particles directly created from the inflaton decay, which typically results in much more enhanced yield than what a naive estimate based on the Born term would suggest.

Lepton-Flavor Violation via Right-Handed Neutrino Yukawa Couplings in Supersymmetric Standard Model

Various lepton-flavor violating (LFV) processes in the supersymmetric standard model with right-handed neutrino supermultiplets are investigated in detail. It is shown that large LFV rates are obtained when $\tan β$ is large. In the case where the mixing matrix in the lepton sector has a similar structure as the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and the third-generation Yukawa coupling is as large as that of the top quark, the branching ratios can be as large as $Br(μ\rightarrow eγ)\simeq 10^{-11}$ and $Br(τ\rightarrowμγ)\simeq 10^{-7}$, which are within the reach of future experiments. If we assume a large mixing angle solution to the atmospheric neutrino problem, rate for the process $τ\rightarrowμγ$ becomes larger. We also discuss the difference between our case and the case of the minimal $SU(5)$ grand unified theory.

Particle Production and Dissipative Cosmic Field

Large amplitude oscillation of cosmic field that may occur right after inflation and in the decay process of weakly interacting fields gives rise to violent particle production via the parametric resonance. In the large amplitude limit the problem of back reaction against the field oscillation is solved and the energy spectrum of created particles is determined in a semi-classical approximation. For large enough coupling or large enough amplitude the resulting energy spectrum is broadly distributed, implying larger production of high energy particles than what a simple estimate of the reheating temperature due to the Born formula would suggest.

On the Solution to the Polonyi Problem with $O$(10~TeV) Gravitino Mass in Supergravity

We study the solution to the Polonyi problem where the Polonyi field weighs as $O(10{\rm TeV})$ and decays just before the primordial nucleosynthesis. It is shown that in spite of a large entropy production by the Polonyi field decay, one can naturally explain the present value of the baryon-to-entropy ratio, $n_B/s \sim (10^{-10}-10^{-11})$ if the Affleck-Dine mechanism for baryogenesis works. It is pointed out, however, that there is another cosmological problem related to the abundance of the lightest superparticles produced by the Polonyi decay.
