Double-gated graphene-based devices

We discuss transport through double gated single and few layer graphene devices. This kind of device configuration has been used to investigate the modulation of the energy band structure through the application of an external perpendicular electric field, a unique property of few layer graphene systems. Here we discuss technological details that are important for the fabrication of top gated structures, based on electron-gun evaporation of SiO$_2$. We perform a statistical study that demonstrates how --contrary to expectations-- the breakdown field of electron-gun evaporated thin SiO$_2$ films is comparable to that of thermally grown oxide layers. We find that a high breakdown field can be achieved in evaporated SiO$_2$ only if the oxide deposition is directly followed by the metallization of the top electrodes, without exposure to air of the SiO$_2$ layer.

Contact resistance in graphene-based devices

We report a systematic study of the contact resistance present at the interface between a metal (Ti) and graphene layers of different, known thickness. By comparing devices fabricated on 11 graphene flakes we demonstrate that the contact resistance is quantitatively the same for single-, bi-, and tri-layer graphene ($\sim800 \pm 200 Ωμm$), and is in all cases independent of gate voltage and temperature. We argue that the observed behavior is due to charge transfer from the metal, causing the Fermi level in the graphene region under the contacts to shift far away from the charge neutrality point.

Noise Correlations in a Coulomb Blockaded Quantum Dot

We report measurements of current noise auto- and cross-correlation in a tunable quantum dot with two or three leads. As the Coulomb blockade is lifted at finite source-drain bias, the auto-correlation evolves from super-Poissonian to sub-Poissonian in the two-lead case, and the cross-correlation evolves from positive to negative in the three-lead case, consistent with transport through multiple levels. Cross-correlations in the three-lead dot are found to be proportional to the noise in excess of the Poissonian value in the limit of weak output tunneling.

Photoproduction of $η$-mesons off C and Cu nuclei for photon energies below 1.1 GeV

The $η$-meson photoproduction cross sections have been measured on the C and Cu targets for the photon energies between 600 and 1100 MeV to investigate the behavior of the $S_{11}$(1535) resonance in a nucleus. The excitation functions of the cross section as well as the angular and momentum distributions of $η$-mesons are in quantitative agreement with the Quantum Molecular Dynamics (QMD) model calculations in which the $η$-meson emission processes other than the $S_{11}$(1535) resonance are also incorporated as proposed in the $η$-MAID model. It is shown that the excitation of the $D_{15}$(1675) resonance might play an important role for $E_γ>900$ MeV.

Spin polarization in a T-shape conductor induced by strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We investigate numerically the spin polarization of the current in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction in a T-shaped conductor proposed by A.A. Kiselev and K.W. Kim (Appl. Phys. Lett. {\bf 78} 775 (2001)). The recursive Green function method is used to calculate the three terminal spin dependent transmission probabilities. We focus on single-channel transport and show that the spin polarization becomes nearly 100 % with a conductance close to $e^{2}/h$ for sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling. This is interpreted by the fact that electrons with opposite spin states are deflected into an opposite terminal by the spin dependent Lorentz force. The influence of the disorder on the predicted effect is also discussed. Cases for multi-channel transport are studied in connection with experiments.

Conductance fluctuations in the presence of spin scattering

Electron transport through disordered systems that include spin scatterers is studied numerically. We consider three kinds of magnetic impurities: the Ising, the XY and the Heisenberg. By extending the transfer matrix method to include the spin degree of freedom, the two terminal conductance is calculated. The variance of conductance is halved as the number of spin components of the magnetic impurities increases. Application of the Zeeman field in the lead causes a further halving of the variance under certain conditions.

Collision Drag Effect on Two-Fluid Hydrodynamics of Superfluid 3He in Aerogel

Sound propagation in superfluid $^3$He in aerogel is studied on the basis of a two-fluid model taking into account the effect by the drag force due to collisions between $^3$He-quasiparticles and aerogel molecules. The drag force plays a role of frictional force between the aerogel and the normal-fluid component. In local equilibrium, they move together in accordance with McKenna {\it et al.}'s model. The deviation from the local equilibrium leads to the damping of sound. We give explicit expressions for the attenuation of longitudinal sounds in this system. We also discuss the sound propagation in a superfluid ${}^3$He-aerogel system embedded in a narrow pore. It is shown that the forth sound propagates in such a system because of the clamping of the normal fluid by the aerogel.

Effects of magnetic field applied on leads

The two terminal conductance for two dimensional systems is calculated in the presence of the spin-orbit scattering. The level statistics of the transmission eigenvalue is shown to be sensitive to the asymmetry of the spin population in the lead. The nearest neighbor spacing is GUE instead of GSE when sufficiently large Zeeman splitting is assumed in one of the lead.

Spin-dependent electron transport through a ferromagnetic domain wall

We present a theoretical study of spin-dependent transport through a ferromagnetic domain wall. With an increase of the number of components of the exchange coupling, we have observed that the variance of the conductance becomes half. As the strength of the domain wall magnetization is increased, negative magnetoresistance is also observed.

Axion-Dilatonic Conformal Anomaly from Ads/CFT Correspondence

We discuss general multidimensional axion-dilatonic AdS gravity which may correspond to bosonic sector of Gibbons-Green-Perry (compactified) IIB supergravity with RR-scalar (axion). Using AdS/CFT correspondence the 4d conformal anomaly on axion-dilaton-gravitational background is found from SG side. It is shown that for IIB SG with axion such conformal anomaly coincides with the one obtained from QFT calculation in ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory conformally coupled with ${\cal N}=4$ conformal SG. Brief discussion on possibility to apply these results for gauged SGs is also presented.
