A New Approach for Measuring the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment and Electric Dipole Moment

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $a_μ = (g-2)/2$, and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $d_μ$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $a_μ$ and $d_μ$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon $g-2$ experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1,000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $a_μ$ is statistical uncertainty of 450 part per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. The goal for EDM is a sensitivity of $1.5\times 10^{-21}~e\cdot\mbox{cm}$.

Field-enhanced quantum fuctuation in S=1/2 frustrated square lattice

We present a new model compound with the S = 1/2 frustrated square lattice composed of the charge-transfer salt (o-MePy-V)PF6. Ab initio calculations indicate the formation of an S = 1/2 square lattice, in which six types of nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic- and antiferromagnetic interactions cause frustration. By applying a magnetic field, we observe an unusually gradual increase of magnetization and a subsequent 1/2-plateau-like behavior. A numerical analysis using the tensor network method qualitatively demonstrates such behaviors and suggests a collinear ordered state and a field-enhanced quantum fluctuation. Furthermore, the local magnetization and T1^-1 probed by nuclear magnetic resonance measurements support these findings.

Ubiquitous ram pressure stripping in the Coma cluster of galaxies

We report the detection of H$α$ trails behind three new intermediate-mass irregular galaxies in the NW outskirts of the nearby cluster of galaxies Abell 1656 (Coma). Hints that these galaxies possess an extended component were found in earlier, deeper H$α$ observations carried out with the Subaru telescope. However the lack of a simultaneous $r$-band exposure, together with the presence of strong stellar ghosts in the Subaru images, prevented us from quantifying the detections. We therefore devoted one full night of H$α$ observation to each of the three galaxies using the San Pedro Martir 2.1m telescope. One-sided tails of H$α$ emission of 10-20 kpc projected size were detected, suggesting an ongoing ram pressure stripping event. We added these 3 new sources of extended ionized gas (EIG) added to the 12 found by Yagi et al. (2010), NGC 4848 (Fossati et al. 2012), and NGC 4921 whose ram pressure stripping is certified by HI asymmetry. This brings the number sources with H$α$ trails to 17 gaseous tails out of 27 (63 \%) late-type galaxies (LTG) galaxies members of the Coma cluster with direct evidence of ram pressure stripping. The 27 LTG galaxies, among these the 17 with extended H$α$ tails, have kinematic properties that are different from the rest of the early-type galaxy (ETG) population of the c ore of the Coma cluster, as they deviate in the phase-space diagram $Δ$V/$σ$ versus $r/R_{200}$.

Coexisting localized and itinerant gapless excitations in a quantum spin liquid candidate 1T-TaS$_2$

To reveal the nature of elementary excitations in a quantum spin liquid (QSL), we measured low temperature thermal conductivity and specific heat of 1T-TaS$_2$, a QSL candidate material with frustrated triangular lattice of spin-1/2. The nonzero temperature linear specific heat coefficient $γ$ and the finite residual linear term of the thermal conductivity in the zero temperature limit $κ_0/T=κ/T(T\rightarrow 0)$ are clearly resolved. This demonstrates the presence of highly mobile gapless excitations, which is consistent with fractionalized spinon excitations that form a Fermi surface. Remarkably, an external magnetic field strongly suppresses $γ$, whereas it enhances $κ_0/T$. This unusual contrasting behavior in the field dependence of specific heat and thermal conductivity can be accounted for by the presence of two types of gapless excitations with itinerant and localized characters, as recently predicted theoretically (I. Kimchi et al., arXiv:1803.00013 (2018)). This unique feature of 1T-TaS$_2$ provides new insights into the influence of quenched disorder on the QSL.

Spin dynamics in the high-field phases of volborthite

We report single-crystal 51V NMR studies on volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2 2H2O, which is regarded as a quasi-two-dimensional frustrated magnet with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. In the 1/3 magnetization plateau above 28 T, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 indicates an excitation gap with a large effective g factor in the range of 4.6-5.9, pointing to magnon bound states. Below 26 T where the gap has closed, the NMR spectra indicate small internal fields with a Gaussian-like distribution, whereas 1/T1 shows a power-law-like temperature dependence in the paramagnetic state, which resembles a slowing down of spin fluctuations associated with magnetic order. We discuss the possibility of an exotic spin state caused by the condensation of magnon bound states below the magnetization plateau.

A 85 kpc Halpha tail behind 2MASX J11443212+2006238 in A1367

We report the detection of an Halpha trail of 85 kpc projected length behind galaxy 2MASX J11443212+2006238 in the nearby cluster of galaxies Abell 1367. This galaxy was discovered to possess an extended component in earlier, deeper H$α$ observations carried out with the Subaru telescope. However, lying at the border of the Subaru field, the extended Halpha tail was cut out, preventing the determination of its full extent. We fully map this extent here, albeit the shallower exposure.

Optical and Near-Infrared Polarimetry of Non-Periodic Comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina)

We present an optical and near-infrared (hereafter NIR) polarimetric study of a comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) observed on UT 2015 December 17-18 at phase angles of $α$=52.1 deg - 53.1 deg. Additionally, we obtained an optical spectrum and multi-band images to examine the influence of gas emission. We find that the observed optical signals are significantly influenced by gas emission, that is, the gas-to-total intensity ratio varies from 5 to 30 % in the $R_{\rm C}$ and 3 to 18 % in the $I_{\rm C}$ bands, depending on the position in the coma. We derive the `gas-free dust polarization degrees' of 13.8$\pm$1.0 % in the $R_{\rm C}$ and 12.5$\pm$1.1 % in the $I_{\rm C}$ bands and a gray polarimetric color, i.e., -8.7$\pm$9.9 % $μ\mathrm{m}$$^{-1}$ in optical and 1.6$\pm$0.9 % $μ\mathrm{m}$$^{-1}$ in NIR. The increments of polarization obtained from the gas correction show that the polarimetric properties of the dust in this low-polarization comet are not different from those in high-polarization comets. In this process, the cometocentric distance dependence of polarization has disappeared. We also find that the $R_{\rm C}$-band polarization degree of the southeast dust tail, which consists of large dust particles (100 $μ\mathrm{m}$ - 1 mm), is similar to that in the outer coma where small and large ones are mixed. Our study confirms that the dichotomy of cometary polarization does not result from the difference of dust properties, but from depolarizing gas contamination. This conclusion can provide a strong support for similarity in origin of comets.

Three-dimensional band structure of LaSb and CeSb:Absence of band inversion

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of LaSb and CeSb, a candidate of topological insulator. Using soft-x-ray photons, we have accurately determined the three-dimensional bulk band structure and revealed that the band inversion at the Brillouin-zone corner - a prerequisite for realizing topological-insulator phase - is absent in both LaSb and CeSb. Moreover, unlike the ARPES data obtained with soft-x-ray photons, those with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons were found to suffer significant $k_z$ broadening. These results suggest that LaSb and CeSb are topologically trivial semimetals, and unusual Dirac-cone-like states observed with VUV photons are not of the topological origin.

Classical Spin Nematic Transition in LiGa$_{0.95}$In$_{0.05}$Cr$_4$O$_8$

We present the results of a combined $^7$Li NMR and diffraction study on LiGa$_{0.95}$In$_{0.05}$Cr$_4$O$_8$, a member of LiGa$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Cr$_4$O$_8$ "breathing" pyrochlore family. Via specific heat and NMR measurements, we find that the complex sequence of first-order transitions observed for $x=0$ is replaced by a single, apparently second-order transition at $T_f=11$ K. Neutron and X-ray diffraction rule out both structural symmetry lowering and magnetic long-range order as the origin of this transition. Instead, reverse Monte Carlo fitting of the magnetic diffuse scattering indicates that the low temperature phase may be described as a collinear spin nematic state, characterized by a quadrupolar order parameter. This state also shows signs of short range order between collinear spin arrangements on tetrahedra, revealed by mapping the reverse Monte Carlo spin configurations onto a three-state color model describing the manifold of nematic states.

Cold exciton electroluminescence from air-suspended carbon nanotube split-gate devices

Electroluminescence from individual carbon nanotubes within split-gate devices is investigated. By characterizing the air-suspended nanotubes with photoluminescence spectroscopy, chirality is identified and electroluminescence peaks are assigned. We observe electroluminescence linewidth comparable to photoluminescence, indicating negligible heating and state-mixing effects. Split-gate and bias voltage dependences are consistent with emission from an electrostatically formed $pn$-junction.

Unveiling Majorana Quasiparticles by a Quantum Phase Transition: Proposal of a Current Switch

We propose a theoretical approach based on an interferometer composed by two quantum dots asymmetrically coupled to isolated Majorana quasiparticles (MQPs), lying on the edges of two topological Kitaev chains, respectively via couplings $(t+Δ)$ and $(Δ-t)$. This setup enables us to probe MQPs in a quite distinct way from the zero-bias peak feature. Most importantly, the system behaves as a current switch made by two distinct paths: (i) for the upper dot connected to both chains, the device perceives both MQPs as an ordinary fermion and the current crosses solely the lower dot, since current in the upper dot is prevented due to the presence of the superconducting gap; and (ii) by suppressing slightly the hybridization of the upper dot with one chain, the current is abruptly switched to flow through this dot, once a trapped electron as a bound state in the continuum (BIC) (Phys. Rev. B 93, 165116 (2016)) appears in the lower dot. Such a current switch between upper and lower dots characterizes the Quantum Phase Transition (QPT) proposed here, being the ratio $t/Δ$ the control parameter of the transition. This QPT is associated with a change from an ordinary fermionic excitation regime to a MQP in the interferometer, which enables not only the fundamental revealing of MQPs, but also yields a current switch assisted by them.

MuSIC: delivering the world's most intense muon beam

A new muon beamline, muon science innovative channel (MuSIC), was set up at the Research Centre for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka University, in Osaka, Japan, using the 392 MeV proton beam impinging on a target. The production of an intense muon beam relies on the efficient capture of pions, which subsequently decay to muons, using a novel superconducting solenoid magnet system. After the pion-capture solenoid the first $36^\circ$ of the curved muon transport line was commissioned and the muon flux was measured. In order to detect muons, a target of either copper or magnesium was placed to stop muons at the end of the muon beamline. Two stations of plastic scintillators located upstream and downstream from the muon target were used to reconstruct the decay spectrum of muons. In a complementary method to detect negatively-charged muons, the X-ray spectrum yielded by muonic atoms in the target were measured in a germanium detector. Measurements, at a proton beam current of 6 pA, yielded $(10.4 \pm 2.7) \times 10^5$ muons per Watt of proton beam power ($μ^+$ and $μ^-$), far in excess of other facilities. At full beam power (400 W), this implies a rate of muons of $(4.2 \pm 1.1) \times 10^8$ muons s$^{-1}$, amongst the highest in the world. The number of $μ^-$ measured was about a factor of 10 lower, again by far the most efficient muon beam produced. The set up is a prototype for future experiments requiring a high-intensity muon beam, such as a muon collider or neutrino factory, or the search for rare muon decays which would be a signature for phenomena beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Such a muon beam can also be used in other branches of physics, nuclear and condensed matter, as well as other areas of scientific research.

Multifrequency Photo-polarimetric WEBT Observation Campaign on the Blazar S5 0716+714: Source Microvariability and Search for Characteristic Timescales

Here we report on the results of the WEBT photo-polarimetric campaign targeting the blazar S5~0716+71, organized in March 2014 to monitor the source simultaneously in BVRI and near IR filters. The campaign resulted in an unprecedented dataset spanning $\sim 110$\,h of nearly continuous, multi-band observations, including two sets of densely sampled polarimetric data mainly in R filter. During the campaign, the source displayed pronounced variability with peak-to-peak variations of about $30\%$ and "bluer-when-brighter" spectral evolution, consisting of a day-timescale modulation with superimposed hourlong microflares characterized by $\sim 0.1$\,mag flux changes. We performed an in-depth search for quasi-periodicities in the source light curve; hints for the presence of oscillations on timescales of $\sim 3$\,h and $\sim 5$\,h do not represent highly significant departures from a pure red-noise power spectrum. We observed that, at a certain configuration of the optical polarization angle relative to the positional angle of the innermost radio jet in the source, changes in the polarization degree led the total flux variability by about 2\,h; meanwhile, when the relative configuration of the polarization and jet angles altered, no such lag could be noted. The microflaring events, when analyzed as separate pulse emission components, were found to be characterized by a very high polarization degree ($> 30\%$) and polarization angles which differed substantially from the polarization angle of the underlying background component, or from the radio jet positional angle. We discuss the results in the general context of blazar emission and energy dissipation models.

Polarization angle swings in blazars: The case of 3C 279

Over the past few years, several occasions of large, continuous rotations of the electric vector position angle (EVPA) of linearly polarized optical emission from blazars have been reported. These events are often coincident with high energy gamma-ray flares and they have attracted considerable attention, as they could allow one to probe the magnetic field structure in the gamma-ray emitting region of the jet. The flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C279 is one of the most prominent examples showing this behaviour. Our goal is to study the observed EVPA rotations and to distinguish between a stochastic and a deterministic origin of the polarization variability. We have combined multiple data sets of R-band photometry and optical polarimetry measurements of 3C279, yielding exceptionally well-sampled flux density and polarization curves that cover a period of 2008-2012. Several large EVPA rotations are identified in the data. We introduce a quantitative measure for the EVPA curve smoothness, which is then used to test a set of simple random walk polarization variability models against the data. 3C279 shows different polarization variation characteristics during an optical low-flux state and a flaring state. The polarization variation during the flaring state, especially the smooth approx. 360 degrees rotation of the EVPA in mid-2011, is not consistent with the tested stochastic processes. We conclude that during the two different optical flux states, two different processes govern the polarization variation, possibly a stochastic process during the low-brightness state and a deterministic process during the flaring activity.

No Evidence of Intrinsic Optical/Near-Infrared Linear Polarization for V404 Cygni During its Bright Outburst in 2015: Broadband Modeling and Constraint on Jet Parameters

We present simultaneous optical and near-infrared (NIR) polarimetric results for the black hole binary V404 Cygni spanning the duration of its 7-day long optically-brightest phase of its 2015 June outburst. The simultaneous R and Ks-band light curves showed almost the same temporal variation except for the isolated (~30 min duration) orphan Ks-band flare observed at MJD 57193.54. We did not find any significant temporal variation of polarization degree (PD) and position angle (PA) in both R and Ks bands throughout our observations, including the duration of the orphan NIR flare. We show that the observed PD and PA are predominantly interstellar in origin by comparing the V404 Cyg polarimetric results with those of the surrounding sources within the 7'x7' field-of-view. The low intrinsic PD (less than a few percent) implies that the optical and NIR emissions are dominated by either disk or optically-thick synchrotron emission, or both. We also present the broadband spectra of V404 Cyg during the orphan NIR flare and a relatively faint and steady state by including quasi-simultaneous Swift/XRT and INTEGRAL fluxes. By adopting a single-zone synchrotron plus inverse-Compton model as widely used in modeling of blazars, we constrained the parameters of a putative jet. Because the jet synchrotron component cannot exceed the Swift/XRT disk/corona flux, the cutoff Lorentz factor in the electron energy distribution is constrained to be <10^2, suggesting particle acceleration is less efficient in this microquasar jet outburst compared to AGN jets. We also suggest that the loading of the baryon component inside the jet is inevitable based on energetic arguments.

Gate-voltage induced trions in suspended carbon nanotubes

We observe trion emission from suspended carbon nanotubes where carriers are introduced electrostatically using field-effect transistor structures. The trion peak emerges below the $E_{11}$ emission energy at gate voltages that coincide with the onset of bright exciton quenching. By investigating nanotubes with various chiralities, we verify that the energy separation between the bright exciton peak and the trion peak becomes smaller for larger diameter tubes. Trion binding energies that are significantly larger compared to surfactant-wrapped carbon nanotubes are obtained, and the difference is attributed to the reduced dielectric screening in suspended tubes.

Catching the Bound States in the Continuum of a Phantom Atom in Graphene

We explore theoretically the formation of bound states in the continuum (BICs) in graphene hosting two collinear adatoms situated at different sides of the sheet and at the center of the hexagonal cell, where a phantom atom of a fictitious lattice emulates the six carbons of the cell. We verify that in this configuration the local density of states (LDOS) near the Dirac points exhibits two characteristic features: i) the cubic dependence on energy instead of the linear one for graphene as found in New J. Phys. 16, 013045 (2014) and ii) formation of BICs as aftermath of a Fano destructive interference assisted by the Coulomb correlations in the adatoms. For the geometry where adatoms are collinear to carbon atoms, we report absence of BICs.

One-Third Magnetization Plateau with a Preceding Novel Phase in Volborthite

We have synthesized high-quality single crystals of volborthite, a seemingly distorted kagome antiferromagnet, and carried out high-field magnetization measurements up to 74 T and 51V NMR measurements up to 30 T. An extremely wide 1/3 magnetization plateau appears above 28 T and continues over 74 T at 1.4 K, which has not been observed in previous study using polycrystalline samples. NMR spectra reveal an incommensurate order (most likely a spin-density wave order) below 22 T and a simple spin structure in the plateau phase. Moreover, a novel intermediate phase is found between 23 and 26 T, where the magnetization varies linearly with magnetic field and the NMR spectra indicate an inhomogeneous distribution of the internal magnetic field. This sequence of phases in volborthite bear a striking similarity to those of frustrated spin chains with a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling J1 competing with an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling J2.
