On the limits of coercivity in permanent magnets

The maximum coercivity that can be achieved for a given hard magnetic alloy is estimated by computing the energy barrier for the nucleation of a reversed domain in an idealized microstructure without any structural defects and without any soft magnetic secondary phases. For Sm$_{1-z}$Zr$_z$(Fe$_{1-y}$Co$_y$)$_{12-x}$Ti$_x$ based alloys, which are considered an alternative to Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B magnets with lower rare-earth content, the coercive field of a small magnetic cube is reduced to 60 percent of the anisotropy field at room temperature and to 50 percent of the anisotropy field at elevated temperature (473K). This decrease of the coercive field is caused by misorientation, demagnetizing fields and thermal fluctuations.

Conjugate gradient methods in micromagnetics

Conjugate gradient methods for energy minimization in micromagnetics are compared. When the step length in the line search is controlled, conjugate gradient techniques are a fast and reliable way to compute the hysteresis properties of permanent magnets. The method is applied to investigate demagnetizing effects in NdFe12 based permanent magnets. The reduction of the coercive field by demagnetizing effects is 1.4 T at 450 K.

Hard magnet coercivity

Based on a critical analysis of the experimental coercive properties, general considerations on the reversal mechanisms in RFeB magnets are recalled. By plotting together the experimental parameters obtained in various magnets, common features of the reversal processes are demonstrated. Modeling provides an almost quantitative description of coercivity in these materials and permits connecting the defect characteristic properties to reversal mechanisms.

Pinwheel VBS state and triplet excitations in the two-dimensional deformed kagome lattice

Determining ground states of correlated electron systems is fundamental to understanding novel phenomena in condensed matter physics. A difficulty, however, arises in a geometrically frustrated system in which the incompatibility between the global topology of an underlying lattice and local spin interactions gives rise to macroscopically degenerate ground states, potentially prompting the emergence of quantum spin states, such as resonating valence bond (RVB) and valence bond solid (VBS). Although theoretically proposed to exist in a kagome lattice -- one of the most highly frustrated lattices in two dimensions (2D) being comprised of corner-sharing triangles -- such quantum-fluctuation-induced states have not been observed experimentally. Here we report the first realization of the "pinwheel" VBS ground state in the S=1/2 deformed kagome lattice antiferromagnet Rb2Cu3SnF12. In this system, a lattice distortion breaks the translational symmetry of the ideal kagome lattice and stabilizes the VBS state.

Partial ferromagnetic ordering and indirect exchange interaction in spatially anisotropic kagome antiferromagnet Cs_2Cu_3CeF_{12}

We report the crystal structure and unconventional magnetic ordering of Cs_2Cu_3CeF_{12}, which is composed of buckled kagome lattice of Cu^{2+} ions. The exchange network in the buckled kagome lattice is fairly anisotropic, so that the present spin system can be divided into two subsystems: alternating Heisenberg chains with strong antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and dangling spins. Although the direct exchange interactions between neighboring spins were found to be all antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic magnetic ordering of the dangling spins was observed. Magnetization exhibits a plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization. These observations can be understood in terms of the indirect interaction between dangling spins mediated by the chain spin.

Magnetic susceptibilities in a family of S=1/2 Kagome antiferromagnet

Hexagonal antiferromagnets Cs$_2$Cu$_3$MF$_{12}$ (M = Zr, Hf and Sn) have uniform Kagome lattices of Cu$^{2+}$ with S = 1/2, whereas Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ has a 2a by 2a enlarged cell as compared with the uniform Kagome lattice. The crystal data of Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ synthesized first in the present work are reported. We performed magnetic susceptibility measurements on this family of Kagome antiferromagnet using single crystals. In the Cs$_2$Cu$_3$MF$_{12}$ systems, structural phase transitions were observed at $T_t = 225$ K, 172 K and 185 K for M = Zr, Hf and Sn, respectively. The magnetic susceptibilities observed for $T > T_t$ are almost perfectly described using theoretical results obtained by exact diagonalization for the 24-site Kagome cluster with $J/k_B = 244$ K, 266 K and 240 K, respectively. Magnetic ordering accompanied by the weak ferromagnetic moment occurs at $T_N = 23.5$ K, 24.5 K and 20.0 K, respectively. The origins of the weak ferromagnetic moment should be ascribed to the lattice distortion that breaks the hexagonal symmetry of the exchange network for $T < T_t$ and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ is magnetically described as a modified Kagome antiferromagnet with four types of neighboring exchange interaction. Neither structural nor magnetic phase transition was observed in Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. Its magnetic ground state was found to be a spin singlet with a triplet gap. Using exact diagonalization for a 12-site Kagome cluster, we analyzed the magnetic susceptibility and evaluated individual exchange interactions. The causes leading to the different ground states in Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ are discussed.

New S=1/2 Kagome Antiferromagnets A$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$: A=Cs and Rb

We synthesized single crystals of the new hexagonal compounds A$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ with A=Cs and Rb, and investigated their magnetic properties. These compounds are composed of Kagomé layers of corner-sharing CuF$_6$-octahedra. Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ has the proper Kagomé layer at room temperature, and undergoes structural phase transition at $T_\mathrm{t}\simeq 185$ K. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility in Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ agrees well with the result of the numerical calculation for $S=1/2$ two-dimensional Heisenberg Kagomé antiferromagnet down to $T_\mathrm{t}$ with the nearest exchange interaction $J/k_\mathrm{B}\simeq 240$ K. Although the magnetic susceptibility deviates from the calculated result below $T<T_\mathrm{t}$, the rounded maxima were observed at approximately $T\simeq (1/6)J/k_\mathrm{B}$ as predicted by the theory. Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ undergoes three-dimensional magnetic ordering at $T_\mathrm{N} = 20$ K.

Singlet Ground State and Spin Gap in S=1/2 Kagome Antiferromagnet Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$

We investigated the crystal structure of Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and its magnetic properties using single crystals. This compound is composed of Kagome layers of corner-sharing CuF$_{6}$ octahedra with a 2a x 2a enlarged cell as compared with the proper Kagome layer. Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ is magnetically described as an $S$=1/2 modified Kagome antiferromagnet with four kinds of neighboring exchange interaction. From magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements, it was found that the ground state is a disordered singlet with the spin gap, as predicted from a recent theory. Exact diagonalization for a 12-site Kagome cluster was performed to analyze the magnetic susceptibility, and individual exchange interactions were evaluated.

Electronic structures of CeRu$_2X_2$ ($X$ = Si, Ge) in the paramagnetic phase studied by soft X-ray ARPES and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Soft and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) has been performed for one of the heavy fermion system CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and a $4f$-localized ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ in the paramagnetic phase. The three-dimensional band structures and Fermi surface (FS) shapes of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ have been determined by soft X-ray $hν$-dependent angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The differences in the Fermi surface topology and the non-$4f$ electronic structures between CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ are qualitatively explained by the band-structure calculation for both $4f$ itinerant and localized models, respectively. The Ce valences in CeRu$_2X_2$ ($X$ = Si, Ge) at 20 K are quantitatively estimated by the single impurity Anderson model calculation, where the Ce 3d hard X-ray core-level PES and Ce 3d X-ray absorption spectra have shown stronger hybridization and signature for the partial $4f$ contribution to the conduction electrons in CeRu$_2$Si$_2$.

Three-Dimensional Bulk Electronic Structures of Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 Studied by Soft X-ray Angle-Resolved Photoemission

We report on experimental data of the three-dimensional bulk Fermi surfaces of the layered strongly correlated Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 system. The measurements have been performed by means of hn-depndent bulk-sensitive soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission technique. Our experimental data evinces the bulk Fermi surface topology at kz~0 to be qualitatively different from the one observed by surface-sensitive low-energy ARPES. Furthermore, stronger kz dispersion of the circle-like gamma Fermi surface sheet is observed compared with Sr2RuO4. Thus in the paramagnetic metal phase, Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 compound is found to have rather three-dimensional electronic structure.

Observation of three-dimensional bulk Fermi surfaces for a strongly correlated material by soft x-ray $hν$-dependent (700-860 eV) ARPES

Three-dimensional Fermi surfaces at a high temperature have been clarified for a strongly correlated Ce compound, ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ in the paramagnetic phase, by virtue of a soft x-ray $hν$-dependent (700-860 eV) ARPES. Although the observed Fermi surfaces as well as quasiparticle dispersions are partly explained by a band-structure calculation based on a localized $4f$ model, qualitative discrepancy in experiments, between our APRES in the paramagnetic phase and de Haas-van Alphen measurement in the ferromagnetic phase, is revealed. This suggests a fundamental change in the $4f$ contribution to the Fermi surfaces across the magnetic phase transition widely seen for Ce compounds.

Centrosymmetric PbTe/CdTe quantum dots coherently embedded by epitaxial precipitation

A concept for the fabrication of highly symmetric quantum dots that are coherently embedded in a single crystalline matrix is demonstrated. In this approach, the formation of the quantum dots is induced by a transformation of an epitaxial 2D quantum well into an array of isolated precipitates with dimensions of about 25 nm. The formation process is driven by the immiscibility of the constituent materials resulting from their different lattice structures. The investigated PbTe/CdTe heterosystem combines two different cubic lattices with almost identical lattice constants. Therefore, the precipitated quantum dots are almost strain free and near thermodynamic equilibrium they exhibit the shape of small-rhombo-cubo-octahedrons. The PbTe/CdTe quantum dots, grown on GaAs substrates, display intense room temperature luminescence at wavelength around 3.2 micrometer, which makes them auspicious for applications in mid-infrared photonic devices.
