Forward coherent $ϕ$-meson photoproduction from deuterons near threshold

Differential cross sections and decay asymmetries for coherent $ϕ$-meson photoproduction from deuterons were measured for the first time at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at $E_γ$= 1.5-2.4 GeV. This reaction offers a unique way to directly access natural-parity Pomeron dynamics and gluon exchange at low energies. The cross sections at zero degrees increase with increasing photon energy. The decay asymmetries demonstrate a complete dominance of natural-parity exchange processes, showing that isovector unnatural-parity $π$-meson exchange is small. Nevertheless the deduced cross sections of $ϕ$-mesons from nucleons contributed by isoscalar t-channel exchange processes are not well described by the conventional Pomeron model.

Neutrino Pair Emission from Excited Atoms

We explore a possibility of measuring the magnitude and the Majorana nature of neutrino masses, by using a novel process of neutrino pair emission from excited atoms. Except lepton number non-conserving processes, the neutrino pair ($ν\barν$) emission is the unique process to distinguish the Majorana neutrino from the Dirac neutrino. The small energy difference between atomic levels makes it easier to measure small neutrino masses as indicated by neutrino oscillation experiments. The crucial point is how to enhance the rate of pair emission without enhancing the radiative decay. We have in mind two particular cases; (1) laser irradiated pair emission from metastable atoms, and (2) microwave irradiated emission from circular Rydberg states. A new mechanism of the parametric amplification to enhance the neutrino pair emission is pointed out when Rydberg atoms are irradiated by microwave, while the radiative process may be inhibited by the cavity QED effect. A great variety of measurable neutrino parameters and a variety of experimental methods are conceivable.

Effect of Relic Neutrino on Neutrino Pair Emission from Metastable Atoms

A possiblity of measuring the cosmic neutrino temperature $\sim 1.9 K$ and other important quantities such as the chemical potential $μ$ and the decoupling temperature $T_d$ is discussed, using the recently proposed process of photon irradiated neutrino pair emission from metastable atoms. The Pauli blocking effect of relic neutrinos reduces the rate by a large factor $\approx (1 + m_1/T_d)/4$ at the threshold of the lightest neutrino pair (of mass $2m_1$). Correction of linear order in $μ$ near the mass thresholds can be used to improve the constraint on the lepton asymmetry.

Differential cross section and photon beam asymmetry for the gamma n -> K+ Sigma- reaction at Egamma=1.5-2.4 GeV

Differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries have been measured for the gamma n -> K+ Sigma- and gamma p -> K+ Sigma0 reactions separately using liquid deuterium and hydrogen targets with incident linearly polarized photon beams of Egamma=1.5-2.4 GeV at 0.6<cosTheta<1. The cross section ratio of sigma(K+Sigma-)/sigma(K+Sigma0), expected to be 2 on the basis of the isospin 1/2 exchange, is found to be close to 1. For the K+Sigma- reaction, large positive asymmetries are observed indicating the dominance of the K*-exchange. A large difference between the asymmetries for the K+Sigma- and K+Sigma0 reactions can not be explained by simple theoretical considerations.

Diffractive $ϕ$-meson photoproduction on proton near threshold

Photoproduction of $ϕ$-meson on protons was studied by means of linearly polarized photons at forward angles in the low-energy region from threshold to $E_γ$= 2.37 GeV. The differential cross sections at $t = -|t|_{min}$ do not increase smoothly as $E_γ$ increases, but show a local maximum at around 2.0 GeV. The angular distributions demonstrate that $ϕ$-mesons are photo-produced predominantly by helicity-conserving processes, and the local maximum is not likely due to unnatural-parity processes.

Photon Irradiated Compression as a Tool of Investigating Fundamental Physics beyond Standard Model

We clarify how intense laser irradiation leads to an enhancement of rare processes that may occur within atoms. Non-perturbative calculation using a coherent laser beam gives an exact, time dependent formula of the enhancement factor in the large power limit. A high quality laser may provide a new tool of experimentally investigating physics far beyond the standard model of particle physics such as lepton and baryon nonconservation.

New Method of Enhancing Lepton Number Nonconservation

The lepton number nonconserving (LENNON) conversion of type $ e^- \to e^+$ in heavy atoms, when irradiated by intense laser beam, is considered to determine the Majorana nature and precise values of neutrino masses. When the photon energy is fine tuned, the LENNON process is greatly enhanced by both the resonance effect and a large occupancy of photons. The signal of this process would be a positron of definite energy, and a further nuclear $γ$-ray in a favorable case of transition to an excited nuclear level. By constructing a united target-detector system, it is possible to explore $O[1meV]$ range of the neutrino mass parameter with a good positron energy resolution.

ASCA and XMM-Newton Observations of A2029

The X-ray data of A2029 obtained with XMM-Newton show no evidence of an embedded AGN in the central region of this cluster, which was suggested from the analysis of restored ASCA image data, although some hot spots are seen within or around the central cD galaxy. The absence of AGN at the cluster center is consistentent with the result of Chandra observations. Radial profiles of the iron abundance and the 2D (surface) temperature obtained from the XMM-Newton data are in good agreement with the Chandra data as a whole.

A variety of lepton number violating processes related to Majorana neutrino masses

A Majorana type of the neutrino mass matrix induces a class of lepton number violating processes. Cross sections of these reactions are given in terms of the neutrino mass matrix element, and a semi-realistic event rate is estimated. These processes provide mass and mixing parameters not directly accessible by the neutrino oscillation experiments. If these processes are discovered with a larger rate than given here, it would imply a new physics of the lepton number violation not directly related to the Majorana neutrino mass, such as R-parity violating operators in SUSY models.

Towards Resolution of Hierarchy Problems in a Cosmological Context

A cosmological scenario is proposed, which simultaneously solves the mass hierarchy and the small dark energy problem. In the present scenario an effective gravity mass scale (inverse of the Newton's constant) increases during the inflationary period. The small cosmological constant or the dark energy density in the present universe is dynamically realized by introducing two, approximately O(2) symmetric dilatons, taking the fundamental mass scale at TeV.

Time Evolution of Tunneling in Thermal Medium -- Environment-driven Excited Tunneling --

Time evolution of tunneling phenomena proceeding in thermal medium is studied using a standard model of environment interaction. A semiclassical probability formula for the particle motion in a metastable state of one dimensional system put in thermal medium is combined with the formula of quantum penetration factor through a potential barrier, to derive the tunneling rate in medium. Effect of environment, its influence on time evolution in particular, is clarified in a real-time formalism. A nonlinear resonance effect is shown to enhance the tunneling rate at finite times of order $2/η$, with $η$ the friction coefficient. In the linear approximation this effect has relevance to the parametric resonance. This effect enhances the possibility of early termination of the cosmological phase transition much prior to the typical Hubble time.

Beam polarization asymmetries for the p(gamma,K+)Lambda and p(gamma,K+)Sigma0 reactions at Egamma=1.5-2.4 GeV

Beam polarization asymmetries for the p(gamma,K+)Lambda and p(gamma,K+)sigma0 reactions are measured for the first time for Egamma=1.5-2.4 GeV and 0.6<cos(theta_cm(K+))<1.0 by using linearly polarized photons at the Laser-Electron-Photon facility at SPring-8 (LEPS). The observed asymmetries are positive and gradually increase with rising photon energy. The data are not consistent with theoretical predictions based on tree-level effective Lagrangian approaches. Including the new results in the development of the models is, therefore, crucial for understanding the reaction mechanism and to test the presence of baryon resonances which are predicted in quark models but are sofar undiscovered.

Coherence-Incoherence and Dimensional Crossover in Layered Strongly Correlated Metals

Correlations between electrons and the effective dimensionality are crucial factors that shape the properties of an interacting electron system. For example, the onsite Coulomb repulsion, U, may inhibit, or completely block the intersite electron hopping, t, and depending on the ratio U/t, a material may be a metal or an insulator. The correlation effects increase as the number of allowed dimensions decreases. In 3D systems, the low energy electronic states behave as quasiparticles (QP), while in 1D systems, even weak interactions break the quasiparticles into collective excitations. Dimensionality is particularly important for a class of new exotic low-dimensional materials where 1D or 2D building blocks are loosely connected into a 3D whole. Small interactions between the blocks may induce a whole variety of unusual transitions. Here, we examine layered systems that in the direction perpendicular to the layers display a crossover from insulating-like, at high temperatures, to metallic-like character at low temperatures, while being metallic over the whole temperature range within the layers. We show that this change in effective dimensionality correlates with the existence or non-existence of coherent quasiparticles within the layers.

Tunneling Phenomena in Cosmology: Some Fundamental Problems

The fundamental problem of how tunneling in thermal medium is completed is addressed, and a new time scale of order 1/friction for its termination, which is usually much shorter than the Hubble time, is pointed out. Enhanced non-linear resonance is responsible for this short time scale. This phenomenon occurs when the semiclassical periodic motion in a metastable potential well resonates with one of the environment harmonic oscillators coupled to its motion.

Resonance Enhanced Tunneling

Time evolution of tunneling in thermal medium is examined using the real-time semiclassical formalism previously developed. Effect of anharmonic terms in the potential well is shown to give a new mechanism of resonance enhanced tunneling. If the friction from environment is small enough, this mechanism may give a very large enhancement for the tunneling rate. The case of the asymmetric wine bottle potential is worked out in detail.

Quantum tunneling in thermal medium

Time evolution of tunneling phenomena in medium is studied using a standard model of environment interaction. A semiclassical formula valid at low, but finite temperatures is derived in the form of integral transform for the reduced Wigner function, and the tunneling probability in thermal medium is calculated for a general tunneling potential of one dimensional system. Effect of dissipation, its time evolution in particular, depends on the behavior of the potential far beyond the barrier.

Dynamics of barrier penetration in thermal medium: exact result for inverted harmonic oscillator

Time evolution of quantum tunneling is studied when the tunneling system is immersed in thermal medium. We analyze in detail the behavior of the system after integrating out the environment. Exact result for the inverted harmonic oscillator of the tunneling potential is derived and the barrier penetration factor is explicitly worked out as a function of time. Quantum mechanical formula without environment is modifed both by the potential renormalization effect and by a dynamical factor which may appreciably differ from the previously obtained one in the time range of 1/(curvature at the top of potential barrier).

Relic abundance of dark matter particles: new formulation and new result of abundance calculation

A new theoretical framework for computation of the relic abundance of cold dark matter particles such as LSP is presented and some generic features of new results are discussed. The most important is a generalization of the Boltzmann equation to include off-shell effects and its thermal average over cosmic medium. It is shown that at very low temperatures, much below the mass of annihilating particles, equilibrium abundance is suppressed only by powers of temperature instead of the exponential Boltzmann factor. This change gives a larger relic abundance when heavy particles freeze out at these low temperatures.
